    Daily Sports Roundup: May 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays take on the Royals, the Phillies play host to the Mets, and the NBA finally concludes the first round of its playoffs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has two games on tap for Sunday, including Milwaukee at Atlanta in the seventh and deciding game of that first-round series. The Hawks forced this matchup with an 83-69 road win in Game 6 on Friday night. Jamal Crawford scored a team-high 24 points off the bench for Atlanta in that contest, while Joe Johnson picked up 22 points and six assists. Al Horford chipped in with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Carlos Delfino was the lone bright spot on offense for the Bucks in Friday's loss, as he poured in a team-high 20 points. Brandon Jennings was held to 12 points in the Game 6 defeat. Sunday's tip-off is set for 1:00pm ET.

As well, the league will kick off the second round of the Western Conference playoffs on Sunday with Utah at the Lakers later in the afternoon. Los Angeles finally dispatched Oklahoma City on Friday night, squeezing out a 95-94 road win in Game 6 of that first-round series. Pau Gasol tipped in the winning bucket in the dying seconds for the Lakers in that contest, while Kobe Bryant led the way on offense with a team-high 32 points. The Jazz grabbed a 112-104 home win over the Nuggets on Friday night to take that first-round series 4-2. Wesley Matthews tossed in 23 points for the Jazz in that matchup, while Carlos Boozer picked up 22 points and 20 rebounds. Paul Millsap was good for 21 points off of the bench.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

American League action on Sunday has Minnesota at Cleveland, the Angels at Detroit, the White Sox at the Yankees, Oakland at Toronto, Boston at Baltimore, Texas at Seattle, and Kansas City at Tampa Bay. Zack Greinke (0-2, 2.56 ERA) is set to take on Wade Davis (2-1, 3.68 ERA) in that Royals/Rays matchup. Righthander Greinke had to settle for a no-decision in his last start against the Mariners despite tossing seven scoreless innings while fanning five batters. Righthander Davis grabbed a win over the Athletics in his most recent outing, giving up four earned runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out four.

Over in the National League on Sunday it'll be Washington at Florida, Houston at Atlanta, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Arizona at the Cubs, Milwaukee at San Diego, Colorado at San Francisco, Pittsburgh at the Dodgers, and the Mets at Philadelphia. New York will go with Johan Santana (3-1, 2.08 ERA) in their Sunday matchup; lefthander Santana picked up a win over the Dodgers in his last start, tossing six scoreless innings while surrendering just four hits. The Phillies will counter with Jamie Moyer (2-2, 5.25 ERA); lefthander Moyer is coming off a loss to the Giants in which he allowed four runs over his six innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are two NHL playoff games on Sunday, with Montreal at Pittsburgh and Detroit at San Jose. The Penguins doubled up on the Canadiens 6-3 in the opening game of their second-round series on Friday night. Sidney Crosby recorded a pair of assists for the Pens in that win, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves. Habs netminder Jaroslav Halak was pulled after giving up five goals on 20 shots. The Sharks took a 1-0 lead in their series with the Wings with a 4-3 win in Game 1 on Thursday. Joe Pavelski scored twice for San Jose in that contest, and Dan Boyle had three assists. Pavel Datsyuk picked up two assists for Detroit.

Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

The total in the Diamondbacks-Cubs game is OTB because the wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field is unknown. With the wind blowing out, the totals in the first two games were set at 13 and 14.5 and both went over.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Bucks-Hawks game has plummeted since its opener of 189. Most shops are currently offering 185.5 and some even a half point lower. The last two games in this series have gone under.

An opening total of 202 has been bet down to 199.5 in the Jazz-Lakers matchup. Seven straight meetings between these two have gone under the posted total.

There is a wide array of moneylines available for the Habs-Penguins game. Pittsburgh opened as -260 favorites but a couple of Vegas books are offering -220 while some offshore shops are as high as -300.

The total in the Reds-Cardinals game has dropped a half run from its opener and now stands at 7.5.

      Weather report

Scattered thunderstorms in the Cleveland area will bring a 40 percent chance of rain during the Twins-Indians matchup. Wind will blow out to center field at 21 mph.

      Who’s hot

The Penguins are 7-3 SU over a 10-game stretch.

Los Angeles has covered the spread in its last two games versus the Jazz.

The Sharks have won four straight games.

      Who’s not

The Hawks are 1-3 ATS in the last four games.

