    Daily Sports Roundup: May 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Magic try to sweep the Hawks, the Lakers try to sweep the Jazz, and the Penguins look to close out the Canadiens.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Two NBA playoff series could end in sweeps on Monday night, with Orlando at Atlanta and the Lakers at Utah. The Magic took a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series with an easy 105-75 road win over the Hawks in Game 3 on Saturday night. Dwight Howard picked up 21 points and 16 boards for Orlando in that win, while Joe Johnson was held to just eight points for Atlanta. The Lakers slipped past the Jazz 111-110 on the road in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal set on Saturday night, as Kobe Bryant poured in 35 points. Deron Williams had a team-high 28 points in a losing cause for Utah.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The condensed American League schedule for Monday has the Yankees at Detroit, Toronto at Boston, and Tampa Bay at the Angels. The Rays are slated to send Matt Garza (5-1, 2.09 ERA) to the mound in Monday's contest, with Los Angeles countering with Joel Pineiro (2-4, 5.30 ERA). Righthander Garza beat the Mariners in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just two earned runs on five hits over his eight innings of work. Righthander Pineiro has been tagged with the loss in each of his past three starts, most recently falling to the Red Sox; Pineiro gave up two earned runs on eight hits over six innings of work on that day.

Meanwhile, the National League on Monday offers up Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, Florida at the Cubs, Atlanta at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Colorado. The Phillies' Kyle Kendrick (1-1, 5.87 ERA) is scheduled to take on the Rockies' Greg Smith (1-2, 6.35 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Kendrick picked up his first win of the season last time out, holding the Cardinals scoreless on six hits over seven innings of work. Lefthander Smith was stuck with a no-decision last time out against the Padres despite giving up just one run over five innings; Colorado is 1-5 in Smith's starts.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL could also see some series get wrapped up Monday, with Philadelphia at Boston and Pittsburgh at Montreal. The Flyers staved off elimination with a 5-4 home win in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal set with the Bruins on Friday; Simon Gagne had the winner in overtime in that contest for Philadelphia. The Penguins took a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Canadiens by winning 2-1 at home in Game 5 on Saturday night. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 32 of 33 Montreal shots in that victory, while Kris Letang and Sergei Gonchar had goals for the Pens. Michael Cammalleri scored for Montreal.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

The total in the Marlins-Cubs game is off pending wind direction and speed.

Lines to keep an eye on

Magic opened as 5.5-point favorites over the Hawks but that number has climbed to as high as 6 at some books. The total fell from 193.5 to 193.

Lakers-Jazz total opened at 205.5 and quickly climbed to as high as 207. The first three games of the series have gone over.

      Weather to watch

Marlins-Cubs game faces a 40 percent chance of showers.

Braves-Brewers game sees a 30 percent chance of rain in the forecast.

      Who's hot

Magic have win 13 in a row (12-1 ATS).

Lakers are 8-1 SU in last nine vs. Jazz.

Bruins are 7-2 in their last nine overall.

      Who's not

Hawks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight.

Flyers are 2-8 in their last 10 as underdog.

Mariners are 1-8 in their last nine.

      Key stat

0-0-0/8-6-3 - The number of hits, runs and walks A's pitcher Dallas Braden allowed in his perfect game against the Rays on Sunday compared to his numbers in his last start against the same team 11 days earlier.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Canadiens could be down two key defenders for Game 6 against Pittsburgh. Defensemen Jaroslav Spacek (illness) and Hal Gill (leg) are listed as day to day for tonight's elimination game against the Penguins, not the time nor the team you want to play shorthanded on the defensive end of the ice.

      Game of the day

      Magic at Hawks (5.5, 194)

      Notable quotable

"(The fans) don’t bother me. It’s about us in this locker room. We could care less if they showed up or not."

Hawks guard Joe Johnson said of fans who booed him and his teammates during their 105-75 loss to the Magic in Game 3 in Atlanta. Johnson went 3-for-15 from the field for only eight points.

