    Daily Sports Roundup: April 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Caps play host to the Habs in a playoff battle, while the Orioles meet the A's, and the Cubs get a visit from the Brewers.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Thursday has Texas at Cleveland, Boston at Minnesota, the Angels at the Yankees, the White Sox at Toronto, and Baltimore at Oakland. The Orioles will go with David Hernandez on the road against Oakland on Thursday; righthander Hernandez took a hard-luck loss against the Blue Jays in his first start of the season, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits over six innings of work. The A's will counter with Ben Sheets on Thursday; righthander Sheets has already pitched twice for Oakland this season, giving up five earned runs on 14 hits over 11 innings against the Angels and the Mariners.

Meanwhile, over in the National League on Thursday it'll be Houston at St. Louis, Washington at Philadelphia, the Mets at Colorado, Atlanta at San Diego, Cincinnati at Florida, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Milwaukee at the Cubs. Jeff Suppan is expected to get the ball for the Brewers at Wrigley Field on Thursday; righthander Suppan began the year on the disabled list with a sore neck and would be making his season debut. The Cubs will go with Carlos Zambrano; righthander Zambrano is 1-1 with an ugly 11.88 ERA through two starts this year, but he did beat the Reds (three runs over seven innings) in his most recent start.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League's playoff schedule offers up three Game 1s on Thursday, with Boston at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Vancouver, and Montreal at Washington. The Canadiens needed a point from an overtime loss in their last game of the regular season to finish 39-33-10 and lock up the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals, on the other hand, went 6-1-3 in their final 10 games to cruise to the best record in the league at 54-15-13. The oddsmakers have the Caps as big -270 favorites for Thursday, with the total set at 6 goals. Montreal and Washington split their regular-season series at two victories apiece.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the PGA Tour hits the links at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina starting Thursday for the Verizon Heritage. Ian Poulter and K.J. Choi are tied as the 10/1 Vegas favorites to win this week's Tour event, with Jim Furyk and Paul Casey just behind them on that odds list at 12/1. Camilo Villegas (15/1) rounds out the Top 5 contenders, with both Luke Donald and Robert Allenby at 18/1. Defending champ Brian Gay sits at 30/1 to win the tournament. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are both skipping the Verizon Heritage this year.

Bettor's best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians – C.J. Wilson was scratched from his start on Wednesday because of food poisoning. Wilson or Matt Harrison will be slipped into the rotation spot for Thursday’s game but the Rangers starter is uncertain.

The total in the Cubs game hasn’t been posted because of the wind direction being unknown.

Lines to keep an eye on

Philadelphia opened as -265 home chalk over the Nationals but that moneyline has dropped to -225 in some markets.

The Angels-Yankees total has dropped from an opener of 10 down to 9.5 at most shops.

The total in the Reds-Marlins game has dropped a half run from its opener and now stands at 8.5. The first two games in this series went over.

      Weather report

There is a 30 percent chance of rain from isolated thunderstorms during the first couple hours of the Red Sox-Twins game. Wind is expected to blow out of the southwest from 15-17 mph.

      Who’s hot

St. Louis is off to a 6-2 start, earning 4.02 units on the moneyline.

The Capitals are 6-1 in their last seven outings.

      Who’s not

The Kings are 4-6 SU in their last 10 games, dropping 5.83 units on the moneyline.

Houston is 0-8 to start the 2010 season.

      Key stat

1 – Number of errors the Twins have committed this season. Minnesota has a new double-play tandem up the middle this season with Orlando Hudson and J.J. Hardy. The teams is 6-3 on the season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was put on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain on Wednesday. Manager Charlie Manuel said that Rollins would “be out some time” and that he’s “hurt pretty bad”. Juan Castro at 37 years young will replace Rollins at shortstop and Shane Victorino is expected to claim the leadoff spot in the Philadelphia lineup. The Phils complete their series with the Nats on Thursday.

      Notable quotable

"Bill's not worth a (expletive). To get this (expletive) stadium, I needed to bring his (butt) in."

-- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones speaking in a video about Bill Parcells. Watch the drunken video here.

      Tips and notes

      - Scott Kazmir will make his first start of the season on Thursday but you have to wonder if the Angels have much confidence in him. Last week, Kazmir told MLB.com that he was "very surprised" to be placed on the disabled list and that he felt ready to pitch that day. Kazmir hasn’t been the dominating pitcher he once was, posting a 3.83 ERA last year with a lower-than-normal strikeout total.

      - If you are looking for a darkhorse pick for this week’s Verizon Heritage golf tournament, Boo Weekley could be your man. Weekley won the event in 2007 and 2008 and finished T13 last three. Harbour Town Golf Links obviously suits his eye, and Weekley is one of Covers Expert Matt Fargo's picks to win at +3000. Weekly hasn’t been playing all that well this season but has had more than two weeks of rest and preparation for this tourney.

