    Daily Sports Roundup: April 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Thunder play host to the Nuggets, while the White Sox do battle with the Indians, and the Braves get a visit from the Cubs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 13 games on its busy slate for Wednesday, including Denver at Oklahoma City in a matchup of playoff-bound Western Conference clubs. The Nuggets (50-27 SU, 32-39-6 ATS) won their second straight game on Saturday, getting past the Clippers in Denver in a 98-90 victory. Carmelo Anthony led the way for the Nuggets with 24 points in that game, while Nene Hilario picked up 18 points. Denver is 2-1 vs. Oklahoma City so far this season; the Nuggets blasted the Thunder 119-90 in Denver as a 7-point favorite when they played on March 3.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Wednesday: Boston at Toronto, Washington at Orlando, New York at Indiana, Philadelphia at Miami, Atlanta at Detroit, Utah at Houston, Golden State at Minnesota, Charlotte at New Orleans, Memphis at Dallas, Portland at the Clippers, San Antonio at Phoenix, and New Jersey at Milwaukee. The Nets (11-66 SU, 31-44-2 ATS) found themselves back in the loss column in their last game on Sunday, falling 109-99 to the Wizards in Washington. Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut (arm) will miss the rest of the year.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Yankees continue their series in Boston in American League action on Wednesday. Also on the Junior Circuit slate for the day: Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Texas, Detroit at Kansas City, Seattle at Oakland, Minnesota at the Angels, and Cleveland at the White Sox. Chicago will send Jake Peavy to the mound for Wednesday's matchup; righthander Peavy made three starts for the White Sox last season, going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in those contests. The Indians will counter with Fausto Carmona; the righthander struggled badly for Cleveland in 2009, going just 5-12 with an ugly 6.32 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 125.1 innings.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be Colorado at Milwaukee, San Francisco at Houston, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Washington, Florida at the Mets, St. Louis at Cincinnati, San Diego at Arizona, and the Cubs at Atlanta. Chicago will go with Ryan Dempster against the Braves; righthander Dempster went 11-9 last season with a 3.65 ERA and 172 strikeouts over 200 innings. Jair Jurrjens, who posted a 14-10 record in 2009 to go along with a 2.60 ERA, goes for the Braves; Jurrjens fanned 152 over 215 innings pitched last year.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League has five games on the schedule for Wednesday, with Toronto at the Rangers, Columbus at Detroit, St. Louis at Chicago, Colorado at Edmonton, and Nashville at Phoenix. The 46-28-6 Predators won their second game in a row last time out, getting past the Red Wings by a final score of 4-3 in Detroit on Saturday. Ryan Suter had the OT winner in that contest. The 48-25-6 Coyotes slipped past the Oilers 3-2 at home in a shootout in their last game on Saturday, with Matthew Lombardi and Daniel Winnik scoring in regulation time. Phoenix is 2-1 against Nashville on the season.

      Lines off the board

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat – Jermaine O’Neal (knee) has missed the last four games and is questionable. Samuel Dalembert (hip) and Andre Iguodala (foot) were both probable heading into Tuesday’s game but played.

Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons – Joe Johnson (thumb) will not play in Wednesday’s game. Richard Hamilton (ankle) has missed the team’s last four games and is questionable.

Charlotte Bobcats at New Orleans Hornets – Stephen Jackson (hamstring) and Nazr Mohammed (back) were both probable heading into Tuesday’s game but only Jackson played.

Golden State Warriors at Minnesota Timberwolves – Monta Ellis (flu) did not make the road trip with the team and is not expected to play on Wednesday.

Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Clippers – Brandon Roy (arm) and LaMarcus Aldridge (infection) both missed practice this week and are probable for the game.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings – Rick Nash (upper body) missed Monday’s game and is questionable. Kris Russell (arm) missed Monday’s game and is questionable.

Colorado Avalanche at Edmonton Oilers - Peter Mueller (head) is out indefinitely after sustaining a head injury two games ago. Sam Gagner (hip) has missed the last two weeks but is questionable for Wednesday.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Knicks-Pacers game opened at 219 and has been bet up to 220.5 at most shops. New York has played to three straight overs while Indiana has cashed two consecutive overs.

An opening total of 211 in the Nuggets-Thunder game has dropped to 210 on some boards. Eight of the last 10 games in this series have gone over.

The Astros opened as +115 underdogs against San Francisco for Wednesday’s game but that number can be found as high as +136 now. The total in that game has also moved from an opener of 8 to 7.5.

Most sportsbooks are offering the total for the Dodgers-Pirates game at 8.5 after opening at 8. The last four games in this series have gone over.

