    Daily Sports Roundup: May 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins host the Canadiens, the Flyers meet the Bruins, and the Padres play on the road against the rival Giants.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has the White Sox at Minnesota, Toronto at Boston, Seattle at Baltimore, Oakland at Texas, Cleveland at Kansas City, the Yankees at Detroit (in a doubleheader), and Tampa Bay at the Angels. David Price (4-1, 1.91 ERA) will take on Jered Weaver (4-1, 2.66 ERA) in that Rays/Angels matchup. Lefthander Price rolled to a win over the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, giving up just one unearned run on three hits over 7 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Weaver is also coming off a strong outing, as he held the Mariners scoreless on two hits over 7 1-3 innings in his last trip to the mound.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, Atlanta at Milwaukee, Florida at the Cubs, Philadelphia at Colorado, Houston at St. Louis, the Dodgers at Arizona, and San Diego at San Francisco. The Padres will send Clayton Richard (1-2, 3.34 ERA) to the mound to take on Matt Cain (2-1, 2.79 ERA) in that last contest. Lefthander Richard took a no-decision against the Giants back on April 19, giving up one run over his 6 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Cain also took a no-decision in that April 19 matchup, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits in his six innings pitched.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are two NHL playoff games on the schedule for Wednesday, with Montreal at Pittsburgh and Boston at Philadelphia. The Canadiens forced a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series with a 4-3 home win in Game 6 on Monday night. Michael Cammalleri scored twice for Montreal in that win, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 34 of 37 Pittsburgh shots. Sidney Crosby had his sixth goal of the playoff for the Pens. The Flyers also staved off elimination on Monday, winning Game 5 in Boston 4-0 to cut the series deficit to 3-2. Simon Gagne had a pair of goals in that victory for Philadelphia, and starting netminder Brian Boucher left the contest with a knee injury; Michael Leighton replaced him.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers – Rain forced Tuesday’s matchup to be postponed and the teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday. Starting pitchers for Game 1 have yet to be announced.

The total in the Marlins-Cubs game is OTB because the wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field is unknown.

Lines to keep an eye on

White Sox at Twins – Opening total of 8.5 has been bet down to 8.

Nationals at Mets – Opening total of 8 has been bet up to 8.5.

Rays at Angels – Opening total of 8.5 has dropped to 8.

      Weather to watch
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Phillies at Rockies – A temperature of 38 degrees will greet these teams at Coors Field with a 60 percent chance of rain and snow.

Nationals at Mets – Field conditions could be sloppy at Citi Field as there is a 40 percent chance of rain in the A.M.

Marlins at Cubs – A 40 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

Mariners at Orioles – The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain.

Blue Jays at Red Sox – A 70 percent chance of rain is in the forecast.

Indians at Royals – Wind blowing out to right field at 15 mph, 50 percent chance of precipitation.

Astros at Cardinals – Wind will blow in from center field at 14 mph and there is an 80 percent chance of rain.

      Who’s hot

The Reds were riding a three-game winning streak going into Tuesday.

Nineteen of Montreal’s last 23 wins came as an underdog.

Texas had won four straight games and was 8-2 in its last 10 as of Tuesday.

      Who’s not

The D-Backs are losers of four consecutive games and 7-of-10.

Philadelphia has converted one power-play opportunity in its last 19 attempts.

With the worst offense in baseball, Houston was 2-8 over its last 10 games heading into Tuesday.

      Key stat

12 – Number of home runs the Seattle Mariners have hit in 1,022 at-bats this season. Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko has 13 homers in 99 trips to the plate in 2010.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brewers slugger Ryan Braun was drilled by a fastball to the left elbow Monday and was not in the team’s lineup Tuesday night. The pitch was humming at 92 mph but Braun stayed in the game after being hit. It was only when the Braves were up 7-0 did Braun exit the game after six innings. Milwaukee’s best player is hitting .359 with six homers and 28 RBIs in 32 games this season. Jody Gerut replaced Braun in the field Monday.

      Game of the Day

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-260, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

"We will support and fight and take a bullet for Ken Griffey Jr. if we have to. Nothing is going to divide this clubhouse, especially a makeshift article made up of lies. We don't think there are two players who said that (about Griffey sleeping). I challenged everyone in that room -- if they said that -- to stand up and fight me. No one stood up.”

-- Mariners designated hitter Mike Sweeney said of the article that reported Griffey was caught sleeping in the clubhouse during a game and missed a pinch-hit opportunity because of the nap.