Houston is 0-5 SU in its last five outings.

The Brewers had dropped four straight games going into Saturday.

      Key stat

14 – Number of consecutive games Utah has lost to the Lakers at the Staples Center. That includes three straight playoff losses.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

New York Yankees centerfielder Curtis Granderson will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained groin on Saturday. Granderson was injured while running the bases during the sixth inning of Saturday's loss to the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees have recalled pitcher Mark Melancon from Triple A to take Granderson's place on the 25-man roster while Brett Gardner will move to center field to take his place in the lineup.

      Game of the Day

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies (+125, 9)

      Notable quotable

"He still needs work. I was just putting him in for a couple of hitters, really; I wanted to get J.C. Romero in the game for a couple of hitters. But Lidge needs work."

-- Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said after Brad Lidge gave up a home run and single in his first outing of the season.

      Tips and notes

      - If you’re a smoker, you can probably relate to this. MLB informed Tigers manager Jim Leyland that he will not be able to smoke cigarettes inside Comerica Park any longer because a statewide smoking ban will go into effect Sunday. Leyland would religiously sneak a few smoke during games. This nugget doesn’t have as much to do with the team as the manager, but a grumpy and irritated manager could translate to poor decisions on the field.

      - There are a few NL closers bettors should be thinking of before placing a bet. Phillies save specialist, Brad Lidge, returned to action Friday and gave up a home run and a single. He blew 11 saves last year and may need some time to get back in the groove. Brewers ancient closer Trevor Hoffman has blown three saves this season but Ken Macha is sticking with him. Lastly, Chad Qualls has blown two of his seven save opportunities for Arizona this season.

      - The Pads are the surprise team of the young MLB season. San Diego is in first place in the NL West with a 15-8 record .What’s even more impressive is that they are 9-2 at PETCO and haven’t had trouble putting up runs at the “pitcher’s park.” Kevin Blanks said the Padres have an advantage at home and “love playing here” because the team is in “a comfort zone.” Diego listed at -105 against the Brewers Sunday.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Atlanta Hawks (-9.5, 185.5)

Atlanta may have finally learned the secret to beating Milwaukee in Game 6 - the Hawks have to work just as hard as the Bucks.

Talent alone has not been enough, as the Hawks quickly discovered after letting their guard down with a 2-0 series lead. The Bucks went to work, winning or tying the battle on the boards and scoring an average of 103 points in Games 3-5 with a chance to close out the series at home in Game 6.

But the Hawks snapped out of it Friday night, outrebounding the Bucks 51-42 and playing lock-down defense to hold them to series-low 69 points. Al Horford's 15 points, 15 boards and defensive presence along with sixth-man Jamal Crawford's game-high 24 points forced Game 7 in Atlanta.

"The bottom line today is we brought our hard hats and not our fishing caps," said Atlanta's Josh Smith, who added 10 points and nine rebounds. "We established ourselves early. They gave us a fight, but we were just hungry tonight. I haven’t seen us play like this the whole series."

That's because they haven't - until now. The Hawks finally learned the valuable lesson of hard work they're not likely to forget it in Game 7. They may not cover the almost-double-digit spread, but look for a similarly strong defensive effort.

          Pick: Under

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers (-7, 202)

The Lakers were taken to the wall by the upstart Thunder in their Western Conference quarterfinal, winning Game 6 and the series on a tip-in at the buzzer by Pao Gasol on Friday night.

As close as the series was and as bad as the Lakers looked at times, a good scare may have been just what they needed to raise their level of play. A 4-0 sweep would have prolonged their sense of entitlement.

"It was great for us to get through this, to know that we're not the best thing since sliced bread," Lakers center Ron Artest said. "We know we have to work. We learned we can't fall asleep."

Utah Jazz has the Lakers' full attention, and L.A. has history on its side. The Jazz have been knocked out of the playoffs by the Lakers the last two postseasons and haven't won a game at the Staples Center in their last 14 tries.

Utah got by without starters Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur against the Nuggets and point guard Deron Williams, who orchestrates the Jazz offense, is questionable with a sore elbow.

It all adds up to a hot start for the Lakers at home.

          Pick: Lakers

NBA Round 2 preview and picks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Western Conference

A not-so great man once said, “I hate to brag but damn I’m good.”

