    Daily Sports Roundup: April 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The BoSox take on the Royals, the Sprint Cup Series races down in Phoenix, and The Masters offers up third-round action.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has eight games on its schedule for Saturday, with New Jersey at Indiana, Atlanta at Washington, Detroit at Charlotte, Philadelphia at Memphis, Dallas at Sacramento, Golden State at the Clippers, Boston at Milwaukee, and San Antonio at Denver. The Nuggets (52-27 SU, 33-40-6 ATS) are looking to lock down the second seed in the Western Conference, and could end up playing the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs. Denver is riding a four-game winning streak heading into Saturday, and they lead the season series with San Antonio 2-1. The Nuggets, though, fell to the Spurs 111-92 as a 6-point home favorite when the teams last met on February 11. Tim Duncan had 16 points in that win.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Yankees continue their AL series in Tampa Bay on Saturday, while the rest of the Junior Circuit slate has Minnesota at the White Sox, Cleveland at Detroit, Seattle at Texas, Toronto at Baltimore, Oakland at the Angels, and Boston at Kansas City. The Red Sox will send Josh Beckett to the mound for their Saturday matchup; righthander Beckett took a no-decision against the Yankees in his first start of the season, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits over his 4 2-3 innings. The Royals will counter with ace Zack Greinke; righthander Greinke held the Tigers to just one earned run on six hits over six innings in his season debut.

On the NL schedule for Saturday it'll be the Cubs at Cincinnati, Washington at the Mets, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Philadelphia at Houston, San Diego at Colorado, Pittsburgh at Arizona, Atlanta at San Francisco, and the Dodgers at Florida. It'll be Vicente Padilla getting the ball for Los Angeles on Saturday; righthander Padilla was knocked around by the Pirates in his first start of the season, giving up seven earned runs on six hits over his 4 1-3 innings of work. The Marlins will go with Josh Johnson on Saturday; righthander Johnson gave up four earned runs on five hits over his five innings in a loss to the Mets on Monday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up 11 games on Saturday on the second-last day of its regular season, with Carolina at Boston, Edmonton at Los Angeles, Toronto at Montreal, the Islanders at New Jersey, Buffalo at Ottawa, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Florida at Tampa Bay, St. Louis at Nashville, Dallas at Minnesota, Calgary at Vancouver, and Phoenix at San Jose. The 50-25-6 Coyotes are just 2-3 against the 50-20-11 Sharks so far this season, but they enter Saturday's matchup riding a three-game winning streak; Phoenix beat Los Angeles 3-2 last time out. The Sharks have won two straight games, and they beat the Canucks by a score of 4-2 Thursday.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series will compete under the lights on Saturday night at the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway. Jimmie Johnson has won four of the last five races at Phoenix, and he's pegged as the 18/5 Vegas favorite to take the checkered flag on Saturday night. Denny Hamlin is next on that odds list at 17/2, with Mark Martin (who won this race last season) rounding out the Top 3 to visit victory lane at 8/1. Jeff Gordon (19/2), Kurt Busch (10/1), and Jeff Burton (10/1) are also near the top of the odds list for Saturday's event. Greg Biffle, who sits second in the points race behind Johnson, is listed at 15/1.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the third round of The Masters gets underway on Saturday, with Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood tied atop the leaderboard at 8-under. Tiger Woods shot a 2-under 70 on Friday, and he sits in a third-place tie at 6-under with K.J. Choi, Ricky Barnes, Anthony Kim, and Phil Mickelson. Fred Couples shot a 3-over 75 on Friday, and Tom Watson turned in a 2-over 74; those two Tour veterans are tied for ninth place at 3-under through the first 36 holes of the event.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards – Joe Johnson (thumb) was probable heading into Friday’s game and played.

Detroit Pistons at Charlotte Bobcats – Richard Hamilton (ankle) missed Friday’s game and is doubtful. Rodney Stuckey (ribs) missed Friday’s game and is questionable. Stephen Jackson (rest) did not play on Friday and is questionable.

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets – George Hill (ankle) was questionable going into Friday’s matchup and did not play. Chauncey Billups (quad) and Carmelo Anthony (ankle) are both probable. Kenyon Martin could return to action (see note below).

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers – Monta Ellis (flu) has missed the last four games and is doubtful. C.J. Watson (ribs) is questionable. Craig Smith (back) did not play Thursday and is doubtful.

Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins – Joni Pitkanen (lower body) missed Thursday’s game and is questionable.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens

Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild – Owen Nolan (leg) missed the last two games and is questionable. Marek Zidlicky (arm) was out for the team’s last three games and is questionable. Niklas Backstrom took a puck to the throat on Thursday but is probable.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Sixers-Grizzlies game has dropped one point from its opener and now stands at 206. Philly has played to three straight overs and the last two in this series have gone over.

