    Daily Sports Roundup: May 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees host the Red Sox, the Mets visit the Braves, and the NBA's West Finals hit the hardwood at Staples Center.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's Western Conference Finals gets underway on Monday night, with the Lakers hosting the Suns (9:00pm ET). Both Los Angeles and Phoenix swept away their second-round opponents, with the Lakers bouncing Utah 111-96 on the road in their clincher last Monday and the Suns getting past San Antonio by a score of 107-101 in Game 4 of their set last Sunday. The oddsmakers are siding with the Lakers at home in Monday's opening contest, as they're set as the 6-point favorites with a total of 210.5 points. Suns C Robin Lopez (back) is expected to play Monday, while Lakers G Sasha Vujacic (ankle) is questionable.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

There's a full slate in the American League on Monday, with Kansas City at Baltimore, the White Sox at Detroit, Minnesota at Toronto, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Texas, Seattle at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. The Red Sox will go with Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-1, 6.35 ERA) in their matchup with their rival, while New York will counter with Phil Hughes (5-0, 1.38 ERA). Righthander Matsuzaka is coming off his first quality start of the season, as he held the Blue Jays to one earned run on three hits over seven innings on May 11. Righthander Hughes blanked the Tigers over seven innings in his last trip to the mound, and he held the Red Sox to two runs over seven innings back on May 7.

Over in the National League on Monday it'll be Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Arizona at Florida, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Colorado at the Cubs, Washington at St. Louis, San Francisco at San Diego, Houston at the Dodgers, and the Mets at Atlanta. New York will go with Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 3.14 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Braves counter with Derek Lowe (5-3, 5.73 ERA). Righthander Pelfrey has been shaky since his strong start to the season; he gave up four runs on seven hits over 5 2-3 innings against the Nationals last time out. Righthander Lowe beat the Brewers last time out, surrendering two runs over his six innings.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Brewers-Reds is currently off pending the announcement of Milwaukee's starting pitcher. Sunday's scheduled starter Doug Davis was scratched with a heart condition, forcing the Brewers to scramble for a replacement in the rotation.

Total for Rockies-Cubs is off pending the wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field.

Lines to keep an eye on

Total in Suns-Lakers opened at 212 and dipped to 210.5. Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in L.A.

      Weather to watch

Forecast for Rockies-Cubs calls for 30 percent chance of showers.

White Sox-Tigers has 40 percent chance of rain.

Indians-Rays' forecast calls for 50 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Royals-Orioles has 70 percent chance of rain.

Forecast for Mariners-Athletics calls for 60 perent chance of showers.

Diamondbacks-Marlins has 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Forecast for Brewers-Reds calls for 50 percent chance of showers.

Mets-Braves has a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Forecast for Nationals-Cardinals calls for 60 percent chance of rain.

      Who's hot

Suns are 8-1 SU and ATS in their last nine.

Dodgers have won seven in a row.

      Who's not

Lakers are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 at home.

Mets have lost five in a row.

      Key stat

32 - Total points scored in the first half by the Magic in Sunday's Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, their second-lowest halftime production of the season. The lowest was 27 against these same Celtics on Christmas Day.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Phoenix point guard Steve Nash has played impressively with injuries all season, but a swollen eye with six stitches isn't your normal injury. A big part of what makes Nash so effective is his peripheral vision. He seems to have eyes in the back of his head with his ability to find the open man. But with one of the eyes in the front of his head not at 100 percent, how well will he be able to distribute the ball for the Suns?

      Game of the day

      Suns at Lakers (-6, 210.5)

      Notable quotable

"Any team that gets him along with Derrick Rose and (Joakim) Noah, you're going to have a good team. A lot depends on how much they have to give up to get him. If it's a sign and trade, what other moves they'd make, but I would not think they would be a championship-caliber team right away. But I think they'll be a top-3 or -4 team."

ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy about the Chicago Bulls' championship prospects if they sign LeBron James. Van Gundy is rumored to be a candidate for the Bulls' head coaching vacancy.