I’m quoting a Shaquille O’Neal rap lyric because I’m feeling pretty good myself. I went 4-0 with my first round Western Conference series picks and now I’m back to tell you which teams will advance to the Western Conference finals.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz (+340 for series)

If we’ve learned anything about the Lakers this year it’s that they can win without Kobe Bryant playing a great offensive game. Pau Gasol can be the main option in the triangle offense for long stretches of time. He’s got all sorts of low post moves and he’s one of the best passing big men in the game.

You can’t underestimate Andrew Bynum’s play either. He was a non-factor in last year’s postseason and injured the year L.A. lost to Boston in the Finals. He’s meshing well playing next to Gasol right now.

The Lakers have proven to be a bad matchup for the Jazz. Utah lost in five games in last year’s first round matchup and the club also went just 1-3 against the spread versus the Lake Show during the regular season.

Deron Williams is the type of elite point guard who’ll make Derek Fisher look like he doesn’t belong in the league. But Los Angeles will probably put Bryant and Ron Artest on Williams to try and take away the Jazz guard’s penetration.

Carlos Boozer will struggle to put up big numbers with Gasol, Bynum and reserve forward Lamar Odom crowding the paint.

And don’t forget about the coaching trend here either. Jerry Sloan has been Phil Jackson's whipping boy in the playoffs.

            Pick: Lakers in five games

Phoenix Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs (+115)

It doesn’t seem fair. Every time the Suns put together a good season and seem poised for a deep playoff run, the Spurs come along and stump them.

The Suns have made the playoffs five times since 2003 and four times they’ve been eliminated by San Antonio. And even though this year’s Spurs don’t seem as deep as years past, you got to like their chances of bouncing Phoenix once again.

The cons on San Antonio are clear. Tim Duncan struggles to gain good post position like he used to. That means Amare Stoudemire shouldn’t be getting into foul trouble as much.

But I still like the Spurs at every other starting position. I don’t like bashing Steve Nash but his inability to guard anyone on the floor means the Suns have to play 4-on-5 whenever their opponents have the ball. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will exploit this advantage.

            Pick: Spurs in six games

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-300, 5.5)

The Penguins were able to do in Game 1 what the top-seeded Washington Capitals couldn't do in Games 5-7 against Montreal - beat goalie Jaroslav Halak like a bongo.

Unlike the usually high-scoring Caps, who went 1-for-33 in power-play opportunities against the Habs, the Pens converted all four chances in Friday's 6-3 victory. Perhaps more impressive was the fact that six different players scored goals - none of them named Sidney Crosby.

That was the Pens' plan of attack in Game 1 - spread the puck around against the Habs' neutral-zone trap and use shots not just to score goals, but also to create them.

"We're going to take a different approach to scoring goals than Washington did," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Montreal looked pretty comfortable playing its game."

The Caps were held to 10 goals from players not on the top line in their series. The Pens are already halfway to that number and have a history of wearing down goalies over the course of a series. Since 2008, they are 23-7 against opposing goalies in the playoffs after Game 2.

              Pick: Over

Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks (-145, 5.5)

Ever hear the one about going to a hockey game and a soccer match breaking out? That's what happened in Game 1 when Sharks forward Devin Setoguchi took a flop more fit for the pitch than the ice.

Setoguchi was the victim of a slash at the end of the second period but his acting performance helped gain a two-man advantage that the Sharks converted into the game-winning goal for a 4-3 victory. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock questioned his heritage, if not his manhood, after the game.

"That's a slash for sure, but don't dive on the ice and embellish it," Babcock told the Detroit News. "You are from Western Canada, don't do that crap."

Perhaps the manner of the loss moreso than the loss itself should be enough to fire up the Red Wings, who had a similar slow start in their Western Conference quarterfinal opener at Phoenix before bouncing back in convincing fashion with a 7-4 victory in Game 2.

The dramatic gesture might inspire the Red Wings, who are 11-5 in their last 16 meetings against the Sharks, to bring their hard-nosed brand of hockey into this one, and it's not an act.

              Pick: Red Wings

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers (-125, 8.5)

Sometimes confronting death face-to-face can change a man, for the better or worse.

When the Angels were in New York for a series in late April, a handful of team members witnessed the aftermath of a man who jumped to his death from the rooftop of their hotel. Starting pitcher Jered Weaver saw everything as the suicide unfolded.

"Weaver actually saw him (land)," pitcher Matt Palmer said. "As a believer in Christ, you have to sit there and pray for the man. You don't even know him, but you think about what he might have been going through and you're hoping that his family - or whoever he has - can somehow fathom what he did.

