    Daily Sports Roundup: May 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Flyers host the Canadiens, the Hawks take on San Jose, and the Celtics and Magic play Game 2 of their set in Orlando.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics will be looking to beat the Magic for the second straight game on Tuesday night when the teams play in Orlando in Game 2 of the Eastern Finals. Ray Allen was good for 25 points on Sunday afternoon as the Celtics grabbed a 1-0 series lead with a 92-88 road win as a 6.5-point underdog. Paul Pierce added 22 points for Boston in that win, while Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett were both held to just eight points. Vince Carter had a team-high 23 points in Sunday's losing cause for the Magic, while Jameer Nelson pitched in with 20 points in the contest. Dwight Howard had just 13 points in Game 1 to go along with 12 boards.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League on Tuesday offers up Minnesota at Toronto, the White Sox at Detroit, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at Baltimore, the Angels at Texas, Seattle at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. Josh Beckett (1-1, 7.46 ERA) is slated to return to the mound for the Red Sox on Tuesday, while CC Sabathia (4-2, 3.71 ERA) gets the ball for New York. Righthander Beckett missed his last scheduled start with a sore back, and he was blasted by the Yankees (nine runs in 5 1-3 innings) in his May 7 outing. Lefthander Sabathia took a no-decision against Boston on May 8, surrendering three runs over his 4 2-3 innings.

On the National League schedule for Tuesday it'll be Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Arizona at Florida, the Mets at Atlanta, Colorado at the Cubs, Washington at St. Louis, San Francisco at San Diego, Houston at the Dodgers, and Pittsburgh at Philadelphia. The Pirates' Zach Duke (2-4, 5.56 ERA) will try to get the better of Phillies ace Roy Halladay (6-1, 1.59 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Duke took the loss against the Reds in his last trip to the mound, giving up five runs on nine hits over five innings. Righthander Halladay had to settle for a no-decision against Colorado in his last start, surrendering two earned runs in 6 1-3 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL's conference finals continue on Tuesday with Chicago at San Jose and Montreal at Philadelphia. The Blackhawks grabbed a 1-0 series lead over the Sharks with a 2-1 road win in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon. Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago in that contest, while Antti Niemi made 44 saves. Jason Demers had San Jose's goal. The Flyers pounded the Canadiens 6-0 in the opener of the Eastern final on Sunday night, with Habs goalie Jaroslav Halak getting yanked after giving up four goals on just 14 shots. Flyers netminder Michael Leighton stopped all 28 Montreal shots in that victory.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

The total in the Rockies-Cubs game is OTB because the wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field is unpredictable. Check local forecast at gametime.

Lines to keep an eye on

Celtics at Magic – An opening total of 186.5 has been bet up to 188 in most markets. Game 1 of this series went under by eight points. There were only 73 points scored in the first half of that game.

Royals at Orioles – Most books have bumped the total in this game to 7.5 after opening at 7. The two teams’ aces, Zack Greinke and Kevin Millwood, will square off.

Yankees at Red Sox – Opening total of 9.5 has dropped to 9. Four out of the last five in this series have gone OVER.

Rangers at Blue Jays – Some shops have moved this game’s total to 8.5 after posting an opener of 8.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Brewers at Reds – A 40 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

White Sox at Tigers – A 40 percent chance of rain is called for with wind blowing across the diamond from third to first at 16 mph.

Diamondbacks at Marlins – There is a 40 percent chance of rain.

Rockies at Cubs – Wind will be blowing in from center field at 17 mph. There is also a 20 percent chance of rain.

Red Sox at Yankees – A 60 percent chance of showers looms in the forecast with a 14 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Nationals at Cardinals – Wind will be gusting out to center and right-center field at 14 mph.

Pirates at Phillies – There is a 60 percent chance of rain at the start of this matchup with the wind blowing in from right field at 13 mph.

      Who’s hot

The Celtics have won four consecutive playoff games, going 4-0 ATS in that stretch.

Toronto has won four games in a row and is 7-3 in its last 10.

The Flyers have won five straight games, outscoring opponents 21-8 during the streak.

      Who’s not

Montreal has scored one goal in its last three losses.

The Oakland A’s are in a five-game slide.

Milwaukee had dropped six straight outings going into Monday’s action.

