    Daily Sports Roundup: April 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Stanley Cup playoffs continue on five fronts, while the Mariners host the Tigers, and the Giants battle with the Dodgers.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League has a full slate of games on Friday, with the White Sox at Cleveland, the Angels at Toronto, Tampa Bay at Boston, Kansas City at Minnesota, Baltimore at Oakland, Texas at the Yankees, and Detroit at Seattle. The Tigers will send Jeremy Bonderman (1-0, 1.80 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the season on Friday night; righthander Bonderman grabbed the win against the Tribe in his first outing of the year, allowing just one earned run on one hit over his five innings of work. The Mariners will counter with ace Felix Hernandez (0-0, 3.29 ERA); righthander Hernandez has picked up a pair of no-decisions over two starts this year, allowing five earned runs over 13 2-3 innings.

Over in the National League on Friday it's then Houston at the Cubs, Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Florida at Philadelphia, Milwaukee at Washington, Colorado at Atlanta, the Mets at St. Louis, Arizona at San Diego, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. Todd Wellemeyer (0-1, 5.68 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for the Giants on Friday night; righthander Wellemeyer was tagged with a loss by the Braves in his first start of the season, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits over 6 1-3 innings of work. The struggling Vicente Padilla (0-1, 11.42 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers; righthander Padilla has allowed 11 runs on 14 hits over 8 2-3 innings of work so far this year against the Pirates and Marlins.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL playoffs continue on Friday with Ottawa at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at New Jersey, Detroit at Phoenix, Colorado at San Jose, and Nashville at Chicago. The Predators and Blackhawks will be playing Game 1 on Friday; they're the last series to get underway. Chicago fell just short of the top overall seed in the Western Conference, ending up one point back of the San Jose Sharks at 52-22-8. Nashville locked down the seventh seed in the West with a 47-29-6 record. Hawks forward Troy Brouwer (personal) is expected to play on Friday, while d-man Brian Campbell (collarbone/ribs) is still out of action. Preds forward Patric Hornqvist (upper body) is listed as probable for the opener.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

The total is off the boards in the Astros-Cubs matinee pending the forecast on wind speed and direction.

Lines to keep an eye on

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox: The total has dopped from 9.5 to 9 at some shops.

Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves: The total has fallen from 9 to 8.5 at most books.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres: The total has dipped from 8 to 7.5 at most shops.

      Who's hot

Detroit Red Wings are 10-3 in their last 13.

Philadelphia Flyers are 7-1 in their last eight vs. New Jersey Devils.

Chicago Blackhawks are 6-1 in their last seven.

      Who's not

Colorado Avalanche are 4-10 in their last 14.

Houston Astros are 1-8 this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins are 2-6 in their last eight vs. Ottawa Senators.

      Key stat

0 - Number of times the Utah Jazz have covered the spread against the Denver Nuggets over the past two seasons. Utah is 3-5 SU in those meetings but 0-6-2 ATS.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

The Colorado Avalanche will likely be without a pair of right wingers in Peter Mueller (concussion) and David Jones (knee), both of whom are listed as doubtful for tonight's game at San Jose. The two have combined for 19 goals and 34 assists this season, leaving the Avs severely shorthanded against the Sharks if neither are in the lineup.

      Game of the day

Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes

      Notable quotable

"I respect every coach, every player, everybody. I never say anything bad about anybody else or question why they do this or do that. So for them to say that about me, I don't even want to use no foul language."

Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant told the Oklahoman about Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who was fined $35,000 for his comments about the scoring champ getting favorable calls to get to the free-throw line.

      Tips and notes

Chicago White Sox ace Mark Buehrle is off to a great start at 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA, including a 6-0 win over the Indians last week, his second straight shutout against the Tribe dating back to last season. The Indians snapped a five-game losing skid Thursday and were held to just two runs in each of four of those losses. The Sox have finally started to rattle the bats and should score more than enough than Buehrle needs.

The seventh-seeded Flyers' first-round win over the Devils was not a fluke. After their 2-1 victory on Wednesday night, they have now won seven of their last eight against the second-seeded Devils, including 3-1 in New Jersey. The Devils deny that the Flyers have their number and may be motivated to even the series tonight. But at -190 on the money line, it's hard to like the Devils at that number.

Sunday's race is the third since NASCAR decided to switch back to spoilers, but the first two came at short tracks where the aerodynamic change has little impact. Texas Motorspeedway will be the first real test, although four-time champion Jimmie Johnson was one of the drivers chosen to test the spoiler at Charlotte, a similar track in size and speed. Just another reason to take a serious look at Johnson to win again this weekend.

        Friday six-pack

-- NHL playoffs are most underrated sporting event in North America.

-- LSU-Tulane baseball game drew 10,682 fans Wednesday, more than three major league games did that night.