“As far as myself, it was an eye-awakening scene. Even if I have a bad day on the mound, it's nothing compared to what he just did."

Weaver got an up-close view of death and perhaps it provided him with a different outlook on life.

The righty is certainly pitching like a new man. Since the tragedy, Weaver has surrendered three earned runs in two starts (13.0 innings) while compiling 13 strikeouts.

Look for Weaver to continue to roll and the Angels to avoid the sweep Sunday.

                Pick: Angels

Washington Nationals at Florida Marlins (-200, 8.5)

Tommy John surgery can sometimes ruin a pitcher’s career or it sometimes can revive it. Fortunately, the latter happened for Marlins ace Josh Johnson.

Since going under the knife after the 2007 season, Johnson is 24-7 with a 3.33 ERA. He ranks sixth with a career 3.39 ERA among active starters with at least 500 innings.

The big right-hander has totaled double-digit strikeouts in two of his last three starts and hasn’t given up more than two runs during that stretch. Johnson is 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA on the season.

And an added comfort for bettors backing Johnson is that the pitcher is a threat in the 9-hole. Against the Padres last Wednesday, Johnson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate.

With the hefty price tag on the home team, a runline play will likely cash but taking the Fish straight up is a safer bet.

                Pick: Marlins

Sunday Night Baseball: Mets at Phillies
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies (+125, 9)

Shocker: Another visit by a New York team to ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.” But after going 12-4 since Tax Day, the Mets truly deserve to be featured nationally.

The Mets cruised to a 9-1 victory on Friday but the Phillies returned the favor Saturday with a 10-0 shallacking. Make no mistake, this is a heated rivalry.

"No matter what, anytime we play the Phillies, I think it means something," pitcher Mike Pelfrey said. "No matter who we're playing, we want to go out there and win. The fans will be into it."

                  Red-hot Metropolitans

New York entered this series with a half-game lead over the Phils in the NL East thanks to a seven-game winning streak – a streak that just so happened to start on Sunday night baseball a week ago against Atlanta.

The Mets just had a historic homestand by going 9-1. According to the team’s website, only twice in team history -- in 1969 and '88 -- have the Mets fared so well at home (they made the playoffs both of those years).

During that 10-game run, New York outscored its opposition a whopping 48-23 and swept both the Braves and Dodgers. Over the homestand, the Mets had a 2.09 ERA in 86 innings with three shutouts. The bullpen has a 2.45 ERA this season.

Hitting-wise, young first baseman Ike Davis has been a revelation, batting .306 with six RBIs in his first 12 major league games. And the offense took off when manager Jerry Manuel moved Jose Reyes to third in the lineup and dropped David Wright to No. 5 to help protect Jason Bay.

Remember that this team lost its first four series of the season for the first time since 1997. Every member of the team seems to point to better fundamentals as the key to the success.

“The thing we hope to do is to remain solid . . . because there are going to be periods where you’re not going to hit,” Manuel told reporters. “If fielding, baserunning, those types of things, if you can bring those things every day, I think it gives you a pretty good chance to win.”

                  Phils’ bullpen gets a boost

Philadelphia’s bullpen has not been a huge strength so far, especially fill-in closer Ryan Madson.

Madson gave up a run on two hits against the Giants on Wednesday afternoon while suffering his second blown save of the season. Entering the weekend he was 1-0 with four saves but had an ERA of 7.00. He has six blown saves in his last 20 opportunities as interim closer (dating to the start of 2009).

After Madson blew Wednesday’s game, he stormed through the dugout and kicked over a chair. The temper tantrum caused him to break his right big toe and forced the Phillies placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

Fortunately for Philly, Brad Lidge was activated on Friday. He had been on the DL since March 26 after recovering from offseason surgery on his right elbow.

Lidge had a 5.19 ERA in his minor-league rehab but threw seven scoreless innings over his final six outings.

Will the Phils get the 2008 unhittable Lidge or the guy who had a 7.21 ERA and blew 11 of his 42 save chances in 2009? The answer to that will probably determine if the Phillies will need to make a trade.

                  Ryno dehorned

Ryan Howard hasn’t earned a penny of his five-year, $125 million contract extension since the ink dried Monday.

The Phils first baseman is 5-for-19 in five games with just one homerun and one RBI to go along with seven strikeouts. Howard is hitting for a decent average this season (.275), but has totaled almost as many strikeouts (21) as hits (27).

