    Fox Saturday Baseball

The first Saturday of the Major League Baseball season gets the Fox treatment with three games being shown regionally at 3:00 p.m. EDT. American League East powers do battle in Tropicana Field as the Yankees take on the Rays, while National League Central foes face off in the land of beer and brats. Also, the Mariners make the trip to Arlington to play against the Rangers.

    Yankees at Rays

Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the line for this contest up with the Yankees as $1.55 road favorites (risk $155 to win $100) with a total of 8 ½. The Rays can be had for a healthy plus-145 return (risk $100 to win $145).

Tampa Bay (3-1, +140) showed the ability to come from behind twice against the Orioles to start the season. Yet the Rays couldn’t find a way to get around some shoddy calls from the umpires on Thursday night to fall 5-4 as $1.60 home faves to Baltimore.

Last night's series opener showed that the Rays have the firepower to contend with the Yanks as they won 9-3 as $1.05 home pups. David Price was locked in with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

The Rays will give the ball over to Wade Davis, who showed great promise as a September call-up last season. He went 2-2 with a 3.72 earned run average in six starts in 2009. Davis was much more dominant on the mound in Tropicana Field, going 1-1 in four starts and 23 strikeouts to just seven walks.

Davis has one career start against the Yankees, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work en route to a 10-2 home loss back on Oct. 4 of last season.

C.C. Sabathia will take to the mound for New York (2-2, +45) on Saturday afternoon with redemption on his mind. The Yankees’ ace looked shaky on opening night in Boston, lasting just 5.1 innings and giving up five earned runs on six hits in a 9-7 loss. The only positive for Sabathia is that he didn’t get hitched with the “loss,” saving that honor for Chan Ho Park.

The redemption factor for Sabathia also coincides with facing those bullies in Tampa Bay as he went 0-2 with a 5.84 ERA in four starts against the last year. New York didn’t do well in those games on the whole with a 1-3 mark. The totals went 2-2 in those games.

Tampa Bay has not feared many southpaws at the Trop, going 34-24 over the last two seasons. And a 9-5 mark in the Rays’ last 14 games against lefties. The ‘under’ also posting a 9-5 mark in those tilts as well.

    Cardinals at Brewers

St. Louis (3-1, +195) was one of the many teams that failed to get the sweep in its season opening series. After dropping 11 runs on Monday and crossed the plate six times on Wednesday night. Yet the Cards could only muster one run against Bronson Arroyo as they lost 2-1as $1.05 road faves to Cincinnati.

The Cards were able to steal Game 1 of this series thanks to two runs in the top of the ninth inning against Trevor Hoffman to win 5-4 as $1.05 road favorites.

The Cardinals will entrust the starting duties of Game 2 of this series to Jaime Garcia. Chris Carpenter was supposed to get the start in this contest, but Tony LaRussa opted to give him an extra day of rest. Garcia is making his first start since July 20, 2008 against San Diego. He tossed five innings of five-hit ball, giving up three earned runs in a 9-5 win over the Padres.

Milwaukee (2-2 -3) opened its season with a series win over the Rockies in Miller Park. The only loss the Brew Crew suffered was a 5-3 decision on Monday as $1.05 home faves. Yovani Gallardo took the loss in that game by giving up three earned runs in seven innings of work. Gallardo will get the ball on Saturday afternoon, but don’t look for any miracles to happen since he is 0-2 with an ERA of 5.70 in four career starts against the Cards.

LVSC has tabbed the Brewers as $1.55 home faves with the total coming in at eight. Bettors looking to take St. Louis to win outright can expect a return of plus-145 on their investment. This series has been fairly even with both teams winning nine games last season. The ‘under’ went 10-7-1 those fixtures. Road teams have been the way to go at the betting window as of late since they’ve won seven straight in this head-to-head series.

Milwaukee has been profitable as a home “chalk” against left-handed pitchers over the last two years, evidenced by a 29-20 mark. In day games, however, the Brewers have lost six of their last seven tilts as home faves against southpaws.

    Mariners at Rangers

The good folks at LVSC have installed the Mariners as $1.30 road faves with a total of nine. Gamblers can take Texas (2-2, -121) to pick up the outright win at plus-120.

Seattle (1-4, -300) comes into this game after being brought back down to reality after losing three of four on the road to the Athletics to open the 2010 campaign. The M’s were confused on several occasions by Oakland’s lefty Brian Anderson in the 6-2 loss to close out the series. Compounding matters for the Mariners is a series opening 6-2 loss in Arlington in a game they were never appeared to want to win.

If there is any positive for the Mariners going into this test, it’s that Felix Hernandez is taking to the mound on Saturday afternoon. He lasted 6.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits to guide Seattle to a 5-3 win as a $1.52 road “chalk.”

When you look at Hernandez’s numbers from last year, you can understand why the M’s are favored. “King Felix” was 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA last April and is 4-1 with a matching 2.38 ERA in six starts against the Rangers in 2009.

