Magic lost for first time in playoffs in Game 1, rallying from 20 down to make it close at end; four of five series games this year stayed under the total. Celtics are 5-2 vs spread as playoff road underdog; they're playing with supreme confidence right now. Boston held Magic to 41.6% from floor in Game 1; Wallace chipped in with 13 points in 20:16 off bench. Magic scored 32 points in first half of Game 1, then 26 in 3rd quarter, 30 in 4th quarter- they better come to play from start here. Orlando turned ball over 18 times, was just 5-22 from arc in Game 1. Starting frontcourt of Barnes-Lewis-Howard better not shoot 6-24 from floor again.

                      Tuesday's six-pack

-- Pirates took over major league lead in innings pitched by bullpen with 142.2, passing the Mets. Pittsburgh's pitches got pelted by Phillies in a 12-2 beating in Philly. Ryan Howard knocked in six runs.
-- Cardinal starting pitchers (249 IP) have thrown most innings so far this season, with Tampa Bay's starters right behind them.
-- Mets' nitwit owner Jeff Wilpon flew all the way to Atlanta, but did not fire anyone; they just had a 90-minute meeting with all their brass. Have these people ever heard of the conference call?
-- Vijay Singh slipped to 51st in world rankings, first time since 1992 he is out of the top 50; if he doesn't get back into the top 50 this week, he will have to play his way into the US Open at Pebble Beach.
-- Adam Scott shot -11 for 36 holes Sunday to win Texas Open, quite a feat for a guy whose game had been suffering lately. Have to be in good shape to play so well for so long-- 36 holes is a lot of golf in one day.
-- BCS Championship game is January 10 this season? Awful late.

Tuesday's List of 13 (+1) Ranking the American League teams

                      14) Orioles-- Nolan Reimold got sent to the minor leagues and then was cut by one of the worst teams in our fantasy league, all in 12 hours. If you get cut by the Orioles, its even more insulting than getting released by a fantasy team. Funny thing, he's playing some first base down in minors and could return to Baltimore as a 1B. Another team in our league picked him up this morning. We'll see how that goes.

                      13) Royals-- They're 3-1 since firing Trey Hillman; they have this policy that minor leaguers have to play a year at each level. Bad idea; they've got this AA infielder named Moustakas who is hitting around .390. Bring the damn guy up and give the fans some hope. Fans need hope.

                      12) Mariners-- Seattle decided its hitting coach was the reason for dismal start, so they replaced Alan Cockrell (a former Tennessee QB) with guy named Alonzo Powell, the first American-born hitter to win three batting titles in a row in the Japanese Leagues. Seattle is owned by a Japanese company, so I guess that makes a little more sense.

                      11) Indians-- Tough times by Lake Erie. The Browns dumped their two QBs, then signed Jake Delhomme for some reason; no one knows if the Cavaliers will disband if Lebron James skips town and the Indians aren't any good........again. At least Carmona is a pretty good pitcher.

                      10) A's-- 1979 A's were 54-108 and had Mario Guerrero batting cleanup for some of that season; not Pedro or Vladimir, but Mario Geurrero, who had a lifetime batting average of .257 with seven career HRs. I was 19 and trust me, that was not a fun season. One win a week was my goal. Sadly, the 2010 A's don't hit much better than the '79 A's. They do pitch better.

                      9) White Sox-- Jerry Manuel was 500-471 as manager of the White Sox, finishing first or second in AL Central in five of six seasons, but he got fired and was replaced by Ozzie Guillen, who then won a World Series. Manuel is on this ice with the Mets; latest rash of pitching injuries should seal his fate. Will be interesting to see who the Mets replace him with.

                      8) Red Sox-- Monday's 11-9 loss, where they gave up five runs in first inning, four runs in the last, was an painful a loss in a meaningless game as I've seen in some time. Four hours of tug-of-war ending with a punch to the stomach. Only the Celtics are keeping Boston from mass depression.

                      7) Tigers-- Good luck to young Casper Wells of Schenectady, a local kid who just got called up by Detroit. I was coaching basketball at SHS when he was a senior; I'm pretty sure he tried out for the team, which ends our chances of getting free tickets, since he didn't make it. He's doing real well now though and we wish him the very best.