The Philadelphia front office has received a plethora of criticism since penning Howard to the long-term deal. Critics ask how in the world is Howard worth more than Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols?

"The sabermetricians are welcome to have their opinions about our business,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “However, I choose to ignore their opinions."

                  On the bump

The Mets start co-ace Johan Santana tonight – you have to say co-ace now with how good Mike Pelfrey has been.

Santana (3-1, 2.08) held the Dodgers scoreless for six innings Tuesday, allowing four hits and striking out six. He has not allowed a home run over his past three starts and he has a 20:4 strikeouts to walks ratio in those 19.1 innings. Over the past three seasons, Santana is 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA against the Phillies, holding them to a .195 batting average.

He’ll want to keep the Howard in the park as Philly is 4-0 entering the weekend when the big lefty hits a home run, and the team went 26-13 under those circumstances last season. Howard and Chase Utley have hit three home runs each against Santana and Raul Ibanez is batting .350 in 40 career at-bats against him.

Philadelphia counters with 76-year-old Jamie Moyer. Okay, he’s only 47 but is the majors’ oldest player by far.

Moyer (2-2, 5.25 ERA) wasn’t very good last time out, allowing a season-high 10 hits and four runs in six innings against the Giants. He is 4-3 with a 4.45 ERA in the past three seasons against the Mets but has allowed 11 homers in 89 innings against them.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capping the calendar: May's best MLB pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The running of the Kentucky Derby each year means MLB enters its second month of play. And with it a handful of surprise teams take center stage.

The key to sustaining will be success, or lack of it, from the pitching staffs. Let’s zero in on pitchers that will look to keep their team in the race and those that may pull up before they hit the wire.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts during the month of May over last three seasons. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in May team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts with at least one start each May over the last three years.

                    May’s best pitchers:

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - 12-3

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - 10-5

Cole Hamels (Philadelphia Phillies) - 14-3

Scott Kazmir (Los Angeles Angels) - 10-5

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) - 12-6

Diasuke Matsusaka (Boston Red Sox) - 9-4

Vicente Padilla (Los Angeles Dodgers) - 11-4

Oliver Perez (New York Mets) - 8-4

Johan Santana (New York Mets) - 11-4

Todd Wellemeyer (San Francisco Giants) - 9-4

                    May’s bad pitchers:

Doug Davis (Milwaukee Brewers) - 4-10

Kyle Lohse (St. Louis Cardinals) - 5-11

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - 6-12

                    Carlos Silva (Chicago Cubs) 3-10

                      This Day in Baseball
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 2 in Baseball History...

1909 - Honus Wagner steals his way around the bases in the first inning of a game against the Cubs. It is the fourth time he has performed this feat, an N.L. record.

1917 - The Cubs lefthander Hippo Vaughn and righthander Fred Toney of the Reds toe the mound in Chicago for a one-of-a-kind game. At the end of nine innings, both pitchers have no-hitters. With one out in the top of the tenth and men on second and third, Jim Thorpe hits a swinging bunt near the mound. Vaughn picks it up and throws home, but catcher Art Wilson freezes the ball hits his chest protector, and Larry Kopf slides in safe for the only run. Fred Toney sets the Cubs down in order and has the fourth ten-inning no-hitter to date.

1939 - Lou Gehrig voluntarily benches himself for the good of the team. His consecutive-game string stops at 2,130. Babe Dahlgren, his replacement, has a home run and double as the Yankees rout Detroit 22-2.

1949 - In his first major league start, Don Newcombe shuts out Cincinnati 3-0.

1954 - Stan Musial hits five home runs in a doubleheader with the Giants in St. Louis. In attendance is eight-year-old Nate Colbert, who will eventually be the only other player in history to match this feat. The Cards win the first game 10-6 and the Giants win the nightcap 9-7.

1958 - In what nearly turns into a TV war, the Yankees threaten to broadcast their games nationwide if the N.L. goes ahead with its plans to allow other broadcasts, especially those of the Dodgers and Giants, into New York territory.

1988 - Reds manager Pete Rose is suspended for 30 days by N.L. president Bart Giamatti. This is the stiffest suspension ever levied against a manager for an on-field incident. On April 30 Rose shoved umpire Dave Pallone in the ninth inning of a 6-5 loss to the Mets, inciting a near riot among Cincinnati fans.
