    Daily Sports Roundup: April 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks host the Spurs in the NBA playoffs, the Phillies take on the Braves, and the Capitals battle with the Canadiens in NHL playoff action.

    Tipping off on the hardwood...

Two games are on tonight’s NBA playoff schedule: Dallas meets San Antonio in Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round series, while Orlando tips off with Charlotte in the second game of their Eastern Conference first-round set. The Mavs won the series opener 100-94 on Sunday, as they covered as 4-point favorites against the Spurs. Dirk Nowitzki had 36 points and seven rebounds for Dallas, which improved to 4-1 SU and ATS this season against San Antonio. The Mavericks are 3.5-point chalk for tonight’s game, with the total set at 194.5 points.

    Meeting up on the diamond...

Action in the National League includes San Francisco at San Diego, Los Angeles at Cincinnati, Chicago at New York, St. Louis at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. Roy Halladay (3-0, 1.12 ERA) takes the ball for the Phillies in their matchup with the Braves, who send Tim Hudson (1-0, 2.84 ERA) to the hill at Turner Field tonight. Atlanta should have its hands full with Halladay, one of the best pitchers in the game for the better part of the last decade. Brought to Philadelphia from Toronto in an offseason trade, Halladay has 21 strikeouts and only two walks in 24 innings pitched this season.

Over in the American League, tonight’s schedule features Texas at Boston, Tampa Bay at Chicago, Detroit at Los Angeles, New York at Oakland, and Baltimore at Seattle. It’ll be a battle of ace pitchers at Safeco Field between the Orioles and Mariners, with Baltimore’s Kevin Millwood (0-2, 2.89 ERA) matching up with Felix Hernandez (1-0, 3.10 ERA) for Seattle. Both righthanders have started the season well, even if Millwood remains winless with his new team. Millwood allowed three runs over six innings in the Orioles’ 4-2 loss at Oakland last Friday, and it wasn’t enough for Baltimore to cash as +140 underdogs.

Taking a trip around the rink...

The NHL playoffs continue with three games tonight: Buffalo at Boston, Washington at Montreal, and Vancouver at Los Angeles. The Sabres, Canadiens, and Canucks are all looking to avoid going down 3-1 in their respective best-of-seven first-round series, and it’s Montreal that has the toughest task.

The Habs were no match for the Caps in Monday night’s Game 3 at the Bell Centre, as Washington rolled to a 5-1 victory as -185 favorites. Montreal needs a better performance from goaltender Jaroslav Halak, who was pulled after giving up three unanswered goals in the second period in Game 2. Carey Price came on in relief of Halak, and promptly allowed a marker to Alex Ovechkin to put the game out of reach for the Canadiens.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Dodgers-Reds game has dropped a half run from its opener and now stands at 8.5. L.A. had played to the over in 9-of-10 heading into Tuesday.

Most sportsbooks are working with a total of 9 in the Cardinals-Diamondbacks matchup after opening the number at 8.5. Prior to Tuesday’s affair, the last four games in this series had gone under.

      Weather report

The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain in the Giants-Padres matchup on Wednesday. A 17 mph wind will be blowing directly across the diamond.

There is a 60 percent chance of precipitation for the Rockies-Nationals game.

The Angels and Tigers could be hitting some long balls out to right field with wind expected to blow out at 16 mph in Anaheim on Wednesday. A 50 percent chance of rain could produce sloppy field conditions.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain during the Yankees-A’s affair in Oakland.

      Who’s hot

The Bruins are 5-1 SU in their last six games, which includes three wins over Buffalo.

Dallas is 6-0 ATS in its last six games.

The Indians had won four straight going into Tuesday, earning 4.62 units on the moneyline.

      Who’s not

Montreal is 3-7 SU in its last 10 games, dropping nearly four units on the moneyline.

The Reds were 0-5 SU in their last five going into Tuesday.

Arizona has lost five straight and only covered the runline once during that streak.

