    Daily Sports Roundup: May 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Preakness Stakes races at Pimlico, the Astros and Giants have their aces clash, and the WNBA gets their season going.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Minnesota at the Yankees, Texas at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at Baltimore, Boston at Detroit, Oakland at the Angels, and the White Sox at Kansas City. Jake Peavy (2-2, 5.56 ERA) will get the ball for Chicago in that last matchup against the Royals' Luke Hochevar (3-1, 5.65 ERA). Righthander Peavy picked up the win in each of his last two starts for the ChiSox, and he held the Royals scoreless on four hits over seven innings on May 3. Righthander Hochevar beat the White Sox in his May 4 outing, surrendering just one unearned run in his six innings pitched.

Over in the National League on Saturday it'll be Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Cincinnati, the Mets at Florida, Arizona at Atlanta, Washington at Colorado, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Houston at San Francisco. The Astros will send ace Roy Oswalt (2-4, 2.63 ERA) to the mound on Saturday to take on Giants ace Tim Lincecum (4-0, 1.86 ERA). Righthander Oswalt had to settle for a no-decision in his last trip to the mound despite holding the Padres to three earned runs in eight innings of work. Righthander Lincecum has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his seven outings this season.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The second jewel of the Triple Crown takes place at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday afternoon with a 12-horse field in the 2010 Preakness Stakes. Super Saver, the Kentucky Derby champion, is pegged as the 13/5 sportsbook favorite to win on Saturday, with Looking at Lucky (3/1), and Paddy O'Prado (6/1) following him on the odds list. Dublin is next at 10/1 odds, followed by Jackson Bend at 11/1, and both Caracortado and Schoolyard Dreams at 12/1. Both First Dude and Pleasant Prince sit at 20/1 odds to claim the Preakness Stakes, with Aikenite and Yawanna Twist at 25/1, and Northern Giant the big longshot at 28/1.

Finally, there are five games on the WNBA hardwood on Saturday as the league gets its regular season started: Los Angeles at Phoenix, Chicago at Connecticut, Washington at Indiana, Atlanta at San Antonio, and Minnesota at Tulsa. The Tulsa Shock will be playing the first game in franchise history on Saturday; they relocated from Detroit in the offseason. Former Olympic sprinter Marion Jones is part of Tulsa's roster this year; the guard played NCAA hoops for North Carolina.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

The total in the Pirates-Cubs game is OTB because the wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field is unknown.

Lines to keep an eye on

Twins at Yankees – Opening total of 9 has dropped to 8.5.

Pirates at Cubs – The home team surfaced as -200 favorites but that moneyline has jumped to -215 in some markets.

Rangers at Blue Jays – Toronto opened as -131 chalk but that number can be found as high as -153 now. The Jays are 3-0 in Ricky Romero’s last three starts.

Astros at Giants – The home team opened as -200 favorites but that moneyline has elevated to -230 on some boards.

Diamondbacks at Braves – The OVER saw early action in this matchup as the total has been bet up a half run to 8.5.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

White Sox at Royals – A 50 percent chance of rain is called for with wind blowing in from right field at 12 mph.

Nationals at Rockies – A 50 percent chance of rain is in the forecast. These teams only played 8.0 innings Thursday due to rain which cancelled most runline and total wagers for the game.

Diamondbacks at Braves – A 30 percent chance of rain is called for.

The second round the Valero Texas Open was been suspended Friday due to heavy rain, lightning and tornado warnings. The second round will start Saturday at 7:10 a.m. Matt Jones is the leader after the first round at -6. Damp green conditions usually equate to lower scores because players can fire directly at the pin and get balls to stop on a dime.

      Who’s hot

Cincinnati had won five straight and 7-of-10 heading into Friday’s action.

The Dodgers were riding a four-game winning streak (7-3 L10) going into Friday.

      Who’s not

The Diamondbacks had dropped six games in a row and seven of their last 10 as of May 14.

Seattle is 2-8 since May 2.

      Key stat

16-50 – Twins record against the Yankees under manager Ron Gardenhire.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Rockies placed interim closer Franklin Morales on the 15-day disabled list. Huston Street is expected to return to the team in a week so it looks as if Manny Corpas will take over closing duties until then. Corpas has a 3.09 ERA this season and has fanned 17 hitters in 23.1 innings of work.

      Race of the day

135th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course

      Notable quotable

"Eight is perfect. It will give Calvin [Borel] an opportunity to survey things. He'll be able to see who's doing what. He's tactical enough that I think he's probably going to land in the first tier. We're not committed to anything. We're just going to let our horse run his race."

