Very few teams in basketball history shoot 58% from floor and lose, so no surprise Lakers breezed in Game 1; Suns are 0-3 vs LA at Staples so far this year, losing by 19-20-21 points, but they're 4-2 on the road in playoffs. Gasol was 10-13 from floor, Odom had 19/19 game off the bench, Bryant had 40 points. Suns' lack of size is evident; they were +2 in 24:04 that Lopez played, -23 in 23:56 he sat out. Lakers are 6-0 at home in playoffs, winning by 8-3-24-5-8-21 points.

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 215)

The Suns were supposed to run at L.A. with all they had while the Lakers were supposed to setup their half-court game and feed the big men down low.

Quite the opposite occurred in Game 1 of this series.

Kobe Bryant and his brethren in gold looked perfectly content with running with the Suns Monday. The Lake Show amassed nine fast-break points compared to Phoenix’s four and tossed up nine more shot attempts than the Suns.

But just because that style of play worked in Game 1 doesn’t mean Los Angeles will come back to it Wednesday.

"Sometimes we played a little bit too fast," Derek Fisher said. "Something we want to come back to in Game 2 is making sure Pau (Gasol) and Drew (Bynum) and Ron (Artest) and Kobe (Bryant) get their opportunities inside to test their D. That's where we're difficult for teams to guard."

The Suns will likely come out with a different approach in Game 2 as well. A zone defense could be called for early and often in order to keep the Lakers from shooting 58 percent from the floor again.

And after holding each of its first two playoff opponents to 102 points or fewer in every game, Phoenix will likely come out with a chip on its shoulder after surrendering 128 to L.A.

"We've just got to make sure we box [Lamar Odom] out," said Amar’e Stoudemire. "I think I focused so much on Gasol and Bynum to where he sneaked in there and got 19 boards."

With Game 1 sailing over the posted total by 25 points, this game’s number is five points higher than the first game and has already been bet up one point from its opener.

Look for a more inspired effort from both teams defensively in this matchup.

                        Pick: Under

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals (-166, 8)

There’s a storm brewin’ down in the Sunshine State and it’s not a Gulf Coast hurricane.

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was yanked from Monday’s game after three innings of play because he wasn’t hustling.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez also benched Ramirez Tuesday and said he would not see the field again until the 26-year-old addressed his teammates and gives an apology for lack of effort.

"We got a lot of people dogging it after ground balls," Ramirez said. "They don't apologize."

This isn’t the first time Ramirez has faced the wrath of his manager or teammates for a lackadaisical attitude. Earlier this season, Wes Helms had to be restrained because Ramirez showed up late for stretching and last year Dan Uggla was upset that Ramirez removed himself from a game.

"I think he's got to take care of some problems - let me retract that, take care of some issues,'' Gonzalez said. "When he handles this the right way, he'll be fine."

The ‘Fins have enough offensive talent to win without Ramirez but this distraction can’t be good for any team. Look for Jaime Garcia to continue his stellar rookie season and quiet Florida’s bats Wednesday.

                          Pick: Cardinals

Colorado Rockies at Houston Astros (-105, 9)

Rockies manager Jim Tracy has been forced into a circus act, having to juggle his pitching staff because of injuries, illnesses and weather.

Ubaldo Jimenez’s start was pushed from Friday to Saturday because of rain which created a need for a Wednesday starter.

Left-hander Greg Smith is likely to take the mound versus the Astros but that has not been confirmed by the Rockies. Most sportsbooks have Smith penciled onto the betting board, facing Houston’s Felipe Paulino.

The southpaw will be returning to the rotation after being demoted to the bullpen on May 10. Smith hasn’t pitched since that date and he had surrendered at least four runs in three of his last four starts prior to being removed from the rotation (1-2, 6.35 ERA).

Compounding matters for the Rockies is that the team made a 1,000-mile trek down to Texas late Tuesday night after finishing up a two-game series in Chicago.

The ‘Stros took five-of-seven from Colorado last season and Paulino struck out seven while giving up two earned in 6.0 innings of work during his last start against the Rocks.

It’s scary backing Houston in any situation but the aforementioned factors suggest the home team could steal a game here.