      Key stat

3.85 – Average runs per game for the Boston Red Sox through 13 games this season. Injuries to key players have contributed to this (see below).

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Red Sox are going to be short-handed in the outfield for awhile. Boston placed both Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Cameron is dealing with an abdominal muscle tear while Ellsbury has missed multiple games because of bruised ribs. Boston called up Josh Reddick from Triple-A and he got the start in center on Tuesday while utility player Bill Hall has played outfield in some games.

      Game of the Day

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks (-3.5, 194.5)

      Notable quotable

"I'm sorry he doesn't appreciate Cleveland. My family has enjoyed it. We don't want him to enjoy the city too much, and I think we're doing our job in Cleveland if he's not enjoying his time here."

-- Cavs forward Anthony Parker commented about Chicago center Joakim Noah who said that “Cleveland sucks.”

      Tips and notes

      - Last week, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver witnessed a man commit suicide. Fellow pitcher Matt Palmer said Weaver “saw him land” on the concrete after the man jumped from the roof of their hotel building. In his next start after the incident, Weaver pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight in the win. While seeing a man fall to his death could negatively affect some, perhaps it helped Weaver as he may have a different outlook on life and pitching. The Angels are -165 favorites on Wednesday.

      - Despite being the reigning AL Cy Young winner, Zack Greinke is not a pitcher bettors should be looking to back right now. After his last start where he walked five in five innings of losing effort, Greinke said, "I think my mind is just not right on how to pitch” and that his “game plan has been wrong.” Greinke and the Royals are listed at -105 versus Toronto.

      - The Mavericks are one of the deepest teams in the league but also one of the oldest teams in the league. A bettor could perceive that the Mavs might get fatigued during a game or see the age as an advantage because of experience. Shawn Marion sides with the latter saying, “the experience will help us.” Three of Dallas’ five starters played 40 minutes or more on Sunday but two full days of rest should be enough for those old legs to recoup.

        Wednesday six-pack

-- Guy made half-court shot at the Laker game, won a cool $235,000, as part of a promotion with the Mirage Hotel.

        -- Angels haven't had a home rainout since 1995.

-- Padres won fifth game in row, beating Giants 1-0 despite getting only one hit (Chase Headley). San Diego is pitching very well.

-- Jason Kendall, who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag with the A's, is hitting .360 so far this season in Kansas City. Go figure.

-- Edwar Ramirez is the only Oakland player who wasn't born in the United States; every other major league team has at least five guys who were born in other countries.

-- Dan Haren didn't pitch well last night (allowed seven runs in six IP) but he had four hits in his 9-7 win and is now hitting .455.

Wednesday's List of 13: Initial impressions of '10 NFL schedule (we'll have more schedule tidbits in this space tomorrow)

        13) Steelers aren't on national TV until Halloween night, their 7th game of season; their bye is in Week 5, so conspiracy theorists will say that Ben Roethlisberger is getting suspended either four or six games. Steelers play the Ravens in Week 4, so thats a tough game to win with a backup QB.

        12) Eagles/Giants have their byes in Week 8; Redskins have theirs a week later, but Dallas has a Week 4 bye, usually thought to be too early, unless you get saddled with lot of early injuries. With Mike Shanahan coaching Washington, there are no easy outs in the NFC East.

        11) I wonder if Redskins were booked for three primetime games before they traded for Donovan McNabb? Eagles @ Redskins is a primetime TV game in Week 10. McNabb goes back to Philly in Week 4.

        10) All sixteen games the last week of the season are divisional matchups.

        9) Chicago doesn't play a divisional road game until December, which is OK, since two of those three games are in domes anyway.

        8) Saints are playing on Thanksgiving for first time, against the team that gave them their first loss last season, the Cowboys. New England plays in Detroit earlier that day; Cincinnati-Jets is the NFL Network nightcap.

        7) 49ers have four primetime games, including two in last six weeks of the season; think the NFL will be disappointed by that; NFC West is going to be a wild scramble of mediocre teams. Not sold at all on the Niners.