The total in the Yankees-Red Sox game surfaced at 9.5 but every board is now working with 10 and some even have 10.5.

The Rays opened as -185 favorites versus Baltimore but that number can be found as high as -215 in some markets. The total in that game has also moved from an opener of 8.5 to as high as 9.5.

The Rangers opened as -160 favorites against the Blue Jays but that number has escalated to as high as -180.

      Weather report

There is a 70 percent chance of rain during the Indians-White Sox game in Chicago on Wednesday with the wind projected to be blowing in from right field at 13 mph.

Scattered storms are expected to bring a 30 percent chance of precipitation during the Tigers-Royals and the 20 mph wind blowing out to left-center could create some runs.

There is a 60 percent chance of precipitation for the Rockies-Brewers game and the wind is expected to be blowing out to right field at 14 mph.

      Who’s hot

Portland is 8-2 SU and 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 outings.

The New York Rangers are 5-1 SU in their last six, earning 4.68 units on the moneyline.

The Bucks are 5-0 ATS in their last five games.

      Who’s not

The Celtics are 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games.

Edmonton is 1-5 SU in its last six outings.

      Key stat

8-0 – Suns record when Jason Richardson scores at least 26 points. Phoenix is 7-1 ATS in the same scenario.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shawn Marion will be absent from the Mavericks starting lineup on Wednesday as he deals with a strained oblique muscle. Dallas could end up resting Marion until the playoffs with its deep rotation. Jason Terry is the likely candidate to start in place of Marion and rookie Rodrigue Beaubois could see extended playing time. The Mavs are 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS without The Matrix this season.

      Game of the Day

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns (-6.5, 210.5)

      Notable quotable

“I've been wanting to play point guard for about 12 years now. I might finally get my chance.”

-- Spurs center Tim Duncan said after the team lost point guard George Hill on Sunday.

      Tips and notes

      - Pirates manager John Russell is experimenting with batting his pitcher in the 8-hole this season. So far so good, as Pittsburgh begins the season 1-0 after a win over L.A. on Monday. The unorthodox lineup allows Russell to use Andrew McCutchen second in the order instead of leadoff. Russell says “it creates a good balance in our lineup" and “will help set us up to get to the middle of our order." The Pirates went 13-20 in 2008 and 2-4 last year with the pitcher hitting eighth.

      - The Mavericks are in a four-way tie for second place in the Western Conference and according to Dirk Nowitzki and Rick Carlisle there is no letting up or resting players down the stretch. Coach Carlisle said despite having a playoff berth he doesn’t want his team “to feel comfortable” and wants it “to keep an edge.” Nowitzki said he was going to play the last handful of games “like the playoffs are already here.” Dallas could be a play-on team with Memphis, Sacramento and the Clippers on the docket.

      - After Monday’s practice at Auburn Hills that was labeled a “bickering-fest” between players and coaches and saw Pistons coach Jon Kuester punt the ball into the stands, Charlie Villanueva sounded off via Twitter. Villanueva said on his account it “has been a very frustrating year, it just only got worse 2day.” Detroit was on an 11-game slide (1-10 ATS) heading into Tuesday’s game and this is clearly a team in turmoil that you don’t want to back.

        Wednesday six-pack

-- Orioles hit three solo HRs, lost 4-3 to Rays, going 1-12 with runners in scoring position. Crawford hit a walk-off single in 9th for the win.

-- Barry Zito allowed only four baserunners in six shutout innings as Giants shut the Astros out 3-0 at Minute Maid Park.

-- Daniro Gallinari scored 31 points, 19 in third quarter, as the Knicks beat sliding Boston in NYC, handing Celtics their 4th loss in five games.

-- Milwaukee Bucks clinched their first playoff berth in four years on Tuesday; they've had a terrific season.

-- Chris Bosh of the Raptors suffered facial fractures in Raptors' loss at Cleveland; he's staying in hospital there overnight for observation.

-- Over last 11 Opening Days, A's have had 11 different starting LFs.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a steamy spring day

        13) Just for the record, Duke was in the Final Four three years before Mike Krzyzewski took over in Durham; its not like he took over a team that was a hoops wasteland. He's done great things-- Duke's program is the best of shotclock era-- but they had hoops at Duke before Coach K.

        12) Yesterday I said DePaul was running a Keystone Cops search for the new basketball coach; today, they pulled a rabbit out of their hat as they hired Clemson's Oliver Purnell as their new coach. Great move by them.

        11) Purnell has been a college head coach for 22 years: he has total record of 392-279 (.584), broken down this way: 44-42 at Radford, 57-33 at Old Dominion, 155-116 at Dayton, 138-88 at Clemson. The man wins.