-- Super Saver trainer Todd Pletcher said after his horse drew the No. 8 starting position in the Preakness Stakes.

      Tips and notes

      - Padres’ starting pitcher Kevin Correira lost his 22-year-old brother in a hiking accident last week. Manager Bud Black said he doesn’t know “how this is going to sort out.” A death can affect people in many different ways – Correira could be inspired during his Saturday start or have his mind elsewhere. There is also the fact that Correira hasn’t pitched in almost two weeks so he could be a little rusty after being away from baseball.

      - It sounds like veteran Astros Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt want to play for a contender. Within a span of three weeks, both players have told Houston management that they would be willing to waive their no-trade clauses if the team wants to deal them. Bettors looking to back the ‘Stros should be concerned that two of the team’s best players might be a disinterested in winning after a rough start to the season. Oswalt has a tough matchup against Tim Lincecum on Saturday.

      - Kansas City fired manager Trey Hillman Friday and replaced him with Ned Yost. What does this mean to a bettor? Well, the team could have new life playing under a new skipper or the clubhouse could be upset/divided over the firing and suffer a setback. When Yost was with Milwaukee, he was known for creating a good atmosphere for young players. Some pundits have questioned whether the K.C. veterans will respect him however. Yost did a poor job of managing the Brewers bullpen in 2007 so keep an eye on the Royals relievers.

NBA Western Conference final series odds and pick
        By ASHTON GREWAL

Los Angeles Lakers (-335) vs. Phoenix Suns (+293)

There’s no question who the sentimental favorite is in this one. There aren’t two more likeable guys in the league than Steve Nash and Grant Hill and you’ve got to figure that this is the last chance either will get at a championship ring.

But for Nash and Hill to get a shot to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy, they’ll have to get by the defending champs.

What the Suns have going for them

I picked the Spurs to win last round but I think I underestimated the best thing the Suns’ biggest asset: chemistry. Nash has played on some ridiculously talented teams but he’s said repeatedly said that this is the best group of guys he’s played with.

The Suns are also oozing with confidence after sweeping the Spurs. It proved to all the critics that Phoenix is not the same cute, but one-dimensional squad.

What the Lakers have going for them

Kobe Bryant. The Lakers’ superstar had his way with the Jazz and has scored 30 or more points in five straight playoff games. The Suns don’t matchup well against the Lakers – particularly with Kobe.

Phoenix will probably put Hill and Jared Dudley on No. 24 for most of the series, but there’ll be times when Jason Richardson will have to guard Bryant and that’s a scary scenario for Los Suns backers.

And don’t forget the Lakers have owned the Suns in recent years, winning and covering in six of their last eight meetings.

        X-factors

Suns: Channing Frye is the best weapon the Suns have against the Lakers’ starting big man duo. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum won’t be able to eat up Amare Stoudemire’s space in the paint if Frye is locked in from beyond the arc.

Lakers: Phoenix will only go as far as Nash will take them and it'll be up to Derek Fisher to limit the one-eyed monster. That’s no small feat for a player who has trouble staying in front of some of the lower-tier point guards. But Fish is smart and knows how to get underneath an opponent’s skin.

        Prediction

Like I said, it’d be a great story if Phoenix won. It would undo some of the past hard luck the Suns have been dealt in the postseason. Unfortunately, the best story rarely pans out in the Association. The Lakers are a far superior team and they’ll prove it early.

        Pick: Lakers in five

NBA Eastern Conference finals preview and pick
        By LARRY JOSEPHSON

Orlando Magic (-275) vs. Boston Celtics (+244)

Anybody mind if we interrupt the constant yammering about LeBron James and his impending free agency to remind everyone that the world hasn’t ended and that we will actually have an Eastern Conference championship series and that it actually will start in a few days and that the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics are actually pretty good?

The Magic no doubt are as stunned as anybody else outside the 02114 area code that they’ll be taking on the Celtics, starting Sunday, in the East finals. The teams met in the second round a year ago when the Magic bested the C’s in a seven-game series on their way to The Finals. And while many of the same characters have remained the same, there are also significant differences.

How the Magic have remained the same

Orlando is still an inside-out team that can beat you by 25 if its outside shots are dropping and lose to a mediocre opponent if they aren’t. Last season the Magic took advantage of the absence of injured Kevin Garnett, sent Rashard Lewis to the corner and chuckled as Glen Davis, more comfortable in the paint defensively, struggled to close on him.

