    Daily Sports Roundup: May 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Twins hit the field at Yankee Stadium, the Rockies host the Nationals, and the Flyers and Bruins play Game 7 in Boston.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday has Cleveland at Baltimore, Boston at Detroit, Texas at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at Kansas City, Oakland at the Angels, and Minnesota at the Yankees. Scott Baker (4-2, 4.57 ERA) will get the ball for the Twins in that last matchup, while A.J. Burnett (4-1, 3.40 ERA) will take to the mound for New York. Righthander Baker defeated the Orioles in his last trip to the mound, giving up just one run on three hits over his eight innings of work in that contest. Righthander Burnett was rocked in his most recent start, allowing nine runs on nine hits in 4 1-3 innings against the Red Sox.

Over in the National League on Friday it'll be Pittsburgh at the Cubs, the Mets at Florida, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Arizona at Atlanta, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at San Diego, Houston at San Francisco, and Washington at Colorado. The Nationals will start Livan Hernandez (4-1, 1.04 ERA) on Friday against the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez (6-1, 0.93 ERA). Righthander Hernandez has given up two or fewer runs in each of his six outings so far this season, but he was beaten by the Rockies on April 22 (two runs over eight innings). Righthander Jimenez got the win in that contest, blanking the Nationals on five hits over 7 1-3 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the NHL offers up one game on Friday night, with Philadelphia at Boston in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Flyers completed the comeback from an 0-3 series deficit by edging the Bruins 2-1 in Philadelphia in Game 6 on Wednesday night. Mike Richards and Danny Briere had the goals for the Flyers in that loss, while Michael Leighton stopped 30 of 31 Boston shots. Milan Lucic had the lone goal for the Bruins with just one minute left in regulation time, and Tuukka Rask stopped 25 of the 27 Philly shots in Wednesday's defeat.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

The total in the Pirates-Cubs game is off pending wind direction and speed.

Lines to keep an eye on

Rockies opened at -215 over the Nationals but have moved to -250 at most books. Nationals are 3-11 in last 14 at Coors Field.

Indians-Orioles total was released at 8.5 and has climbed to 9 at some books. Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

      Weather to watch

Pirates-Cubs forecast calls for winds blowing out to right at 23 mph.

Indians-Orioles game faces a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Twins-Yankees forecast calls for 40 percent chance of showers.

Cardinals-Reds game faces a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Nationals-Rockies forecast calls for 40 percent chance of rain.

      Who's hot

Bruins are 7-1 in their last eight at home.

Reds have won five in a row.

      Who's not

Flyers are 5-12 in their last 17 on road.

Diamondbacks have lost six in a row.

      Key stat

+105 / -6: The combined goal differential for the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins during the regular season and the goal differential for the Montreal Canadiens, team that knocked both of them out of the playoffs.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Bruins had hoped to give defenseman Adam McQuaid the rest of the series off to recover from a leg injury, but that was back when they had a 3-0 lead over the Flyers. It's no longer a luxury in tonight's Game 7 and McQuaid will try to go full speed after returning to the practice ice for the first time Tuesday. If he is effective, McQuaid may be just the extra lift the Bruins need to get over this hump. If not, he could help the Flyers make history.

      Game of the day

      Flyers at Bruins (-120, 5)

      Notable quotable

"I'm going to look at this thing as I'm the man, like I've always been. And that's never going to change."

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams on the possibility of him losing his starting job to first-round draft pick Dez Bryant. Williams caught only 38 passes for 596 yards last season, dropping eight passes to his seven touchdown catches.

      Tips and notes

Both the Rays and Mariners had to make a coast-to-coast flight before tonight's meeting in Tampa, but the Rays had 24 more hours to complete the trip. The Rays had a day off Thursday to recover from their West Coast road swing, winning their last two against the Angels, while the Mariners had to fly from Seattle to Tampa, the longest distance between two major-league teams, immediately after their loss to the Orioles on Thursday.

It only makes sense that this weekend's NASCAR stop at the Monster Mile would be won by the driver of the M&M car, but this hunch is more about numbers than letters. Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch was the fastest in both Thursday test sessions at Dover, where he became the youngest driver to win on the track two years ago at the age of 23. He is competing in all three events this weekend and the extra time on the tricky track could pay off on Sunday, if not sooner.

The morning-line favorite for Friday's Black-Eyed Susan Stakes didn't have the smoothest trip to Pimlico Downs. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas was hauling five horses in two vans to Maryland on Tuesday when one broke down at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania. Told it would be six to eight hours for a replacement van, Lukas reconfigured the hauler right in the Mickey D's parking lot, further prolonging the trecherous ride to Pimlico.

        Friday's six-pack

-- San Diego Padres are 22-12, have already thrown eight shutouts. Mat Latos threw a one-hitter at Giants Thursday, knocking in the only run.

-- Jayson Werth has 18 doubles this season. Thats a lot.

-- Want to win a bar bet? The only hit Stephen Strasburg has allowed in two starts at AAA level? Gregor Blanco.

-- Former Cowboy lineman Leon Lett is now defensive line coach down at Louisiana-Monroe in the Sun Belt Conference.

-- You can buy the ballfield in Iowa where they filmed Field of Dreams for a mere $5.4M. Thats a lot of corn.

-- If this is truly the end of the Lebron James era in Cleveland, what a depressing way for it to end. They had no bounce in this series. Even if he comes back, the team has a lot of doubts to dispel next season.