The Rockies opened as -172 favorites against San Diego for Friday’s game but that number can be found as low as -149 now. The total in that game has also moved from an opener of 10 to 9.5.

The opening moneyline for the Pirates-Diamondbacks game in Arizona had the home team favored at -230 but now that number has elevated to as high as -250 on some boards.

      Who’s hot

Milwaukee is 7-0 ATS in its last seven games.

The Giants are 4-0 this season, earning 4.19 units on the moneyline.

Ottawa is 7-3 in its last 10 outings.

      Who’s not

The 76ers are 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games.

Houston is 0-3 this year heading into Friday.

The L.A. Kings are 4-6 in their last 10, dropping 4.41 units on the moneyline.

      Key stat

1997 – The last year golfer Tom Watson had a Top 10 finish at the Masters. In that year, Watson was in 10th place after 36 holes of play and finished the tournament in fourth place. Watson is 3-under par at this year’s Masters and tied for ninth heading into Saturday. He may not win the major, but there might be some odds for a Top 5 finish that could be worthy of a look.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kenyon Martin could return for the Nuggets on Saturday. While he may not have much of an impact in the game, Martin’s return would be huge for Denver heading toward the playoffs. K-Mart has missed the last 18 games and the Nuggets have gone 12-6 SU but only 6-10-2 ATS. Martin brings a down low defensive presence that has been lacking for Denver.

      Games of the Day

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

"Look, if you're going to coach worried about injuries, don't play your guys at all ever. Sit ‘em for 82 games all year. Don't have them practice. Don't have them play. What's the difference? Do their injury chances go up tonight as opposed to playing last week? Every time you play, yeah you have a chance of getting hurt.”

-- Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said about resting his players now that his team has clinched the No. 2 playoff seed in the East.

      Tips and notes

      - Englishmen Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood are tied for the Masters lead heading into Saturday. The two are good friends and played a practice round together earlier in the week and apparently Poulter lost money to Westwood on seven of the nine holes. Pouler joked that he “would like to get some back [Saturday].” Poulter, who won the WGC match play event earlier this year, said that win gave him an “extra boost” heading into this week and said he feels “very comfortable” at Augusta and can be “aggressive” on the course.

      - The Braves ran into a scheduling trap in their second series of the season. After playing a night game at home Thursday, Atlanta traveled out West to meet the Giants for a day game on Friday. Chipper Jones said “our biological clocks are going to be messed up for quite a while.” It didn’t help that the Bravos were taken to 13 innings in Friday’s game, a 5-4 loss. The team could be very tired heading into Saturday's and Sunday’s matchups.

      - The Grizzlies have completely checked out of the season and their coach knows it. Lionel Hollins said after the Dallas game that his team wasn’t willing to “sacrifice and play hard”. Memphis has lost six of its last seven games (1-6 ATS) and dropped its last three by double digits.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets are finding their stride just in time for the NBA Playoffs. The Nuggets grabbed a huge victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, defeating the defending NBA champs 98-96 as 1.5-point home favorites Thursday.

The win was Denver’s fourth straight (3-1 ATS in the span) and lifts the team back to the top of the Northwest Division and into second place in the Western Conference – just a half a game ahead of the Dallas Mavericks.

"For us, our playoffs started a week ago," veteran point guard Chauncey Billups told reporters following Thursday’s win over Los Angeles. "We've got to play ugly, we've got to fight, scratch and claw to try to get out [of the regular season] the best way we can. That's absolutely what we did."

There are just three games remaining on the Nuggets schedule, luckily with two of those coming inside the Pepsi Center where they are 33-6 (19-19-1 ATS) on the season. Denver has won two of the three meetings with San Antonio this season, going 2-1 against the spread.

          Pick: Denver

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers

Baron Davis has big business plans for the Los Angeles Clippers this offseason. With only three games left in Los Angeles’ nightmare season, perhaps the best business decision Davis can make is to shut up and play hard.

The always-colorful guard has been the bane of many bettors’ existence this season. Davis has missed time due to a bad back in the past few weeks and has cracked double figures in just three of his last seven games. His lackluster season has much to do with the Clippers’ current seven-game losing streak and 27-52 record (33-45-1 ATS).

"I thought I'd just be able to come in, plug in and play, do what I do. It hasn't been that,” Davis told ESPN. “It hasn't really been my personality being infectious on the organization. It was more like 'You come here, you adapt to what we're doing. Kind of sit and wait your turn.' So hopefully my turn is this next year."

Los Angeles is coming off a loss to fellow bottom feeder, Sacramento, and has covered in just three of its past 10 outings. Against the Warriors this year, the Clippers have lost two of their three meetings and have failed to cash in for delusional backers in two of those games.

          Pick: Golden State

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning (-135, 5.5)

How do you make a pick between two teams that aren’t playing for anything – figure out which comes into the game with the most motivation.

