    Daily Sports Roundup: May 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers play host to the Athletics, the Rockies meet the Giants, and the Flyers and Hawks battle in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for the last day of May has Cleveland at the Yankees, the Angels at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at Toronto, Minnesota at Seattle, and Oakland at Detroit. Trevor Cahill (3-2, 3.31 ERA) is slated to take on Justin Verlander (5-3, 3.74 ERA) in that Athletics/Tigers matchup. Righthander Cahill beat the Orioles in his last trip to the mound, holding them to one earned run on just two hits over his six innings of work, and fanning three. Righthander Verlander was knocked around by the Mariners last time out, giving up five earned runs on seven hits over his 7 1-3 innings.

Around the National League on Monday it'll be Philadelphia at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Florida, the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Washington at Houston, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Arizona at the Dodgers, the Mets at San Diego, and Colorado at San Francisco. Ubaldo Jimenez (9-1, 0.88 ERA) is set to take on Tim Lincecum (5-1, 3.00 ERA) in a high-powered pitching matchup in that last contest. Righthander Jimenez kept the wins coming last time out, holding the Diamondbacks scoreless on six hits over eight innings of work. Righthander Lincecum fell to the Nationals in his last trip to the mound, surrendering six earned runs on six hits in 4 2-3 innings while taking the loss.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the Blackhawks will host the Flyers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final on Monday night, with Chicago looking to take a 2-0 series lead. The Blackhawks outlasted the Flyers in a 6-5 home victory as a -200 favorite in the opener on Saturday night, with Tomas Kopecky providing the game-winning goal. Troy Brouwer scored twice for the Hawks in that contest, while Dave Bolland, Patrick Sharp, and Kris Versteeg provided singles. Daniel Briere picked up a goal and three assists in the loss for Philly, with Michael Leighton getting replaced after allowing five goals on 20 shots.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Cubs-Pirates money line and total are off the board pending the announcement of Chicago's starting pitcher.

Lines to keep an eye on

Total for the Nationals-Astros has dropped from 8 to 7.5 at some books.

Total for Twins-Mariners has jumped from 6.5 to 7 at most books.

      Weather to watch

Reds-Cardinals: 50 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Athletics-Tigers: 80 percent chance of showers.

Phillies-Braves: 60 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Brewers-Marlins: 40 percent chance of showers.

Angels-Royals: 40 percent chance of rain.

Cubs-Pirates: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

      Who's hot

Blackhawks have won nine of their last 10.

Braves have won five straight and 10 of their last 12.

      Who's not

Flyers are 3-13 in last 16 vs. Blackhawks.

Orioles have lost five straight and eight of last 10.

      Key stat

110 - Number of at-bats it took Albert Pujols to hit his previous three home runs before crushing three balls out of Wrigley Field in three ABs on Sunday.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Dodgers centerfielder Andre Ethier returns to the lineup after a stint on the 15-day disabled list with a broken bone in his pinky finger. The injury doesn't appear to have slowed the hot-hitting Ethier, who went a combined 5-for-8 at the plate in his two minor-league rehab starts, but big-league pitching is another animal. He was batting .382 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs before his departure, but will he be able to pick up where he left off?

      Game of the day

      Flyers at Blackhawks (-192, 6)

      Notable quotable

"I said, 'Good defense,' to Grant (Hill and Kobe Bryant) said, 'Not quite good enough.' ... I thought Grant was going to block the shot. That was a fallaway 3-pointer with a hand in your face, off balance. You know, that's who he is. That really is who he is."

Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry recalled from Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant's series-clinching shot late in Saturday night's Game 6. Bryant drilled the 23-footer with Hill in his face, then stopped by the Suns' bench to have a word with Gentry.

      Tips and notes

The World Cup is still two weeks away but players are already belly-aching about the adidas balls that will be used in the games. The players are critical of how much the ball knuckles in the air and is difficult to control. Italian striker Giampaolo Pazzini said the ball is hard to track for headers as it will dart suddenly in an unpredictable direction. "It is especially bad for goalkeepers if it means they concede a goal because they can’t judge the trajectory," he said. Could be good news for soccer fans who like offense, and for over bettors who like money.