Lewis was Orlando’s most consistent offensive player, raining 3-pointers on the Celtics for seven games. He averaged 20.5 points a game in the series, scoring no fewer than 17 in any game.

Dwight Howard remains every bit the defensive force he was last season but appears to be whining less about not getting the ball enough on the offensive end.

        How the Magic have changed

So far so good on the Vince Carter deal. With Jameer Nelson, who missed the Celtics series last year due to injury, back at full speed and Carter on board, the backcourt gives the Celtics different concerns this time around. Both players can go off at any time – the inconsistent play of Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Hedo Turkoglu actually allowed the Celtics to keep the series alive last season.

Orlando won’t have an advantage over Celtics starters Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen, but they won’t be as overmatched as Cleveland backcourt was. Matt Barnes has been a nice addition and has wormed his way into the rotation.

How the Celtics have remained the same

Dwight Howard has called Kendrick Perkins the best low-post defender in the league, and if Perkins can stay out of foul trouble (no easy feat), it make life much easier on the Boston front line. Orlando likes to get Howard the ball early and often in the first period, and that won’t change.

The Celtics were somehow able to get past Cleveland despite a subpar performance from Paul Pierce, but that was partly because Rondo’s emergence. Allen’s 3-point shooting has been streaky – if he’s on, the defense is stretched, opening up things for Pierce to slash.

        How the Celtics have changed

Magic fans might not recognize Garnett, who was hobbling around the last time the teams played in Orlando. Lewis drove by an immobile Garnett for the winning hoop way back on Jan. 28, but Garnett’s knee is greatly improved. Last season Lewis abused Davis, but a rejuvenated Garnett is able close on Lewis’ perimeter game faster than Davis could.

And then there is the matter of Rondo, who will most likely be a constant visitor in Mike Brown’s dreams for the next two or three decades. If Rondo is a reasonable duplicate of the player who dominated Cleveland’s backcourt, Nelson is in for an interesting next couple of weeks.

        The overall matchup

Any team that wins eight consecutive playoff games, like Orlando has done in swatting away the Bobcats and the Hawks by an average winning margin of 17.5 points, should be oozing with confidence. And the Magic certainly don’t lack swagger.

But if the Magic think that the Celtics are going to wet their pants the way the Hawks did against Orlando, well, it just ain’t going to happen.

Boston was one of the best road teams in the league (better on the road than at home, actually) and the Celtics’ starting five has never lost a playoff series. Boston’s veterans, who struggled all season when they appeared worn out by travel, nagging injuries and back-to-back sets, appear energized again as they take advantage of days off between games and longer TV time-outs.

        Look hard at the under

Five of the seven games in the Eastern semis last season went under, and low over/under totals are expected again this season, perhaps in the 187-188 range for Games 1 and 2. Miami and Cleveland both attacked the Celtics the same way, slowly down the ball and insuring that their superstars (James and Dwyane Wade) had the ball in their hands on every offensive set, hoping to force the Celtics defense to work for large portions of the 24-second clock.

Working in favor of the under is the increased playing time given to Boston defender Tony Allen. When he’s on the court, games can resemble an Ohio State football game from the 1980s.

        Prediction

Assuming it goes 7, this series will be played out over 15 days, with the only 3-day break coming between Games 2 and 3 as the series shifts to Boston.

Rashard Lewis, who as mentioned earlier was the x-factor in last year’s series, is not playing great basketball. If he isn’t knocking down corner 3-balls, then KG can cheat down low in the paint.

Liking a slow start in Game 1 for Boston, then agita for Stan Van Gundy from that point on as Boston wins in 7.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (-130, 9)

The Twinkies are tired of being eaten alive by the Yankees.

Minnesota went 0-10 against New York in 2009, which included a three-game sweep during the ALDS. The Twins brass added veterans like Orlando Hudson and Jim Thome this offseason in order to contend with the Yankees in the postseason.

"You know they are going to be there come October," Denard Span said. "These games in the regular season do mean something. It's just setting the tone for October. We plan on being there, and I know they plan on being there."

Under the tutelage of Ron Gardenhire, the Twins are just 15-60 versus the Yanks and 3-23 in New York.

"Obviously we haven't had success there and we know that we haven't," Justin Morneau said. "It's not something that goes into our head. We know it's a new year and it starts over when we go in there. We're a different team. We have a lot of new guys."

With more than just another regular season win on the line for Minnesota look for the visitors to escape with a win in this afternoon affair. Also, Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettitte hasn’t pitched in 10 days and could be a bit rusty.

