    This Day in Baseball
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 17 in Baseball History...

1892 - In the first Sunday game in National League history, Cincinnati defeated St. Louis 5-1.

1929 - Babe Ruth and actress Claire Hodgson are married at 5:00 AM to avoid crowds. The next day, in his first at bat against Red Ruffing, the Babe will hit a home run. Rounding second base, he'll doff his cap to Claire in the stands.

1934 - At Ebbets Field, Casey Stengel makes his managerial debut, but his Dodgers lose 8-7 to the Braves.

1947 - The Dodgers win 12-6 over the Braves at home as Jackie Robinson gets his first major league hit — off Glenn Elliot.
1951 - In his first major league game, Mickey Mantle went 1-for-4 as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-0.

1953 - Mickey Mantle hits the longest home run in Griffith Stadium history, a 565-feet shot off of Chuck Stobbs of the Washington Senators. The Yanks win 7-3.

1960 - On Easter Sunday, Frank Lane brings A.L. batting champ Harvey Kuenn to Cleveland and sends co-home run champ Rocky Colavito to Detroit. Colavito, an unparalleled fan favorite in Cleveland, will hit 173 home runs before returning to the Tribe on January 20, 1965. Kuenn will be traded to the Giants after one season.

1964 - The New York Mets lost their first game at Shea Stadium, 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell hit the first homer at Shea.

1968 - The A's debut at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum by losing 4-1 to Baltimore. During the game, the dirt covering a shallow metal dome under the pitching mound, is kicked aside exposing the steel frame, so the mound is covered between innings.

1969 - Bill Stoneman of Montreal pitched a 7-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in only the 10th game of the Expos' existence.

1976 - Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies hit four consecutive home runs and added a single in an 18-6, 10-inning victory over the Cubs in Wrigley Field. Hitting .167 going into the game, Schmidt connected twice off Rick Reuschel, once off Rick's brother, Paul, and once off Mike Garman. He drove in eight runs. (Box Score)

1979 - At Oakland, only 653 fans show up to watch the A's beat the Mariners 6-5.

1983 - Nolan Ryan fans seven Expos in a 6-3 Houston win to become only the second pitcher to record 3,500 career strikeouts.

1988 - After ten consecutive losses the Braves win their first game of the season 3-1 over the Dodgers.

1989 - Kent Tekulve pitches two shutout innings in the Reds 3-2, ten-inning win over the Dodgers to pass Hoyt Wilhelm as the major leagues' all-time leader in relief appearances with 1,019.

1993 - Three Orioles end up on third base after Chad Curtis traps a line drive in center with the bases loaded. Angels catcher John Orton walks over to the bag and tags all three runners. Only one is entitled to the bag and the double play ends the inning. California third baseman Rene Gonzales observes, Harry's Radiator was the last team I was on where I saw something stupid like that happen.

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers [ABC | 3:00 PM ET]

Bulls: Chicago clinched their playoff berth on the final day of the regulars season, so one could argue the Bulls have been in playoff mode for the last few weeks. Chicago finished the regular season at 41-41 SU and 42-38-2 ATS overall this season. Despite being the last team in the playoffs, the Bulls are full of confidence. Combining last seasons success against Boston and the overall split of the 4 games with Cleveland this season, it's easy to understand why Chicago is so confident. PG Derrick Rose is going to put the Bulls on his back and take them as far as possible. Rose led the Bulls with 20.8 PPG and 6 APG this season. Rose had 24 PTS and 10 assists the last time he faced the Cavaliers. The Bulls are 17-24 SU and 22-19 ATS away from home this season. The Bulls were 23-20 ATS as the listed underdog this season, including 2-4 ATS as a road underdog between 9.5 and 12 PTS. The Bulls have fared well this season in their own division, going 10-5 ATS this year. Chicago has scored at least 100 PTS in 4 of their past 5 games, while holding their opponents to 93 PTS or fewer in their past 3 contests.

Bulls are 4-0 ATS last 4 games as a road underdog.
Over is 7-0 last 7 playoff games as an underdog.

                      Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 94 (Side of the Day)

Cavaliers (-11, O/U 191.5): Cleveland enters the playoffs as the clear team to beat not only in the Eastern Conference, but also the entire NBA. The Cavaliers finished the regular season at 61-21 SU, the best record in the NBA. Cleveland has home court advantage as long as they are in the playoffs, which is crucial considering they are 35-6 SU and 17-23-2 ATS at home this season. Cleveland is 31-34 ATS as the listed favorite this season, including 5-10 ATS as a home favorite of 9.5 to 12 PTS. Cleveland ended the regular season with 4 consecutive losses SU, but the Cavaliers had little to gain by playing hard. That showed from a betting standpoint, as the Cavs only had 2 ATS wins in their past 10 games. Cleveland will be expected to simply flip the switch, but some experts worry if that's even possible to begin with. F LeBron James will have something to say about that, as he's certainly excited to start yet another playoff season. James is well rested, and comes off a regular season that saw him average 29.7 PPG, 8.6 APG, and 7.3 RPG. PG Mo Williams and F Antawn Jamison each averaged more than 15 PPG to help pace the Cavaliers.

Cavaliers are 4-0 ATS last 4 playoff games as a favorite of 11 PTS or greater.
Under is 4-0 last 4 games as a home favorite of 11 PTS or greater.

Key Injuries - C Shaquille O'Neal (thumb) is probable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

Heat: Miami enters the postseason as arguably the hottest team in the NBA, as they have won 12 of their past 13 games SU. Miami is playing both great offense and defense as they enter their series with the Celtics. Miami is only a small road underdog tonight, especially considering they lost all 3 games against Boston this year SU. To ultimately beat Boston in this 7 game series, the Heat will have to shoot better than 29% from the 3 point line. The Celtics held the Heat to only 29% shooting from behind the arc in the 3 meetings this year. Miami has held 16 of their past 19 opponents under 100 PTS entering the playoffs. The Heat allowed the 2nd fewest PTS in the NBA this year at 94.2 PPG. G Dwyane Wade had yet another banner year, as he averaged team highs of 26.6 PPG and 6.5 APG this season. The 26.6 PPG that Wade averaged this year placed him 5th in the NBA. The Heat finished the regular season at 47-35 SU and 42-39-1 ATS overall this season. Miami played well away from home this year, going 23-18 SU and 24-17 ATS. The Heat were also 21-17 ATS as the listed underdog this season. F Michael Beasley will have to be more consistent if the Heat are to pull the minor upset of the Celtics.

Heat are 7-2 ATS last 9 games as a road underdog.
Under is 8-2-1 last 11 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - C Jermaine O'Neal (ankle) is probable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 87

Celtics (-4, O/U 185): Many experts believe this is the series that has the best chance of ending in an upset. Despite the fact Boston swept the regular season series, there is much doubt surrounding this Celtics team. On the surface, you see a team that won 50 games at 50-32 SU and 33-47-2 ATS this year. However, after starting the year 23-5 SU, Boston finished the year at 27-27 SU over their final 54 games. There are whispers around the league that F Kevin Garnett isn't close to healthy, and that this team will be broken up after the end of this playoff run. Boston is 24-17 SU and 12-28-1 ATS in home games this season. The Celtics were atrocious ATS as the listed favorite this season, going 24-38 ATS this year.
