Daily Sports Roundup: May 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels play host to the Rays, the Hawks try to bounce the Canucks, and the Celtics and Cavs take the court in Cleveland.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's Boston at Cleveland in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in the lone NBA playoff game on the schedule for Tuesday. The Celtics tied up the series at 2-2 with a 97-87 home win in Game 4 on Sunday afternoon as a 1.5-point underdog. Rajon Rondo led the Celtics' attack with a triple double on Sunday (29 points, 18 rebounds, 13 assists), while Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen each tossed in 18 points in the victory. Paul Pierce was held to nine points in the game. LeBron James had a team-high 22 points to go along with nine boards and eight assists for the Cavaliers, and Shaquille O'Neal was good for 17 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Seattle at Baltimore, the Yankees at Detroit, Toronto at Boston, Oakland at Texas, the White Sox at Minnesota, Cleveland at Kansas City, and Tampa Bay at the Angels. Jeff Niemann (2-0, 2.23 ERA) will get the ball for the Rays in Tuesday's matchup, while Los Angeles will send Scott Kazmir (2-2, 7.11 ERA) to the mound against his old team. Righthander Niemann blanked the Mariners in his last outing, giving up just four hits over seven innings while fanning six batters. Lefthander Kazmir was beaten by Boston in his last start, as he gave up seven runs in 4 1-3 innings.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, Florida at the Cubs, Atlanta at Milwaukee, Houston at St. Louis, the Dodgers at Arizona, San Diego at San Francisco, and Philadelphia at Colorado. Roy Halladay (6-1, 1.45 ERA) will pitch for the Phillies on Tuesday against the Rockies' Aaron Cook (1-3, 6.03 ERA). Righthander Halladay picked up his second straight win last time out, holding the Cardinals to one earned run over his seven innings of work. Righthander Cook took a no-decision against the Padres in his last outing, surrendering five earned runs in his five innings pitched.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there's just one NHL playoff game on the schedule for Tuesday, with Chicago at Vancouver in Game 6 of their Western Conference semifinal series. the Canucks staved off elimination with a 4-1 win in Chicago in Game 5 on Sunday night. Kevin Bieksa scored twice for Vancouver in that win, while Christian Ehrhoff and Alex Burrows (empty net) had one goal apiece. Roberto Luongo stopped 29 of 30 Chicago shots on the night. Jonathan Toews had the lone goal for the Blackhawks, and goalie Antti Niemi made 20 saves in the loss.

- Major League Baseball teams are starting to scout like handicappers. Successful hardball bettors always put in time to research the umpire behind the plate, mainly for totals purposes. Umpires tendencies can sometimes help predict whether there will be a lot of runs or not scored in the game. A recent report on ESPN said that teams such as Texas, Oakland and Toronto are scouting officiating crews going into series. Predictable umpires have proven to be profitable for bettors and now teams may start to cash in as well.

- Cavs coach Mike Brown said that he will "give [LeBron James] an opportunity" to guard Rajon Rondo in Game 5. Brown was hesitant to switch James off Paul Pierce, where he has locked down the All-Star in the series, because a smaller defender on Pierce could allow him to get going. Rondo said that James won’t affect him because he’s used to bigger guys guarding him. If James can lockup Rondo like he has Pierce, a prop points under for the point guard might be in order and in turn, Pierce could explode for a big game.

- If you plan on backing the Indians, you might want to look at a 5-inning line as Kerry Wood is back in the closer’s role. In Wood’s first appearance of 2010, he retired the first two batter he saw and then gave up a double, two walks and then a two-run single. Only 10 of his 24 pitches in the two-thirds of an inning were strikes. Cleveland’s bullpen has cost the team a handful of games already and cannot be trusted at this point in the season.

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (-7.5, 193.5)

After Boston point guard Rajon Rondo went off for a triple-double in Game 4, Cleveland may elect to put LeBron James on him Tuesday.

But Mike Brown and the Cavs coaching staff might want to utilize another resource on their team that excels in keeping crafty point guards like Rondo out of the lane.

Shaquille O’Neal only played 49 seconds of the fourth quarter Sunday and was furious he couldn’t get back into the game. Shaq reportedly asked the coaches to let him back in but they refused. He did not stick around for a postgame media session.

With 17 points and a couple of blocks in the game, even James was perplexed not to see his big center on the court with the game on the line.

"Shaq played extremely well and I think it's kind of surprising that we didn't see him back on the floor the entire fourth quarter," James said.

O’Neal’s mammoth-sized frame clogs up the lane and deters smaller guards from driving in for layups. Of Rondo’s 21 shot attempts in the win, 14 of those came in the paint.

Look for Cleveland to contain Rondo with LeBron and Shaq in Game 5 by forcing him to score from outside where he was a 30 percent shooter (beyond 16 feet) during the regular season.

Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (-7.5, 193.5)

Unlike the Phoenix Suns winning their second-round series in a four-game sweep, No. 1 seed Cleveland finds itself in a battle with Boston with the series knotted at 2-2.

