    Daily Sports Roundup: May 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Suns and Lakers do battle in Game 4 in Phoenix, while the Tigers look for a victory in Seattle, and the Dodgers meet the Cubs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Lakers and Suns will meet in Phoenix for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday night, with Los Angeles up 2-1 in the series after losing 118-109 on the road in Game 3 on Sunday. Amare Stoudemire led the way for the Suns in that Game 3 win, scoring 42 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Robin Lopez added 20 points for Phoenix in that contest, while Steve Nash contributed 17 points and 15 assists. Kobe Bryant scored a team-high 36 points in the losing cause for the Lakers, and Pau Gasol had 23 points. The Suns had been favored by 1 point on Sunday night.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Oakland at Baltimore, the White Sox at Cleveland, Boston at Tampa Bay, the Yankees at Minnesota, Texas at Kansas City, Toronto at the Angels, and Detroit at Seattle. The Tigers' Justin Verlander (5-2, 3.43 ERA) will take on the Mariners' Doug Fister (3-2, 1.96 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Verlander was beaten by the Mariners back on April 17 despite giving up just three earned runs on seven hits over his seven innings of work (and fanning six). Righthander Fister is coming off a hard-luck loss to the Blue Jays in which he surrendered three earned runs on five hits over eight innings and struck out five hitters.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be Atlanta at Florida, Philadelphia at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Houston at Milwaukee, Arizona at Colorado, St. Louis at San Diego, Washington at San Francisco, and the Dodgers at the Cubs. Clayton Kershaw (4-2, 3.23 ERA) is slated to get the ball for Los Angeles in that contest, and he'll take on Chicago's Ryan Dempster (2-4, 3.73 ERA). Lefthander Kershaw has won three straight starts, allowing just two earned runs over 22 1-3 innings against the Padres (twice) and Rockies. Righthander Dempster took a no-decision against the Phillies in his last trip to the mound, surrendering four earned runs over his six innings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Phoenix at Tulsa and Washington at Seattle. Washington (3-1 straight-up, 3-1 against-the-spread) and Seattle (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) have combined to win six of their first seven games this season. The Mystics, though, are coming off their first loss of the year, falling 80-65 to Connecticut on Sunday; Crystal Langhorne was good for 16 points for Washington in that contest. The Storm outgunned Phoenix 95-89 in overtime in their last game on Saturday, with Lauren Jackson pouring in 25 points and Swin Cash good for 18 points.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

Dodgers at Cubs – The uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley has kept this game’s total from being posted.

Lines to keep an eye on

Lakers at Suns – A few sportsbooks have moved the spread in this game to a pick ‘em after opening Phoenix as 1-point favorites. The total has dropped a point down to 221 since opening despite all three games of this series going OVER.

Braves at Marlins – Most books have elevated the total in this game to 9 after opening at 8.5.

Pirates at Reds – Red-hot Cincy opened as a -155 favorite but the moneyline has jumped to as high as -175 on some boards.

Rangers at Royals – The total for this game has skyrocketed upward after opening at 9. Some markets are offering 9.5 while a few others have a total of 10 posted.

Astros at Brewers – Shops have raised the total in this game to 9.5 after opening at 9.

Diamondbacks at Rockies – The total for this affair has dropped to 9.5 after most books opened at 10.

Phoenix Mercury at Tulsa Shock – Sharp bettors were all over the UNDER in this game, betting the total down to 178.5 after opening at 182. The last two games between these two teams (2009) went OVER but one of those finishes was overtime-induced.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Yankees at Twins – A 40 percent chance of rain is called for.

Rangers at Royals – A 40-50 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

Nationals at Giants – A 70 percent chance of precipitation is called for.

      Who’s hot

The Suns have played to the OVER in six of their last seven games.

The home team has won seven straight games in the Storm-Mystic series (WNBA).

The Dodgers are 8-2 over a 10-game stretch.

      Who’s not

Tulsa (WNBA) is 0-2 SU and ATS at home this season.

San Francisco is on a five-game losing streak.

The Mariners have dropped two straight and are 3-7 in their last 10 outings.

      Key stat

58.2 – Winning percentage of MLB home teams in Game 1 of a series this season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nationals catcher Pudge Rodriguez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back, the team announced Monday. Rodriguez, 38, the all-time leader in games caught, is hitting .325 with a homer and 16 RBIs this season. His veteran presence has aided in Washington’s decent start to 2010 while also providing guidance for a young, developing pitching staff.

      Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (-1, 221)

      Notable quotable

"It's 7-0, it's not a good thing to steal a base. That's no respect for the other team. Whatever happens happens, but it's not showing respect. It's 7-0 when you steal second and third. I think it's bad baseball.”

-- White Sox pitcher Freddy Garcia said after Florida stole two bases in fourth inning with a 7-0 lead. Chicago was not pleased the Marlins broke one of baseball’s unwritten rules and retaliated by plunking a hitter.

      Tips and notes

      - The Suns employed a zone defense in the second quarter of Game 3 that held Los Angeles to 15 points. Phoenix carried through with the scheme during the second half and ultimately held the Lakers to 109 points on 48 percent shooting – well below the 126.0 ppg and 58 percent shooting from Games 1 and 2. Every game in this series has gone over but Sunday’s was the lowest-scoring affair so far, likely because of the zone defense. Kobe Bryant said his team’s strength is getting the ball in the paint so expect L.A. to look down low in Game 4, which should also slow the pace.

      - It’s amazing what people can do in the face of adversity. Kenshin Kawakami was on the verge of being demoted to the bullpen on May 14, depending on how his start went that day. The Ninja gave up three runs in that outing and struck out seven while the Braves won 6-5. In his next start, Kawakami pitched a shutout over 6.0 innings on the mound – a game Atlanta won 5-4. It’s apparent the right-hander has a new source of inspiration and the Bravos are +110 with him on the hill Tuesday.

      - Since Dallas Braden’s perfect game, he’s been just okay. In two starts, the southpaw has given up two and four earned runs – both losses. But apparently there was an excuse. Likely in correlation with the media frenzy that came along with perfection, Braden came down with the flu. After his last start, he said the illness was still lingering and that he felt “beat up…like I just went 12 rounds.” Flu symptoms can stay in the body for quite some time so backing Braden Tuesday would be ill-advised.

        Tuesday's six-pack

Early odds to win national championship in college basketball when next winter rolls around............

        6-1-- Duke
        10-1-- Michigan State
        12-1-- Purdue
        20-1-- Kentucky/Villanova/Kansas/Ohio State
        30-1-- West Virginia
        75-1-- BYU

        *************************************************

Tuesday's List of 13 (+1) Looking at the American League.....

        14) Mariners-- Padre-Mariner game Friday had total of 6; never saw that in game that had a DH in it. Of course, it ended 15-8; then Seattle scored one run each in losing last two games this weekend.

        13) Indians-- Worst home record in AL (7-13). Pitchers have 1.31 ratio of strikeouts to walks, worst mark in the major leagues. Thats what happens when you have back-to-back Cy Young winners, then you go and trade both of them. They'll face Sabathia in Bronx this weekend.

        12) Royals-- 6-4 since Ned Yost took over as manager. Tied for big league lead in batting average (.279) but 20th in majors in runs scored, indicating what a misleading stat batting average can be.

        11) Orioles-- Allowed 435 hits in 393 IP; they've got Tillman/Arietta on the farm, ready for big leagues. Hope Tremblay gets chance to see them pitch before they fire him. They shouldn't be 26th in runs scored.

        10) White Sox-- 24th in OB%, 23rd in runs, 24th in total bases, but they struck out only 216 times, least in major leagues, 198 less than Arizona's hitters. Pierzynski becomes 10/5 man next month, can veto any trades, so would make sense if Pale Hose traded him (Texas??) before then.

        9) Angels-- What does it say when Kendry Morales isn't in top five in the voting for AL 1st basemen for All-Star Game? Angels are 21-26, thanks in part to major downgrade in DH from Guerrero to Matsui.

        8) A's-- Gio Gonzalez has been traded three times in his career, twice by the White Sox........12/8/05-- Traded from ChiSox to Phillies as part of a three-player package for Jim Thome.......12/6/06-- Traded back to the Sox with Gavin Floyd, for Freddy Garcia.........1/3/08-- Traded to the A's with Ryan Sweeney and a minor leaguer for Nick Swisher.

You watch him pitch now, and you wonder how anyone traded him.

        7) Red Sox-- Won six of last seven games, heating up at same rate as Big Papi's bat. Need Beckett's back to get healthy, but they're only couple of games out in the Wild Card race.

        6) Blue Jays-- Is Cito Gaston the most underrated manager of the last 30 years? Blue Jays give Roy Halladay away, are still 27-20, only half-game out of Wild Card race. Gaston is 845-780 in his 12th year on Jays' bench. Coming into Monday's games, Toronto had hit 16 more HRs than any other major league team.

