    Daily Sports Roundup: April 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cavs return to the court for Game 2 vs. the Bulls, the Caps and Habs clash in Game 3 and the Red Sox and Rays finish off a four-game set.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA playoffs continue on Monday with only two games on the schedule: Chicago at Cleveland and Utah at Denver.

The Cavaliers rolled over the Bulls in Game 1 with a 96-83 victory as an 11.5-point favorite. LeBron James led the way with 26 points and six rebounds, while Shaquille O’Neal poured in 12 points in his first game since February.

The Nuggets started off their series against Utah with a 126-113 win as a 6-point favorite on Saturday night. Carmelo Anthony carried the Nuggets with a game-high 42 points, and the Jazz will need to find a way to slow him down to get back in the series.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

In the American League on Monday there are four games on tap with Kansas City at Toronto, Detroit at the Angels, Baltimore at Seattle and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays and Red Sox finish off a four-game series with Jeff Niemann (0-0, 3.24) taking on John Lackey (1-0, 1.42). Niemann has thrown two no-decisions versus Baltimore this season. He went seven innings and allowed three runs in his last start after his season debut was cut short after he took a line drive off his shoulder. Lackey earned his first win of the season in his last start after holding Minnesota to two runs on seven hits over 6 2-3 innings.

Over in the National League on Monday there are four games on the schedule with Colorado at Washington, the Cubs at the Mets, San Francisco at San Diego and St. Louis at Arizona. Brad Penny (1-0, 0.64) gets the call for the Cardinals, while Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 4.09) gets the ball for the Diamondbacks. Penny stymied the Astros in his last start, limiting them to one unearned run in seven innings. Lopez was lit up by the Dodgers last time out, giving up five runs on 11 hits in five innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL playoffs continue Monday with three games: Boston at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Vancouver, and Montreal at Washington. Boston, Los Angeles and Washington all won on Saturday to tie all three series 1-1. The Capitals knocked off the Canadiens 6-5 in overtime after coming back from down 4-1. Backstrom netted the OT winner to finish off a four-point night with three goals and an assist, while Alex Ovechkin also had four points with a goal and three assists. Semyon Varlamov took over for Jose Theodore and made 19 saves, after Theodore allowed two goals on Montreal’s first two shots of the game. Jaroslav Halak stopped 31-of-37 shots in the loss.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers: The Cavs opened as 11-point favorites and that number has dropped to 10.5 at most shops.

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets: The total opened at 213 and has fallen to as low as 212.5 at most books.

      Who's hot

Chicago Bulls are 7-2 ATS in their last nine on road.

Denver Nuggets are 7-0-2 ATS in last nine vs. Utah Jazz.

Boston Bruins are 4-1 in their last five.

Tampa Bay Rays are 6-0 on the road this season.

      Who's not

Cleveland Cavaliers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11.

Utah Jazz are 2-5 ATS in their last seven.

Montreal Canadiens are 1-4 in their last five.

      Key stats

84 - Number of years since the New York Yankees won their first four series to start a season, which they did by sweeping Texas over the weekend. Not since 1926, when Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were in the lineup, have the Bronx Bombers had such a hot start.

584 - Career home runs hit by Alex Rodriguez, who passed Mark McGwire for eighth on the all-time list Saturday. McGwire was 38 when he hit his last one and No. 7 Frank Robinson was 40 when he hit his 586th. A-Rod is 34.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Buffalo Sabres winger and leading scorer Thomas Vanek left Saturday's game against the Boston Bruins with a foot injury and is doubtful for tonight's Game 3. Vanek has scored 23 goals and 25 assists this season, so his absence could be huge in a series that has been decided by two goals or less in the last eight meetings.

      Game of the day

      Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers

      Notable quotable

"Certainly. That's a gift to the NBA charities. NBA Cares, they really care a lot about me. ... I got to get out of here before I start something else."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson when asked if the $70,000 in fines he has paid for recent comments about NBA officials can be used as a tax write-off.

      Tips and notes

Saturday night's 20-inning marathon between the Mets and Cardinals could have lasting effects into the first part of the week as both teams depleted their bullpens and dugouts. Forty-six of the team's combined 50 eligible players in the game. The Cards got the worst end of the deal, taking the loss and traveling to Arizona after a late game Sunday.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis may finally be recapturing the promise of his youth. Despite being a total flop since signing with the Tigers in 2008 and earning no-decisions in his first two starts this season, Willis has shown flashes the "D-Train" of old and signs of an older, mentally tougher pitcher. He and the Tigers can be had at a bargain price of +150 for tonight's game against the Angels.

