    Daily Sports Roundup: May 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Drivers take to the track at Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Istanbul, while the White Sox take on the Rays, and the Phillies battle the Marlins.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Sunday has Oakland at Detroit, Cleveland at the Yankees, Baltimore at Toronto, Kansas City at Boston, Seattle at the Angels, Texas at Minnesota, and the White Sox at Tampa Bay. Chicago has Jake Peavy (3-4, 6.05 ERA) as their probable pitcher for Sunday, with the Rays sending James Shields (5-2, 2.99 ERA) to the mound. Righthander Peavy faced the Rays back on April 22, getting knocked around for seven earned runs on seven hits over just 4 1-3 innings in a loss. Righthander Shields also took to the hill on April 22, securing the victory over the White Sox after giving up just two earned runs on six hits in his seven innings pitched.

Over in the National League on Sunday it'll be Houston at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, the Mets at Milwaukee, St. Louis at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Colorado, Washington at San Diego, Arizona at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Florida. Jamie Moyer (5-4, 4.55 ERA) is scheduled to take on Anibal Sanchez (4-2, 3.23 ERA) in that Phillies/Marlins matchup. Lefthander Moyer lost to the Marlins back on April 17, surrendering five earned runs on six hits over six innings of work (and striking out seven batters). Righthander Sanchez faced the Phillies in his April 16 outing, giving up five earned runs on eight hits over his six innings of work in a defeat, and fanning one.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series takes the track at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday for the Coca-Cola 600. Jimmie Johnson, who has struggled lately but won the NASCAR Banking 500 at Charlotte last October, is sitting as the +300 sportsbook favorite for Sunday's race, with Kyle Busch (+500), Kurt Busch (+700), Jeff Gordon (+800), and Denny Hamlin (+800) behind him. Defending champ David Reutimann is set at +3000.

Formula 1 has the Turkish Grand Prix on tap for Sunday, with Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel (7/5) and Mark Webber (9/4) sitting as the oddsmakers' top choices. Fernando Alonso, who sits in third place in the drivers championship behind Vettel and Webber, is tied with Lewis Hamilton at 11/2 odds to take the checkered flag in Turkey. Jenson Button, who won in Turkey last year, is at 12/1 odds to repeat that win.

As well, the Indianapolis 500 is set for Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, with Helio Castroneves sitting atop the sportsbooks' list as the +250 favorite. Scott Dixon (+350), Ryan Briscoe (+400), and Dario Franchitti (+400) round out the top tier of contenders for IndyCar's marquee event, with Will Power just behind that group at +600 odds. Danica Patrick sits as a +3000 underdog to claim the Indy 500 on Sunday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are three games on the WNBA's schedule for Sunday, with Connecticut at Washington, Atlanta at Los Angeles, and Seattle at San Antonio. The Storm have started the season at 4-1 straight-up but just 2-3 against-the-spread; Seattle was defeated 84-75 by Chicago in their last game, with Lauren Jackson scoring 15 points.

Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Athletics at Tigers – This game is off the board because Detroit starting pitcher Armando Galarraga has been scratched and the team’s replacement hasn’t officially been announced. Reports have come out that say Max Scherzer will make the start (see note below).

White Sox at Rays – There is a possibility Jake Peavy’s start could be pushed back to Monday (see note below) but the righty has been adamant saying that he will take the hill against Tampa Bay. If Peavy doesn’t get the nod Sunday then Mark Buehrle will take his place.

Cardinals at Cubs – The uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley has kept this game’s total from being posted. The first game in this series went OVER while Game 2 went UNDER.

Lines to keep an eye on

Seattle Storm at San Antonio Silver Stars – The total in this game has plummeted from an opener of 150.5 to 147 on a few betting boards. Every Seattle game this season has gone OVER.

Connecticut Suns at Washington Mystics – An opening total of 151 has been hammered upward with sharp money moving the number to as high as 155.5.

Atlanta Dream at L.A. Sparks – This total has moved from an opener of 152 to 155.5 in some markets.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Sunday’s forecast for the Indianapolis 500 calls for a 30 percent chance of rain. The National Weather Service reports there is a possibility of scattered thunderstorms after 2 p.m. local time. The high for the day is expected to be 88 degrees.

There is a 50-60 percent chance of rain throughout Saturday night and until about 6 p.m. Sunday at the French Open in Paris. Wet conditions could delay matches and prolong the tournament.

Phillies at Marlins – The forecast calls for wind to blow in from right field at 11 mph. A 30-60 percent chance of precipitation is also expected.

Red Sox at Royals – An 12 mph wind is projected to blow straight out to center field. There is also a 10 percent chance of rain in the forecast.

Pirates at Braves – A 40-50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms could bring rain.

      Who’s hot

The home team has won six out of the last seven matchups in the Storm-Silver Stars (WNBA) series.

Kansas City had won three consecutive games as underdogs (+4.70 units) going into Saturday.