          Pick: Twins

Arizona Diamondbacks at Atlanta Braves (-210, 8.5)

After an offensive awakening in Milwaukee, the Braves hitters might be finding their stride.

Going into that three-game set against the Brew Crew, Atlanta had hit .215 with three home runs and 33 runs scored in its previous 13 road games. In the series, the Braves pounded out 28 runs, five home runs and hit .307. All three games went over the posted total.

"I think we're starting to turn the corner," Braves GM Frank Wren said. "I don't think we're where we want to be yet, but I think getting more key guys back in the lineup will give us a better indication of what kind of offense we believe we have."

Atlanta’s offense has been hampered by early injuries to Chipper Jones, Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar. Those three hitters have combined for 27 RBIs this season – one fewer than rookie Jason Heyward.

Heyward was moved to the No. 3 spot in the batting order with Jones out the second two games in Milwaukee. Heyward got on base during seven of his 11 plate appearances in those games and the Braves scored 20 runs. He was moved up to the two-hole Friday.

With guys getting healthy for Bobby Cox’s club and hitters like Troy Glaus and Brooks Conrad contributing, expect Hotlanta’s bats to keep heating up.

          Pick: Over

            This Day in Baseball
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 15 in Baseball History...

1894 - In the aftermath of a fierce fight between Baltimore's John McGraw and Boston's Tommy Tucker in the third inning, a devastating fire starts in the right field stands at Boston's South End Grounds. The fire destroys $70,000 worth of equipment as well as the park, the only truly double-decked grandstand Boston would ever have.

1912 - Ty Cobb charges into the stands in New York and attacks heckler Claude Lueker. Other fans and Tigers mix it up. A.L. president Ban Johnson suspends Cobb indefinitely.

1922 - In a game at New York, Ty Cobb beats out a grounder to shortstop Everett Scott. Veteran writer Fred Lieb scores it a hit in the box score he files with the Associated Press. But official scorer John Kieran of the Times gives an error to Scott. At the season's end, the A.L. official records, based on AP box scores, list Cobb at .401. New York writers complain unsuccessfully that it should be .399, based on the official scorer's stats.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio gets a single against Eddie Smith of the Chicago White Sox to start his 56-game hitting streak. Joe D's hit goes unnoticed as the Yankees lose 13-1.

1960 - Two days after being traded from the Phillies to the Cubs, Don Cardwell pitches a no-hitter. Two brilliant defensive plays — a leaping catch of Carl Sawatski's drive by right fielder George Altman in the eighth inning and Walt Moryn's game-ending sliding grab — save Cardwell's gem. Ernie Banks' home run paces the 4-0 win, the first no-hitter against the Cards since May 11, 1919.

1968 - The first A.L. game played in Milwaukee since 1901 is a 4-2 California win against Chicago before 23,403 fans. This is the first of the nine games the White Sox will play in Milwaukee in 1968.

1973 - California's Nolan Ryan strikes out 12 and hurls his first career no-hitter in beating Kansas City 3-0. For catcher Jeff Torborg, it is his third no-hitter.

1981 - Len Barker pitches the ninth perfect game in the 20th century. The Indians righthander hurls the 3-0 perfecto over the Blue Jays before just 7,290 fans on a rainy night in Cleveland. Barker, the 1980 strikeout leader in the A.L., fans 11 Jays.

1989 - The Blue Jays fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him with hitting coach Cito Gaston. Williams led the club to a 12-24 start and had several publicized run-ins with star slugger George Bell, who refused to be the club's designated hitter.

1991 - The Red Sox and White Sox play the slowest nine-inning game to date in major league history (four hours, 11 minutes), but Boston rallies from a 5-0 deficit for a 9-6 win.

1998 - A blockbuster trade involves seven players whose guaranteed contracts combine for a record $98 million. The Dodgers get Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, and Jim Eisenreich and send Mike Piazza and Todd Zeile to the Marlins. With the trade, Florida has officially purged itself of a dozen costly and quality players from the team that won the World Series seven months earlier. Piazza, a superstar in Los Angeles, had turned down a six-year, $80-million offer to stay with the Dodgers.

                          Saturday's six-pack

-- In his last five starts, totalling 21.1 IP, Oliver Perez has put 49 men on base, with 19 of them scoring. Time to sit Ollie down.

-- Only six of the thirty closers pitched Friday night.

-- Harden/Cecil, starting Ps in Texas-Toronto game, faced 34 batters on Friday night; 20 reached base- 15 of them scored.

-- Mark Buehrle threw 86 pitches Friday night; didn't get a strikeout or a walk and not one swing/miss, which has to be alarming.