      Tips and notes

The Suns are making a defensive adjustment against the Lakers that should go a long way in deciding the series. After Jason Richardson was the primary defender against Kobe Bryant during the regular season, in which Bryant averaged 27.5 points per game on 54 percent shooting against Phoenix, the Suns instead are giving veteran Grant Hill a shot at slowing down Kobe. The Suns' strategy has worked in their earlier series, with Hill drawing tough assignments against San Antonio's Manu Ginobeli and Portland's Andre Miller and delivering the desired results.

Milwaukee pitcher Doug Davis' scratch on Sunday due to a heart condition puts a scare in the Brewers and also threw their starting rotation into frenzy. Davis was replaced in the rotation by Dave Bush, leaving Monday's starter against the red-hot Reds in question the night before the game. There's no help coming from the minors as the Brewers recalled outfielder Adam Stern from Triple-A Nashville to take Davis' spot in the roster.

If you're intrigued by the prop bets being taken on the LeBron James' free-agency sweepstakes, here's an item that could affect the odds. The New York Knicks are considering giving one of James' best friends a roster spot on their summer-league team in their pursuit of the free agent. Guard Dru Joyce III, a former high school teammate of James, could be brought in to help entice the Cleveland Cavaliers' two-time reigning MVP to New York.

        Monday's six-pack

Jamie Moyer gave up his 500th home run Friday night; here are some more tidbits about Moyer's lengthy big league career, courtesy of the excellent researchers at espn.com

-- Manny Ramirez (10) has hit the most HRs off of Moyer; 10 times Moyer gave up a homer to the game's first batter.

-- Moyer has three 2-hit shutouts; the last one was this month. First one was way back in 1986.

-- Alfonso Soriano (6-24-04) is only batter to hit a walk-off HR against Moyer.

-- Juan Samuel hit the first home run Moyer gave up.

-- No pitcher has hit a homer against Moyer; as we said yesterday, he has given up home runs in 40 different big league ballparks.

-- Moyer allowed Bonds' 11th career HR and Mike Schmidt's 471st.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

        13) When Detroit beat Red Sox on a walk-off walk Saturday night, guy who drew the game-winning walk, Ramon Santiago, didn't know he had to go touch first base in order for the run to count. Its funny how guys in the major leagues don't always know the rules.

        12) Bad news for TV ratings: Lookin for Lucky won't run in the Belmont Stakes, preventing a rematch of Kentucky Derby/Preakness winners.

        11) Dodger-Padres series this weekend drew 126,819 fans, the 6th-most fans to attend a weekend series at Petco Park.

        10) Anemic A's scored five runs in last five games; last time they were as impotent in a 5-game stretch was Sept 8-12, 1979; that team was going through the motions at end of a thoroughly depressing 54-108 season.

        9) Bob Uecker was once intentionally walked by Sandy Koufax; Uecker was 7-38 in his career vs the Hall of Fame lefty, but had two doubles and a home run, as well as three walks. The 75-year old Uecker showed up at Miller Park Friday and seems to be doing well following heart surgery.

        8) David Wright has now struck out at least once in 13 straight games.

        7) Phillies' manager Charlie Manuel hit 179 homers as a player over in the Japanese Leagues. Players seem to enjoy playing for him. Manuel hit .198 in 243 major league games, with the Twins and Dodgers.

        6) Barry Zito is 6-1, 2.15 and the Giants are a playoff contender.

        5) Tampa Bay is 26-11, despite Jason Bartlett hitting .236, Carlos Pena .180 and BJ Upton .225. Pretty soon, Evan Longoria is going to find out how Barry Bonds felt, unless Rays find a hitter to bat behind him.

        4) The underrated Dave Campbell was saying on ESPN radio Sunday nite how trainers nowadays want players to strengthen their core, but there are a lot of oblique injuries. Campbell, who played for Detroit/San Diego in the late 60's/70's, points out that players back then didn't have cores as strong as today's players, but no one had strained obliques, either.

