Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-105, 5)

Nothing went as planned for the Vancouver Canucks in Monday night’s 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, who took a 2-1 lead in the series. Goalie Roberto Luongo struggled, getting pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 16 shots.

Luongo’s woes were even more evident on the penalty kill where the Kings have managed to score seven times on 12 opportunities during the series. Vancouver allowed three shorthanded goals on three consecutive penalties Monday night and never even managed to clear the puck once. The power plays lasted 31, 42 and 37 seconds respectively.

“We have to lay it all on the line when we’re killing penalties,” Luongo told The Province. “We have got to block shots and take some rebounds away. Obviously, we have to be able to kill penalties because we are not going to go penalty free every game.”

Vancouver also caught a tough break when Henrik Sedin’s goal late in the third period was disallowed following a controversial decision by the replay officials who felt Sedin kicked the puck in the net. If the call wasn’t problematic enough, NHL vice-president Mike Murphy added in a post-game interview on CBC that it would be nice to see the Kings win the Stanley Cup.

“I think it would be neat to see the Kings succeed and win a Stanley Cup because it would just be a tremendous amount for the Southern California market and the Kings’ franchise.”

Things just aren’t looking good for the Canucks.

      Pick: Kings

Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens (+175, 6)

No one knew what to expect from the Montreal Canadiens after they squandered a 4-1 lead to the Capitals in Game 2 Saturday night and suffered a 6-5 overtime loss. And they looked like they were on a mission during the first period of Game 3, outshooting the Capitals 10-7 and getting a number of good scoring opportunities.

But they weren’t able to get the puck past Semyon Varlamov and collapsed in the second period. The Caps scored three goals on six shots in a little over seven minutes and marched to a 5-1 victory at the Bell Centre.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak didn’t prove Alex Ovechkin wrong after the Capitals’ captain told reporters that Halak was so nervous in Game 2 he was shaking. Halak didn’t even last the entire game getting replaced by Carey Price after allowing four second-period markers.

Montreal has done a good job containing Ovechkin, who only had one shot on goal in Game 3, and shutting down Washington’s top-ranked power play, which was 0-for-7 Monday night (0-for-14 in the series).

“We (stink) right now,” Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told the Washington Post. “It’s the biggest… it’s the worst stretch we’ve gone through. I thought we had some really good looks and some really good chances. But none went in and you get frustrated.

“I’m sure we’ll get a goal on it – maybe not this series, but eventually, next year or something.”

If Price, the likely starter for Game 4, can do a better job in net and the Habs play a strong defensive game, they will squeak by the Caps.

      Pick: Canadiens

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Washington Nationals (-105, 9)

Somber news echoed across the baseball world Tuesday as Rockies team president, Keli McGregor, was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 48.

"It's difficult, it really is. ... We have a lot of Christian guys on this ballclub, guys that believe. Keli was a Christian man," hitting coach Don Baylor said. "At 48 years old, you're still asking why. But it's not for us to say why; guys go out and play for him, the legacy of the organization is what you put on your back. You want to do exactly what Keli wanted to do and that's put this organization first."

Colorado did not hold any heavy hearts on Tuesday, coming right out of the gate to score 10 runs against Washington in the first three innings of play.

The Nats have only beaten Colorado once in their last 11 meetings. Expect the Rocks to continue to ride the momentum of playing for their deceased team member.

                Pick: Rockies

Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox (-200, 8.5)

The BoSox have had trouble producing runs this season and their offensive struggles aren’t going to get any better. Boston placed outfielders Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury on the 15-day DL Tuesday.

"It's certainly not the time for excuses or sugarcoating it," said GM Theo Epstein. "We've played bad baseball. It's a bad stretch of play, and when you do that at the start of the season, it looks even worse. I don't think this is about perception or optics. It's just what it is. It's been bad baseball. We haven't played well.”

Red Sox manager Terry Francona added that his players are going to have to “step up” and hit better than .250 to snap the slide.

Matt Harrison will take the mound for Texas on Wednesday and he has been stellar in his two starts this season (1.38 ERA, two walks), but has received little run support.

Nine of the last 11 games in this series have gone under the posted total. This total could get up to 9 but look for the pitchers to dominate this matchup.