      Key stat

1.88 – Earned Run Average of Reds’ pitchers over the last eight games going into Monday’s game.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Dodgers are expected to make a decision Tuesday as to whether to put outfielder Andre Ethier on the disabled list. Ethier suffered a fractured pinkie during batting practice of Saturday’s game. There is no treatment for his injury other than rest so the decision will hinge on whether or not Ethier feels discomfort when swinging or gripping the bat. Ethier leads the majors with a .392 average and 38 RBIs. He was replaced Saturday and Sunday by Garrett Anderson.

      Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (-7.5, 188)

      Notable quotables

"When you don’t do it for a few days, you forget how much you have to put into it, and we didn’t put enough into this game.”

-- Magic forward Rashard Lewis said of the team’s preparation and 3-point shooting in Game 1 of the series versus Boston.

      Tips and notes

      - Josh Beckett will make his first start in 11 days for Boston Tuesday since dealing with back spasms and being ineffective. The Red Sox “ace” currently holds a 7.46 ERA and the team skipped a start of his to give him some time to rest and then his back flared up. Beckett gave up nine runs in 5.1 innings on May 7 versus the Yankees so could be in for another rough outing Tuesday. Beckett was wild in that start, hitting two batters and admitted the ball wasn’t going where he wanted it to. He added that he was overthrowing which messed up his mechanics.

      - After shutting down Albert Pujols Sunday, Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo said the St. Louis slugger looks “uncomfortable” at the plate. He added that “a lot of off-speed stuff was getting him out” and maybe Pujols doesn’t have the good “pitch recognition right now that you expect." Pujols has only one home run in 55 May at-bats. Manager Tony LaRussa moved Pujols to the cleanup spot in the batting order Monday and Matt Holliday to third. Pujols hasn’t hit in the four-hole since 2003.

      - Brewers relief pitcher Manny Parra will make his first start of the season Tuesday. Parra is making a spot start because Milwaukee is juggling with its rotation after scratching Doug Davis before Sunday’s game because of a heart problem. Parra has made 15 relief appearances this season, compiling at 3.98 ERA. The lefty started 26 games in 2009, posting an 11-11 record with a 6.36 ERA. Parra has had control problems in the past. The Reds are -130 home favorites versus the Brew Crew.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (-7.5, 188)

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. That same saying is true when it comes to teams dependent on the 3-pointer.

When you’re on, you can bury an opponent. But when you’re off, you get a performance like the Orlando Magic’s 92-88 loss to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals Sunday. The Magic, who finished third in 3-point percentage and led the NBA in 3-point attempts, went just 5-for-22 from beyond the arc (22.7 percent) in Game 1.

Sharp-shooting forward Rashard Lewis was 0-for-6 from outside while point guard Jameer Nelson hit only two of his seven shots from 3-point range. Other perimeter threats Mickael Pietrus and J.J. Redick combined to hit 2-for-6 from downtown.

That poor shooting performance could have something to do with Orlando’s extended layoff after sweeping the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Magic had six days between series, leaving their outside touch a bit rusty for Sunday’s game.

“You don’t want to make excuses,” Redick told reporters. “When you don’t do it for a few days, you forget how much you have to put into it, and we didn’t put enough into this game.”

Orlando has attempted 254 3-pointers this postseason, knocking down 37 percent of them. With a bad shooting night behind them, basketball bettors can expect the Magic to come out firing in Game 2 and even this series at 1-1.

            Pick: Orlando

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5.5)

The Sharks thought they were done with all this talk about a postseason curse. San Jose rolled over the defending Campbell Trophy winners, the Detroit Red Wings, in the conference semifinals and appeared to have shaken any hex holding them back in the playoffs.

But, after a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference final Sunday, the curse chatter is starting again. The Sharks did everything in their power to win Game 1, firing 45 shots on goal but coming up with just one power-play goal.

“There’s a lot of emphasis on Game 2 now,” center Joe Pavelski told reporters. “We have to win. On home ice you want to win at least one, definitely. We’re on our heels a little bit and we have to respond.”

San Jose’s powerful offense has sputtered in the past three games. It managed just one goal in a 7-1 loss to Detroit in Game 4 of that second-round series. Then, it netted just two goals to eliminate the Red Wings with a 2-1 victory in Game 5. Add those efforts to Sunday’s close loss and the Sharks have managed just four goals on their last 106 shots.

With Chicago boasting one of the most underrated bluelines in hockey, scoring chances are going to be hard to come by. And with both goaltenders playing well, Game 2 could finish much like the series opener.

                Pick: Under

Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers (-155, 5)

The Canadiens’ faith in their goaltending will not be shook. Not even after suffering a 6-0 thumping at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final Sunday.

