    Daily Sports Roundup: May 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Phillies get a visit from the Red Sox, the Padres take on the Mariners, and the Sharks and Hawks take the ice in Chicago.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The interleague schedule begins around Major League Baseball on Friday, with Boston at Philadelphia in one of the marquee matchups. John Lackey (4-2, 4.86 ERA) is slated to take on Cole Hamels (4-2, 4.29 ERA) in that contest. Righthander Lackey was knocked around in each of his last two starts for the Red Sox, giving up 11 earned runs on 17 hits over 13 innings of work against the Tigers and Blue Jays. Lefthander Hamels beat the Brewers in his last trip to the mound, surrendering two earned runs on six hits over 6 2-3 innings in that outing.

Other games on tap for Friday: Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati at Cleveland, Baltimore at Washington, the Yankees at the Mets, Tampa Bay at Houston, the Cubs at Texas, Florida at the White Sox, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Colorado at Kansas City, the Angels at St. Louis, Toronto at Arizona, Detroit at the Dodgers, San Francisco at Oakland, and San Diego at Seattle. Wade LeBlanc (2-1, 1.54 ERA) will take on Cliff Lee (1-2, 2.08 ERA) in that Padres/Mariners matchup. Lefthander LeBlanc fell to the Dodgers last time out despite giving up just one run over seven innings. Lefthander Lee is also coming off a hard-luck defeat, as he held the Rays to just two runs on five hits over eight innings while fanning 10.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL's Western Conference final continues on Friday night, with San Jose at Chicago in Game 3 of the series. The Blackhawks have put the Sharks on the ropes, winning the first two games of the series in San Jose earlier in the week. Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Jonathan Toews, and Troy Brouwer all scored for the Hawks in Tuesday's 4-2 Game 2 win, with Antti Niemi stopping 25 of 27 San Jose shots. Evgeni Nabokov made 18 saves in the loss for the Sharks, while Patrick Marleau scored twice. Oddsmakers have Chicago listed as the -155 favorite for Friday night's matchup, with the total for the contest listed at 5.5 goals.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA schedule for Friday, with Connecticut at Atlanta and New York at Washington. The Liberty won their season opener over Chicago on Sunday, getting 22 points from Cappie Pondexter in the 85-82 home victory. Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 20 points in the win. The Mystics have started the season at 2-0, beating Indiana (72-65) and Minnesota (87-76) in their first two outings. Monique Curry poured in 27 points for Washington in their road victory over the Lynx on Sunday, while Katie Smith was good for 16 points.

      Friday's six-pack

-- Reds led 8-0 in second inning, 9-3 in ninth, before Atlanta exploded for seven runs in bottom of ninth to stun Cincinnati, 10-9.

-- Mariners scored three in bottom of ninth to nip Toronto, 4-3, a loss that prevents the Blue Jays from tying for the lead in Wild Card race.

-- Seattle has scored two or less runs in 17 of its first 41 games.

-- Phils and Texas lead their divisions by four games each; Rays lead the AL East by five full games.

-- Highest-ranked golfer at Byron Nelson tournament in Dallas is #17 Hunter Mahan; this used to be one of the more prominent PGA stops.

-- Home ice held up as Montreal beat the Flyers 5-1, ending Philly's winning streak at six. Flyers lead series 2-1.

      **************************************************

Friday's List of 13 (+3)....Taking a look at National League teams

      16) Astros-- Old nucleus with lousy farm system; top catching prospect Castro is hitting .259 with no HRs in minors. Carl Crawford comes back to his hometown this weekend. Astros need to sign him this winter.

      15) Brewers-- As an A's fan, could have told Mr Attanasio that manager Ken Macha is horrible; hiring Willie Randolph as bench coach made it even worse. Plus closer Hoffman allowed 28 baserunners in last 13 IP, is no longer the closer. Been a miserable season so far.

      14) Diamondbacks-- On pace to have worst bullpen in the last 42+ years; they're 14-0 when they score 6+ runs, 4-24 when they don't.

      13) Pirates-- Kentucky will start five freshmen again next winter; at some point, won't they lose scholarships? Their APR has to be terrible; its not like any of the kids going to the NBA are continuing their education.

      12) Cubs-- On bright side, they're 7-1 when Carlos Silva starts; this is the same guy who was 5-18 in 34 starts the last two years, allowing 254 hits in 183.2 IP. Other than rookie SS Castro, the rest of the news is dismal.