        3) I've got an idea for a bar; call it The Garage, decorate it like any service station, and have female bartenders dressed like mechanics. Well, kind of like mechanics. Laugh if you want, but this would work.

        2) After six weeks of baseball, here are the playoff teams, if the playoffs started Monday morning, which of course, they don't.
        AL-- Tampa Bay-Minnesota-Texas-Bronx
        NL-- Philadelphia-Cincinnati-San Diego-San Francisco

        1) NBA Lottery is Tuesday at 8; all the losing teams send reps to sit in a room and see where they'll be picking in next month's draft. Best part of it is seeing who each team sends to the festivities. When was last time Clips sent someone other than Elgin Baylor or Mike Dunleavy?

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 210.5)

It’s the playoffs so that must mean that Andrew Bynum is injured. Every regular season Bynum makes mincemeat out of opposing big men but then the postseason rolls around and he’s nursing some nagging injury.

The Lakers did have their young center two years ago in the Finals against the Celtics and he never looked comfortable coming back off a knee injury last playoffs.

This year it’s his knee. Torn cartilage in his right one has kept Bynum from practicing this week.

“It’s sore,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s getting a little worse. But it hasn’t been affecting me, so I’m going to keep pushing hard.”

Bynum is the key for Los Angeles in this series against the Suns. The Lakers want to work the high-low post game and test Phoenix’s big fellas.

Bynum did next to nothing last series against the Jazz and if he says the knee is getting worse, he might look pretty awkward guarding Amare Stoudemire and Channing Frye.

              Pick: Suns

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Phoenix Suns at L.A. Lakers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 210.5)

Two streaking teams meet in the Western Conference finals. The Lakers are looking to repeat as NBA champions while the Suns haven’t been in the Finals since 1993. Both teams swept their last playoff series.

There is rest for the weary

While many teams complain about long layoffs in between playoff series, the Lakers hope to benefit from the extra time off.

The Lakers haven’t played in a week but the rest will surely be good for Kobe Bryant who has been nursing ankle, finger and knee injuries. Bryant hasn’t practiced all week and may not practice at all the rest of the postseason.

Sasha Vujacic said he’s ready to play after missing the first 10 games of the playoffs with a sprained ankle. Ron Artest and Shannon Brown also said they’re feeling better after suffering nagging injuries.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he may complain about the layoff after the game, depending on how well his team plays, but for the most part he’s happy about it.

                Series price

The Lakers are generally a 3-1 favorite to win the series checking in at -340 at some offshore points. The Lakers winning the series in five games is the shortest price of the game odds. You can get 30-1 if you think the Suns can sweep this one.

                An aerial attack

The series will be greatly impacted from long range. The Suns are the best 3-point shooting team in the NBA. The Lakers are the best at defending the 3-pointer.

These teams met four times in the regular season with the Lakers winning three of them. The game they lost, Phoenix hit a dozen 3-pointers.

By the numbers, Phoenix finished 28-4 when they shoot at least 45 percent from 3-point range, while the Lakers went 12-0 when they limited opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

                The X-factor

A lot of people think that the performance of Suns’ reserve Goran Dragic could be the difference-maker. That’s not the opinion here.

While Dragic had some scintillating moments against the Spurs (23 points in the fourth quarter of Game 4) it’s more likely that Grant Hill’s drive and desire will be the biggest factor.

Hill could erase a lot of disappointing moments in his NBA career with a big series here. He’s already shut down Andre Miller and Manu Ginobili and is sure to see a great deal of time shadowing Bryant.

Hill came back to Phoenix for this opportunity and it seems like it could very well be his last chance to get an NBA ring. At 37 years old, this is the first time that Hill has even won a playoff series and now he’s in the conference finals.

