    Daily Sports Roundup: April 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Hawks take on the Bucks, the Raptors play in Detroit against the Pistons, and the Rangers hit the road to play the Tribe.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA begins the final week of its regular season with 11 games on Monday, including Atlanta at Milwaukee. The Hawks (51-29 SU, 46-34 ATS) have won two straight games heading into their Monday matchup, beating the Wizards 105-95 in Washington in their last game on Saturday. The Bucks (45-35 SU, 52-27-1 ATS) were beaten 105-90 at home by Boston in their last game on Saturday. The Bucks and Hawks have split their season series 1-1 so far, with Milwaukee winning 98-95 at home as a 6-point favorite when the teams last met March 22. John Salmons had 32 points for the Bucks; Joe Johnson poured in 27 for Atlanta.

Elsewhere on the NBA hardwood on Monday it'll be Orlando at Indiana, Miami at Philadelphia, Charlotte at New Jersey, Washington at New York, Minnesota at San Antonio, Memphis at Denver, Oklahoma City at Portland, Houston at Sacramento, Dallas at the Clippers, and Toronto at Detroit. The Pistons (26-54 SU, 33-44-3 ATS) will be looking to get in the way of the Raptors' playoff chances on Monday, but they're 0-3 against Toronto this season. The two teams last met on December 27, when the Raptors pulled out a 102-95 home win as a 4-point favorite. The injured Chris Bosh led Toronto with 25 points in that game.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

American League action on the diamond on Monday has Kansas City at Detroit, Boston at Minnesota, Oakland at Seattle, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the White Sox at Toronto, and Texas at Cleveland. The Rangers will send Rich Harden to the mound for the second time this season on Monday; righthander Harden gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit and five walks over 3 2-3 innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays last week. The Indians will counter with Fausto Carmona; righthander Carmona got the win against the White Sox in his first start, surrendering three earned runs on one hit and six walks over his six innings.

Meanwhile, the National League on Monday offers up Milwaukee at the Cubs, Houston at St. Louis, Atlanta at San Diego, Cincinnati at Florida, Pittsburgh at San Francisco, and Washington at Philadelphia. The Phillies will go with Cole Hamels in their Monday matinee; lefthander Hamels beat the Nationals in his first outing of the year last week, holding them to two earned runs on five hits over his five innings of work. Jason Marquis will get the ball for Washington in this one; righthander Marquis was roughed up by Philadelphia in his first outing of the season, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits over his four innings of work.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Toronto Raptors at Detroit Pistons: Pistons guards Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Rodney Stuckey (ribs) are questionable.

Memphis Grizzlies at Denver Nuggets: Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo (ankle) is questionable.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers: Thunder center Nenad Krstic (back) and Blazers forward Jeff Pendergraph (illness) are doubtful.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Clippers: Mavs center Brendan Heyward (ankle) is day-to-day and forward Shawn Marion (oblique) is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers: The Heat opened as 4.5-point favorites but have dropped to as low as 3.5 at some books.

Houston Rockets at Sacramento Kings: The total came out at 207.5 and has climbed to as high as 209.5 at some shops.

      Who's hot

Indiana Pacers are 10-2 SU in their last 12.

Miami Heat are 9-1 SU in their last 10.

Milwaukee Bucks are 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine.

Detroit Pistons are 5-0 ATS in their last five.

      Who's not

Minnesota Timberwolves are 1-20 SU in their last 21.

Denver Nuggets are 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14.

Sacramento Kings are 1-9 SU in their last 10.

Charlotte Bobcats are 1-5 ATS in their last six.

      Key stat

55 - The number of seconds between Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby's 50th and 51st goals of the season on Sunday.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy left Sunday's game against the Lakers with a knee injury and is questionable for tonight's showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder, a key game for playoff positioning. If he cannot play, the Blazers have little chance without Roy's 21.8 points and 4.8 assists per game against the Thunder.

      Game of the day

      Thunder at Blazers

      Notable quotable

"We've had a great relationship throughout our entire lives and throughout our career. I'm proud of what he did. I'm happy for him."

Barry Bonds said of Mark McGwire's recent admission to steroid use.

      Tips and notes

Once the laughing stock of the league, the New Jersey Nets are suddenly getting the last laugh against some playoff contenders. They are 5-1 in their last six home games, including wins over the Bulls and Spurs, and now they get a shot at the Charlotte Bobcats, who are 1-5 ATS in their last six. The Nets are 2-1 against the Bobcats, the only team they own a winning record against this season.