"No concern about that whatsoever," Michael Cammalleri told the Montreal Gazette. "Jaro's had games where pucks have gone in on him before and he's come back and played spectacular.

"Carey's also someone we have tons of confidence in. I don't think he's let in a goal in practice in two weeks. We love our goaltending."

But while Cammalleri isn’t stressing over the poise between the posts, he should be concerned about the Habs’ play on the other end of the ice. Montreal, which ranked 25th in the NHL in scoring, is not a good offensive club. If it wasn’t for Cammalleri and Brian Gionta catching fire in the playoffs, the Canadiens wouldn’t have made it out of the first round.

Montreal’s luck could be running out. The Habs actually outshot the Flyers 28-25 Sunday but managed just five shots on goal in the third period. Cammalleri registered only one shot for the game, failing to pick up a point for the first time in the last four games.

After tapping into a miraculous offense in the first two series, the well is running dry for the Canadiens in the conference final.

                Pick: Philadelphia

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles (-110, 7.5)

Sometimes a change of scenery, or manager, is all a team needs to get going.

Now don’t expect the Royals win the AL Central, but the boys in blue did take two out of three games from the White Sox under new manager Ned Yost.

Having been labeled as a great mentor to younger players, there were concerns about Yost being able to handle the veterans on the team. But it doesn’t sound like there’s a lack of connection or respect after three games.

"I know there are a lot of people panicking, but hopefully our new boss we have here can put this team together and play as a team and do the little stuff we need to do to win as a team,” said Jose Guillen.

The 34-year-old Guillen is one mercurial player that Yost must keep happy in order to maintain chemistry in the clubhouse. The Royals are 10-4 in games where Guillen has an RBI and 4-20 when he doesn’t. He has posted 15 RBIs in his last 14 outings versus Baltimore.

You’re not going to find a better price to back the reigning AL Cy Young winner, Zack Greinke, when facing a porous team like the Orioles.

                  Pick: Royals

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (-130, 9.5)

Dusty Baker has spat in the face of sabermetricians, holding firm to his belief that on-base percentage isn’t an underlying stat in baseball success unless those runners can score.

Whatever method Baker believes in is working. Through a quarter of the season, the manager has his Reds in first place in the NL Central.

Heading into Monday’s affair with Milwaukee, Cincinnati had outscored opponents 49-15 over an eight-game stretch, winning seven of those contests, and the club is hitting .314 during a 10-game span.

The Reds’ pitching has also been lights out during the team’s recent success. Reds pitchers as a whole have posted a 1.88 ERA over the last eight games.

The third component to success on the diamond, outside of hitting and pitching, is defense and Cincy hasn’t committed an error in 11 straight games.

The Reds are riding the momentum of a three-game sweep over the Cardinals while the Brewers have dropped six straight. Look for these teams to keep trending in opposite directions.

                  Pick: Reds

                    This Day in Baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 18 in Baseball History...

1912 - Detroit players went on strike to protest Ty Cobb's suspension. To avoid a forfeit and fine, manager Hughie Jennings recruited college players and others who played and lost to the Philadelphia A's 24-2. Joe Travers gave up all 24 runs.

1929 - The Brooklyn Dodgers outslugged the Philadelphia Phillies for a 16-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Babe Herman and Johnny Frederick had five hits apiece for Brooklyn. Frederick scored five times to give him a major league record eight runs in two games.

1957 - Dick Williams of the Orioles hit a ninth-inning, game-tying solo home run against Chicago's Paul LaPalme seconds before 10:20 p.m. — a time set as a curfew so the White Sox could catch a train out of Baltimore. If Williams had done anything else, Chicago would have won. The game was replayed from the beginning and Baltimore won.

1962 - Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew hit a grand slams in the first inning to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 14-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

1968 - Frank Howard hit his 10th home run in a six-game span to power the Washington Senators to an 8-4 victory over Detroit at Tiger Stadium.

1990 - The Baltimore Orioles tied an American League record with eight consecutive singles in a seven-run first inning against Bobby Witt to beat the California Angels 13-1.

1999 - Edgar Martinez hit three home runs, tying a major league record with five homers in two games, to give the Seattle Mariners a 10-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. Martinez homered twice in the opener of the series against Minnesota.

1999 - Arizona's Luis Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 30 games with a two-run, first-inning homer in a 7-3 victory over San Francisco. Gonzalez, whose streak matches the longest this decade, became the 37th player in major league history to reach 30.