As of Saturday, AL West members Oakland and Seattle had both won three in a row.

      Who’s not

Baltimore has lost four in a row and is 2-8 over a 10-game stretch.

Washington (WNBA) has lost three straight outings while its opponent (Minnesota) has won two straight.

The Diamondbacks were on a five-game losing streak going into Saturday.

      Key Stat

68 – Percentage of home MLB teams that have won Game 4 of a series this season. A few Sunday games set up for this situation.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cubs catcher Geovany Soto was a late scratch from Saturday's game with St. Louis because he was ill. Soto is batting .256 with four home runs and 10 RBIs this season and was replaced in the lineup by Koyie Hill. The concern here is that if Soto is contagious teammates could be affected for Sunday’s game.

      Notable quotable

"We were all excited. We forgot what it was like. We were shaking hands and I forgot what it was like to high-five guys after a game. My hands were fossilled."

-- Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino said after his team broke a 30-inning scoreless drought.

      Tips and notes

      - The Royals look like a resurrected, and profitable, club since Ned Yost took over for Trey Hillman on May 15. The team has gone 9-5 under new management with every win but one coming as an underdog (+5.94 units). Last week, outfielder Jose Guillen said there is “a different kind of motivation in this clubhouse” under Yost and there is “a lot of energy.” Kansas City will aim to win a four-game series in Boston Sunday after taking the first two.

      - Jake Peavy and pitching coach Don Cooper are in an “adjustment period” as the White Sox starting pitcher put it. Cooper said on Thursday that Peavy had a “tired arm” after getting rocked by the Indians for six earned in 6.0 innings. But Peavy insists that his arm is in good shape and that he just “didn't have good stuff” that night. The coaching staff approached Peavy about resting one more day and pushing back Sunday’s start to Monday but the right-hander vehemently stated that he was “going to start Sunday.” This game is still not on the betting board because of that situation and if Peavy starts bettors probably should not expect a quality outing. He admitted two weeks ago his mechanics were out of whack and could be in denial.

      - Max Scherzer will return to the Tigers’ rotation Sunday after being recalled from Triple-A. The hard-throwing righty was sent down on May 15 after giving up 27 runs in 18 innings during his last four starts in the bigs. But after two stellar sessions in the minors, 2-0 with 0.60 ERA and 17 strikeouts (15.0 innings), Detroit has faith once again. The question is; do you have faith that Scherzer’s returned to form? Was he just capitalizing off less formidable lineups or did he figure something out in the minors? It was much easier pitching in the NL for Scherzer (just like Peavy) and he is a -130 favorite to win Sunday.

          Sunday, May 30

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays (-200, 8)

The Jays’ lineup may not hit for the best average, but it’s going to take some hacks at the plate and mash a few long balls while doing it.

Toronto has already set a team record with 50 home runs in the month of May and will look to continue its onslaught versus the hapless Orioles Sunday. The Jays have already knocked six balls out of the park in the first two games of the three-game set.

"They are an ambush-type team," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said. "They don't take a whole lot, they don't walk a whole lot. They go up there looking to swing. If you make mistakes, they don't foul them straight back, they hit them."

Baltimore will aim to counter the Canadians’ offensive attack with Jeremy Guthrie. Problem is; the Jays hit righties better than any other team in the majors with 225 runs and 74 homers – almost 30 more HRs than the next team.

The Jays have won five straight against the O’s and seven in a row in Toronto.

The runline (+110) should be a safe bet in this game as it has cashed in the first two of this series, but closer Kevin Gregg always provides the possibility of giving up a run or two in the ninth inning of a close game.

          Pick: Blue Jays

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (-105, OTB)

Total bettors should have Wrigley Field figured out by now because the oddsmakers are doing all the work for them.

When the total at Chicago’s iconic ballpark has been posted at 8.5 or less this season, the over/under record is 3-12. And if the wind is blowing directly in from center field the UNDER is 6-1.

On the other side of the spectrum, when the total at Wrigley is listed at 9.5 or higher (and there’s already been a 13 and 14.5) the over/under record is a perfect 6-0.

With two pitching studs like Adam Wainwright and Ryan Dempster facing each other Sunday, you can be assured this total won’t be more than 8.5 runs so that should lead bettors to the promised land.

          Pick: Under

            Sunday, May 30

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We might come off as a cynical bunch here in the newsroom (bad beats on a nightly basis will have that affect on people), but we like to give props when the situation calls for it. Sunday showcases a number of pitchers taking the mound who’ve been dealing aces lately.

That’s why we’re rolling with three streaking hurlers and just one slumping.

            Streaking

            Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox rotation is in shambles but Boston backers can feel at ease whenever this lefty takes the bump. Lester is 5-0 in his last five decisions and the Sox are 6-1 in his last seven outings.