A pair of one-goal games Sunday could have a huge impact on the NHL playoffs. The Flyers beat the Rangers 2-1 in overtime to claim the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and they earned the No. 7 seed via a tie-breaker, while the Devils earned the No. 2 spot with a 2-1 win over the Sabres. That's good news for the Flyers, who went 5-1 against the Devils this season and stand a good chance at a first-round upset.

The Milwaukee Brewers had a late game at home against St. Louis on Sunday night before making the short overnight trip to Chicago for Opening Day at Wrigley Field. Cubs starter Ryan Dempster is 7-2 against the Brew Crew at the Friendly Confines and he is coming off a strong first start against the Braves in which he took a disappointing 3-2 loss. He and the Cubs won't disappoint the Bleacher Bums today.

        Monday six-pack

-- Joe West's crew had Toronto-Baltimore game (259 pitches, 2:22); in Queens, Nationals-Mets had 271 pitches, but took 2:53 to play.

-- Reds' rookie P Leake threw 49 balls/57 strikes, walked seven, but he allowed the Cubs only one run in 6.2 IP, as Cincinnati won, 3-1.

-- First-place A's are 5-2, with both losses coming in last inning.

-- Roy Halladay is now 4-0, 0.53 in his last four starts, with three CG.

-- Pirates scored 13 runs this weekend in three games at Arizona. In the fourth inning Sunday, Diamondbacks scored 13 runs. In one inning.

-- Twins' Jon Rauch has four saves already; so much for Twins missing Joe Nathan. Minnesota opens its new stadium Monday afternoon.

        ******************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

        13) Phil Mickelson pretty much said in his news conference Sunday night that Augusta National is lot easier (more forgiving is phrase he used) than other courses on Tour. Wonder how the good ol' boys liked that one.

        12) Mickelson was -16 this week; he was -6 just on the 13th hole, with a couple eagles and two birdies.

        11) I'm thinking all the CBS golf announcers must be damned glad when Masters week ends, so they can stop walking on eggshells with every word they say. One wrong word, you get banned. Ask Gary McCord.

        10) Columbia basketball coach Joe Jones quit this week to go to Boston College as an assistant coach; three Ivy League jobs are now open. If a guy quits as a head coach to become an assistant, its quite an indictment of the program he leaves. Doesn't happen very often.

        9) Instant replay overturned the umps and gave Josh Willingham a grand slam against Johan Santana in the first inning Sunday. He would have had a triple anyway, but it was clear the ball cleared the home run barrier.

        8) Last guy to hit grand slam off Santana? Felix Hernandez, of all people.

        7) Record that will never, ever be broken: Walter Johnson (career record of 417-279) threw 531 complete games in his 666 career starts.

        6) Twins-White Sox game Sunday was first one this season where both teams' starting pitcher got an out in the 8th inning.

        5) There is a spring/summer basketball program in Virginia called the Boo Williams All-Stars; they had 42 alumni playing in the NCAA tournament last month- thats an awful lot of kids on just 65 teams.

        4) Milwaukee Brewers sell more sausages at Miller Park than 22 teams sell hot dogs in their parks; Miller Park is only ballpark in big leagues that sells more sausages than weiners. Just thought you'd like to know.

        3) Flyers made NHL playoffs in dramatic style, beating Rangers 2-1 in a shootout. Six months of hard work comes down to one shootout. Wow.

        2) NHL playoffs start Wednesday; we'll have info on every game, every day until Lord Stanley's Cup is presented to the championship team.

        1) You'll have to excuse me now. Time to go do my taxes. I like to get it done early and out of the way. Yes, to me, April 12th is early.

Game of the day: Thunder at Trail Blazers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers (N/A)

There is one common goal amongst the logjam of teams in the Western Conference playoff scene. Everyone wants to avoid the Lakers in the first round.

Tonight's game will go along way in determining which team draws the short straw.

Portland won at L.A. on Sunday and crawled out of eighth place for the time being. The Thunder are eyeing the fifth seed but could slip all the way to eighth in the final week of play

            Brandon Roy questionable

Despite the Trail Blazers' win on Sunday the most important aspect of the game was a knee injury suffered by star guard Brandon Roy.

Roy appeared to have banged his right knee with about 4:30 minutes left in the first quarter and then was seen flexing the knee. He left the game and returned later with a sleeve on it but played only a minute more before leaving for good.

Roy had a meniscus tear in his right knee that forced him to miss parts of his junior year at Washington and had left knee surgery in August of 2008.

Roy has already been sitting out practices with a sore back and may get the night off tonight.