The Phillies may be getting healthy just in time to end their slump. Closer Brad Lidge could return to the bullpen today and infielder Placido Polanco may return to the lineup Tuesday. Lidge, who has been on the disabled list since May 10 with elbow inflammation, pitched an inning at Class A Clearwater and could catch up to the team in Atlanta today. Polanco, who aggravated a left elbow injury diving for a ball Thursday and has been out since, will return to Philadelphia for a cortisone shot Monday and rejoin the team Tuesday in Atlanta.

Padres catcher Yorvit Torrealba has left the team for three days due to personal reasons, leaving Monday's starter Kevin Correia and the next two in the rotation little time to get used to his replacement behind the plate. The Padres have called up catcher Dusty Ryan, who has just 27 big-league starts under his belt, from Triple-A Portland. Fellow catcher Nick Hundley was splitting time with Torrealba, who is batting .287, and is due for a break.

Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks (-192, 6)

Maybe hockey fans were wrong when they said the Habs and Flyers were fighting for the right to get swept but whatever team came out of the Western Conference.

The Flyers, who’ve overcome a coaching change, some friction in the locker room and a No. 7 seeding in the playoffs, showed they could go blow for blow with the fast-striking Blackhawks.

Inconsistent goaltending is the latest hurtle Philly needs to overcome. The East champs didn’t skip a beat when they made the change between the pipes against Bruins in the second round. Michael Leighton was doing a remarkable job for the Flyers but he didn’t come up with his best performance in Game 1 of the Cup final.

“We know all around defensively we didn’t have a good game,” Leighton told the Chicago Sun-Times after giving up five goals on 20 shots before getting yanked in the second frame. “We know to beat this team we have to play better defensively.

“I have to be better. I have to make saves at key times. Tonight didn’t go our way.”

Expect the Flyers to stick to their game plan on Monday and come away from Chicago with a 1-1 series split.

          Pick: Flyers

Game of the day: Flyers at Blackhawks
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks (-192, 6)

Old-time hockey turned into wide-open ice in the first game of the Stanley Cup finals when the Blackhawks edged Philadelphia 6-5. The Blackhawks try to make it 2-0 in the series tonight.

            Game 1 recap

Overall there were five lead changes and either out of character or a sign of the respect to Chicago's power play, the Flyers did not have a penalty in Game 1.

At times Saturday's opener looked like an All-Star game with plenty of goals, no fights and few penalties.

Both teams expect things to get a little tighter Monday night. The 11 goals was the most in a finals game since 1992 and Chicago got the winner from Thomas Kopecky eight minutes into the final period.

            Leighton's issues

Flyers goalie Michael Leighton was pulled in second period after allowing five goals on just 20 shots. Is he wearing down?

Leighton was one of the biggest reasons the Flyers were able to pull the remarkable comeback against the Bruins when they were down 3-0 in games and 3-0 on the scoreboard in Game 7.

Leighton was 6-1 in the playoffs entering Saturday's game. He took over for Brian Boucher to change the momentum in the second round and entered Game 1 with a 1.45 goals against average in the playoffs.

He is streaky winning at least four starts in a row three times during the regular season when he went 17-9-2 and he wants to start Game 2.

Chicago's Antii Niemi made 27 saves on 32 shots to get the win, nothing to write home about. He allowed late goals in both the first and second periods.

            History in the making

Chicago hasn't won the Cup since 1961 (49 years) when Stan Mikita was carrying the way. The Flyers last won in 1975 when Dave Schultz and the Broad Street Bullies policed the ice. They last made the finals in 1997.

            No chants of defense

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette blamed the defense for the Game 1 loss. Chicago scored three goals on five shots in one span. And, on Kris Versteeg's goal that tied the game at 4-4, there were four Flyers in front of Leighton but no one bothered to lay a finger on him as he gathered up a rebound and flipped in the net. That was woeful.

            X-factor

There is a reason Marian Hossa has reached the Cup finals the past two seasons. He can do it all. While Hossa hasn't scored much lately he has been superb defensively and lends a veteran presence on the ice.