        5) Tigers-- 14-6 at home, 11-13 on road; lead major leagues with 14 saves in 16 opportunities (86%). Did you that Brandon Inge is only 5-11, but can dunk a basketball? He's that good an athlete.

        4) Rangers-- Pending backruptcy/sale of team could be lone roadblock in pennant race; once sale goes through, they figure to add salary, meaning Oswalt and/or Pierzynski could be coming to Arlington. If sale is delayed it opens the door for my A's to make surprising run at AL West crown.

        3) Twins-- Have walked 13 less batters than any other team in big leagues which is big part of why they win. Rauch has been huge filling in as closer for injured Nathan. Liriano is almost back to his '06 form. New ballpark allowed them to re-sign Mauer, keeping team a contender.

        2) Bronx-- Did you know there's going to be a college football bowl game in the Bronx this December? Inagine those two lucky teams; while other kids go off to bowls in Hawai'i, California or Florida, two lucky teams get to spend a week in December in the South Bronx. Excellent.

        1) Rays-- They've got eight guys either arbitration eligible or free agents to be this winter; Garza/Soriano might be only two they keep. Crawford, Bartlett, Pena, Balfour, Navarro, Upton could all take a walk.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (-1, 221)

Is a zone defense all the Suns needed to slow down the Lakers? It looked that way during Game 3. Phoenix coach Alvin Gently let his boys play zone for the game’s entirety and the move seemed to take away the Lakers attack in the paint.

"We did a good job of making our rotation in the zone," Gentry told the LA Daily News. "They were getting some shots, but for the most part they were jump shots rather than shots in the paint, and that is what we wanted to try and limit."

Will the zone work again after the Lakers had a chance to prepare for the defensive set? That’s the million-dollar question because we know the Suns have no hope of trying to guard the Lakers man-to-man.

Not to rain on the Suns' parade too much, but they were helped quite a bit by some hometown officiating. Phoenix’s free throw edge (42-20) canceled out its pitiful shooting from long range.

And how bad of a sign is it that the Lakers finished with 109 points and the Suns think they did a good job defensively?

          Pick: Lakers

Game of the day: L.A. Lakers at Phoenix Suns
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (-1, 221)

Game 4 of the Western Conference finals resumes Tuesday night in Phoenix where the Suns hope to even up their series with the Lakers.

            That’s Amar’e

The Suns got back in their series vs. the Lakers thanks largely to the 42 points and 11 rebounds Amar’e Stoudemire supplied in a 118-109 victory over the in Game 3 in Phoenix on Sunday.

The loss severed the Lakers’ eight-game winning streak and narrowed their series lead to one game.

After being disparaged for his bad defense and eyebrow-raising comments about Lamar Odom, Stoudemire finally stepped his game up with his best postseason performance since the 42 points he posted against San Antonio in 2005.

“Everybody has the right to have their opinions. So I can't really comment on their opinions," the Phoenix All-Star big man told reporters. "But from my standpoint, you can never question my determination, my focus, my dedication… My dedication to the game is at an all-time high."

His effort did not surprise L.A. guard Kobe Bryant. “He wasn't going to come out here and roll over. I saw this coming."

Odom, meanwhile, made only 4-of-14 shots and had 10 points and six rebounds before fouling out.

“It was one of those games. It happens… He had a wonderful game," Odom said. "He got to the hole and was forceful. He played great."

            Red stripe

Stoudemire’s awakening served the Suns well – particularly at the free throw line. Phoenix made 37 of 42 freebies, including 14-of-18 by Stoudemire. The Lakers were 16-for-20 at the charity strip.

An almost unthinkable halftime free throw margin of 20 to 3 in the Suns’ favor negated another strong effort on the offensive glass by the Lakers.

It is what kept the Lakers in the game. In the first half, Los Angeles rebounded 29 percent of its misses, leading to 13 second-chance points. Nonetheless, the defending champs trailed by seven at the break.

"We certainly didn't come out to play the way I wanted," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said, "and we certainly didn't play the way I wanted at the end."

Jackson drew what he said was his first technical of the year in the second quarter, when the Suns were 13 of 15 at the line and his team hadn't even shot a free throw.

As a result of failing to get to the line, L.A. settled for 32 shots from downtown, the most in Lakers playoff history. They made nine (28.1 percent) - which was actually better than Phoenix's 5-for-20 shooting (25 percent) from beyond the arc.