            Season series

The road team has won all three games in the series this year and each game has gone under. Nine of the past 10 meetings between the two teams have gone under.

            Putting the D in OKC

The Thunder learned a lesson in the past week after blowing leads in two games that resulted in losses. On Friday they nearly did it again but then held Phoenix to just 12 points in the third quarter to snap the skid.

While Thunder coach Scott Brooks refuses to dwell on the past he said he talked about the team's costly defensive lapses. Utah scored 140 points against OKC in an overtime win.

"We play forward," Brooks said. "I have a philosophy, 'We play forward.' We talked about it after the game. We talk about it when we look at film, and then we move on. We learn something from every game.

"We can't run with the Phoenix Suns. We can't expect it to be a jump-shot contest. They're going to beat us in that game more times than not. We have to make them miss and not (be) hoping that they miss."

Closing in on the scoring title

Kevin Durant is on track to becoming the youngest player in NBA history to win the season scoring title. Durant scored 35 points in the win Friday over Phoenix to raise his average to 30.

His competition, LeBron James is averaging 29.7 but the King has sat out three straight games to rest up for the playoffs and he may not play again until they start.

Durant doesn't seem to care about the title.

"I keep telling you it doesn't matter (if I win it)," Durant said. "It's cool to be a part of it... but we've got to compete and win these last few games. Scoring is something I'm not really concerned about because it's going to come within the offense. I'm not going to force anything and continue to play my game."

Suns coach Alvin Gentry said Durant deserves the title.

"You just can't guard him. Nobody can guard him," he said. "Nobody has guarded him this year."

            Sun or Thunder?

Gentry and All-Star point guard Steve Nash both said the Thunder will be a tough out in the playoffs.

"These guys could easily win a series and it doesn't matter whether they're (seeded) eighth, sixth or seventh or fourth," Gentry said. "They're playing great basketball."

Said Nash: "I see them as a very dangerous team. Their main guys have now played enough basketball that the deer-in-the-headlights situation isn't really accurate as it may be with other squads. They're ready. They're battle tested."

            Trend-setting

The Thunder has made a lot of noise straight up and against the spread on the road this season. They headed into Sunday night's game with 23 road wins after winning 23 total games last year.

The Thunder are 39-18-1 ATS in their last 58 road games vs. a team with a home winning percentage of greater than .600.

On the negative side, the Thunder are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games playing on zero day's rest.

In contrast, the Trail Blazers are 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games playing on zero day's rest.

The Trail Blazers are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600.
Trail Blazers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

The under is 14-3-2 in the Thunder's last 19 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

The under is 7-0 in Trail Blazers last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

The under is 12-2-1 in Trail Blazers last 15 vs. a team with a winning SU record and 11-3 in Portland's last 14 home games.

            Injury report

As previously mentioned, Roy is questionable after leaving Sunday's game with a knee injury. Seldom used power forward Jeff Pendergraph also missed the game with an illness. He is also questionable.

Oklahoma City's starting center Nenad Krstic was questionable entering Sunday night's game against Phoenix with a right knee contusion. Reserve forward Nick Collison has started in his place and Serge Ibaka, a rookie from the Congo, has played well lately.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks (-1, 189)

The Bucks suffered their first loss since leading scorer, rebounder and starting center Andrew Bogut went down for the season Saturday night against the Celtics.

And while no one is underestimating Bogut’s impact, no one is counting Milwaukee out either.

"Scotty (Skiles) was doing a terrific job before that and now he continues to do a terrific job," Celtics bench boss Doc Rivers told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "They play so hard. Part of their talent is the energy they play with every night. My first year in Orlando we had a team similar to that.

"No one could actually identify how we were winning or what it was. People back then were reluctant to identify energy as a talent. That's a very difficult talent to counteract."

A team with energy as one of its chief strengths is always a good bet late in the regular season.

              Pick: Bucks

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers (+4, 210.5)

About three weeks ago, Indiana coach Larry O’Brien vowed that his club would play hard down the stretch. Turns out he’s a man of his word.

The Pacers are 10-2 straight up over their last 12 games and 15-4-1 against the spread over their last 20.

The secret to Indy’s success? The 3-point shot.

As Indianapolis Star reporter Mike Wells points out, O’Brien loves to space the floor and bomb from beyond the arc.

The Pacers are averaging 119 points over their last four games and they’ve gone over the total in four of their last five games.

              Pick: Over

NBA Playoffs: Opening round betting trends
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s never too early or late to prepare for the playoffs. Like preparing for a marathon, it’s best to put ourselves into the best possible condition we can as we make a season ending dash for the cash.