      11) Mets-- They put the fun in dysfunction; players don't trust either the trainers or front office, the owner seems like a rich imbecile, but at least in his last 104 IP, Johan Santana hasn't allowed a leadoff walk. He probably wants to beat up his agent for letting him sign on with this circus.

      10) Nationals-- They sold 144 Stephen Strasburg t-shirts for $20 each on Wednesday in Rochester, and he played for the road team. Rumor has his big league debut coming June 4 at home against the Reds. So far in three AAA starts, he hasn't allowed a run in 18.1 IP.

      9) Rockies-- 8-14 in last 22 road games; they scored 13 runs in their last five games overall. Todd Helton has five doubles, one HR in 119 ABs, but he did get on base five times Thursday. Colorado is still only team not to have a home run from #3 spot in the batting order.

      8) Braves-- Jason Heyward struck out 26 times in 75 April ABs; in May, he's fanned four times in 48 ABs. Winning a game when you're down 9-3 in ninth inning can do wonders for a team.

      7) Marlins-- Would rank them higher, but owner is Steinbrenner wannabe and fully capable of firing respected manager Gonzalez midstream. They came out of Hanley Ramirez mess smelling like a rose, at least so far.

      6) Dodgers-- Won 10 of last 11 games, despite Ethier/Ramirez both being banged up and having to use suspects like Ely/Ortiz/Haeger/Monaserios as starting pitchers. Elsewhere in LA, I had no idea Phil Jackson makes $12M a year. Its good to be dating the owner's daughter.

      5) Reds-- Would be on top of NL Central had they held onto 9-3 lead in ninth inning in Atlanta Thursday, just their 8th loss in last 24 games. It'll be interesting to see if they promote Cuban lefty Chapman this summer.

      4) Cardinals-- Last year, St Louis had .360 on-base percentage at leadoff spot; this year so far, .304. Redbirds are hitting just .243 with runners in scoring position and two outs. Other than that, most of the hitting stats are pretty much the same as last year's.

      3) Giants-- Big gap between top two spots on this list; catching prospect Buster Posey is hitting .338 in AAA, with 22 walks in 26 games. After an ugly loss at Arizona last night, was potentially uglier scene with players/ coaches not very happy with home plate umpire Wegner as game ended.

      2) Padres-- All the AL East-obsessed national writers can stop with the Adrian Gonzalez-to-Boston stories; as long as these Padres contend, it is inconceivable that they'll move an affordable contract with very popular player who doesn't become a free agent until after the 2011 season.

      1) Phillies-- All they do is win......and now Jimmy Rollins is back; before Angel Pagan homered and started triple play in same game this week, last guy to do it was Ted Kazanski of the '55 Phillies. Kurt Suzuki homered and grounded into a triple play in the same game last month.

What bettors need to know: Sharks at Blackhawks
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Chicago Blackhawks (-155, 5.5)

              Chicago leads series 2-0.

              United we fall

With a 2-0 series lead, you assume the Chicago Blackhawks would be happy to have home ice for the next two games of the Western Conference final.

However, Chicago has struggled inside the United Center, posting a 3-3 record at home this postseason. The Blackhawks dropped their last game in Chicago, 4-1, to the Vancouver Canucks and surrendered home ice in Game 1 of the conference semifinals, losing 5-1. Overall, Chicago has been outscored 14-19 at the United Center in the playoffs.

"We know how we want to play at home," forward Patrick Kane told NHL.com. "Keep it simple, not give too big of a show. Keep (fans) in the game right off the hop. Sometimes I think at home, whether it's the national anthem or just playing in front of a big crowd, you want to put on a show for them. That's not necessarily what we have to do. The biggest thing is playing a simple game like we have on the road."

The Blackhawks were one of the most successful home teams in hockey this season. They went 29-8-2-2 inside the United Center, scoring 3.26 goals per home contest – third best in the NHL.

              Blood in the water

Getting pushed around for the first two games of the series would make any team angry. The San Jose Sharks would rather get even, after losing both games at home to the Blackhawks.

San Jose is looking to up the intensity and push back as the Western Conference semifinal swings to Chicago. The Sharks veteran members are trying to keep that intensity focused on winning and not boil over into frustration.

"Obviously, I don't want to be in this position, but this is a good time for us to come together here and kind of raise our middle finger and just do it together," defenseman Dan Boyle told ESPN. "It's going to take a lot of work."