The Washington state native has struck out 28 batters compared to only nine walks. And Lester is working deep into games (he’s pitched seven or more innings in five of his last six appearances), so you don’t have to worry about the bullpen screwing things up.

Total bettors take notice: the under is 6-2-1 in his last nine starts.

            Jon Garland, San Diego Padres

Baseball bettors are all wondering whether Garland has rediscovered his 2005 form or whether he’s just benefiting from calling pitcher-friendly PETCO Field his new home ballpark.

His home ERA (0.84) is almost a full three runs lower than his number on the road. The righty looked great in his last start, pitching seven scoreless innings against a good-hitting Cardinals club.

            Jeremy Guthrie, Baltimore Orioles

There was a time last season when oddsmakers couldn’t pay bettors to back this guy. But Guthrie is doing a great job of making Baltimore backers forget about 2009.

Guthrie has pitched 20 innings, allowing three earned runs and just four walks, over his last turns in the rotation. Right-handed batters are hitting just .175 with a .207 on-base percentage.

            Slumping

            Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians

There were whispers in spring that Masterson could emerge as Cleveland’s staff ace but things haven’t gone that way for the former Red Sox reliever. Opposing hitters are batting .321 while getting on base at a .406 clip against the Jamaican native.

It’s gotten so bad that the last-place Indians are even considering dropping Masterson from the rotation.

"We'll see," Manny Acta told the Associated Press following a four-inning, five-run outing last week. "It's not just going to be a knee-jerk reaction after a game before we talk it over and talk to the player. Up to now, he's still starting for us."

              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 30 in Baseball History...

1913 - John McGraw joins Fred Clarke, Cap Anson, Frank Selee, and Connie Mack as managers who have won 1,000 games.

1921 - A memorial to Captain Eddie Grant, killed in action in the Argonne Forest October 20, 1918, is unveiled at the Polo Grounds.

1925 - Rogers Hornsby is named manager of the Cardinals, replacing Branch Rickey, who remains as general manager. Hornsby will be the only player-manager to win the Triple Crown, which he does by topping .400 for the third time in four years, hitting .403 with 39 home runs and 143 RBI.

1927 - Walter Johnson's first appearance of the season is the occasion of the last shutout of his career, number 113, in a 3-0 win over Boston.

1932 - A plaque in memory of Miller Huggins, former Yankee manager, is dedicated at Yankee Stadium. It is the first of an array of monuments erected in the ballpark.

1935 - Babe Ruth plays only the first inning of the opener of a doubleheader between the Boston Braves and Philadelphia Phillies at Baker Bowl. It is his final major league appearance.

1938 - The largest crowd in Yankee Stadium history, 83,533, sees Red Ruffing end Lefty Grove's eight-game winning streak in a 10-0 victory over the Red Sox. Approximately 6,000 fans are turned away, and 511 are given refunds because there is no place to sit. The Yankees also take the nightcap, 5-4, in a game made famous for a fight between Yankees outfielder Jake Powell and Boston player-manager Joe Cronin. Both players are fined and suspended for ten days.

1946 - In a play that anticipates a scene in The Natural by Brooklyn-native Bernard Malamud, the Braves' Bama Rowell smashes a home run in the second inning of the second game of a doubleheader at Ebbets Field. The ball shatters the Bulova clock high atop the right-field scoreboard at 4:25 P.M., showering glass down on the Dodgers right fielder Dixie Walker. An hour later the clock stops.

1956 - Mickey Mantle hits one of the most memorable home runs in his career, in the second game of a doubleheader with the Washington Senators. He tags a pitch from Pedro Ramos that comes within 18 inches of leaving Yankee Stadium, something never accomplished by any major leaguer. The ball was still climbing when it caromed off the upper-stand facade, about 396 feet from home plate. Estimates are that the ball could have traveled more than 600 feet. It is Mantle's 20th home run of the season — no one else has ever hit 20 home runs before June.

1967 - Whitey Ford, nearing 41, announces his retirement from baseball because of an elbow injury. His final appearance was a start in Detroit on May 21, but he lasted just one inning for the Yankees. The stylish lefthander closes out with 236 career wins and only 106 losses for a .690 percentage.

1970 - All-Star voting is returned to the fans, as computerized punch-card ballots appear in stores and ballparks coast to coast. Since 1958 the All-Star squads had been selected by managers, coaches, and players.

1971 - Willie Mays hits his 638th career home run for the Giants, adding in the process his N.L. record 1,950th run scored. Stan Musial had been the record holder with 1,949 runs.

1977 - Twenty-two-year-old Dennis Eckersley fires a no-hitter as the Indians top the Angels 1-0. Frank Tanana, with three shutouts in his last four games, takes the loss.

1992 - The Yankees Scott Sanderson becomes the ninth pitcher to defeat all 26 major league teams. Also on the list: Nolan Ryan, Tommy John, Don Sutton, Gaylord Perry, Rick Wise, Doyle Alexander, and Rich "Goose" Gossage.