Home is where the winners live

Home teams have ruled in the playoffs this season.

The Suns won their fifth-straight home playoff game Sunday, the club's longest single postseason home win streak since May 1993 when they last reached the NBA Finals. Los Angeles last won a playoff game in Phoenix on April 26, 2006.

In games through Sunday, hosts in the playoffs this season have gone 47-22 straight up and 40-27-2 against the spread, including 36-20-1 ATS as favorites.

The Lakers are 3-3 SU and 2-3-1 ATS on the road in the postseason, but 7-0 and 5-2 ATS at home. Los Angeles would have home-court advantage in the NBA Finals over Boston.

On the flip side, the Suns are 5-1 SU and ATS at home and 4-3 SU and ATS on the playoff road this campaign.

            Star struck

Lakers center Andrew Bynum took a step back in Game 3. He played just 7:31 minutes, scored only two points and was in foul trouble from the beginning.

His absence made it easier for Stoudemire and company to drive toward the basket over and over. Bynum has torn cartilage in the knee and won't be pain-free until he has surgery. He is averaging 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in the West finals and will be available for Game 4 despite previous reports saying he could be out.

"I'll talk to him and see how he feels about it," Jackson said. "I think he was ineffective. There were some things that got by him."

Meanwhile, Suns’ star G Steve Nash again had trouble scoring from the field, but finished with 17 points, 15 assists and only one turnover in 38 minutes.

Nash broke his nose and displaced cartilage during a collision with Derek Fisher in the final minute of Game 3. He practiced with the team on Monday and then underwent surgery to repair the damage. Nash will be in the starting lineup Tuesday.

"I think we would have been surprised if he would have gone out of the game," Grant Hill said. "He's fine. No Friday the 13th mask, no Rip Hamilton mask, no Ginobili tape. He'll be ready to go, so it wasn't that bad."

            From the archives

            • The Lakers are 11-3 SU and 10-4 ATS in this series since 2007, but 0-2 ATS when playing off an SU and ATS defeat.

            • Los Angeles is 8-1 SU and ATS off a SU and ATS playoff loss the last two seasons.

            • Phoenix is 13-26-1 ATS at home in the playoffs off a win.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers (-155, 9.5)

When this series is over, one team will hold the worst record in the National League and the other will likely have the second-lowest winning percentage.

These two squads have combined for all of 32 wins this season – the same amount as the Rays.

"It's tough times," Houston first baseman Geoff Blum told the team's official website. "We've just got to keep battling. There's nothing we can point to that's going to turn the tide. We have to keep playing hard, and that's all you can do."

The Brew Crew has owned Houston in Milwaukee recently, winning 18 of the last 23 meetings at Miller Park and six-of-seven. The Brewers also have their porous bullpen situation figured out, for now, moving the ineffective Trevor Hoffman to the setup role.

Felipe Paulino hasn’t earned a victory yet this season (0-6) and the Astros are 1-7 when he takes the mound. Look for the trend to continue Tuesday.

              Pick: Brewers

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants (-115, 8.5)

The Giants were just beat down by their Bay Area baseball brethren.

Oakland outscored San Francisco 10-1 in a three-game sweep and the Athletics pitchers held Giants hitters to 14 hits and zero home runs.

"It's really, really tough. It's frustrating," said Bengie Molina after the team was shutout in two straight games. "It's very sad. Every day we go out there and don't score."

Manager Bruce Bochy even juggled hitters around in the lineup Sunday, moving Aaron Rowand to the No. 6 spot and Andres Torres to leadoff to try and find a spark, but results remained the same.

The ageless Livan Hernandez is one of baseball’s biggest surprises this year with a 1.62 ERA and will look to keep the San Fran’s bats under wraps Tuesday.

The Giants should be searching for a bat to stick in the middle of their order but until that happens expect this team to cash plenty of unders behind stellar pitching and sub-par hitting.

              Pick: Under

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Anibal Sanchez, Florida Marlins

Sometimes mistakenly thought as a throw-in to the Josh Beckett-Hanley Ramirez trade, Anibal Sanchez is starting to pitch again like the hurler who was one of the Red Sox’s top prospects.

He’s won two straight decisions and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his last six starts.

"This is the most consistency that I've seen coming out of him," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez told the reporters after Sanchez threw a career-high 119 pitches in 5-1 win over the Cardinals last Wednesday. "That's good, that's really good."

It’s a good thing for Florida backers too.

                Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks

Not all pitchers can cut it in the Big Apple. Former Yankee prospect Ian Kennedy sure does seem to be happy to be out of New York. The 25-year-old righty has been one of the few bright spots for Arizona this season.

Kennedy sports a tidy 3-1 strikeout to walk ratio along with a modest 3.24 ERA, and appears to be getting even better as the season progresses. He struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just one run in eight of innings of work last week against the Giants.

                Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds

It all must seem pretty easy right now for Reds rookie pitcher Mike Leake. The 22-year-old righty became the first hurler since 1995 to go straight from the draft to a big league roster.

And it looks like the Reds were right to allow Leake to skip minor league ball. He’s yet to allow more than five runs in a start and his control, which was a problem early on, is beginning to come around.

The Reds are 8-2 in Leake’s 10 trips to the bump and oddsmakers have pegged the youngster as a favorite in just two of those outings.

                Slumping

                Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers

We should have all known Randy Wolf was destined to fail as soon as he signed on the dotted line to pitch for the Brewers. You see, Milwaukee is where free agent pitchers go to die. Just ask Jeff Suppan.

After a miraculous campaign with the Dodgers in 2009, Wolf decided to leave Los Angeles’ spacious ballpark for Milwaukee’s bandbox home field. The results have been predictable.

Wolf is 3-4 with an ERA north of 5.00 and opposing hitters are batting .325 against the southpaw. Wolf surrendered six runs in each of his last two appearances and the Brew Crew are 1-4 in his last five trips to the mound.

                  This Day in Baseball
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 25 in Baseball History...

1906 - Jesse Tannehill snaps the Boston Pilgrims' 20-game losing streak (19 at home, both A.L. records) with a 3-0 win over the White Sox. Both Boston teams will finish last, while both Chicago teams finish first. It's the first time two cities have had two winners and two cellar-dwellers.

1919 - Ever-popular Casey Stengel, now a Pirate, is good-naturedly applauded when he comes to bat in the seventh inning at Brooklyn. He doffs his cap in response and, to everyone's delight, releases a sparrow he had hidden there.

1922 - Babe Ruth is suspended one day and fined $200 for throwing dirt on an ump after being called out on a play at second base, then going into the stands after a heckler. He is also stripped of his title as team captain.

1935 - Babe Ruth has a last hurrah, hitting three home runs at Pittsburgh. The final one, the last of his 714 career home runs, is the first to clear the right field grandstand at Forbes Field and is measured at 600 feet.

1937 - After hitting a home run against the Yankees in his prior at bat, Mickey Cochrane suffers a skull fracture from a Bump Hadley pitch. Coach Del Baker will run the team for the hospitalized Detroit leader, who will never return to active play.

1941 - Ted Williams raises his batting average over .400 for the first time during the season. His run to be the first since Bill Terry in 1930 to exceed the magic number will be marked in newspapers throughout the season, although it will often give way to the batting streak by Joe DiMaggio.

1951 - Giants rookie Willie Mays, who was hitting .477 with Minneapolis, goes 0-for-5 in his major league debut against the Phils.

1953 - Max Surkont of the Braves fans eight Reds in a row, establishing a new major league mark, as the Braves win 10-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. Surkont strikes out seven in a row before rain delays the game, then strikes out Andy Seminick to start the fifth inning. Surkont fans 13 on the way to his sixth straight win.

1960 - George Crowe's major league-record 11th pinch-hit home run, off Don McMahon, gives the Cardinals a 5-3 win over the Braves. Crowe began the season tied with Smoky Burgess and Gus Zernial in career pinch home runs.

1964 - Ground is broken for a new stadium in St. Louis.
1975 - Cleveland's Dennis Eckersley, in his first major league start, hurls a three-hit shutout in beating Oakland 6-0.

1981 - Carl Yastrzemski plays in his 3,000th major league game, scoring the winning run in Boston's 8-7 triumph over Cleveland. Yaz joins Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, and Hank Aaron as the only major leaguers to appear in 3,000 games.

1982 - Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs fans Garry Templeton in the third inning of a 2-1 loss to the Padres to become the seventh pitcher in major league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.

1984 - The Red Sox trade pitcher Dennis Eckersley and minor leaguer Mike Brumley to the Cubs for veteran Bill Buckner, who had been benched in Chicago in favor of Leon Durham but will immediately become Boston's starting first baseman.

1989 - After shopping him for several months, the Mariners finally trade star pitcher Mark Langston to Montreal for pitchers Randy Johnson, Brian Holman, and Gene Harris.