Rain washed out both NASCAR races at Texas Motorspeedway this weekend, setting up a doubleheader for fans and for 15 drivers who will compete in the noon Sprint Cup Series and 5 p.m. Nationwide Series races. That's a total of 800 miles in one day, which is enough to make the toughest trucker find a rest stop. It's a good time to take a shot on a Nationwide regular to upstage the big-name double-dippers.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Bulls at Cavaliers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers (-10.5, 191)

The Cavs try to protect home court advantage in Game 2 of the series. Cleveland raced out to a 22-point lead in the opening quarter, watched the Bulls cut the deficit to seven points, before posting a 96-83 win on Saturday.

          One down, 15 to go

The Cavs have one goal in mind after reaching the Eastern Conference finals last year. They gave LeBron James help by adding some pieces with a title in mind including Shaquille O'Neal, Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker.

"We have the look of a champion," Cleveland's LeBron James said after Saturday's win.

Said Shaq: "Everyone knows it's the first team to 16 wins."

          It's over, already

The Cavs have a 10-game winning streak in the first two rounds of the playoffs and they've never lost a best-of-7 series after winning Game 1.

The Cavs are 36-6 at home this season and two of the losses came as they rested players down the stretch after they had clinched home court in the playoffs. They are only 20-21-1 ATS at home and are typically double-digit favorites in Cleveland.

Cleveland is once again a double-digit fave on Monday. The Cavs have given 10 or more points 28 times this year and are 12-16 ATS.

In those games they are 26-2 SU, but one of the losses was against the Bulls very early in the regular season.

The Bulls are the first team in eight years to reach the playoffs despite owning a 10-game losing streak during the season.

          Bullevable hope?

Chicago entered Game 1 claiming it would shock the world but there wasn’t anything overly shocking about Cleveland’s double-digit win.

Still, the Cleveland Plain Dealer dished out several reasons why the Bulls should feel optimistic about their chances. After Cleveland jumped out to a 32-18 lead, the Bulls actually out-scored the Cavs the rest of the way.

The Bulls also won the rebounding battle in the second half and their defensive strategy of falling back into the paint and letting the Cavs’ shooters bomb from beyond the arc worked out well. (Cleveland shot 26.1 percent from 3-point land).

''We can't get down on this game,'' Joakim Noah told the Chicago Sun-Times. ''We have to stay confident. We missed a lot of shots today. We just have to keep fighting.''

          Season's meetings

There are few, if any, who believe the Bulls can win this series. They may, however, be able to beat the spread.

Derrick Rose seems to be the only Bull capable of creating havoc. He scored 28 points in Game 1 but Cavs coach Mike Brown is not concerned. He feels that if Cleveland shuts down the rest of the Bulls, Rose could have his points and the Cavs will remain in control. It took Rose 28 shots to score his 28 on Saturday and he seemed to avoid contact and got to the free-throw line just twice.

But it's about the spread, King

After the game, James said: “It’s not about winning by 20 or 30. At the end of the day, we won by 13 points. We kept them in the game because we had 18 turnovers. About 13 of them were unforced.”

Lack of a killer instinct cost them in last year's playoffs. In Game 1, it nearly cost their backers the spread but the game was never truly in doubt.

          Trend-setting

Five of the past six meetings between these two teams have gone under. The Bulls have gone under four straight and in seven of their last nine contests.

The Bulls are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games following a SU loss.

The Cavs are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 playoff games as a favorite. The Cavs are 13-3 in their last 16 conference quarterfinal games.

          Injury report

O'Neal played 24 minutes in the opener and looked rejuvenated. He scored 12 points and amassed five rebounds, four assists and three blocks. He seems fully recovered from thumb surgery.

Shaq dropped 20 pounds during his rehab by watching his diet and swimming. He made a big splash in Game 1.

Aside from lightly-used Cleveland forward Danny Green (questionable, ankle), both teams are healthy.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets (-7, 212.5)

We recently did a little slideshow on X-Factors in the playoffs. We owe an apology to J.R. Smith.