And don't forget that Hossa plays alongside Troy Brouwer who was named the No. 1 star in Saturday's game. Hossa had two assists and finished +2 for the night.

            Injury report

Andrew Ladd, the Chicago winger missed Game 1 with a shoulder injury and remains questionable. He had 17 goals during the regular season.

            Trends

The numbers are good for both these teams. That's why they're in the finals.

The Blackhawks are 42-16 as home favorites and 14-3 in their last 17 games with one day's rest.

Philadelphia has won eight of its last 10 games and they are 7-1 with one day's rest.

The Flyers are 23-52 as a road underdog against a team with over .600 winning percentage.

The home team has won the last four in this meeting.

The Flyers have gone under the number 5-0-2 in their last seven games after giving up at least five goals in their previous game.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers (-170, 8.5)

The Diamondbacks have served up more home runs than any team in baseball this season, and they're well on their way to allowing more than anyone in baseball history.

Entering Sunday's game against the Giants, the D-backs had given up 85 round-trippers through their first 50 games - well ahead of the pace to break the Detroit Tigers' dubious distinction of 241 in 1996.

"We're on a horrible pace, and we're blowing the rest of the league out of the water," Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch told the Arizona Republic.

"This isn't a staff that I would have expected to give up as many home runs as we have (but) it's a reality. The numbers don't lie. It's definitely something we're concerned about and have been talking about quite a bit."

Fortunately for them the Dodgers haven't exactly been rattling the bats lately, but that could change tonight with the expected return of outfielder Andre Ethier, who was leading the NL in batting (.382), HRs (11) and RBIs (38) before breakining a bone in his pinky finger on May 14.

Ethier went 5-for-8 at the plate in his two rehab appearances so it's not like he will be coming in cold. The Dodgers have sorely missed him in the lineup and should respond against Arizona pitcher Rodrigo Lopez, whom they touched up for seven runs in both meetings this season.

              Pick: Dodgers

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves (-150, 8.5)

The Braves have the chance to go from worst to first in the NL East during the month of May with a win over the Phillies today.

Hard to believe they were dead last in the division and in NL hitting on May 1. They're 19-8 for the month and now a half-game back thanks to a recent Phillies' slide.

Ray Halladay's perfect game on Saturday night against the Marlins is about the only way he could ensure himself a win with the way the Phillies have been hitting lately. They scored a grand total of four runs on their current six-game road trip after a shutout sweep by the Mets.

Atlanta's Tommy Hanson could be just what the Phillies need to snap out of their slump. Hanson hasn't lasted more than five innings in his last three starts against Philly and carries a quadruple-digit ERA against them.

Phillies starter Joe Blanton has had better success against the Braves, allowing just eight earned runs in his last 25 innings vs. Atlanta, but that was back before the Braves found their swing. They've averaged more than six runs per game over the last 20 games, going 16-4 during that span.

"We're playing well (and the Phillies are) struggling a little bit," said Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who had the game-winning RBI on Sunday. "Let's just go out and play them. Have fun. Do the same things we've been doing for the last month. It's not do or die."

With the pressure suddenly on the Phillies instead of the Braves, look for both offenses to rise to the occasion.

              Pick: Over

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Ervin Santana (4-3, 3.65) L.A. Angels

Ervin Santana was cranking out more hits than rock legend Carlos Santana until his last three starts, going 3-0 and allowing only five earned runs during that span.

Santana has a 2.05 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in his last three starts, striking out 22 in those 22 innings of work, including a 10-K, complete-game performance in his four-hitter against the Blue Jays in his last outing.

"I'm not going to throw a complete game all the time," Santana said after the 8-3 win, "but I just try to go as far as I can for as long as I can."

It's a stark contrast to his 1-3 start to the season, when he gave up 23 earned runs over his first seven starts. Like the more musically inclined Santana, Ervin also has found his groove.

Ubaldo Jimenez (9-1, 0.88) Colorado Rockies

After Jimenez's hot start to the season, it's hard to imagine him getting any hotter. Yet that's exactly what he'd done over his last three outings.