      Tips and notes

If the Hawks were as good at scoring points as they are at pointing fingers they might not find themselves in the 3-0 series hole to the Magic. The Hawks have been outscored by an average of 29 points per game in the series and Saturday's 105-75 loss was the low point. Coach Mike Woodson called his team's effort "nonexistent", guard Joe Johnson teed off on booing fans and center Al Horford said "when things don't go our way everybody just kind of seems to crawl into their own little hole." It all adds up to a big hole for the Hawks, and they don't seem ready, willing or able to climb out of it.

Home ice has been kind to the Bruins, who have won seven straight heading into tonight's Game 5 against the Flyers. The Bruins won the first two games against the visiting Flyers, swept their three first-round games against Sabres in Boston and haven't lost at home since April 1. The Flyers, on the other hand, have been woeful on the road late in the season, going 4-12 in their last 16 away from home. While it's true that fans can't impact the game on the ice, it's hard to overlook such a geographically proven trend.

Super Saver will run his first and only serious workout for the Preakness today at Pimlico Downs, where he has been stabled since shortly after winning the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Todd Pletcher believes the colt is more comfortable on the 1 3/16-mile course, especially since he's spent almost two weeks training there. "I wouldn’t trade places with anyone, especially going to Pimlico and backing up a little bit of distance," he said. "I think he’s got a tactical edge because he’s not relying on the trip like many of the rest of them." Keep an eye on his workout today while his future odds are still long.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz (-2.5, 207)

Can Zen master Phil Jackson make his team better even when he screws up? Unless he's really good at playing mind games that's exactly what happened over the weekend.

Jackson has been riding Ron Artest about his 3-point shooting throughout the playoffs. Artest entered Saturday's Game 3 against the Jazz shooting 7-for-42 from behind the arc.

After some particularly tough public criticism Friday, Artest Tweeted several angry, late-night messages about Jackson. Artest's brother claims his Twitter account was hacked, probably by the same "real killer" O.J. is still tracking.

The whole thing came to a head with a pre-game team meeting in which Artest was "apologetic" and Jackson was "sympathetic", perhaps followed by the joining of hands and singing of "Kumbaya" and Artest's best performance of the playoffs - 20 points and 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

"You heard me before the game, I said we know he can make them," Jackson said of Artest. "Three-point shooters run hot and cold and tonight he was pretty hot. I thought he was very effective."

With the air clear, the Lakers had one of their best outside shooting nights of the postseason. Granted, they only won Game 3 on a late tip-in, but the Lakers have been guilty of taking games off on the road when they have a series lead (see Oklahoma City).

The heart-to-heart may have been what the Lakers needed to snap out of their recent malaise, and the heart-breaking loss may have been just enough to rip the life out of the Jazz.

"It’s a tough loss, period," Utah guard Deron Jackson said. "Again, we were in the game, but things just keep going the other way."

          Pick: Lakers

Game of the day: Magic at Hawks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks (+5.5, 194)

The Orlando Magic look to close out the Atlanta Hawks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Magic have won the first three games of the series by an average of nearly 30 points.

            It’s over Yogi

No NBA team has ever come back from an 0-3 deficit and the Hawks surely look like they’ve thrown the towel in. About the only thing left for Atlanta backers is to see if they can cover the spread in one of these games. They’ve lost all three games ATS also.

The Magic have won seven straight playoff games, they’re the only team not to lose a playoff contest this year. Surely they would like to close this one and hope the Celtics and Cavaliers go the distance.

Joe, you ought to be embarrassed

            Joe Johnson was.

Johnson shot 3-of-15 in Saturday’s mess. In a series that was supposed to be competitive, the Hawks haven’t even shown up. They shot 35 percent from the floor in Saturday’s 105-75 loss and watched the Magic do whatever they wanted on the other end of the court. Ten Orlando players scored. It shot 50 percent and out-rebounded Atlanta 51-34.

It was the Hawks’ worst home loss of the season and their worst home playoff loss in franchise history.

Johnson is eyeing a big payday after the season but his certainly giving his agent ulcers with his postseason performance.

Hawks coach Mike Woodson is in the same predicament. He is in the final year, perhaps final game of a two-year contract.

            Comeback kids?

While it would take an act of God or congress to revive the Hawks in the series, Atlanta should be able to make things interesting in Game 4.