The Nuggets guard is immensely talented and instant offense when his shot is falling. But Smith can also be a tad selfish and force his shot rather than look for the open teammate. Denver backers saw the good J.R. on Saturday.

Smith scored 18 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Nuggets pull away from the Jazz in Game 1 of their playoff series.

"We need that," Carmelo Anthony, who had a game-high 42 points, told the Associated Press about Smith’s performance. "I know I said that earlier our team's success falls on me, but J.R.'s a big part of what we do and how far we go. We need him to play the way he played -- under control."

Meanwhile the Jazz received more bad news on the injury front. Already missing Andrei Kirilenko, Utah starting center Mehmet Okur didn’t play in the second half after re-injuring his left Achilles’ tendon.

“I felt something pop,” Okur said after the game.

That’s not good news for Jazz backers. Without Kirilenko and Okur, the Jazz are down two of their better shot blockers.

            Pick: Over

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins (-135, 5)

What happens when an offensively challenged club loses its top sniper? The Buffalo Sabres are about to find out.

Buffalo winger Thomas Vanek left in the first period of Game 2 against the Bruins after he took a slash to his leg and crashed into the boards.

The Sabres aren’t giving any details about the extent of the injury but if you were watching the game you didn’t need a doctor’s diagnosis. Vanek struggled to put any weight on the leg and crumbled while trying to get to the bench.

"Our key offensive guys without Thomas there are going to have to be the guys to make the big plays," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff told the Buffalo News. "You have to have some depth to that scoring but at the same time, the key guys have to make a difference."

Well, that’s great and all but you can’t ask skill-less hacks like Mike Grier to start cashing in at the offensive end. (Grier replaced Vanek’s spot on Buffalo’s No. 1 line).

No, the best bet is on a low-scoring game like the one bettors saw in Game 1. Sure the Bruins scored five goals on Saturday, but two of those goals came from a defenseman and two others came from underachiever Michael Ryder.

Expect Ryan Miller to bounce back with a big effort and Buffalo to execute a conservative game plan.

                Pick: Under

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (+100, 5)

The Los Angeles Kings have scored five goals in the first two games in their opening round playoff series against the Canucks. Four of those markers came with a man advantage, including Game 2’s overtime winner.

“It was the wrong call,” Canucks bench boss Alain Vigneault told the Vancouver Sun after the loss.

Vigneault’s boys were called for too many men on the ice because the puck hit a Vancouver player heading for the bench. It wasn’t any fluke either. Los Angeles defenseman Scuderi took advantage of the opportunity.

“That's a veteran player who's been through the playoffs and he recognized the situation," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "The puck was on his stick, he knew there were too many men and he puts it right back to their bench. That's as good a read that was made maybe all night long by anybody on the ice.”

Even if the Canucks have a beef with the cheeky overtime call, they can’t defend all the other stupid penalties they’ve taken in this series.

“It's inexcusable,” Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler told reporters after the game. “We're taking a lot of undisciplined penalties. If we're going to win this series, we're going to have to stay out of the box.”

A tiger doesn’t change its stripes. Vancouver was one of the most penalized team during the regular season.

                Pick: Over

The St. Louis Cardinals battled for almost seven hours, stranded 22 baserunners and came out on the losing end of a disheartening 20-inning marathon against the New York Mets on Saturday.

After a late game Sunday, the Cards have to carry the baggage on a redeye to Arizona for a game against the Diamondbacks, but St. Louis skipper Tony LaRussa isn't worried about a hangover.

"The outcome was disappointing but the heart that the club showed was amazing," La Russa said after the 2-1 loss. "I give them a standing ovation."

The Cards depleted its bullpen but they trot out a real snake-handler in Brad Penny, who is 9-3 all-time against D-backs. Penny has strung together two straight solid starts and is 1-0 with a minuscule 0.64 ERA.

Diamondbacks starter Rodrigo Lopez was knocked around by the Dodgers in his last outing, allowing five runs - four earned - on 11 hits in five innings.

The Cards may not be fresh, but they should get enough offense and mileage out of Penny to rattle the D-backs.

                  Pick: Cardinals

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-165, 9)

It's never easy to beat a team four times in a row on the road, especially when that team is the Boston Red Sox and the fourth game falls on Patriots Day.