-- Colorado averaged 6,267 fans in an 11,000-seat basketball arena, one of many reasons why Jeff Bzdelik is now coaching Wake Forest.

-- Phillies had their 45th sellout in a row Thursday; Roy Halladay's 1st home start for Philadelphia will be #46 Friday night.

-- Why couldn't Jose Reyes have batted 3rd Wednesday/Thursday? If it is such a great idea, why not do it as soon as possible?

-- I'd forgotten that the Orioles started the '88 season 0-21. Ouch.

        *********************************************

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts after a taxing day.......

        13) New trend in mid-major coaching seems to be jumping ship the year before you're going to be fired; Hartford coach left to be an assistant for Penn Quakers and UL-Monroe's coach left early to become an assistant at South Carolina. Now comes word that Albany's Will Brown is looking at the Dartmouth job. Getting that job would be like going on a blind date and seeing Rosie O'Donnell sitting there waiting for you. Not good, but it is a date, just not one most people would want.

        12) Brown got Albany (my alma mater) to NCAAs twice, but last couple years have been a struggle. AD McElroy has never seemed supportive of Brown, but stepped on the bandwagon after two NCAA appearances. Now rumors are strong that Brown is out of favor again. McElroy must think he's back at UCLA- this world is just very fickle sometimes.

        11) If I'm pitching for Colorado and I see Jason Giambi playing first base, I'm not happy. The guy can't play the field anymore.

        10) College of St Rose here in Albany has a new baseball facility and boy is it nice; took in a game there this week. Field has lights, bleachers, nice scoreboard and a press box. The league St Rose plays in uses only wood bats, which makes for better baseball. All in all, a fun afternoon.

        9) Further evidence that college hoop recruits sign with coaches and not the school: Siena lost its best basketball recruit when 6-7 Melsahn Basabe got out of his commitment to the Saints, most likely to go to Iowa where Fran McCaffery is promoting an up-tempo style of play. My question for the kid would be: If you're good enough to play at Iowa, why in the name of Roy Marble were you going to Siena in the first place?

        8) Now that the 76ers have fired Eddie Jordan, Rutgers needs to step up and make alumnus Jordan its new basketball coach. He would do well.

        7) In two games vs lefthanded starting pitchers, Orioles scored one run. Angels are 0-3 against southpaws so far this season.

        6) Washington pitcher Stammen faced Phillies twice already and has not fared well. allowing 16 hits on 32 balls in play (.500); 11 of the 35 batters he's faced scored. LY's major league average on balls in play was .299.

        5) Placido Polanco is just third player since 1952 to start the season with eight multi-hit games in the first nine games of the season; Hank Aaron in 1952 did it and Barry Larkin did it twenty years ago.

        4) Joe Morgan made sure to wish the former union head Marvin Miller a happy birthday on air Sunday night, saying that Miller made baseball a better sport for everyone. Miller helped make Morgan rich, thats for sure but is modern baseball better now for fans than it was 40 years ago? I'd argue very strongly that it isn't, unless you live in Boston, NY or LA.

        3) New York City OTB might run out of money this weekend; how in the name of Art Schlichter can an organization that takes in $1B in bets each year go bankrupt? If it wasn't so pathetic, it might actually be funny, how the government can screw up things that seem fool-proof.

        2) The new college football taunting rules are so bad, even people that put them into law know they're bad, otherwise they wouldn't delay putting the rule into effect until the 2011 season. If a kid showboats on his way to the end zone, not only is it a penalty, but its from the spot and they take away the touchdown. This could lead to some serious corruption; it is hard to believe the stupid things administrators can some up with.

        1) Next week will be weird, since it is late April and we'll be talking NFL almost all week, with schedule being released Tuesday night and the draft Thursday-Saturday. NFL is good at staying in the news; next week news will be for all the right reasons. We all could use some good news.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-260, 5.5)

In a series that features stars on both sides of the ice, the Ottawa Senators turned to their role players for a lift in Wednesday’s 5-4 Game 1 victory in Pittsburgh.

Tough guys Chris Neil, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Kelly and Peter Regin all found the back of the net for the Senators while defenseman Erik Karlsson also scored in the opening win.

"We're trying to do it by committee, we're trying to do it as a team, we're trying to get in shooting lanes, we're trying to block shots, we're trying to have numbers at the bluelines," Ottawa coach Cory Clouson told CBC Sports.

As much as Clouson is happy those skaters contributed, he knows not to count on those goals in Game 2 Friday. He would much rather see stars like Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza stepping up. Those two had an assist each but Alfredsson failed to register a shot on goal while Spezza managed just three shots on goal.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh’s studs were walking tall. Evgeni Malkin scored twice and added a helper while Sidney Crosby picked up three assists. Those two combined for six shots on goal in the loss and will be aiming to tie this series at 1-1 before making the move to Ottawa for Game 3 Sunday.