        10) My point is this: DePaul hired a better coach than St John's did.

        9) If I'm the Clemson AD, I'm talking to Davidson's Bob McKillop tonite and signing him to a contract tomorrow. Would be an excellent move.

        8) Boston College hired Steve Donahue from Cornell; my question there is can the man recruit players who can beat Duke-Maryland-Carolina? He's been in the Ivy League the last 15 years, recruiting non-scholarship kids. This is going to be a lot different. I'm not saying he can't doing it, but he's swimming with sharks in the deep water now. No more kiddie pools.

        7) Random disclosure: I thought UTEP would beat Butler in first round of NCAAs, and when Miners led that game by six at half, still felt that way. What a run by the Bulldogs, who lose only two players to graduation. It remains to be seen if Oregon can lure him away from Hinkle Fieldhouse.

        6) Bad news for Nationals Monday; John Lannan threw 72 pitches in the opener, and Phillies didn't swing-and-miss once. Not good.

        5) Toronto's Shawn Marcum had no-hitter thru six innings at Texas in the Blue Jays' opener, but couldn't get out of the 7th inning with a lead, and Toronto started season with a brutal 5-4 loss in Arlington.

        4) A model in New York City named Brandi Irwin spends $47,000 a year on hair extensions-- seriously. She gets them done three times a year and they add two feet to the length of her hair. Must be nice to be rich.

        3) Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com contributes this factoid: The four starting pitchers in first two games of Bronx-Boston series have contracts worth total of $353.6M; their stats this week: 17 runs allowed in 20 IP.

        2) KJ Choi/Matt Kuchar are unlucky bastards who are playing partners of Eldrick Woods Thursday/Friday at Augusta. Stricker/Poulter are in a group just ahead of them, so they could have some noise distractions to deal with in the first two rounds, also.

        1) After watching President Obama shoot hoops on TV Saturday, then throw an awful first pitch Monday, I'd suggest he stay on the hardwood.

Game of the day: Spurs at Suns
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns (-6.5, 210.5)

            History lesson

This will be the third and final regular season meeting between the Spurs and Suns.

The home team has won both previous matchups, but the Suns have gone a perfect 2-0 ATS, most recently dropping a 113-110 decision as 4-point underdogs in San Antonio on the final day of February.

They’ve met five times since their 2008 first-round playoff series, which the Spurs won in five games. San Antonio has gone 3-2 ATS in the teams’ last five regular season meetings with the over cashing at a 3-2 clip.

            Streaking Spurs

San Antonio has caught fire down the stretch, winning 16 of its last 21 games overall entering Tuesday’s action.

Pointspread success has gone hand-in-hand with the Spurs’ high level of play. They’ve posted a 15-4 ATS record over their last 19 contests.

Manu Ginobili is encouraged by his team’s recent strong play, and he’s the biggest contributing factor. Ginobili has scored over 20 points in eight of his last nine games.

“Two months ago, it wasn’t even in our wildest dreams to come here and win a game by 18 against the Lakers,” Ginobili said after the Spurs knocked off the Lakers in L.A. on Sunday. “But we’re doing better now and we’re playing hard. Our defense has really stepped up, and the difference was that we made the shots we had to make.”

            Suns rising

The Suns are in a four-way tie behind the Lakers in the Western Conference standings, but they won’t be able to move any higher than fourth place because the Lakers already have the Pacific division wrapped up.

That’s important because the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 first-round matchup will likely play Kobe and Company in the second round.

The Suns just completed a five-game road trip that saw them win the first four contests before dropping a lopsided decision in Milwaukee on Saturday. The loss didn’t come as much of a surprise for Steve Nash.

“This is the worst team to play on the last game of a long trip,” Nash said. “They needed this win and we’ve been on a long road. It’s a tough team to face at this juncture of a trip.”

That marked the end of the Suns’ 10-game winning streak, but they remain an impressive 24-6 straight up dating back to Jan. 28.

            Point of attack

Both teams are dealing with key injuries right now.

The Spurs were already thin at the point with Tony Parker sidelined, but now they’re going to have to go without George Hill. There’s talk that Hill could even miss the rest of the season after spraining his ankle in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Hill had emerged as a consistent scorer off the bench and was a steady force in the starting lineup while Parker was out. Hill had reached double figures in scoring in 20 of his last 22 games before leaving Sunday’s game.

Ginobili slid over to point in the second half against the Lakers with Keith Bogans occupying the other guard spot. Roger Mason Jr. is the first option off the bench at the point but he’s playing with a torn ligament in his right hand.