Both of these non-playoff bound squads are 2-4 in their last six games and both are coming off upset wins on Thursday. The Panthers have won the last three in this series and are looking to finish the season on a high note.

"We only have a couple games left," said Nathan Horton. "We're trying to finish strong. It's tough to come to the rink. We're not where we want to be. It's tough playing these games, but that's our job."

In Tampa Bay’s last win, the Lightning surrendered a 3-0 lead but held on to win the game 4-3. Despite a budding star in 20-year-old Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay head coach Rick Tocchet knows this team has a long way to go.

"There was a lot of passion," Tocchet said after Thursday’s game. "I like the passion, but it was just undisciplined. We've got a lot of work to do."

Florida has outscored the Lightning 13-6 in their last three meetings.

              Pick: Panthers

              Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild

Mike Modano is arguably the greatest American-born hockey player to ever play the game. He could be lacing up the skates for the last time in his career on Saturday.

It’s fitting Modano might end his career where it started – in Minnesota. And Modano feels just as comfortable playing up north as he does in the South.

"The (Minnesota) fans have been great ever since we moved and every time we return, it's been a great reception," said Modano. "I'm guessing it's going to be just as tough as tonight to say goodbye to them."

The Wild may let Modano score a goal just for old time sake and you can bet the fans will be giving standing ovations at every break. Heck, they might even be rooting for Dallas.

Minnesota has dropped 8-of-12 and two straight at home. The Stars have won the last two in this series and will get another for their legendary member on Saturday.

              Pick: Stars

                Hockey Night in Canada betting
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens

                The basics

Hockey’s oldest rivalry faces off one final time this season.

The Maple Leafs, losers of three in a row (0-2-1) and five of six (1-3-2), are guaranteed to finish 29th overall and will give up either the first, second or third overall draft pick to the Boston Bruins.

Montreal, at 39-33-9, has won three of 10 (3-4-3) since a six-game winning streak. Montreal could still finish anywhere from sixth to ninth. A win or overtime loss will send the Habs to the postseason.

                A homecoming?

According to Kevin McGrann of the Toronto Star, Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson adjusted his goaltending rotation to allow Montreal-born Jean-Sebastien Giguere to play against the Canadiens.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” Giguere told the Toronto Star. “I didn’t get to play there much in my career.

Giguere has only played in Montreal three times in his career, posting a 2-0-1 (tie) record.

Giguere is 0-3-2 on the road as a Maple Leaf and 0-12-5 on the road this season.

                Talkin’ totals

After a string of eight consecutive games between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens went over the total, the last three contests have stayed under.

Toronto has had difficulty scoring goals lately, netting just two in its last three games.

The Canadiens have scored two or less goals in seven of their last 10 games.

If the Canadiens have not secured a postseason berth by game time, expect a playoff-type atmosphere at the Bell Centre.

                Power outage

The Canadiens have one of the best power plays in the league at 22 percent but have gone just 3-for-29 (10.3 percent) in their last nine games.

“Your special teams can win you games and we're not doing that right now,” Montreal forward Brian Gionta told reporters during a loss a few weeks ago.

Toronto has the league’s worst penalty kill at 74.6 percent but has improved over the season. The Leafs are 35-for-39 (89.7 percent) in their last 12 games.

Toronto’s power play, however, is 0-for-20 and two for its last 51 (3.9 percent).

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

                The basics

It once had potential to be the biggest game of the season for both teams, but Saturday night’s game will have no playoff implications.

The Flames (40-31-10) will finish no higher than ninth and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Vancouver, at 48-28-5 has locked up the Northwest Division and will finish third overall.

                Backhanded compliment

"I think the Sedin twins are maybe the two best players in the world on their backhand," said San Jose coach Todd McLellan.

Henrik Sedin leads NHL with 108 points. Daniel Sedin missed time with injury but is averaging 1.31 points per game.

It is the play of Henrik and brother Daniel that have led to the Canucks becoming the highest-scoring team in the Western Conference, scoring an average of 3.22 goals a game.

                Home sweet home

Vancouver is averaging 3.53 goals per game at home this season and allowing only 2.08. The Canucks’ average home-winning margin of 1.45 goals is the best in the NHL and their 29 home wins are tied for the most in the league.

Since Saturday’s contest is a meaningless one, look for Vesa Toskala to get the start for the Flames.

Toskala’s overall goals against average is more than a full goal higher than starting goaltender and team MVP Miikka Kiprusoff.

                Defenseless Canucks?

Calgary is one of the lowest scoring teams in the league, averaging 2.44 goals a game, but the Flames will likely be playing against a Canucks defense comprised mainly of Manitoba Moose players.

Regulars Willie Mitchell and Christian Ehrhoff are out of the lineup. Shane O’Brien and Aaron Rome suffered injuries during Vancouver’s last game.