Texas started the year with a great come-from-behind win to start the season. But a pair of losses to the Blue Jays just might have made team president Nolan Ryan to eat his prediction of a 92-win season.

Matt Harrison will try to help the Rangers get back on track. Not a bad choice considering that he’s gone 7-4 in 15 career home starts. You’d probably want to shade back on the ‘over’ for this one since his ERA in those 15 starts is 5.82.

Despite the decent numbers for Harrison, Seattle just might make him its personal whipping boy. The Mariners have been road favorites against left-handers six times in 2009. They went 4-2 in those contests. The ‘under’ was 5-1 in that stretch.

Texas has seen the ‘under’ go 5-2 in its last seven home games that they were listed as a pup.

                Weekend of Wagering Possibilities

The top sports story of the weekend will be The Masters, following the exploits of Tiger Woods and some of the oldies but goodies like Tom Watson, Fred Couples and Bernhard Langer. One name quietly lurking is Phil Mickelson, who came into Augusta with little fanfare, having played without distinction in 2010. Bookmaker.com will have daily head to head matchups to wager on.

The NHL regular season concludes this weekend and Stanley Cup spots are still up for grabs. The Western Conference has all eight of its contestants, but Los Angeles, Detroit and Nashville have to work out who will occupy slots five thru seven.

The Eastern Conference is less settled and the final team in could come down to Rangers at Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

This is the last weekend of the regular season in the NBA before the playoffs commence next Saturday and Western Conference looks like I-5 in Los Angeles area during rush hour. Other than the Los Angeles Lakers, not one spot is secure among the other seven competitors and several will make their case for advancement the next two days.

The East is bit more boring, but matters still need to be decided. Who finishes third, Boston or Atlanta, with the winner potentially avoiding Cleveland until the conference finals. Milwaukee and Miami are two smokin’ teams in the East and somebody has to finish in fifth and catch the loser of Celtics and Hawks fallout. The last team to make the playoffs could well be decided when Chicago visits Toronto Sunday evening.

UCF112 takes place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and the two biggest fights on the card are title bouts. The light-heavyweight fight has champion BJ "the Prodigy" Penn, who is thought to be almost unbeatable. Penn has few weaknesses, but Phil Nurse who is in Frankie Edgar’s corner, thinks he found a few chinks in the armor.

“B.J. is awesome; he really, really is, and no one is going to say he’s not,” Nurse said. “But there’s always somebody up-and-coming, and I think Frankie’s that guy. There are times when things turn around and I think that time is now.” Penn is a -775 favorite to retain title over Edgar.

The middleweight crown is also at stake as Anderson "the Spider" Silva defends his title against Jiu Jitsu master Demian Maia. The Brazilian is thought to be little more than a sacrificial lamb, being the third choice after Vitor Belfort and No. 1 contender, Chael Sonnen were unavailable due to injury. Silva is 10-0 and has successfully defended his title five times and is -780 favorite over Maia.

In case you haven’t heard, Arena Football is back. Fifteen teams now make up the league, a combination of the original AFL and a few AF2 members. The season has advanced to week 2 with Orlando a 2.5-point underdog at Bossier-Shreveport and Dallas at Tulsa, with the home team a 6.5-point underdog.

Oddsmakers and bettors have struggled with the new teams and some of the old teams not the same as perceived. Last week Iowa opened as one-point home favorite and were expediently bet down to seven point underdogs when a noted AFL handicapper released Chicago as his play over Iowa. The Rush won easily 61-43.

Another huge line move was Tampa Bay at Tulsa. Many AFL fans and bettors remember The Storm as a power and they went from 2.5-point underdogs all the way to unthinkable nine-point road favorites. That didn’t play well in Tulsa as the Talons won 69-58. Unless the sports bettor has done their homework, tread carefully in the AFL waters until more is known about all the teams.

Major League Baseball heads into its first full weekend. The New York Yankees got the NFL’s version of harder schedule for being World Series champions. After opening in Boston, the Yanks are spending this weekend in Tampa Bay (10-9 last three years) and the Rays want to prove they should be in conversation with them and the Red Sox. When New York has home opener next week AL West title contenders Los Angeles and Texas visit.

Minnesota got off to fast start in Anaheim with 3-1 record and will try to bruise division rival Chicago in the second weekend of April, before anticipated home opener at new outdoor Target Field on Monday. The Twins have lost 12 of last 20 at U.S. Cellular Field.

In the National League, St. Louis travels north to Milwaukee in Central Division showdown. The Cardinals continue their road trip facing the Brew Crew on FOX Saturday afternoon and on ESPN Sunday night. The Redbirds are 10-6 at Miller Park the last couple of years with the UNDER 12-3-1.
Last is the Subway Fresh Fit 600 in the desert Saturday night, at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, AZ. The track is a one-mile raceway considered both a short and flat and Jimmie Johnson is the obvious favorite to win, having taken the checkered flag four times in six races run at PIR since 2007.