After all, the Hawks were 34-7 at home in the regular season and lost two straight on its homecourt only once - the second game of that skid came in overtime against the Knicks on New Year’s Day .

The Hawks have won 72 percent of their games following a loss and now they’ve lost three straight.

Home ain’t so sweet after all

If the Hawks don’t come out of the blocks on fire Monday, the fans are poised to turn on them.

Homecourt could turn into a disadvantage Monday. The few fans who stayed until the end of Saturday’s game booed the Hawks steadily.

That didn’t seem to bother Johnson, who said after the game he could care less if they showed up at all. He’ll certainly be a target of their wrath if Atlanta trails early

            Trend setting

-Seven of the past eight games in this series have gone under.
-The Magic has won 13 straight games now, counting the regular season. They’ve outscored the Hawks in 11-of-12 quarters in this series.
-The Magic have won ATS in nine of their last 10 games.
-The Magic is 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games
-The Magic haven’t lost since April 2.
-The Magic have won nine of the last 10 games in this series.
-Two of the three games in this series have gone under the total.
-Five of the last six Atlanta games have gone under the total. On the season, Atlanta games went over 47 times.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Montreal Canadiens (155, 5.5)

In a series and sport of attrition, the Penguins are starting to win the battle on the ice and the trainers' room.

Pittsburgh center Jordan Staal, right wing Bill Guerin and left wing Mike Rupp are all back in the lineup after missing time with injuries and have at least one game under their belts to get back in the groove.

Although they did not score, all three were credited for setting effective screens in the Pens' victory in Game 5, not to mention helping wear down super goalie Jaroslav Halak.

"When you have a goaltender who's playing (the way Halak is), you need to get people there," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "That's an indication of how we need to score goals."

While the Penguins are getting healthier on offense, the Canadiens are going in the opposite direction on defense. Blueliners Jaroslav Spacek (illness) and Hal Gill (leg) are questionable for tonight's Game 6.

Even if they can play, having two blueliners at less than 100 percent against the explosive Penguins could spell the end of the Habs' surprising postseason run and the series' streak of four straight unders.

                Pick: Over

What bettors need to know: Flyers at Bruins
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins (-143, 5)

                  Boston leads series 3-1.

                  Fight or Flight?

With their backs against the wall, the Philadelphia Flyers came out swinging in Game 4.

Philadelphia rebounded from a late third-period collapse in overtime, getting the game-winning goal from Simon Gagne in the extra frame. The Flyers victory kept them alive for one more game but may have also instilled an aura of confidence in the team heading into Game 5 in Boston.

"I think it gives us confidence just that we can win again," captain Mike Richards told reporters. "You go through a little bit of a drought like that, some bad luck, and you kind of start doubting yourself."

Game 4 was Philadelphia’s best offensive showing of the series, coming on the heels on two dismal performances in Games 2 and 3. The Flyers scored just three total goals on 61 combined shots over those two contests. They netted five goals on 34 shots in Friday’s win.

"I like the way that we played our first two games (in Boston)," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette told The Press of Atlantic City. "I just don't like the results. They could've gone either way."

Three of the four games this series have been decided by just one goal, with two of those going into overtime.

                  Bruins in ruins

The grueling NHL playoff pace is taking its toll on the Boston Bruins’ roster.

Boston is without top forwards Marco Sturm and David Krejci, who were injured in this series and are unlikely to return for the remainder of the postseason. However, the Bruins have been playing with holes in their lineup all season, suffering countless injuries over the course of the year.

In total, Boston lost 180-man games to ailments this season and still managed to fight for sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 39-30-4-9 and one of the best defenses in the league, giving up just 2.3 goals per game.

"It's unfortunate," Milan Lucic told the National Post. "But like you said, I don't know how many times (the team has lost a key player). It's just another test for us that we're going to have to overcome. We've had to battle it all year, so we have a lot of experience playing without key guys in the lineup."

In other injury news, defenseman Dennis Seidenberg skated this weekend and could make his return to the Bruins lineup. Seidenberg has been out since April 3 with a lacerated tendon in his left forearm. Fellow blueliner Adam McQuaid is nursing a undisclosed injury lower-body injury and is listed as doubtful for Monday’s game.