      - The Angels placed closer Brian Fuentes (0.00 ERA) on the 15-day DL and that’s the worst thing that could happen to this team. L.A.’s bullpen has been awful this season, compiling a 5.68 ERA through nine games. Fernando Rodney is now the closer and he posted a 4.40 ERA in the same role with the Tigers last year. In four inning of work this season, Rodney has given up three runs which equates to a 12.00 ERA – the highest among Angels relievers. It might be wise to take a look at the 5-inning line if backing L.A. because this bullpen cannot be trusted right now.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Washington Capitals (-275, 6)

The Montreal Canadiens are clear underdogs in their first round matchup against the Washington Capitals, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to what Thomas Plekanec has to say about Washington’s goaltending situation.

“It’s not as though we are facing (Martin) Brodeur or (Ryan Miller)”, Plekanec told La Presse. “They don’t have a dominant goaltender. When you look at the goaltending matchup in this series it favors our team. I just believe that our goaltending is more solid than theirs.

“I’m not saying their goalies are bad. I’m just saying our goalies are better.”

Statistically speaking, Plekanec does have a point. The Canadiens’ likely starter, Jaroslav Halak (.924 save percentage, 2.40 goals against average), performed better than Capitals starter Jose Theodore (.911 save percentage, 2.82 goals against average) during the regular season.

And who can forget Theodore’s lackluster performance in the first game of the playoffs last year, surrendering four goals on 21 shots to the New York Rangers and getting bench for the next 13 playoff games.

But Halak clearly lacks postseason experience. His three career playoff outings pale in comparison to Theodore’s 49, which includes a series win over the top-seeded Boston Bruins while he was still with the Habs.

To make matters worse, the Capitals and the Canadiens boast the two best power plays in the NHL. In the four meeting between these two teams this season, a total of 28 goals were scored, eight of those coming on the man advantage.

          Pick: Over

Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks (-200, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks may have the most prolific offense in the Western Conference, but their back end has been a source of concern for some time.

The defense should welcome Shane O’Brien back from a mild shoulder injury, but will be without Willie Mitchell and Brad Lukowich. Aaron Rome and Sami Salo are both listed as questionable for Thursday’s game, although the always enigmatic Salo claims he’s doing just fine.

“Was there something wrong with me?” Salo told reporters when asked about the undisclosed injury that kept him out of the last two games of the regular season. “That was you guys who made it up. Personal reasons. Everything’s good. Something came up. I couldn’t play against Calgary (on Saturday), but everything has all settled down. There wasn’t an injury if you guys want to know that.”

This wouldn’t be the first time Salo has tried to dupe reporters. During the 2007 playoffs, he told the media he had the flu even though head coach Alain Vigneault admitted he was suffering from a torso injury.

With or without Salo in the lineup Thursday, the Kings will look to take advantage of Vancouver’s depleted defensive unit. They did just that the last time the two teams met, earning an 8-3 win at the Staples Center.

Los Angeles might be a little nervous early in its first postseason appearance since 2002, but should still be able to stick with the Canucks.

          Pick: Kings

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Minnesota Twins (-130, 9)

The Twins have exited the Metrodome and now play outdoors at MLB’s newest ballpark – Target Field.

A Yale physicist released a report that predicts runs will be tougher to come by for the Twins this season because of the switch from indoors to outdoors.

“Cold air is more dense and thus more resistant than hot air,” Robert Adair said. “The same fly ball travels about four feet less for every 10-degree drop in temperature.”

If Adair’s numbers are accurate, less distance on fly balls is going to result in fewer home runs, triples and doubles and ultimately lower game totals.

The theory has proved to be correct so far as the Red Sox and Twins played under the posted total of 9 in the ballpark opener and pushed in the second game of the series. The second game would have gone well under had the teams’ bullpens not surrendered four runs in the eighth.

There is a chance of rain in this game tomorrow and runs should be hard to come by.

            Pick: Under

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (-165)

Carlos Zambrano is a pitcher that tends to wear his emotions on his sleeve.

In his opening start, Big Z gave up eight earned runs (six in the first inning) in only 1.1 innings on the mound and he may have been a little amped up.

"Basically, this was my first start,” Zambrano said after his second start where he gave up only three runs in a winning effort. “I was excited today. I was hungry to go out there. My first outing was not good. I was anxious to go out there and pitch my game, and I did it today."

Jeff Suppan will be making his first start of the season for the Brewers after coming off the 15-day disabled list. Zambrano is 4 for 9 with three RBIs lifetime against Suppan while Chicago first baseman Derrek Lee is a career .431 hitter against the righty.

Look for the Cubbies to pull out the brooms and complete the sweep of Milwaukee on Thursday.

            Pick: Cubs

              This Day in Baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 15 in Baseball History...

1909 - Before an Opening Day crowd of 30,000 at New York, Red Ames pitches a no-hitter for nine innings against the Brooklyn Superbas, surrenders a hit with one out in the tenth, then loses the game 3-0 in the 13th. The Giants outfield has no putouts.