The Sharks have outshot the Blackhawks in both games but have just three goals to show for their 72 shots on goal.

San Jose struggled on offense against the Colorado Avalanche in the opening round, scoring just one goal in Game 1, getting shutout in Game 3 and netting only two goals in Game 4. However, the Sharks dug in to close out the series with 10 total goals in the final two games. Then they blasted the Detroit Red Wings with three straight four-goal performances before the well went dry again.

The Sharks offense has netted only six total goals in their last four contests, playing under the total in two of those outings.

“I expect them to respond, it’s as simple as that,” San Jose coach Todd McClellan told reporters. “We’ve worked hard to get to where we are. We’ve had to overcome a lot. We’re in a situation where we have to do it again. I think throughout this playoff we’ve built character. This gives us an opportunity now to add to that.

“We’ve always boasted about our leadership in the locker-room, the ability for guys to take others with them and lead them in the right direction. We’ll need that now.”

              Weakest link?

Heading into the postseason, most analysts picked the Blackhawks to contend for the Stanley Cup. Their biggest knock against Chicago was goaltender Antti Niemi.

The rookie was thrust into the playoff blender and, while there have been some rough outings, he’s come out as one of the biggest stories in the NHL. Niemi has turned away 69-of-72 shots in this series including holding the Sharks’ talented offense to one goal on 45 shots in Game 1.

“He works hard every day,” defenseman Brian Campbell told Yahoo! Sports. “He’s a good goalie, he’s come a long way. Give him credit for the work he’s put in. He deserves a lot what he’s getting.”

In the postseason, Niemi is 10-4 with a 2.41 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. He’s also well aware of the pressure that San Jose will bring after falling two games behind.

“We were ready for them to come at us hard early, and I think they might have got a little frustrated when they didn’t score,” he told reporters. “It would have been a real bad situation for us if they scored, they would have got a lot of energy from this.”

Cincinnati Reds at Cleveland Indians (+105, 9)

After the Cavaliers were ousted from the NBA Playoffs, the state of Ohio had one thing to be happy about as the Reds led the NL Central for a few days.

But after Cincy’s bullpen blew a six-run lead in the bottom of the ninth to lose to the Braves 10-9 Thursday, the Buckeye State might be on suicide watch.

"It was a horrible ending," said manager Dusty Baker, who was almost in tears after the game. "Boy, that was a tough one."

And for Ohio residents who prefer the American League squad, things haven’t been sailing smoothly. Cleveland placed Grady Sizemore on the DL this week and lost shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for at least eight weeks after he broke his arm.

The Indians are losers of four consecutive games, plating only 12 runners and hitting .199 during that span.

"It's been a struggle," manager Manny Acta said. "We're not hitting balls out of the ballpark and we're striking out too much. Something has got to give."

Both starters Friday are coming off complete game wins. Bronson Arroyo gave up a pair of earned runs while beating the Cardinals last week while Jake Westbrook is coming off a one-run outing in Baltimore.

Unless the Reds can explode for an eight-run inning in back-to-back games expect runs to come at a premium in this affair.

                    Pick: Under

San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners (-170, 6.5)

The Padres are slowly extending their lead in the NL West and low and behold, they are doing it with their bats as of late.

San Diego had scored 16 runs in its two ballgames going into Thursday night. Slugger Adrian Gonzalez broke out with a six-RBI game Wednesday and thinks he is beginning to shake off the winter rust.

"My last two games I started making a couple of adjustments at the plate the last couple of at-bats," Gonzalez said. "I kept telling my wife 'It's close.' I told her that by the time I get to Seattle, I think I'm going to be swinging the bat pretty good because of those adjustments."

Manager Bud Black also made a lineup move Wednesday that proved to jumpstart the offense. He moved speedy outfielder Will Venable to the leadoff spot after hitting in the five- or six-hole all season.

Venable responded by going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, a walk, a stolen base and four runs scored. The Friars may have found a leadoff man after experimenting with four other hitters in that spot.

Even with Cliff Lee on the hill, there isn’t any way the offensively-challenged Mariners should be laying this kind of chalk, especially to a team playing as well as the Dads.

                    Pick: Padres

Udog thanks for the information you post here.

Any chance the Duenkel Index is going to be posted today?

                              Thanks again