                      6) Angels-- There were 108 runs scored in 15 games Sunday, the lowest scoring day with a full schedule (7.2 runs/game) this season. April 19 was the only day with less runs/game scored- there were 8 games that day.

                      5) Rangers-- 47% of big league at-bats last three or less pitches, 65% last four or less; the way for pitchers to go deeper into games is to strike out less hitters. Very rare for a pitcher to face a hitter four times in a game.

                      4) Blue Jays-- AL East standings: Rays 27-11; Bronx 25-13; Blue Jays 23-17; Boston 19-20; Baltimore 12-27. Weird how Toronto is better now than when they had Roy Halladay. Life doesn't always make sense.

                      3) Twins-- Canadian Justin Morneau was 1-23 in his first 23 ABs north of the border, but is 13 for his last 43 (.302)-- he hit two homers Monday at Rogers Centre, as Minnesota beat up on the Blue Jays 8-3.

                      2) Bronx-- 9,299 at Camden Yards Monday night for Royals-Orioles, but I do believe it was a rainy night in Baltimore. Either way, it is the second smallest crowd in Camden Yards history. Bad times in Birdland.

                      1) Rays-- They've won their last three games in their last at-bat. Enjoy it while you can, Tampa Bay fans; this winter, you'll let Carl Crawford go, the greatest player in franchise history, and a downward spiral will start.

                        Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 18, 2010 from Len Berman.

                        1. Quick Hits
Despite being banged up, Kobe Bryant scores 40 points and the Lakers easily beat Phoenix in Game 1, 128-107.
The NBA draft lottery is tonight. The team with the worst record, the New Jersey Nets, has a 25% chance of winning.
Like old times. Alex Rodriguez and Marcus Thames both hit two run homers in the bottom of the 9th off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. Boston sinks under .500 and is closer to last place than first place, with an 11-9 loss.
Tiger Woods adds the British Open to his golf schedule.

                        2. Fine Whine

Lakers coach Phil Jackson loves to play psychology. Before the playoff series with Oklahoma City, he complained that Kevin Durant gets preferential treatment from the refs. That cost him a $35-thousand fine. The other day, before the Phoenix series, he bitched that Steve Nash illegally palms the ball. Nash wasn't called for it once last night, and the Lakers cruised to a win. Hey Phil, you've got 10 rings. Just shut up.

                        3. Gasoline Alley

A couple of things from the NASCAR race the other day. The stands were barely half full in Dover, Delaware. I can understand Mets attendance being down. Cost versus success of the team. But NASCAR? Not good news for those who say the economy has turned around. Also in that race, Jimmie Johnson was penalized for going too fast. C'mon. Going too fast at a car race? OK, he was leaving the pits and that's a safety issue. But don't people go to races to see crashes? Lets double the speed limit coming out of the pits. Watch those attendance numbers zoom.

                        4. Sibling Rivalry

According to the Wall Street Journal, older brothers are more successful in major league baseball. Of the 300 sets of brothers they studied, 58% of the older guys had better careers. They cite Hank Aaron over Tommy. Dizzy Dean over Paul. And Graig Nettles over Jim.
The first two brother acts I thought of were a couple of not so average Joes. DiMaggio and Torre. Of the three DiMaggio ballplayers, Joe was the middle child. And Joe Torre, younger brother of Frank, was the far superior player. So much for that theory. But another study found that younger brothers stole more bases than older. That the baby brother was more aggressive. Being a younger brother, I think that's right on.

                        5. Winning At All Costs

So if you heard a basketball coach would do anything to win, you'd say what else is new? Then if you heard the coach tried to bribe the refs, maybe you'd raise an eyebrow. What if you heard he was the coach of the boy's team at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in a Harrisburg suburb? Are you kidding me? A church league? Yes he was arrested. I'm sure his defense will be Proverbs 17:8 "A bribe is a charm to the one who gives it; wherever he turns, he succeeds." Then again, under the Pennsylvania State law that deals with bribery, Section 4701, he's probably screwed.

Happy Birthday: A couple of hall of famers. Reggie Jackson. 64. Brooks Robinson. 73.
Bonus Birthday: 30 Rock star Tiny Fey. 40.

Today in Sports: New York City ends night baseball games for the duration of World War II. 1942.
Bonus Event: The birth of East Side gridlock The United Nations moves its headquarters to New York City. 1951.