1918 - The A.L. season opens with Babe Ruth pitching a four-hit 7-1 victory over the A's. Red Sox manager Ed Barrow will start Ruth's conversion to slugger by working him into 72 games in the outfield and first base.

1947 - Jackie Robinson goes hitless in three trips in his debut but handles 11 chances at first base, a new position for him, in a 5-3 Brooklyn win over the Boston Braves. Coach Clyde Sukeforth, interim manager and the man credited with first scouting Robinson, guides the team to two wins before stepping down.

1954 - Clint Courtney of the Orioles hits the first major league home run in Memorial Stadium. The Birds draw an Opening Day record crowd of 46,354 in a 3-1 afternoon win against the White Sox.

1958 - The San Francisco Giants defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first major league game played at Seals Stadium, with Ruben Gomez pitching an 8-0 shutout. Giants shortstop Daryl Spencer hits the first home run. The Giants set an attendance record for Seals Stadium by drawing 23,192 fans.

1966 - Bob Gibson's 9-2 win at Forbes Field is the 18th straight for St. Louis in Pittsburgh. St. Louis ties the major league record (set by the Dodgers against the Phillies in 1945-46) for consecutive road wins against one club.

1968 - Three records are smashed when the Astros score an unearned run in the 24th inning to squeeze by the Mets 1-0 after six hours and six minutes. It sets the mark as the longest N.L. game played to completion, the longest major league night game, and the first 23 innings are the longest major league scoreless game. The game ties the A.L.'s longest complete game (A's 4, Red Sox 1 in 24 innings on September 1, 1906).

1972 - Reggie Jackson sports a mustache as the A's top the Twins 4-3 in 11 innings. Jackson is reported to be the first major league player with facial hair since Wally Schang in 1914.

1976 - Newly remodeled Yankee Stadium is jammed with 52,613 fans for Opening Day ceremonies. The 1923 Yankee team is honored, and Bob Shawkey, winner of the 1923 Stadium opener, throws out the first ball. The Yankees beat the Twins 11-4 on 14 hits, but the only home runs are two hit by Minnesota's Dan Ford.

1983 - Detroit pitcher Milt Wilcox is one out away from a perfect game when pinch hitter Jerry Hairston singles, and Wilcox settles for a 6-0 one-hitter over the White Sox. This is only the third time in major league history a perfect bid has been stopped with one out to go.

1987 - Juan Nieves throws the first no-hitter in Brewers history, winning 7-0 against Baltimore. Milwaukee runs its record to 9-0.

1993 - Andre Dawson became the 25th player to hit 400 home runs as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3.

1993 - Sparky Anderson got his 2,000th victory as a manager in the Detroit Tigers' 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.

1997 - The 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's breaking the color barrier in baseball is celebrated before 54,047 at Shea Stadium during a game between the Mets and the Dodgers. President Bill Clinton and Jackie's widow, Rachel Robinson, both speak during the 35-minute presentation, but the surprise of the evening occurs when acting commissioner Bud Selig announces that the number 42 will be retired in perpetuity for every team. On the field, the Mets beat the Dodgers 5-0.

1998 - The first-ever American League-National League doubleheader ends up a good day for New York. The Yankees are forced to come to Shea Stadium after a beam falls into the stands at Yankee Stadium on April 13. The Yankees earn their first victory in Queens in 22 years as they defeat the Angels 6-3. Former Mets star Darryl Strawberry, the all-time home run leader at Shea, adds to his total with a shot into the left field bleachers. In the regularly-scheduled night game, the Mets beat the Cubs 2-1. The Yankees, who played at Shea in 1974-75 while Yankee Stadium was renovated, are the winner in the attendance department (40,743 to 16,012).

                          2009-10 playoffs

All four underdogs won on first night of Stanley Cup playoffs

Washington won five of last six games overall; they're 6-3 in last nine vs Montreal; teams split four games this year. Canadiens lost four of last five games in this building. Caps have won one playoff series since '98, so lot of pressure on them; Montreal is 4-2 in last six first round series. Habs backed into playoffs with 3-8 finish to the regular season, losing season finale at home to Toronto, but once you get in playoffs, anything can happen. Just ask the Avalanche, who upset Sharks Wednesday.

Bruins won one playoff series (LY) in last eight years; they're 8-4 in last 12 games, winning last three while allowing total of six goals. Boston lost five of last seven visits to Buffalo (won two of last three). Bruins are 4-2 vs Buffalo this year, with total of 20 goals being scored in last four tilts. Sabres missed playoffs last two years, after losing in semifinals the two years before that. Buffalo lost four of its last six games overall.

Kings are in playoffs for first time since 2002; they're 4-7 in last eleven games, 2-7 in last nine games against Canucks, losing last four visits to Vancouver by combined score of 12-4. LA did whack Canucks 8-3 in the last series meeting April 1. Vancouver is 5-7 in last 12 games; they're 3-1 in last four first round series, 4-1 in last five home games overall. Seven of last nine series games stayed under the total.