                Injury report

Andrew Bynum said that his injured knee gradually is getting worse but he plans to play through the pain and swelling. Bynum has a small tear in his meniscus. He practiced fully on Saturday.

“He’s running with some limitations,” Jackson said. “He still looks good. It’s good to see him out there.”

Let’s face it, the Lakers have a lot of tread on the tires so they’re supposed to have some injury problems. Bryant, Artest, Brown, Vujacic are also fighting injuries and Pau Gasol has a sinus infection. Jackson expects them all to play.

For the Suns, Steve Nash still has some lingering issues with his eye after being elbowed by Tim Duncan in the last series. He’ll play.

Suns starting center Robin Lopez is expected to play after missing the entire playoffs thus far and the final 10 games of the regular season with a bulging disk in his back.

                Trend-setting

The Lakers have won eight straight playoff games at home straight up.

The Suns are 5-0 ATS in their last five games as underdogs and own the same mark in their last five as road dogs.

The Suns are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games against teams with winning percentage above .600

The under is 7-1-1 in the Suns’ last nine road games but the under has cashed the last four times they’ve had layoffs of three or more days.

The Lakers have covered the spread five of their last six games.

In head-to-head matchups the Lakers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games.

The over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in L.A.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Chicago Cubs (-150, Off)

Cubs manager Lou Piniella knows to give his team a swift kick in the backside when they need it, and the Cubs have been begging for one all season.

They finally got it before Sunday's game against the Pirates when Piniella blew his top with the underachieving, overpaid Cubbies. They promptly went out and took a 4-3 win over the Bucs - a small victory, but a much-needed one.

"We keep talking about at-bats for people. We talk about people needing to play. We talk about everything but winning baseball games," Piniella ranted to the media. "That's what the hell I want to talk about ... period."

Too bad he had to waste his tirade on the Bucs, but the butt-chewing should spill over against the Rockies, who are 8-21 in their last 29 at Wrigley Field.

Piniella's rippings have a history of sticking with his players for a while. Don't be surprised if the Cubs make a little mini-run in May before the June swoon.

                  Pick: Cubs

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-200, 9.5)

The Yankees have added reinforcements to the relief staff for the Red Sox series by skipping Sunday's scheduled starter Javier Vazquez and sending him to the bullpen.

They might not need him Monday night, not the way starter Phil Hughes (5-0) has been throwing the ball lately. He is 3-0 in his last three outings with a miniscule 0.86 ERA.

That number includes a strong outing against the Red Sox last week when he scattered seven hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and only two walks and earned runs.

Hughes was previously 0-2 with a 8.28 ERA against the BoSox but seems to have turned a new leaf against the AL East rivals, as have the Bronx Bombers.

The Yankees are 13-3 in their last 16 vs. Boston. If they used to be the Red Sox's daddy, they are quickly becoming their granddaddy.

                  Pick: Yankees

                    This Day in Baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 17 in Baseball History...

1905 - Waseda University of Tokyo defeats Los Angeles High School 5-3 in the first game of an American tour. It is the first baseball game ever played by Japanese outside Japan. Waseda starts a powerhouse tradition at Japan's Big Six universities that continues today.

1915 - George "Zip" Zabel comes out of the Cubs bullpen with two outs in the first and winds up with a 4-3 19-inning win over Brooklyn in the longest relief job ever.

1925 - Washington lefty Tom Zachary throws the pitch that Tris Speaker socks for his 3,000th hit.

1939 - The first baseball game ever televised — Princeton against Columbia at Baker Field, Columbia's home field — is seen by a handful of viewers via W2XBS in New York City. Bill Stern announces Princeton's 2-1, ten inning win. Reviewing the game the next day, the New York Times sniffs, "it is difficult to see how this sort of thing can catch the public fancy."

1941 - The city of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania declare a legal holiday to honor the A's manager on Connie Mack Day at Shibe Park.

Twins shortstop Pat Meares flies out to Paul O'Neill in right field to complete the perfect afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