But that's what the Tampa Bay Rays will try to do in today's 11 a.m. special at Fenway Park. They are looking to tie the club record for their seventh consecutive road victory.

"We'll be ready," said Tampa Bay's B.J. Upton. "It doesn't matter what time the game is, whether it's midnight or 11 o'clock in the morning, we'll be ready to play."

Easier said than done, especially with Boston sending John Lackey to the hill. Lackey, who has a 9-2 career mark against the Rays, picked up his first win as a member of the Red Sox last week, going 6 2/3 innings in a 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Lackey (1-0 with a tidy 1.42 ERA) will be looking endear himself to Beantown fans with a strong performance on a special day and the slumping Sox are in need of a reason to rally.

                  Pick: Red Sox

                    This Day in Baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 19 in Baseball History...

1900 - The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Braves, 19-17, in 10 innings, to set a major league record for most runs scored by two clubs on Opening Day. The Braves scored nine runs in the ninth inning to put the game into extra innings.

1920 - Al Schacht, who later became the "Clown Prince of Baseball," was all business as he pitched the Senators to a 7-0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

1928 - The Yankees are out of first place for the first time since May 1926 as they lose the morning Patriots Day game in Boston.

1938 - In the top of the first inning at Philadelphia, Ernie Koy of the Dodgers homers in his first major league at-bat. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff man Heinie Mueller also hits a home run in his first time up in the major leagues.

1949 - At pre-game ceremonies marking the season opener in Yankee Stadium, a granite monument to Babe Ruth is unveiled in center field. Plaques honoring Lou Gehrig and Miller Huggins are also presented.

1950 - Sid Gordon of the Braves hits the first N.L. grand slam of the season, as Boston beats the Giants 10-6 at the Polo Grounds. There will be 35 in the league and 68 in all in 1950. Both are records but both are later topped.

1956 - The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4, in 10 innings at Roosevelt Stadium in the first major-league game ever held in New Jersey.

1965 - At a cost of $20K, the outer Astrodome ceiling is painted because the sun's glare makes fielding fly balls hazardous. This will cause the grass to die and spur the introduction of artificial turf.

1966 - In the first regular season game at Anaheim Stadium, California drops a 3-1 decision to the White Sox before 31,660 fans. Rick Reichardt hits the Angels' first regular-season home run in the new facility.

1979 - Following a 6-3 loss to the Orioles, Yankees Rich Gossage and Cliff Johnson brawl in the clubhouse. Gossage sustains a sprained ligament in his left thumb and will be sidelined until July 12.

1981 - In an International League night game, the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Sox played to a 2-2 tie through 32 innings before play was suspended at 4:07 a.m. The game was completed later in the season with Pawtucket scoring the winning run in the 33rd inning of the longest game in professional baseball history.

1981 - In the first game of a doubleheader the Oakland Athletics set a major league record for consecutive wins at the start of the season, running their record to 11-0 with a 6-1 win over Seattle. The Mariners win the nightcap 3-2 on Richie Zisk's solo home run in the eighth inning.

1984 - Kansas City's Bret Saberhagen picks up his first major league victory as the Royals beat the Tigers 5-2. It is the first loss of the season for the red-hot Tigers, who began the year 9-0 and will never fall out of first place in the A.L. East.

1986 - Oakland's Jose Rijo sets a club record with 16 strikeouts in eight innings as the A's beat Seattle 7-2. The two clubs combine for 30 strikeouts overall, setting the modern major league record for a nine-inning game.

1987 - Dale Sveum's two-run home run off Greg Harris caps a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and gives the Brewers a 6-4 win over Texas and a 12-0 record, breaking the 1981 A's record for the best start in A.L. history.

1996 - The Rangers explode for 16 runs in the eighth inning of a 26-7 demolition of the Orioles. The eighth-inning outburst comes within one run of the record for most runs in an inning this century and raised Jesse Orosco's ERA from an ugly 9.82 to an almost unfathomable 27.00. Orosco is relieved by infielder Manny Alexander, who gets the last two outs but walks off the mound with a 67.50 ERA.

1997 - The first major league game is played in Hawaii. The Padres, who gave up three home games to further baseball relations and to further renovations at their stadium, play host for a doubleheader against St. Louis at spacious Aloha Stadium. The Cardinals win the doubleheader 1-0, and 2-1.