After starting the season 6-1 with an 0.99 ERA, including his first career no-hitter, Jimenez has actually lowered his ERA and WHIP over his past three starts with identical 0.78 marks during that span.

"It's not easy to have an ERA like that young man has this late into the season," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of Jimienez. "I've heard the term 'microscopic' used and I think it applies."

Jimenez carries a 16 1/3-inning scoreless streak into Monday's highly anticipated matchup with San Francisco's Tim Lincecum, but it's tough for anyone to beat a guy giving up less than one run per game.

                Slumping

Matt Garza (5-3, 2.97) Tampa Bay Rays

After getting off to 5-1 start in his first six outings, Garza hasn't won since May 5, going 0-2 over his last four starts and allowing 13 earned runs during that stretch.

Garza's last start was his shortest and worst of the season, allowing six earned runs (all on home runs) and walking five batters in an 11-3 loss to the Red Sox.

While it's possible Garza was protected behind the Rays' strong hitting earlier in the season, he's been exposed a bit now that the offense has come down to earth.

"It's such a cyclical thing, I think," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "You're either hot in those moments or (you're not), and we had been hot and now we're not."

Garza may need all the support he can get today against the power-hitting Jays.

Francisco Liriano (4-3, 3.17) Minnesota Twins

It's only May and it's already been a tale of two seasons for Liriano. After going 4-0 through his first five starts, Liriano is 0-3 in his last four outings.

Maybe he should blame it on the rain. After sailing through his first five trips to the mound, Liriano's sixth start was pushed back one day against the Baltimore Orioles and he hasn't been the same ever since.

Liriano has allowed 15 earned runs over that stretch after giving up just six in his first five outings. His ERA has almost tripled since the weather threw off his rhythm. But the veteran still has it in him to bounce back.

"With Frankie on the mound you know you're going to get a chance to win," said Twins manager Rod Gardenhire.

True, just not as true as it was one month ago.

                  This Day in Baseball
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 31 in Baseball History...

1937 - A Memorial Day crowd of 61,756, the second-largest crowd in Polo Grounds history, sees the Dodgers end Carl Hubbell's consecutive-game winning streak at 24 over two seasons. Brooklyn routs King Carl in the fourth inning and wins 10-3.

1942 - Before 22,000 at Griffith Stadium, Satchel Paige pitches five innings to defeat the Dizzy Dean All-Stars 8-1. Dean pitches just the first inning. The game a week earlier, in which Paige won 3-1 at Wrigley Field, drew 29,000. Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis will prohibit a scheduled July 4 matchup because the first two games outdrew major-league games.

1948 - A lefthander for Schenectady (Canadian-American League) named Tom Lasorda strikes out 25 in a 15-inning game against Amsterdam.

1964 - After Juan Marichal's 5-3, first-game win, San Francisco holds a 6-1 lead in the nightcap until New York rallies for five runs to tie it in the seventh. Eventually, with two down in the 23rd inning, pinch-hitter Del Crandall delivers a run-scoring double off Galen Cisco, and the Giants prevail 8-6 after a record seven hours and 22 minutes. Gaylord Perry pitches ten scoreless innings to get credit for the win. Thirty-two innings and an elapsed time of nine hours and 50 minutes are doubleheader records, as are 47 strikeouts.

1975 - The Royals beat the Brewers 7-5 in a game bridging the generation gap. Hank Aaron and Harmon Killebrew are in their 22nd major-league seasons and winning pitcher Lindy McDaniel is in his 21st. All three were playing in the majors before Brewers shortstop Robin Yount was born.

1979 - Pat Underwood makes his major league debut for Detroit, pitching 8 1/3 innings in shutting out Toronto 1-0. The losing pitcher is Pat's brother, Tom.

1980 - Ken Landreaux goes 0-for-4 in Minnesota's 11-1 loss to the Orioles to end his hitting streak at 31 consecutive games. Baltimore southpaw Scott McGregor does the honors. It is the longest streak in the A.L. since Dom DiMaggio's 34-game stretch in 1949.