                          Pick: Astros

                            Daily Sports Roundup: May 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees get a visit from the Rays, the Nationals take on the Mets, and the Lakers look for another victory over the Suns.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's Western Conference Finals continue on Wednesday night with Game 2 between the Suns and Lakers in Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant and company had no trouble winning and covering at home in the opener of the series on Monday night, rolling to a 128-107 victory. Bryant was good for a game-high 40 points for Los Angeles in that contest, while Pau Gasol scored 21 points, and Lamar Odom chipped in with 19 points off the bench. Amare Stoudemire led the Suns' attack with 23 points in the loss, while Steve Nash picked up 13 points and 13 assists.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule on Wednesday has Kansas City at Cleveland, Minnesota at Boston, Baltimore at Texas, the Angels at the White Sox, Detroit at Oakland, Toronto at Seattle, and Tampa Bay at the Yankees. The Rays will send Wade Davis (3-3, 3.38 ERA) to the mound for Wednesday's matchup, and he'll take on New York's A.J. Burnett (4-1, 3.31 ERA). Righthander Davis was beaten by the Yankees in his first start of the year on April 10, allowing four runs over his six innings of work. Burnett beat the Rays in his trip to the mound on April 11, holding the division rival to just two runs on six hits over seven innings that day.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at Atlanta, Colorado at Houston, Florida at St. Louis, San Francisco at Arizona, San Diego at the Dodgers, and the Mets at Washington. Oliver Perez (0-3, 5.94 ERA) will take on Livan Hernandez (4-2, 1.46 ERA) in that Mets/Nationals matchup. Lefthander Perez was rocked by the Marlins in his most recent start, giving up seven runs on nine hits over his 3 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Hernandez beat the Mets in his first start of the season, holding them scoreless on just five hits over his seven innings of work.

                            Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA gets back into action with one game on the schedule for Wednesday, as Seattle hosts Minnesota. The Storm won their season opener against the Sparks on the weekend, getting an 81-67 home victory behind 23 points and 10 assists from Lauren Jackson. The Lynx are 1-1 on the season after splitting their games on the weekend, beating Tulsa 80-74 on Saturday and falling 87-76 to Washington on Sunday. Charde Houston had a team-high 19 points for Minnesota in Sunday's defeat, while Rashanda McCants had 18 points.

                              Who’s hot

The Lakers are 4-0 SU and ATS over a four-game span.

Tampa Bay has won four consecutive games.

The Dodgers were riding an eight-game winning streak going into Tuesday.

                              Who’s not

The Diamondbacks are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

Milwaukee has dropped eight straight outings, losing 8.94 units on the moneyline.

                              Key stat

Jan. 26 – Date the last time the Suns lost back-to-back games. Phoenix finished the regular season 28-7 after those consecutive losses.

                              Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley missed his second consecutive game against the Pirates Tuesday due to flu-like symptoms. Utley also sat out Monday’s affair and was replaced by Juan Castro. The All-Star player could return to action Wednesday but with the flu there could be a fatigue problem upon return. And other teammates could contract the illness so keep an eye on the news. Utley is batting .304 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs this season.

                              Game of the day

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 215)

                              Notable quotables

"The shots he made, we could run anybody at him -- we could run Schwarzkopf at him. It doesn't matter. He's going to make them. The shot he made at the end of the first quarter, that's what I'm talking about. That's why they pay him $30 million a year. I think he's the best finisher that ever played."

-- Suns coach Alvin Gentry said of Kobe Bryant’s shooting performance in Game 1 of the series where he posted 40 points on 13-of-23 shooting.

                              Tips and notes

                              - At the end of Game 1 in the Suns-Lakers series, TNT analyst Doug Collins repeatedly said he expects the Suns to execute a zone defense throughout Game 2. This would hopefully cool L.A.’s hot shooting (58 percent Game 1) because Phoenix played awful defense Monday. A zone scheme will always slow the pace of a basketball game because extra passes are called for to beat it. Steve Nash also said, “We want to cut down on their transitions". All this could mean a lower-scoring game than the 235 points seen in the opener.

                              - Marlins stud shortstop Hanley Ramirez will ride the pine until he apologizes to his team. Ramirez was yanked from Monday’s game for not hustling and then was benched again Tuesday. This isn’t the first time Ramirez has been benched for lack of hustle. Teammates have had issues with the efforts of Ramirez this season and manager Fredi Gonzalez said he won’t play until he apologizes, which likely isn’t going to happen soon. Ramirez is hitting .293 with seven homers and 20 RBIs this year.

                              - Lamar Odom had a breakout game against the Suns Monday. Apparently Phil Jackson cut off Odom’s pregame coffee supply because he felt his power forward was getting too amped up before games. No coffee could be the recipe for success as Odom had 18 points and 18 rebounds in the win. Odom will also have extra motivation in Game 2 after Amar’e Stoudemire called his first game “lucky”. When Odom is going, not many teams can beat the Lake Show.
