Final two MLB clubs start season

Two teams have yet to make their debut for the 2010 campaign and they will take care of that business today on Florida’s west coast. Baltimore and Tampa Bay christen their seasons with AL East matchup, where every game counts in a division top heavy with the Yankees and Red Sox.
After years of floundering, the Orioles have stopped their free spending ways on free agents who never quite fit and who never helped Baltimore actually win.

Instead, with team president Andy McPhail calling the shots, the Orioles are putting their cash into player development and its paying off. The outfield is oozing with talented youngsters like Adam Jones and Nick Markakis. Felix Pie is still he still is just 25-years old, with major league experience, having made the roster hitting the ball, his biggest weakness.

Orioles’ fans are also excited about the future with three young pitchers, Brian Matusz, Brad Bergesen and Chris Tillman, all seemingly destined for long big league careers. For now, veteran Kevin Millwood will be the leader of the pitching staff with his vast experience and he will be the opening game starter after 13-10 season with a 3.67 ERA in 31 starts in Texas. Millwood is 2-2 vs. Tampa Bay with an ERA of 6.16.

The Rays returned to earth after 97 win season and World Series appearance in 2008, but still managed a winning record.

Tampa Bay’s offense is led by Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria, but if they are going to contend in the division, Carlos Pena and B.J. Upton are going to have to be more a factor.

Pena did hit 39 home runs and drove in 100; however the team needs more bases hits after his batting average slipped again, down to .227 in 2009.

When Upton was first drafted by Tampa Bay, attitude was one of the warning signs related to him and last year it was on display batting just .241 and having more than a couple pouting sessions. Still just 25, Upton has to start approaching his job like a major leaguer for a team that is 53-23 against the money line in home games against division opponents.

James Shields draws the Opening Day assignment for the Rays, his third straight as the “old man” of the starting pitchers at the ripe age of 28. Shields does not have overpowering stuff, but he frequently gets into the seventh inning or beyond working both sides of the plate with his fastball and has the best changeup in the American League that he will throw on any count.

Unlike the fans evidently, Shields loves Tropicana Field, where he is 25-14 with a 3.40 ERA. He doesn’t mind the birds on Baltimore’s cap either, posting 6-2 record with a 2.92 ERA in 15 career starts against the Orioles.

Bookmaker.com has Tampa Bay as -200 ML line favorite in their maiden voyage of 2010, with total Ov8.5. The Rays have been awesome in this spot, 52-14 as a home favorite of -150 to -200 over the last two years and they are 80-33 at the Trop against right-hand pitchers.

Baltimore has lost 14 of 18 at Tampa Bay and is unsightly 46-98 against AL East opponents since 2008. Millwood in his career is 13-3 UNDER as an underdog of +150 or more.

First pitch for both teams to start the season is at 7:10 Eastern with the Rays 57-26 at home in the first half of the season.

          Today’s Betting Information

The Cleveland Cavaliers might start resting some of their starters with just over a week left in the regular season and word has it LeBron James and Anderson Varejao are questionable for that reason, explaining why the Cavs went from nine point home favorites to six.

The wagering public jumped all over Boston at the Knicks, taking them from five-point fave all the way to 7.5. Maybe the C’s 21-1 and 17-5 ATS road record in division games the last three years had something to do with it.

The Chicago Bulls are 13-4 OVER in home games after covering three of their last four against the spread, which is as good explanation why their total against division rival Milwaukee moved up 2.5-points from opening 187.

Also huge Totals moved occurred on Oklahoma City visiting Utah, starting at 208.5 and leaping to 213. The Jazz are 12-3 OVER vs. division opponents this season, however the average total score is 209.2 points per game.

Only one movement of note in the NHL and it’s a little strange. Montreal opened as a -130 money line favorite at the New York Islanders and have fallen 10 cents to -120. Why this seems peculiar is Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak is off back-to-back shutouts, playing his best hockey of the year by far and the Habs have won last five contests out on Long Island.

In the eyes of the sports bettor, Baltimore has little chance in season opening game at Tampa Bay. The Rays opened as -160 ML favorites and the money is pouring in with Tampa Bay a -230 or better favorite at most sportsbooks.

Houston’s offense could well struggle without Lance Berkman in the lineup, nevertheless it’s hard to fathom the Astros would fall from -140 to below -130 with Wandy Rodriquez facing Barry Zito at home.

Edwin Jackson makes his Arizona debut, taking on San Diego. He will face Chris Young of the Padres and the attitude is wait and see on the Diamondbacks, as they are -150 ML choice, down 25 cent from opening figure.

          NBA Betting Nuggets

View ******* article for top system plays.

The Milwaukee Bucks are 18-5 ATS after successfully covering the spread in three or more consecutive games this season.

          MLB Betting Nuggets

Play Over on teams like the Padres when the total is 8.5 to 10, who were marginal losing team from last season (46% to 49%) playing a bad team (25-46%) from last year, after a loss. (39-13 L12Y)

Tampa Bay is 80-33 in home games against right-handed starters over the last two seasons.