Ragin’ Rondo

Rajon Rondo’s accomplishment in Game 4 will certainly go down in Celtics lore as one of the best playoff performance’s ever.

His 29 points, 13 assists and 18 rebounds led Boston to a 97-87 victory Sunday at the Garden. All this from a 6–foot-1 point guard.

Rondo’s 18 boards were more than half of the Cavaliers’ total of 33.

“His definitely dominating this series at the point guard position," Cleveland’s LeBron James told reporters.

With 21.8 points, 13 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in four games, that much is obvious.

Rondo’s game is also creating serious matchup problems for the Cavs. Putting LeBron on Rondo leaves Paul Pierce with a substantial size mismatch against Cleveland smaller guards, Mo Williams or Delonte West. And the last thing the Cavs want to do is rouse Pierce, who's having a dreadful series (11.8 PPG, on 32 percent shooting).

Don’t be surprised to find James play Rondo straight up and the Cavs defend Pierce with Antawn Jamison or Anthony Parker.

"If the opportunity presents itself, I would take the challenge," James said.

"I would love to. Maybe it's something we should explore… I have no problem with taking Rondo for the entire game. But they kind of counter what we put on the court so I can't switch off on him."

Trouble in paradise

James took a subtle swipe at head coach Mike Brown after Sunday’s game.

He said it was "kind of surprising" that Shaquille O'Neal didn't return to the game after picking up his fifth foul with over 11 minutes left in the fourth and Boston leading 76-72. The Celtics immediately went on an 8-0 run with Shaq out of the game.

If it wasn't for Shaq's solid 17-point performance in 28 minutes the final 10-point deficit might have been worse.

It was evident that Cleveland entered Sunday’s game thinking that the 29 points they won by Friday night was enough to win both games.

Strangely, aside from instituting a poor offensive game plan, Brown refuses to allow 7-foot-3 center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who together with O’Neal combine to average 12.1 rebounds per game, to get off the bench. As a result the Cavs continue to be out-rebounded by a smaller, less-athletic Celtics team.

Mark it down.If the Celtics take Game 5 in Cleveland, Brown can kiss his job - and LeBron’s future in Cleveland - good-bye.

Lone ranger

Most NBA champions feature a superstar and a sidekick. An MVP alone cannot cut down the nets.

From the Lakers’ glory days of Magic Johnson and James Worthy, to Boston’s Bill Russell and John Havlicek, or Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, and on to Chicago’s Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, every legendary championship team possessed a terrific tandem.

The question that LeBron James struggles with these days is, “Who is my Tonto?”

It’s certainly not Mo Williams or Antawn Jamison. Bettors know that, for sure.

If James is to win an NBA championship in Cleveland, O’Neal needs to become the Robin to his Batman.

Celtic green

The Celtics made NBA history last week – just not the good kind.

When general manager Danny Ainge was fined $25,000 for throwing a towel in Game 2 while trying to distract J.J. Hickson as the Cavaliers forward attempted a free throw, the Celtics became the first team in league history to have a player, coach and GM fined in the same season.

The NBA didn't start keeping records on its fines until the early 1990s.Back in the day, Ainge's towel toss probably would have drawn scorn at the most.

If no one else makes a contribution to the league's unnamed charity fund, the Celtics will have paid out a league-leading $175,000 in fines this season, led by Rasheed Wallace's $100,000. Ainge ($25,000), coach Doc Rivers ($25,000) and Glen Davis ($25,000) round out the list.

When informed of the team's unusual trifecta, Davis commented, “I don't feel so alone anymore.”

Wallace, though, has a problem with the fact the league doesn't name the charities that benefit from the fine money.

“They say that's where it goes, but I'm not so sure,'' said Wallace.

Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks (-135, 6)

The Chicago Blackhawks had a great opportunity to put an end to the Vancouver Canucks’ season at home Sunday night, but they were beaten at their own game. The Canucks were the more physical team in Game 4, dominating the entire way en route to a 4-1 win.

After suffering three consecutive losses, Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo was in full form, making 29 stops and outplaying his counterpart Antti Niemi. But the most important thing for the Canucks was their ability to remain disciplined and to force Chicago into taking bad penalties.

“The one thing we know, we were not going to get frustrated, no matter what happened on the ice,” Luongo told the Chicago Tribune. “We were going to stick to the game plan and not let other stuff get in the way of how we played.”

Vancouver’s penalty kill was also much more efficient than in Game 4 when it allowed the Blackhawks to score four power play goals on eight opportunities. Chicago finished the game 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

The only thing that went wrong for Vancouver in Game 5 was a testicular injury suffered by defenseman Sami Salo, which forced him to leave the game at the end of the first period. He is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s tilt, but it seems unlikely he will be able to play.

“Guys will step up”, Ryan Johnson told the Vancouver Sun. “We’ve had to do it all year.”

Vancouver will have a hard time getting the job done against a Blackhawks team that has rebounded with a win after all three of its playoff losses and has won four of its five postseason games away from the United Center.