"I think we have to get back to basics here," Henrik Sedin told reporters. "We have to play better.”

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers (-175, 9.5)

Detroit pitcher Nate Robertson has only made one start in the last year and a half.

The Tribe’s starting pitcher, Mitch Talbot, has made three big league appearances in his career (all in 2008) and compiled an 11.17 ERA in those games.

Talbot pitched for the Rays in 2008 and one of his three outings came against the Tigers where he surrendered five runs in 2.1 innings with five walks.

In Bonderman’s only start of 2009, he was tagged for eight hits and six earned runs in 4.0 innings of work.

Needless to say, these starters aren’t going to go very deep into the game which should equate to some bullpen runs.

                    Pick: Over

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds (-125, 8.5)

What happened to the Carlos Zambrano that was a Cy Young candidate year in and year out?

Big Z started Opening Day for the Cubbies and gave up eight earned runs (six in the first inning) in only 1.1 innings on the mound.

"I left some pitches over the middle," Zambrano said. "When you do that at this level, you're going to get crushed."

Zambrano may be on the decline for good. Going back to last year, Big Z has surrendered at least four runs in six of his last 12 starts.

Zambrano has a 54.0 ERA coming into this game while Cincy starter Aaron Harang is boasting a tenth of that at 5.40. Balls should be flying around Great American Ball Park on Saturday.

                    Pick: Over

                      This Day in Baseball
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 10 in Baseball History...

1913 - In their first official game as Yankees, New York loses to Walter Johnson and the Senators 2-1. After giving up an unearned run in the first, Johnson begins a string of shutout innings that will reach a record 56 before the St. Louis Browns score in the fourth on May 14.

1947 - Jackie Robinson becomes the first African-American in the modern major leagues when the Dodgers purchase his contract from Montreal.

1961 - The new Washington team loses its first regular-season game 4-3 to the White Sox.

1962 - Dodger Stadium, the first major league arena privately financed since Yankee Stadium in 1922-23, opens in Chavez Ravine. With 52,564 fans on hand, the Dodgers inaugurate the $22 million facility with a 6-3 loss to the Reds.

1962 - The Houston Colt .45s, in the first major league game played in Texas, beat the Chicago Cubs 11-2 before 25,000 fans. Roman Mejias led Houston's offense with two home runs.

1964 - Demolition begins on the Polo Grounds to clear the way for a housing project.

1971 - The Phillies debut in new $49.5 million Veterans Stadium by beating Montreal 4-1. Don Money connects for the park's first home run.

1973 - Kansas City opens its new park, Royals Stadium, with a 12-1 rout of the Rangers. The game is attended by 39,464 fans braving 39-degree weather.

1976 - The Brewers trail 9-6 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning at packed County Stadium. Because of crowd noise, Yankee reliever Dave Pagan does not hear the time-out called by first baseman Chris Chambliss. Pagan pitches to Don Money, who hits a grand slam. Because of the time out, the home run is nullified. Money bats again, and hits a sacrifice fly. The final score is 9-7 and the Brewers protest the game.

1979 - J.R. Richard sets a major-league record with six wild pitches, but he strikes out 13 Dodgers and is a 2-1 winner.

1980 - In front of a crowd of 53,313, Sixto Lezcano hits a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning to give Milwaukee a 9-5 win over Boston and Dick Drago. Lezcano also opened the 1978 season with a grand slam, the first player to do it twice on Opening Day.

1981 - In his first game for Chicago, Carlton Fisk belts a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead the White Sox to a 5-3 win over his former Red Sox teammates at Fenway Park.

1982 - Under icy conditions, the Cleveland Indians opened the season at Municipal Stadium with an 8-3 loss to the Texas Rangers before 62,443 fans. Five hundred tons of snow had to be removed from the field; the game-time temperature was 38 degrees with a wind chill of 17.

1989 - Ken Griffey, Jr. hits his first major league home run in Seattle's 6-5 win over the White Sox. He and his father, a reserve outfielder on the Reds, are the first father-son duo to play in the major leagues at the same time.

1989 - Dave Stieb pitches a one-hitter against the Yankees, giving him three one hitters in his last four starts dating back to the previous September.

1997 - The Cubs fall to 0-8, the worst start in the club's 122-year history, following a 1-0 loss to the Marlins at frigid Wrigley Field. Florida pitcher Alex Fernandez, making his first appearance in Chicago since he left the White Sox over the winter as a free agent, is two outs away from a no-hitter when pinch-hitter Dave Hansen legs out an infield hit off the pitcher's glove. Fernandez settles for the one-hitter.

1998 - The Yankees draw the largest regular-season crowd ever at the new Yankee Stadium as 56,717 attend the home opener against the Oakland Athletics. Then the Yanks crush the club scoring mark by winning the 17-13 slugfest.