                  Simon says

Simon Gagne made up for missed time with his series debut Friday. After missing the first three games against the Bruins due to a broken foot, the Flyers forward netted the overtime winner in Game 4.

"(Gagne) had a number of good shifts tonight with Richie and Car-bomb, and we're going to need more of that on Monday," defenseman Chris Pronger told the media. "We need to get goals from a lot of different guys. It's tough to rely on one or two guys to always score the goals for us. When you get four or five guys scoring goals for you (each) night, you're going to win a lot of hockey games."

While the Flyers got Gagne back on its top line, they’re still missing Jeff Carter and could be minus trouble maker Dan Carcillo, who left Friday’s game with a knee injury. The two days off should give the pesky forward time to heal up, however, the team has not said much about his injury.

                  Power shift

The deciding edge in this second-round series has been special teams play.

Philadelphia has not scored in its last 10 power-play opportunities over the past three games while Boston has netted at least one goal with the man advantage per game in that same span.

The Bruins also rank tops in the NHL in penalty kill efficiency this postseason, posting a 94.1 percent success rate while down a man. The Flyers have killed off just under 85 percent of their penalties in the playoffs.

Sergio Mitre makes his first start of the season for the Bronx Bombers, taking veteran Andy Pettitte's place in the rotation while he nurses a sore elbow.

Mitre is no stranger to the starting mound or elbow soreness. He started nine games for the Yankees last season after coming off Tommy John surgery and has 61 career starts to his credit.

Mitre has been solid as a reliever this season, posting a 2.79 ERA in five appearances. But he hasn't thrown more than three innings in a single outing and hasn't started a game since last season, when he lost two straight outings before going back to the bullpen.

Mitre, who had a 6.79 ERA as a starter last season, could have his arm strength put to the test if he makes it to the middle innings. His run support spent a late night at Fenway Park before flying to Detroit.

Detroit counters with Dontrelle Willis, who is having a solid comeback season, and the Tigers' powerful batting order could spell problems for Mitre and the Yanks.

                    Pick: Tigers

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (135, 8.5)

A's pitcher Dallas Braden made the mighty Rays' lineup looked like Little Leaguers by pitching a perfect game against them on Sunday. Don't expect it to be the start of a trend.

The Rays face Angels starter Joel Pinero, who has struggled against heavy-hitting team this season. He has lost his last three starts, allowing a combined 19 hits and 15 earned runs in 9.1 innings against the Tigers and Yankees.

The Rays certainly qualify as heavy hitters and they send Matt Garza to the mound, who is a red-hot 5-1 this season but has had problems with the Angels. In his last two starts vs. the AL's L.A., he lasted just 10 total innings and allowed 13 hits, eight earned runs and eight walks.

After a day when the Rays and Angels combined for just one run and five hits, look for both offenses to come to life tonight.

                    Pick: Over

                      This Day in Baseball
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 10 in Baseball History...

1888 - The Philadelphia Athletics play their first official Sunday home game at Gloucester, NJ — or so they think. The American Association league secretary will later rule the game illegally rescheduled and throw it out of the official records.

1959 - Philadelphia's Jim Hearn allows two earned runs before the game is suspended with the Pirates ahead 6-4. Hearn is released before the game is completed in July and is charged with the loss — two months after his retirement.

1967 - In the eighth inning against Jim Bunning of the Phillies, Hank Aaron drives a ball to deep center field and scores ahead of the relay. It will be the only inside-the-park home run among his 755.

1970 - While losing 6-5 to St. Louis, the Braves' Hoyt Wilhelm becomes the first pitcher ever to appear in 1,000 games.

1981 - Montreal's Charlie Lea, a native of France, no-hits the Giants 4-0, walking four and striking out eight in the second game of a doubleheader. It is the first no-hitter at Olympic Stadium, which opened for baseball in 1977.

1989 - Mark Langston no-hits Toronto for eight innings before Tom Lawless singles and the Blue Jays rally for three runs to beat Seattle 3-2. It is the third time already in 1989 that the Blue Jays have broken up a no-hit bid in the ninth inning.