With help from our trusted database, let’s examine four time-tested proven theories that have lined our pocket during the opening round of playoffs since 1991. Here’s what the machine has to say:

                Eight-seeds are behind the 8-Ball

For the most part, No. 8 seeds in the NBA playoffs are teams that likely scratched and clawed their way into the post-season. Not good enough to be seriously considered threats against top-seeded opponents but just barely better than the dregs of the league.

Rest assured their life expectancy is not long at all. They’ve lost nearly 75 percent of time (33-95 SU) in games against No. 1 seeds since 1996.

In fact, only the 1999 New York Knicks, the 2007 Golden State Warriors and the 1994 Denver Nuggets were good enough to pull the rug on top seeded foes and advance to second round.

Worse, they are 6-29 SU and 10-22-3 ATS in the postseason with a losing record in opening round games, including 3-11-1 ATS when taking double digits.

And you can virtually write them off in games against No. 1 seeds that are off back-to-back SU and ATS wins. These guys scratch out of the match with alarming regularity, going 2-22 SU and 6-18 ATS, including 0-14 SU and 1-13 ATS whenever the 8-ballers are off a spread loss of more than five points in their last game.

                Upset losers are winners

No, it’s not an oxymoron. It’s a powerful handicapping edge. It occurs whenever a team was upset as a favorite in an opening round game and is at home in the game immediately thereafter.

They are 46-28-2 ATS in these situations. If they were upset at home in this round and return home they improve to 34-19-2 ATS, including 24-10-1 ATS if off a loss of five or more points – and 15-3-2 ATS when laying five or more points in this role.

Don’t be afraid of these chalkbusters because they don’t lose their composure. Instead they almost always elect to dig down deep and respond with ease in games after being embarrassed.

                Double-digit dogma

Surprisingly, in the right role, double-digit underdogs do well in opening round contests, especially when playing off a playoff loss. These overweight puppies are 25-14-1 ATS in this role, including 21-9-1 ATS if they took 8 or more points the previous game.

These same guys are also 17-6 ATS off a playoff loss when taking double digits from a non-division foe, including 15-3 ATS against sub .795 opponents.

Granted, these dogs aren’t exactly the pedigree puppies but they tend to come up big against disinterested favorites not capable of chopping heavy lumber.

Losing teams continue trend in postseason

The psyche of teams that are not playing well comes immediately to the surface during the opening round of the NBA playoffs. Teams riding a three-game, exact-loss skein are one punch away from being counted out.

With glass-like jaws, these swirling teams are just 4-25 SU and 6-23 ATS away from home. They are also 13-31-2 ATS as dogs on their way to the canvas.

Worst of all, road dogs of more than six points on a three-game, exact-losing skid are 2-18 SU and 3-17 ATS. Last year Detroit was counted out at Cleveland, as well as New Orleans at Denver.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (105, 8)

Is it a career revival or just a hot start?

That’s the question Jays backers are asking themselves about centerfielder Vernon Wells after watching him club four homers and drive in seven runs in his first five games this season.

You have to understand the early skepticism. The Jays would have traded away Wells, one of the most highly paid players in the majors, for a bun-less hot dog last season.

Wells dealt with shoulder and wrist injuries in 2009 and saw his homer total drop to 15.

"He's been awesome, absolutely great," Toronto manager Cito Gaston told the Canadian Press. "It's just what we needed. You don't expect him to hit home runs like that, but something close would be nice."

While Wells and the Jays are sure to come back down to Earth soon, expect the high to carry over into its home opener.

                    Pick: Jays

Boston Red Sox at Minnesota Twins (130, 9)

Weren't the Twins supposed to miss All-Star closer Joe Nathan? New ninth-inning man Joe Rauch is four for four in save opportunities and the Twins are 5-1 entering Sunday’s finale vs. the White Sox.

"No surprise," Nathan told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "As long as (Rauch) can get off to a good start and get his head right, anything can happen. And this is just about as good a start as he could have to get his confidence and mind right to get a tough out when it comes."

Yes it’s early, but you have to love the early numbers if you’re a Minnesota fan: Bullpen ERA of 1.47 and 10 homers off Twins bats in just six games.

Boston’s relievers haven’t been nearly as good and the group has cost Sox backers a few winning tickets already this season.

It’ll be difficult for Terry Francona’s boys to stop Minnesota’s early season momentum playing against them in the Twins’ home opener and first-ever game at the new Target Field.

                    Pick: Twins