"We want to have our best effort each and every shift, but you're playing good teams in the playoffs, and there's going to be swings in momentum," Crosby told reporters. "It's a matter of adjusting, it's a matter of executing when you get chances."

            Pick: Pittsburgh

Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes (115, 5)

Phoenix has been a team of opportunity all season.

The Coyotes made the most of a down year in the Pacific Division, jumped on a hot goalie in Ilya Bryzgalov and took advantage of Detroit’s penalties in Wednesday’s 3-2 Game 1 victory at home.

Phoenix scored all three of its goals with the man advantage, finishing the game 3-for-4 on the power play. The Coyotes weren’t that opportunistic during the regular season, ranking 28th in the NHL in power-play efficiency.

Those man advantages helped Phoenix dig itself out of a 2-1 first period lead. The Coyotes were a little anxious in their first period and a half of playoff hockey since 2002.

“We might have had too much emotion at the beginning,” Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan told the media. “But that’s okay, it’s been too long for a lot of us.”

Expect those postseason jitters to be calmed by the time the puck drops Friday night.

            Pick: Phoenix

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays (-110, 8.5)

Has Angels manager Mike Scioscia mastered the art of the team meeting?

Remember last season when the Angels played .500 ball for the first two months, held a team gathering after a sloppy loss to the Rays on June 11 and went 68-36 the rest of the way?

He didn't wait that long for the annual closed-door chat after the Halos' 2-6 start. Scioscia called the team together Tuesday and they promptly went out and beat the Bronx Bombers on Wednesday.

"Today we seemed to have a little more fire," Torii Hunter said after the victory. "You don't know if it was the meeting yesterday, but today I saw something different in the pitching staff, the hitters and the way we played defensively, all the way around."

While it's too early to call it a turning point, the Angels head north of the border to meet the Blue Jays today with a lot more confidence. They will give the ball to ace Jered Weaver, who's off to a hot start by allowing just four earned runs in 12 innings of work.

Weaver is especially sharp against the Jays, going 5-1 in his career with a level 3.00 ERA. Look for Weaver to shut down what has been a red-hot Jays team.

              Pick: Angels

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs (-210, Off)

Houston had a problem, but may have put it in the past with Thursday's victory over St. Louis.

Off to an 0-8 start, the Astros salvaged their series finale against Kyle Lohse and the Cardinals for their first win of the season.

Houston now heads to Wrigley Field to meet the Cubs and banged-up starter Carlos Silva, who experienced some soreness in his shoulder after his first start at the Reds, where he pitched six innings and settled for a no-decision.

The Astros will go with Felipe Paulino, who was in line for a win against the Phillies in his first start before the bullpen blew it.

It's hard to trust Silva at this price.

              Pick: Astros

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 16 in Baseball History...

1929 - Cleveland outfielder Earl Averill becomes the first A.L. player to hit a home run in his first major league time at bat when he blasts an 0-and-2 pitch off Detroit's Earl Whitehill in the Indians' 5-4, 11-inning victory.

1935 - Babe Ruth's N.L. debut draws 25,000 to Braves Field. The Babe's two-hit debut includes a 430-foot home run off Carl Hubbell, as Boston beats New York 4-2. The Babe's contract includes a share in the team's profits.

1940 - A baseball game was televised for the first time, by WGN-TV. It was an exhibition game at Wrigley Field with Jack Brickhouse doing the play-by-play. The White Sox defeated the Cubs, 4-1.

1940 - Working in 47-degree weather, Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians throws an Opening Day no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox, winning 1-0 at Comiskey Park. It's the first Opening Day no-hitter since Leon Red Ames pitched one for the Giants in 1909.

1948 - The White Sox beat the Cubs 4-1 in an exhibition game at Wrigley Field with Jack Brickhouse at the WGN-TV mike. This is the first telecast in Chicago history.

1972 - In Chicago, 22-year-old rookie Burt Hooton of the Cubs no-hits the Phillies 4-0. It is Hooton's fourth major league game over two seasons. He has allowed just eight hits in 30 innings with his knuckle-curve.

1977 - Regulations force Oakland pitcher Vida Blue to discard his old, discolored lucky cap because it is no longer identical in color, trim and style to those of his teammates.

1978 - Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-0. Less than a year later, Bob's brother, Ken, of the Houston Astros pitched a no-hitter against Atlanta. They are the only brothers to throw no-hitters.

1983 - Padres first baseman Steve Garvey plays in his 1,118th consecutive game, breaking Billy Williams' N.L. record. Garvey goes 2-for-4 in an 8-5 Padres loss at Los Angeles.

1984 - Dave Kingman of the Oakland A's hit three home runs, including a grand slam, in his first three at-bats. He drove in a total of eight runs in a 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

1989 - Kelly Gruber becomes the first member of the Blue Jays to hit for the cycle as Toronto beats Kansas City 15-8.