                Pick: Under

Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic [TNT | 7:00 PM ET]

Bobcats: Charlotte had a very rude awakening against the Magic in Game 1 of their best of 7 series. Charlotte was down 16 at the half, before coming back to only lose by 9 PTS and earn the ATS victory. The Bobcats will look to the 2nd half, where they outscored the Magic by 7 PTS to build their confidence. The Bobcats were led by the trio of F Stephen Jackson, G Raymond Felton, and F Gerald Wallace. This trio had 62 of the Bobcats 89 total PTS, as no other Bobcat player had more than 6 PTS. Charlotte is 44-39 SU and 45-37-1 ATS overall this season. The Bobcats have been atrocious on the road this season, going 13-29 SU away from home. Charlotte is 22-19-1 ATS on the road this season, a much better record than their SU record away from home. The Bobcats are 24-18 ATS as the listed underdog this season, including 4-3 ATS as a road underdog between 6.5 and 9 PTS. Charlotte plays their best baskeball against teams in their own division, as they are an impressive 12-4 ATS in this specific scenario. The Bobcats are 27-18 ATS this season against teams that average more than 99 PPG this.

Bobcats are 6-0 ATS last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Under is 7-0-1 last 8 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - F Stephen Jackson (knee) is probable.
C Alexis Ajinca (hand) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 82

Magic (-9, O/U 186): Orlando began defense of their Eastern Conference Championship with a solid Game 1 win against the Bobcats. PG Jameer Nelson had 32 PTS, and was one of 5 Magic players in double figures. The Magic made 13 three pointers in Game 1, enabling the Magic to be up 16 PTS at the half. Orlando has held the Bobcats under 90 PTS in 3 of their 5 meetings this season. The 89 PTS the Magic allowed was a strong positive sign for Orlando, as their defense had struggled down the stretch of the regular season. Orlando is 60-23 SU and 46-35-2 ATS overall this season. The Magic are an impressive 35-7 SU and 23-17-2 ATS in home games this season. Orlando was an impressive 22-12 ATS during the 2nd half of the regular season. The Magic are 40-30 ATS as the listed favorite this season, including 3-4 ATS as a favorite between 6.5 and 9 PTS. C Dwight Howard had 9 blocks in Game 1, a fitting stat considering he was just named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Magic are 0-4 ATS last 4 playoff games as a favorite.
Under is 9-3-1 last 13 playoff games as a favorite.

                    None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks [TNT | 9:30 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio is going to need to figure out the Mavericks in a hurry, otherwise their season is going to be over very soon. San Antonio is only 1-4 both SU and ATS against Dallas this year, with their lone win coming in their first matchup in November. The Spurs have to be especially frustrated after their Game 1 loss, because they shot .50% from the field. Their ultimate undoing was the amount of fouls them committed, as Dallas attempted 20 more free throws than they did. Guards Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker and F Tim Duncan combined for 71 of the Spurs 94 total PTS. The Spurs are 50-33 SU and 44-38-1 ATS overall this season. The Spurs are a dead even 21-21 SU and 19-22-1 ATS on the road this season. San Antonio also happens to be an even 10-10 ATS as the listed underdog this season, including 6-4 ATS as the listed road underdog between 3.5 and 6 PTS. The Spurs were ultimately successful this season because of their bench play. San Antonio had so many injuries this season that several role players received extended playing time. Unfortunately, the Spurs bench only totaled 9 PTS outside of Tony Parker in Game 1.

Spurs are 0-5 ATS last 5 playoff games as an underdog.
Under is 7-1-1 last 9 games as a road underdog up to 4.5 points.