      Tips and notes

      - Steer clear of the Mariners for now. Monday, two players accused Ken Griffey Jr. of sleeping during a game and if teammates are ratting out others to the media there is no chemistry in this clubhouse. And the team also lacks leadership because if these younger players respected Griffey they wouldn’t have said what they did. Seattle fired its hitting coach Sunday and held a team meeting Tuesday. In that meeting Mike Sweeney challenged any of his teammates to a fight. And let’s not even go into the Milton Bradley saga. Mariners = Poison.

      - Mets third baseman David Wright is struggling this season. ESPN analyst Buster Olney contends Wright is “not comfortable at the plate” and “is flinching at breaking pitches.” He went on to say that this tendency started after Wright was drilled in the head by Matt Cain last summer, so he’s gun-shy. Prior to that beaning, Wright had a .324 average in 426 at-bats but since being hit he has posted a .253 average in 217 ABs. Unders in total base props for Wright have been cashing like crazy.

      - Derek Holland will make his first start this season after being called up from Triple-A to replace Matt Harrison in the Rangers rotation. The lefty had a 0.93 ERA in six starts in the minors but was 6-12 with a 6.23 ERA in 21 starts last season in the big leagues. Holland gave up five earned runs in his only start against the A’s last season. The over for this game is set at 9 and Holland is a -125 favorite.

What bettors need to know: Canadiens at Penguins
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-260, 5.5)

        Series tied at 3-3.

        Who’s the biggest threat?

Heading into this Eastern Conference semifinal, all the attention was on Penguins' superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and how the Canadiens planned to stop them.

Perhaps the media should have focused on Montreal forward Mike Cammalleri and how Pittsburgh would handle the diminutive center. Cammalleri is a one-man wrecking crew this postseason, putting up 16 points (11 goals, five assists) – six of those goals coming against the Penguins. To put his contributions into perspective: Montreal has only scored 14 goals this series.

Cammalleri added to his goal total with a pair of scores in Monday’s 4-3 win in Game 6, tying the series at 3-3 and sending the conference semifinal back to the Steel City for Game 7 Wednesday night. He opened scoring just over a minute into the contest then added another goal mid way through the second period.

"It feels good," Cammalleri told the media. "I try to sit and dwell on things like that, but we need goals to win right now. Nothing really matters up until now. Now all that matters is how you prepare for Game 7. It is great, but none of it really matters right now."

This will be the Habs’ second Game 7 showdown of the playoffs. They eliminated the No. 1 ranked Washington Capitals with a 2-1 victory in Game 7 in the first round.

        Sidney sighting

After going nearly unnoticed in the first five games of the series, Crosby finally showed up on the score sheet in Game 6 Monday.

He netted a first-period gem and added an assist on Kristopher Letang’s power-play goal in the second period to up his point total to a measly five points in six games against Montreal. Crosby came into the second round of the playoffs on fire, putting up 14 points (five goals, nine assists) versus the Ottawa Senators in the conference quarterfinals.

"It was nice to see one go in," Crosby told the Toronto Sun after Game 6. "You work hard to get chances, so yeah, for sure, it always feels good to score."

Crosby isn’t just missing chances or getting stumped by red-hot Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak. Montreal has done an incredible job keeping an eye on the Penguins captain, limiting him to just 12 shots on goal for the series. He has been held to one shot in four of the six games versus the Canadiens.

"That wasn't something that I kept thinking about," Crosby told reporters when asked about his scoring slump. "I just wanted to generate more and more (chances)."

Crosby’s partner in crime, Malkin, has also been a no-show for most of the conference semis. The hulking forward has just one goal and two assists with a minus-2 plus/minus rating. Malkin picked up eight points in the six games against the Senators.

"I think everybody's playing well," Letang told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in defense of his teammates.

"We all look at statistics and numbers. I think in the playoffs that's not a good way (to judge players). You should look at the work they do on the ice, the space they create for us. I think they've been playing well."

        Offensive defense

Whether or not the finger should be pointing at the Pittsburgh blueline or goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, something needs to happen to the Penguins defense between now and the end of Game 7 Wednesday.

Pittsburgh gave up four goals on just 25 shots Monday night, including watching the Habs score on their very first shot of the game. Montreal’s frontline did a great job of crowding Fleury’s crease while the Pittsburgh defense appeared to screen their own goaltender at times. The Pens blueline was careless with the puck and paid for its sloppy play.

"If you look at all four of their goals, it was our turnovers [that caused them]," defenseman Brooks Orpik told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It wasn't them creating much in our zone. It was us not managing the puck well. We turned the puck over four times, and they scored four times."

Fleury has been inconsistent over the course of the second round. He put up stellar performances in Games 3 and 5 but has allowed three or more goals in the four other contests. He’s been in the shadow of counterpart Jaroslav Halak, who has put Montreal on his back in the playoffs.