          Hockey Betting Nuggets

Play Under on road teams against the total like the Flyers and Avalanche, having lost six or seven of last eight contests, when playing in April. (49-18 L5Y)

New Jersey is 20-5 after two straight Under’s.

            All Systems Go in NBA

The professional basketball regular season is rapidly drawing to a close and after an off day, nine games are back on the schedule. Five of these matchups in particular have caught our attention, each with a system that has proven to be a very good winner over time, including a totals system that is 82.1 percent. Sides and totals from Bookmaker.com.

            Toronto (+6.5, 206) at Cleveland

The system for this Eastern Conference matchup is sound, with home favorites having a +7 or more point differential 29-10 ATS against an average team (+/- 3 PPG differential), after a loss by six points or less. The problem is the Cavaliers have wrapped up almost everything they need for the playoffs, with the best record in the league a formality at this juncture. Reports have LeBron James as questionable and the line has fallen three points to present level.

Boston (-7.5, 208.5) at New York

For all the grief the Celtics have taken this year for bring too old, one constant since Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen hit town has been their play on the road within the division. Boston is 21-1 and 17-5 ATS against Atlantic Division opponents and they are in favorable position this evening as well. Play Against home underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points, who allow 99 or points a game on the season, against opponent after allowing 105 points or more two straight games. This system is mouth-watering 50-19 ATS the last 14 years.

            Milwaukee (+6, 189) at Chicago

The Bucks suffered a devastating loss when center Andrew Bogut had an ugly and awkward fall on breakaway dunk against Phoenix, in which he suffered a broken hand, dislocated elbow and sprained wrist. Milwaukee will have to press on without him, still trying to move into fifth position in the East. Chicago (37-39 SU) is fighting for its playoff life, trailing Toronto by a game for the last position in the conference, having won six of eight after 10-game losing streak. When the total is between 180 and 189.5 points and the home team has a winning percentage between 40-49 percent on the season, in April games, the OVER is 39-16.

Oklahoma City (+6, 213) at Utah

With just five games left, Utah and Denver are in a dead heat for the Northwest Division lead at 50-27. The Jazz get a tough opponent in Oklahoma City, who has won four in a row and six of seven and is only one game behind in the loss column to Utah and three other teams in the West. However, road underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points, having covered five or six of their last seven against the spread, in a game involving two good teams (60% to 75%) are 27- 63 ATS the past five years, including lamentable 2-9 ATS this season.

San Antonio (-6.5, 193) at Sacramento

The Spurs are playing their best basketball of the season, having won five of six facing a schedule built to cause teams to fail. San Antonio laid out the Lakers on Easter 100-81 and this late-season rush has a more offensive-minded club, ranked 14th at 101.2 points per contest. The Spurs continue their three game Western sojourn in Sacramento, who is 26th in points allowed in the NBA at 104.2. Consider the total when the number is between 190 and 199.5 points and a good offensive team (98-102 PPG) takes on a horrible defensive team (102 or more PPG), after allowing 85 points or less. The play is the OVER, with 32-7 record since 1996.

Oklahoma City Thunder (48-28) at Utah Jazz (50-27), 9 p.m.

Sports Network) - The jumbled Western Conference playoff picture will continue to shake out tonight when the Oklahoma City Thunder visit Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Jazz.

The Thunder, who are attempting to sweep the season series with Utah for the first time in 27 years, are currently the sixth seed in the West, but just 1 1/2 games behind four clubs, Dallas, the Jazz, Denver and Phoenix, for the second spot. Meanwhile, Utah and Denver are also trying to fend off Oklahoma City in the Northwest Division race.

The Jazz are already 0-3 vs. the Thunder this season and another setback would give Oklahoma City its first sweep over Utah since 1982-83, when they were based in Seattle.

The Thunder won their fourth straight game on Sunday, topping hapless Minnesota when Kevin Durant scored 40 points to set a new franchise single- season record in scoring, as Oklahoma City defeated the Timberwolves, 116-108, at Ford Center.

Durant, who now has 2,258 points this season, surpassed Dale Ellis' mark of 2,253, set in 1988-89 for the then-Supersonics. The third-year Texas product has also set the single-season franchise mark for free throws made in a season with 690.

"It's a great accomplishment for me. It's something I'm always going to remember, but it's my teammates...that make me better in practice every day, without them all this wouldn't be here," said Durant of his feat.

The 21-year-old Durant added nine rebounds. Jeff Green had 16 points in the win, while Russell Westbrook provided 10 points and a career-high 16 assists.

The Jazz, meanwhile, lost for the first time in four games against the West's top seed on Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers. Lamar Odom finished with a season- high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds in that one, as LA took a 106-92 win.

Carlos Boozer had 20 points and 18 rebounds, while Deron Williams added 20 points and 10 assists for the Jazz.

"I'm proud of us, that we fought back after a bad start," Boozer said. "We dug ourselves a hole, but we cut it to four points early in the fourth quarter."

Forward Andrei Kirilenko sat for the 10th time in 12 games for Utah with a strained calf and remains questionable for tonight as the Jazz shoot for their 10th straight home win.