Key Injuries - G George Hill (ankle) is questionable.
G Malik Hairston (ankle) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 98 (Side of the Day)

Mavericks (-3.5, O/U 194.5): Dallas was very consistent and methodical in their Game 1 win over their bitter in state rival. Many experts consider the Mavericks a solid sleeper candidate to make it out of the West and into the NBA Finals. Forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler proved to be a great 1-2 punch in the playoffs. Nowitzki had 36 PTS in Game 1, with his efficient shooting the talk of the game. Nowitzki was 12-14 from the field, and a perfect 12-12 from the charity stripe. Butler had 22 PTS, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals in his first playoff game with Dallas. Including their final 5 games of the regular season, the Mavericks are now 6-0 both SU and ATS in their past 6 games. Dallas continues to win with defense, as they've held 5 of their past 6 opponents under 100 PTS. The Mavericks are 56-27 SU and 38-44-1 ATS overall this season. Dallas is 29-13 SU and 11-29-2 ATS in home contests this season. The Mavericks are only 25-34 ATS as the listed favorite, including 3-9 ATS as a home favorite between 3.5 and 6 PTS. Dallas is 7-3 ATS this season after having 2 days off.

Mavs are 5-0 ATS last 5 games as a favorite.
Under is 8-2 last 10 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.

Key Injuries - F Tim Thomas (personal) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 96

                      Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 21, 2010 from Len Berman.

                      1. Quick Hits

Today could be the day that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is punished by the NFL for his lousy conduct. Then the debate will begin if race is a factor as compared with other suspensions.
The Jets have signed Miami linebacker Jason Taylor. Taylor has spent a good part of his career trashing Jets fans.
The world's top woman golfer, 28-year-old Lorena Ochoa, announces her retirement.
The 48-year old president of the Colorado Rockies, Keli McGregor was found dead of natural causes.
The former president of the IOC, Juan Antonio Samaranch, is dead at the age of 89.
Parents, let your kids grow up to become tennis players. Wimbledon champs will earn a cool one million pounds ($1.54-million) this year, each runner-up will receive half a million ($770-thousand).

                      2. While I Was Gone

Miss me? The Top 5 returns from "spring break" today. Four subscribers wondered what happened to my emails? (What a ringing endorsement!) And two subscribers told me about the Phillies fan who was accused of throwing up on an 11 year old girl. They've dubbed him "Pukemon." (Glad to see you've grasped the journalistic level of the Top 5.) The best story might have been the Mets and Cards playing a 20 inning game where Fox announcer, 42-year old Kenny Albert, didn't go to the bathroom the entire game. Get back to me in a few years Kenny. If you can duplicate that, we'll transfer the nickname "Iron Horse" to you.

                      3. Boo-ston

What, they booed the Red Sox in Boston? Shocking. While the Fenway faithful was emptying their lungs at their heroes, fans were staying away in droves in Washington and Toronto. Maybe a Red Sox fan should try being a National or Blue Jay fan? There's more to boo, and the players have a decent chance of hearing your individual complaint.

                      4. The Hot Seat

It must be fun sitting on the hot seat. If the Mets win, Jerry Manuel is safe. If the Mets lose, Bobby Valentine's name gets shouted all over the airwaves. I thought Lou Piniella's take was interesting. The once fired Yankee manager opined that current Yankee manager Joe Girardi has no idea how lucky he is that George Steinbrenner isn't running the show. No kidding. If George were still in control somebody would have been fired, the pitching coach, the manager or the clubhouse attendant, after the first two Javy Vasquez starts.

                      5. What, No Spooning?

Last week, on Garry Kasparov's 47th birthday, I mused is a chess player an athlete? Well, according to subscriber Richard L. "Are you kidding? A chess player must know how to block, attack, defend, skewer, check, double check, pin and fork...and all while the clock is ticking. Dr. Leroy Dubeck, a professor at Temple University, did a physiologic study on the energy expended playing a variety of sports and found chess as exhausting as a 3 minute round of boxing, a set of tennis, or running some distance. Chess players are some of the best conditioned athletes I know."
My only response, can it really be a sport if "fork" is part of the strategy?
But thanks for the reality check, mate.

Happy Birthday: Former Mets reliever Jesse Orosco, who was on the mound when they clinched the 1986 World Series. 53.
Bonus Birthday: Don't Cry For Me Argentina. Actress Patti LuPone. 61.

Today in Sports: It rained in Southern California. A Dodgers game gets rained out for the first time since the team moved there in 1958. 1967.
Bonus Event: Geraldo Rivera opened up Al Capone's vault live on television. It was basically empty. 1986.