1981 - Playing before their tenth consecutive home sellout, the Dodgers pound the Reds 16-4 and raise their season attendance to 1,026,725 in 22 dates. It is the earliest any team has cracked the one million attendance barrier.

1983 - A.L. President Lee MacPhail suspends Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for one week, citing "repeated problems" with the outspoken owner's public criticism of umpires. Steinbrenner, who had been fined $50,000 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn during spring training for berating some N.L. umpires, cannot attend games or be in his Yankee Stadium office during the suspension.

1984 - Mario Soto is suspended for five days by N.L. president Chub Feeney for his role in a 32-minute melee that marred the Reds-Cubs game on May 27. After shoving third base umpire Steve Rippley, who had signaled that Ron Cey's long fly ball was a three-run home run (it was later ruled foul), a bat-wielding Soto then tried to attack a park vendor who had thrown a bag of ice at him. Soto will be suspended again for five more days later in the season for his June 16 fight with Claudell Washington.

1996 - Albert Belle uses a forearm to break up a double play and nearly breaks Milwaukee second baseman Fernando Vina's nose in the process. The Cleveland slugger is suspended for two games.

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Rockies: Colorado is making their patented move up the National League standings right now. The Rockies have won 7 of their past 10 games, and are 26-23 on the year. Colorado is 11-15 away from home this year, as they look to get a step closer to .500. The Rockies are 2-7 in their past 9 meetings overall with the Giants. Colorado is averaging nearly 7 runs per game over their past 6 contests. The Rockies will send arguably the best pitcher in baseball to the mound today in Ubaldo Jimenez. Jimenez is 9-1 this year, with an ERA of 0.88 and a WHIP of 0.93. The Rockies are 5-1 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Colorado is 2-12 in their last 14 during game 1 of a series. The Rockies are 4-0 in Jimenez's last 4 starts against a team with a winning record. Colorado is 6-1 in Jimenez's last 7 starts against the National League West.

Giants (-110, O/U 6): San Francisco is playing well, as they've won 3 straight games to stand at 26-22 on the year. The Giants are right in the middle of the hotly contested National League West standings. San Francisco has scored 22 runs in their past 3 games, so their offense is starting to play to the level of their brilliant pitching staff. Speaking of brilliant, P Tim Lincecum is again pitching like a Cy Young candidate. Lincecum is 5-1 this year, with an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.12. Surprisingly, 7 of the 9 games started by Lincecum this year have gone over the posted total. The Giants are 25-9 in their last 34 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Giants are 21-10 in their last 31 during game 1 of a series. San Francisco is 6-1 in Lincecums' last 7 starts following a team loss in their previous game. New York Mets at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Mets: New York has climbed the mountain, as they are back over .500 after a dismal start to their season. The Mets have won 7 of their past 10 games, and are now 26-25 on the year. New York is in 3rd place in the National League East, 3 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. New York has been dominant at home and dismal on the road. The Mets are a paltry 7-16 on the road this season. In one of the most drastic unit differentials in the majors this year, New York is up 1 unit overall but up over 11 units on the run line. The Mets will have P Hisanori Takahashi on the mound today, as he makes his 3rd start of the season. Takahashi has been valuable for the Mets, as he can be both a spot starter and a relief option. Takahasi is 4-1 this year, with an ERA of 2.13 and a WHIP of 1.24. The Mets are 1-8 in the last 9 meetings in San Diego. New York is 17-36 in their last 53 road games against a right-handed starter. PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Padres (-110, O/U 6.5): San Diego continues to be the surprise team in baseball this season. With a small payroll and a relatively unknown team, expectations were low. The Padres have proven that good pitching and good team chemistry can be a successful combination for a small market team. The Padres have the best record in the entire National League at 30-20. San Diego is up over 12 units this season, including 11 units on the run line. P Kevin Correia will take the mound today, as he is 4-4 on the season with an ERA of 4.03 and a WHIP of 1.32. San Diego is 5 games over .500 at home and on the road this year. The Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. San Diego is 5-0 in Correia's last 5 starts against the National League East. The Padres are 8-3 in Correia's last 11 starts with 4 days of rest.