-- Ned Yost won his managerial debut in Kansas City, as Gil Meche won his first game of the year, 6-1 over Buehrle's White Sox.

-- Matt Kemp homered over CF wall, giving Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Padres at a sold-out Petco Park.

Saturday's List of 13: Ranking the National League teams........

                          16) Pirates-- Bucs were outscored 39-7 in Duke's last five starts; he was the Opening Day starter. They've been shut out in their last two games.

                          15) Diamondbacks-- Why did they fire Bob Melvin last year? Bullpen had a 7.09 ERA thru 33 games; worst bullpen ERA in last 40 years was the 6.16 disaster Tampa Bay put up three years ago. Yikes.

                          14) Astros-- 13-13 since their 0-8 start; they're 6-6 on road, 7-15 at home but have won last four games. They've got a good manager, but starting pitching isn't good. Will they sell off Oswalt and Berkman?

                          13) Cubs-- They've lost seven of last ten games; Zambrano is 1-2, 6.33- he's been so bad they put him in bullpen. Gorzelanny has a 2.83 RA and is 1-4. Its been so strange; Carlos Silva has been their best pitcher so far.

                          12) Brewers-- Not sure why they paid Gallardo (4-2, 3.06) but Sabathia they let walk; Doug Davis (1-4, 7.56) was terrible free agent signing, and closer Hoffman has ERA of 12.00, blowing four saves already. Other than that, its been a good season in Beertown.

                          11) Rockies-- Jimenez is 6-1, 0.93; he is an elite pitcher; Chacin's start on Thursday gets a mulligan, since game was played in steady rain-- he threw 14.1 scoreless innings in first two starts. Closer Street is on way back to a team that has been disappointing to this point.

                          10) Braves-- Kawakami/Lowe both have 5.73 ERAs; Kawakami is 0-6, Lowe is 5-3. Go figure. Hudson (3-1, 2.64) is healthy again. Heyward has already clinched Rookie of Year award (.301, 8 HRs, 28 RBI). Chipper is on the way out though; he just can't stay healthy.

                          9) Dodgers-- Padilla was Opening Day starter and Russ Ortiz gets nod to pitch tonight, thats how fouled up they are. Ortiz is 5-18 in big leagues since 2005; he was 99-56 from 1999-2004. Ethier (.385, 11 HR, 37 RBI) has become of the game's best hitters.

                          8) Mets-- Next week on CSI, a deranged fantasy league owner kidnaps the Mets' manager and won't release him until he writes Jose Reyes' name in the leadoff spot on every lineup card in his office. Did I mention who the shortstop on my fantasy league team is? Uh, forget I said anything.

                          7) Marlins-- Next big thing after Washington brings up Strasburg will be when the Marlins promote 20-year old Mike Stanton (15 HRs, .333 in AA). Will be interesting to see if wacky owner Loria spends money once his new stadium in Little Cuba gets built. He'll be out of excuses not to.

                          6) Reds-- Homer Bailey had a 90-pitch, complete game gem against Bucs Wednesday, where he threw 17 balls, 73 strikes; too bad it was his first win in seven starts. Arizona State rookie Leake skipped minor leagues and has been quite a find on the hill for Dusty Baker.

                          5) Cardinals-- The new hitting instructor is presiding over an offense that has lost its power, with three HRs in 415 ABs this month. The combined HR total of Rasmus-Pujols-Holliday-Ludwich this month? Zero.

                          4) Nationals-- Reliever Storen will probably get to bigs before Strasburg, who figures to start in Washington June 8, meaning he has four starts left in AAA. How did they swindle Pirates into giving them Nyjer Morgan? He's a good fielder and seems like a team leader.

                          3) Giants-- Excellent pitching, lame hitting- they scored four runs in last three games. They signed oft-injured Freddy Sanchez to 2-year deal, but they're still waiting for him to finish his rehab assignment. Prize prospect Posey is pounding ball in AAA, but doesn't have position in majors with Molina still entreched behind the plate.

                          2) Phillies-- Last team to win National League three years in row was the Cardinals, from 1942-44. Breakdown of Roy Halladay's strikes per game: 19.9 foul balls a game, 21.3 called strikes, 11.3 swings/misses, and 23.3 balls in play, with a batting average of .324 on those balls in play.

                          1) Padres-- Threw eight shutouts in first 34 games. Condolences to Kevin Correia's family; his 22-year old brother died in hiking accident last week. Correia is expected to make his next start this weekend. Hopefully Petco crowds will be big this weekend with hated Dodgers in town.