The best offense is a good defense

The Vancouver Canucks lived to fight another day thanks to some solid work on the blueline and stellar goaltending from Roberto Luongo.

Vancouver took a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center Sunday, avoiding elimination and forcing the Western Conference semifinal back to GM Place for Game 6 Tuesday.

The Canucks weathered 30 shots from the Blackhawks, only giving up a third-period goal to Chicago star forward Jonathan Toews. Not only did the defensive corps lock down an explosive Blackhawks offense, it also chipped in on the other end of the ice. Defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Kevin Bieksa scored the first three goals of the game while Bieksa added an assist on Alexandre Burrows’ empty-net goal late in the third period.

“Everybody contributed - and that’s what we need,” Luongo told the Globe and Mail. “We got some big goals early from the ‘D’ but they also made some huge plays in our own zone, down low, on the PK. We’ve got to refocus and get ready for the next game.”

The Canucks blueline did, however, take a hit Sunday night. Defenseman Sami Salo left the game with a testicular injury after being struck by Duncan Keith's shot from the point. Nolan Baumgartner is the most likely replacement if Salo is out for Game 6.

Road warriors

Home ice hasn’t meant much in this second-round series. After Vancouver’s 4-1 win in Chicago Sunday, the road team has now on four of the first five games of this series – which could bode when for Chicago in Game 6.

The Blackhawks rolled over the Canucks in Vancouver, imposing their physical brand on hockey and getting under the skin of the Canucks’ top performers. Chicago outscored Vancouver 12-6 and made life difficult for Luongo, crowding the goaltenders crease with big bodies.

In the playoffs, the Blackhawks are 4-1 on the road and are averaging more than four goals per game in opposing rinks. The Canucks are 2-3 inside GM Place and allow 3.8 goals per game as hosts this postseason.

“Home-ice advantage, I don’t know what it means anymore,” Bieksa told reporters. “You go on the road and it’s a different mentality - weathering storms and simplifying your game and maybe that benefits teams.”

Basic instinct

With the Canucks on the ropes, the Blackhawks couldn’t deliver the knockout blow in Game 5 at home Sunday.

That lack of killer instinct is rare for this young but opportunistic club. The previous five times Chicago had a chance to pull the plug on a playoff opponent, it has done so without remorse.

"We were kind of sitting back, we weren't initiating like we usually do," center John Madden told the Chicago Tribune. "Before we knew it we were two down and they were just kind of trapping it up and getting pucks deep and for the most part winning all the battles."

It also didn’t help that Chicago handed the Canucks six power-play chances, in which Vancouver made the most of in the second period.

The Blackhawks have allowed the Canucks to score on five of their 24 man advantages in this series. They also failed to score on their five power-play opportunities in Game 5, dropping Chicago’s power-play efficiency to 26.9 percent for the series.

"We were just slow making plays," defenseman Brian Campbell told the media. "We were a step behind the whole night for some reason. Once we got the puck we didn't move our feet, and once we let go of the puck we didn't move our feet and get into areas. It was maybe a little bit too much one-on-one play and not using our advantage of moving the puck and skating.

"We definitely didn't get the job done."

Seattle Mariners at Baltimore Orioles (+125, 8)

Seattle’s offense has been in a slumber this season, literally.

The Tacoma News Tribune reported Monday that Ken Griffey Jr. missed a pinch-hit opportunity during a game last week because he was napping in the clubhouse.

"He was asleep in the clubhouse," an unnamed Mariner told the newspaper. "He'd gone back about the fifth inning to get a jacket and didn't come back. I went back in about the seventh inning -- and he was in his chair, sound asleep."

You know your offense is pretty pathetic when Junior won’t even rouse from a catnap to stand in the batter’s box.

Seattle ranks 29th in the majors with 102 runs scored and last in home runs with 12. Despite an eight-run outburst Sunday, this offensively inept team has produced a 12-17-2 over/under record this year and has failed to plate more than three runners in eight of its last 10 ballgames.

With Milton Bradley out with personal problems, Jack Wilson questionable with a knee injury and Griffey catching an afternoon siesta, who is going to power this lineup?

It doesn’t matter who’s on the bump for Baltimore in this matchup because Seattle stinks and Cliff Lee will surely keep the O’s bats in check.

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (-125, 8.5)

The best team in baseball failed to get a runner to first baseball Sunday, but some may have seen it coming.

Before Dallas Braden threw a perfect game against Tampa Bay, the Rays came into the contest hitting .207 in their previous eight outings and posting two runs or fewer in five of those.

"(We) don't worry about it," B. J. Upton said Sunday. "You don't like to be no-hit but it’s still just a loss. We'll be over it in about 30 minutes."

Tampa will conclude a nine-game West Coast road trip Wednesday and the time change may finally be catching up with the team.

The last stop on the trip is Anaheim where the Rays have not fared well. Going into Monday, Tampa was 1-13 in Southern California since 2006 and 6-34 in the last 40 games at Angel Stadium.