        6) Cowboys at Cardinals on Christmas night is a potentially fun game.

        5) Giants don't play a divisional game until Week 7, and don't play rival Washington until December, when they play the Redskins twice.

        4) Brett Favre's Vikings visit Lambeau on October 24. Anyone who does not think Favre is playing this season is delusional. Minnesota is letting him dictate everything, which is just what Favre wanted.

        3) Favre visits his other old team, the Jets, October 11 in primetime, so the league thinks he's coming back, and they're usually right, aren't they?

        2) Packers have one home game between November 7 and December 26, playing four of five games after their bye on the road.

By the way, its funny that neither Jerry Jones or the Giants have sold the naming rights to their ridiculously expensive new stadiums. PSL Stadium is what we're going to call the stadium in the Jersey swamp.

        1) Tampa Bay traded Byron Leftwich to Pittsburgh Wednesday; there's a great chance that Leftwich will be the Steelers' QB when they visit the Buccaneers in Week 3, so guess Bucs aren't too high on Leftwich. Tampa Bay plays 14 1:00 games this year-- NFL has low expectations for them.

                Wednesday, April 21

Orlando ran out to 59-43 halftime lead, beat Bobcats 98-89 in Game 1, as Magic made 13-30 from arc, were +7 in turnovers (14-7) and Howard blocked nine shots. Charlotte made just 3-12 from arc, but their bench had its moments; Chandler was +12 in just 14:28 on court (Hornets were -21 in 33:32 with him on bemch). Bobcats were just 3-12 from arc.

Mavericks were 25-34 from line in Game 1, Spurs just 12-14 in 100-94 Game 1 win (-5); Nowitzki was 12-14 from floor in Mavs' fourth series win row over Spurs. Bonner was +7 in 19:42, Parker +3 in 34:14 for the Spurs. Four of last five series games stayed under total. Interesting to see if Spurs can break thru on this court (losses by 5-7-6 this season).

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks (-3.5, 194.5)

                    Dirk-a-licious

Dirk Nowitzki has enjoyed plenty of past success against the San Antonio Spurs. Last year, Dirk was the difference maker in the Mavs’ Game 5 series clincher in their opening-round matchup against the Spurs, pouring in 31 points.

In four regular season games against San Antonio this year, Nowitzki averaged 28.8 points and 8.5 rebounds. Dallas went 3-1 SU and ATS in those ballgames.

But none of those recent performances were as good as his showing against San Antonio in Game 1. Nowitzki was near perfect, going 12-of-14 from the floor, 12-of-12 from the free-throw line and finished with a game-high 36 points.

Popovich rotated defenders at Nowitzki, giving Antonio McDyess, Matt Bonner, Richard Jefferson and Keith Bogans the opportunity to slow down Dallas’s superstar. None of them had any success.

“We tried a lot of different things and he beat them all,” Spurs head coach Greg Popovich told reporters.

“I’m going to take whatever they give me,” Nowitzki responded.

                    Hack-A- Dampier

The Spurs lack of answers for Nowitzki created a unique scenario in the final minutes of a tight game Sunday. Coach Popovich was an originator of the Hack-A-Shaq more than a decade ago, forcing Shaquille O’Neal to the free-throw line with a series of late-game intentional fouls. O’Neal’s struggles from the free-throw line are well documented.

Frustrated with his team’s inability to stop Nowitzki, Popovich utilized a Hack-A-Dampier strategy in the latter stages of Game 1, much to the chagrin of under bettors. On three consecutive possessions, Popovich instructed Roger Mason Jr. to foul Mavs center Erick Dampier, a 60 percent foul shooter this year, sending him to the free-throw line.

“We hoped (Dampier) would miss free throws rather than Dirk killing us the way he was,” Popovich told the media.

The strategy worked. Dampier made only five of his 12 foul shots for the game.