“You're not going to hear me say it's affecting my ball handling,” Mason s told the San Antonio Express-News. “But I have a torn ligament, you know?”

Fortunately for the Spurs, Parker returned to action against the Kings on Tuesday but he will have to be eased back into playing shape after missing 16 consecutive games.

The Suns continue to play without starting center Robin Lopez. He’ll be re-evaluated later in the week, but may not be able to return until the playoffs.

Lopez was having a fine sophomore campaign, averaging 8.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

            Key trends

The Spurs are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games against Western Conference opponents and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games played away from home.

The under is 12-4-1 in the Spurs’ last 17 games played on no rest, as is the case here.

The Suns are 15-6-1 ATS in their last 22 games against the West, but just 4-12-1 ATS in their last 17 played on three or more days’ rest.

The over is a perfect 7-0 the last seven times the Suns have returned home from a road trip lasting at least a week.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat

Dwyane Wade is getting a lot of credit for the eight-game winning streak the Heat are enjoying, as he should. He’s scored over 30 points in four of Miami’s last five games.

But maybe the real indicator that the Heat are a better team than before the All-Star break is that they’ve won three games during the streak when Wade failed to reach 20 points.

“This has been great,” Wade told the Miami Herald. “No matter what the score is, and no matter what is going on in the game, you feel that you can win because you've been playing so well together, and we all believe in each other.”

A balanced attack and a better commitment to defense are the driving forces behind Miami’s late season surge. The Heat are 6-1-1 against the spread during the win streak and the under is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

              Pick: Under

Washington Wizards at Orlando Magic (-14, 194)

No team holds opponents to a lower field goal percentage than the Orlando Magic. Still, coach Stan Van Gundy spent the entirety of Monday’s practice on his team’s defense.

Van Gundy isn’t happy, according to the Orlando Sentinel, with some of the bad habits he’s seen from his players at the defensive end over the last few games.

You wouldn’t think this team was 7-2 over its last nine games.

Don’t be fooled by Washington’s 107-point outburst against the Nets. The Wizards are a weak offensive team and Orlando will expose that.

              Pick: Under

                      Second-Half Surges

Hockey writer Pierre LeBrun advocates looking at teams’ second-half records to best predict playoff performance. LeBrun (courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau) provides a breakdown of the top teams in the second-half of the season, as well as the top teams since the Olympic break.

The top three second-half teams are the Washington Capitals (27-4-6), Vancouver Canucks (24-11-3), and Phoenix Coyotes (23-12-3).

The bottom three second-half teams occupying playoff spots are the Boston Bruins (15-17-5), New Jersey Devils (15-16-6), and Colorado Avalanche (19-17-1).

The top three teams post-Olympics are the Detroit Red Wings (13-3-2), Washington Capitals (10-2-4), and Phoenix Coyotes (11-4-1).

The bottom three teams post-Olympics: the Colorado Avalanche (7-9-1), Philadelphia Flyers (7-9-3), and Ottawa Senators (7-8-1).

Washington is +385 to win the Cup at 5Dimes, Vancouver is +1000, Detroit is +1100, and the surprising Phoenix Coyotes are +2000.

                      Olympic-Sized Scoring Droughts

Ken Campbell of the Hockey News observes that not only has scoring dropped since the Olympics, but the NHL could be without a 50 goal-scorer for the first time since the lockout.

Not including shootout goals, scoring has dropped from 5.50 goals per game before the Olympics, to 5.17 goals after the Olympics.

Campbell acknowledges that teams are tightening up for the playoffs, but says some of the league’s star players are wearing down because of the extra two weeks of hockey.

Alex Ovechkin has four goals since the Olympic break, Crosby has five and Patrick Marleau has six.

                      Huet? No Way!

There is no longer a goaltending controversy in Chicago. Antti Niemi will be Chicago’s starting goalie heading into the playoffs.

"(Niemi's) playing well," coach Joel Quenneville told reporters. "It was nice to show him some confidence (with back-to-back starts) and he responded with the game we were looking for."

Niemi has started seven of the Blackhawks’ last eight games. He has three shutouts and allowed one goal twice.

The Blackhawks rookie is 23-7-3 with a 2.16 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. Niemi is tied for third in the NHL with seven shutouts despite only starting 31 games.

                      Range-rs of Outcomes

The New York Rangers can finish anywhere between sixth and 11th place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers have gone 5-0-1 in their last six games and currently control their own destiny. The typically low-scoring Blueshirts have averaged four goals a game during that span.

In other positives for New York, Michael Obernauer of the New York Daily News points out that, on Saturday, the Rangers won for the first time this season when trailing after two periods (1-24-2), and that assistant captain Ryan Callahan could be ready to return from a knee injury sooner than expected.