Fleury is facing an average of 25.5 shots per game in the second round while Halak is being peppered with almost 31 shots a night versus the Penguins, boasting a 2.45 goals against average and a .922 save percentage in the conference semifinals.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-260, 5.5)

The Montreal Canadiens got a huge lift from the crowd in a must-win Game 6 at the Bell Centre Monday night. The 21,000 screaming fans stood and waved towels throughout the game, including for an entire commercial break, and were rewarded with a 4-3 Canadiens victory, forcing a Game 7 at Mellon Arena.

“When it gets loud, you can’t hear your teammates out there, but you’ve got to keep your composure,” Penguins forward Craig Adams told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Those are the momentum swings that happen in every game.”

But even more problematic for the Pens has been the impressive performance of diminutive Habs forward Michael Cammalleri, who notched his 10th and 11th goals of the playoffs Monday night. After going scoreless in the last nine games of the regular season, Cammalleri found his stride at exactly the right time.

“I guess I saved some for the playoffs”, Cammalleri told the Canadian Press. “When (the puck) is going in, everything goes in, and when it doesn’t, nothing does. That’s how it goes for goal-scorers.”

Sidney Crosby may have ended his four-year scoring drought in Montreal by netting Pittsburgh’s first goal of the night, but the Penguins’ young star has been well contained by the Habs in this series. Crosby even showed some signs of frustration when he delivered a post-game cross check to Tomas Plekanec after Monday’s tilt.

Expect the Habs defense to tighten up even more on the Penguins’ forwards, especially if defensemen Hal Gill and Andrei Markov, both listed as questionable for Wednesday’s Game 7, are back in the lineup.

          Pick: Canadiens

Boston Bruins at Philadelphia Flyers (-165, 5)

The Philadelphia Flyers aren’t going away. After falling behind 3-0 in their series against the Boston Bruins, most thought the Flyers were done. But they earned a 5-4 overtime win in Game 4 which gave them enough confidence to rout the Bruins 4-0 in Game 5 Monday night.

Philadelphia got a huge scare Monday when goalie Brian Boucher went down with injuries to both his knees in the second period. Michael Leighton, who hadn’t played since suffering a high ankle sprain March 16, took over in net with the Flyers clinging to a 1-0 lead. He made 14 saves to preserve the shutout.

“The first few minutes, I was pretty nervous”, Leighton told the Philadelphia Daily News. “You’re one mistake away from tying it up and it’s a different ball game. But we scored some goals and played well defensively… and made things easier.”

The Flyers have dealt with injuries throughout the regular season and the playoffs. But every time one player goes down another one steps up.

“The path that we’ve taken is not the ideal path, but it is our path,” head coach Peter Laviolette told the Philadelphia Daily News. “Guys have answered the bell every step of the way. We’re still here.”

Expect them to answer the bell once again in front of an appreciative home crowd Wednesday night.

          Pick: Flyers

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals (-175, 8.5)

The Astros offense just got worse, if that was possible.

Michael Bourn was given an ultimatum Tuesday: don’t bump MLB umpires when arguing or don’t come to the ballpark.

Houston’s centerfielder was suspended by the league for two games for "aggressive actions" that included making physical contact with umpire Alfonso Marquez during Saturday's game.

Bourn claimed that the contact was accidental. He appealed the suspension and was in the lineup Tuesday night. Bettors will need to check Wednesday to see if Bourn will be sitting or not.

But Houston’s offense is so bad it might not matter whether Bourn is in the lineup. The ‘Stros are last in the majors in nearly every hitting category and are averaging 2.7 runs per game. That production has equated to an over/under mark of 9-20-2 (1-7-1 on the road).

Bourn is the sparkplug of Houston’s offense with a .284 average and 11 stolen bases and if he’s not around this team from Texas will be lucky to post a crooked number on the scoreboard.

              Pick: Under

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks (+105, 9.5)

After suffering through an injury-plagued 2009 that left almost no team desiring him, Kelly Johnson has resurrected his career in Arizona.

Johnson is currently tied for the National League lead in home runs with 10, is fifth in slugging percentage and is hitting .306 against left-handed pitchers, as a lefty.

"The beauty of Kelly is he does all of this without a speck of athletic ability," said teammate Adam LaRoche. "I tell him all the time, 'Making the most out of nothing is what you do.'"

Kelly has contributed to the surprising, robust offense of the Diamondbacks from the leadoff spot. Zona ranks second in HRs, fourth in RBIs and sixth in runs scored.

These teams have been two of the most profitable for over bettors this season. L.A. came into Tuesday’s action with a 20-12 over/under record while the Snakes were 21-11-1.

Weather conditions will be perfect for balls to fly out of Chase Field Wednesday night.

              Pick: Over