                    After the Big Three

San Antonio’s big three – Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili – all enjoyed strong Game 1 performances, combining for 71 points. As a trio, they shot well over 50 percent from the floor, hitting 29 of their 52 shot attempts.

But the rest of the Spurs team combined to produce a grand total of 10 made baskets and two free-throw attempts. The only San Antonio role player to have any sort of impact was center Antonio McDyess, with 10 points and eight boards in 24 minutes of action.

Spurs head coach Greg Popovich wasn’t shy about criticizing his team in his post-game comments to reporters. Basically, Pop called out his entire bench.

“I thought we had a lot of guys who played like dogs,” he said.

                    Mavs series dominance

Dallas won three of the four regular-season meetings with the Spurs this year, both SU and ATS. The Mavs also won and covered Game 1 of this series.

This is nothing new. The Mavs bounced the Spurs out of the first round of the playoffs last year, beating San Antonio 4-1 and covering the spread in all four victories.

These two teams’ previous playoff matchup was also a Mavs’ victory. When Dallas went to the NBA Finals in 2006, it won a tightly-contested series with an overtime win at San Antonio in Game 7. It’s surely worth noting that Nowitzki was the difference maker in that game as well, pouring in 37 points.

                    One key injury

Both teams enter Wednesday’s game relatively healthy. The only potential impact injury is on the San Antonio side, with starting point guard George Hill suffering a bad ankle. Hill was a difference maker for the Spurs all year long, helping Popovich withstand injuries to both Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

Through 28 games in February and March, Hill averaged more than 16 points per game, while dishing nearly four assists per contest. But Hill rolled his ankle in early April, missing four games.

Since his return to the floor, he has been a non-factor. He’s averaged just four points and one assist per game in three contests since rejoining the rotation. While Hill is expected to start Game 2, his effectiveness is another question entirely.

                    Early line moves

The wiseguy money has come in on San Antonio and the over in Game 2. The Spurs opened as 4-point underdogs and have gone down to +3.5 from the early wagers. The total has ticked up slightly from an opener of 194 to the current number of 194.5.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks (-3.5, 194.5)

Spurs coach Greg Popovich employed a Hack-a-Shaq tactic on Dallas center Erik Dampier on Sunday but it didn’t work out too well.

"We hoped he would miss free throws rather than Dirk killing us the way he was," Popovich said.

Damp went 5-for-12 from the free throw line, but the backbreaker was Dirk Nowitzki connecting on all but two of his 14 shots on the night and posting a game-high 36 points.

Tim Duncan got absolutely no help from his role players outside of Manu Ginobili as the other three games starters (Jefferson, McDyess, Hill) combined to score 14 points.

"We didn't play focused enough," Duncan said. "We just weren't there all night."

Caron Butler (22 points) and Brendan Haywood (10 points, 6 rebounds) were amped up playing in their first playoff series they actually have a chance to advance in and you can expect another raucous atmosphere in Big D on Wednesday.

                      Pick: Mavericks

Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic (-9, 186)

Larry Brown’s gameplan is simple: shut down Dwight Howard and make the remaining Magic players beat them.

Jameer Nelson was happy to oblige in Game 1, posting 32 points on 10-of-18 shooting. But don’t expect the Bobcats to deviate from the plan of attacking Howard in hopes of drawing fouls and making him earn points at the charity stripe.

"He's a shot blocker. We're a team that attacks the rim. You put those two together, somebody has to win,” Gerald Wallace said. “We're going to keep going at him and we're going to attack him. We don't have anybody on this team that's afraid to attack the basket and go at him. We're not going to just let him think he's the bully he's the factor up under the basket, because he's not.”

Howard was limited to five points and made one basket from the free low line in the first game of the series. Superman was frustrated into taking some bad shots and getting called for some ill-advised fouls.

An expected abundance of fouls will keep the clock from running which should equate to more points in this matchup.

                      Pick: Over

The Canucks look to rebound from their 5-3 loss in Game 3 and build on their 5-0 record in their last 5 games after allowing 5 goals or more in the previous game.