The Rangers are the top team ATS this season according to cov.com statistics, with a 44-33 record netting backers +22.01 units.

                      On the Schedule

This week, I've identified the games potentially having the biggest playoff implications.

Fri. April 9, Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers, Sun. April 11, New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers

Currently in ninth, the Rangers can thank the schedule makers for still being able to control their own destiny. Sweeping the Flyers in the home-and-home series will likely mean a trip to the postseason.

Sat, April 10, Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks

Sorry Flames fans, but this one will probably be meaningless. Colorado needs two wins or two Calgary regulation losses to clinch a playoff spot. If the Flames can get by the Sharks and Wild, and the Avs slip up against the Canucks, Oilers and Blackhawks, the final regular season Hockey Night in Canada game could be a meaningful one.

Sun. April 11, Buffalo Sabres at New Jersey Devils

New Jersey is in a fight with Pittsburgh for the Atlantic Division title, and Buffalo has a chance to finish second overall. Finishing second or third in the Eastern Conference guarantees that you won’t have to face the Washington Capitals until the conference finals (if at all).

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings

In baseball, the media has labeled Albert Pujols “The Machine” but that nickname should probably be duplicated for the NHL and slapped on the helmet of Detroit rookie goalie Jimmy Howard.

Prior to Sunday’s 4-3 loss where veteran Chris Osgood positioned himself between the pipes, Howard had started 25 consecutive games for the Red Wings.

Howard has been remarkable in his inaugural season while helping Detroit get to its 19th straight postseason, compiling a 34-15-10 record with a 2.30 goals-against average.

Expect Howard and the Wings to put up an inspirational effort for the fans in the team’s regular season home finale.

Detroit could also be aided by the absence of the Blue Jackets’ leading scorer, Rick Nash, who missed Monday’s game with an upper-body injury. With the Jackets far removed from the playoffs, many of Columbus’ younger players are also expected to see extended ice time.

                        Pick: Red Wings

Nashville Predators at Phoenix Coyotes (-140, 5)

This matchup could be a Western Conference first-round playoff preview.

That being said, the game could end up looking like a skate-around with both teams not wanting to tip their hand to the other. Those types of games are usually snoozers to watch.

The Coyotes offense has been inconsistent all season and has scored just four regulation goals in the last three games. Leading scorer Shane Doan has registered zero points during that span and hasn’t netted a puck since Jan. 31.

"I think we're to the point we're joking about it now," Doan said. "There is not a lot else you can do. It's as frustrated as I've ever been with scoring goals."

Phoenix went 0-for-9 on power play opportunities on Sunday and has only one man-advantage goal in its last six games.

Nashville has sharpened its defensive skills while surging toward the postseason, holding opponents to 1.8 gpg during the last 10 games. This effort has produced a 2-8 over/under mark for the Preds in that timeframe.

                        Pick: Under

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates (+140, 8)

After one game in the books, the Pirates are in first place in the NL Central and don’t seem to be carrying any pressure heading into this season as expectations are not high.

"We had a team dinner and got a chance to air some things out, we're focused and not paying too much attention to all that stuff [in the media]," said Ryan Church. "I think a lot of guys on this team have heart and a lot of pride in what we're doing, and you don't want to embarrass yourself, so give it everything you got."

After busting onto the scene last season with 21 homeruns in 82 games, lifetime minor leaguer Garrett Jones slugged a couple of longballs in the opener Monday.

"It's only one game, but it feels good," Jones said. "It's a long season and there's a lot of games left, but I'm going to try to keep the same approach."

Joe Torre is banking on Clayton Kershaw to be the ace of the staff this season but there is still much to be proved by the 22-year-old southpaw.

Pittsburgh has won three straight home games against the Dodgers, all as underdogs, and will make it a fourth on Wednesday.

                              Pick: Pirates

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals (+120, 9)

The offenses were definitely ahead of the pitching on Opening Day as the 13 games compiled a 9-2-2 over/under record.

The Tigers-Royals matchup contributed to that hefty over mark as Detroit lit up three K.C. relievers for six runs in the top of the seventh inning on Monday.

"We didn't do our job," Roman Colon said of the blown lead. "It was just a tough game. We played well. It just didn't work out good. It was a tough game."

There won’t be many times this season that the Royals bullpen does get the job done.

For Wednesday’s game, wind is expected to blow from 20-22 mph out to left-center which will aid Tigers’ homerun hitters Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Brandon Inge.

Four of the last five games in this series have sailed over the posted total.

                              Pick: Over
