Boston Celtics at New York Knicks [7:30 PM ET]

Celtics (-5.5, O/U 208.5): Boston is fighting hard down the stretch of the regular season, as they are trying to catch Atlanta for the #3 seed in the Eastern Conference. Boston is currently 48-28 SU and 31-43-2 ATS overall this season. The Celtics are 24-13 SU on the road this year, easily one of the best road teams in the NBA this season. To be more specific, Boston is 21-1 SU on the road in Atlantic Division play of late. The Celtics have already beaten the Knicks 3 times this season, so it's odd to see this spread be so low today. In the 3 other games this season, the Celtics were between a 9-10 point favorite. The Celtics come into tonight off a hard fought win over the Cavaliers, so some might think this is a letdown spot for Boston. That SU win over Cleveland snapped a 3 game SU losing streak. The Celtics have lost their past 4 games ATS as the listed favorite. All 5 starters average double digits for the Celtics this season, led by Paul Pierce. Pierce averages 18.2 PPG this season, including shooting 85% from the free throw line this season.

Celtics are 4-0 ATS last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
Under is 6-1 last 7 games as a road favorite.

                          Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 110 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Knicks: New York is back home after a 5 game road trip that saw them go a paltry 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS. Many will question whether the Knicks are playing with any purpose this late in the season. After all, the Knicks are 27-49 SU and 35-40-1 ATS overall this season. Only 4 teams in the Eastern Conference have a worse record than New York does. Heck, some New York fans would prefer them to lose every game going forward as it gives them a better chance for a higher draft pick. One player who isn't quitting on this season is C David Lee. Lee averaged 24.6 PPG and 11.6 RPG during this recent road trip. For the season, Lee leads the team with 20.4 PPG and 11.9 RPG. The Knicks are 16-22 SU this season at home, including winners of 3 of their past 4 games SU. Unfortunately New York has only played 3 home games in nearly the past month. The Knicks are 8-9 ATS as the listed home underdog this season. For New York to win any games to end the season, they will have to improve their defense. The Knicks have allowed their past 7 opponents to score at least 103 PTS.

Knicks are 21-9 ATS last 30 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Under is 6-0 last 6 vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Tracy McGrady (knee) is questionable.
F Wilson Chandler (groin) is out.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 107

Oklahoma City Thunder at Utah Jazz [9:00 PM ET]

Thunder: If you polled the rest of the potential Western Conference playoff teams, the one team nobody would want to play is the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are a young team that is gaining more and more confidence as the season wears on. This Thunder team is hot right now, winners of their past 4 games SU. Oklahoma City is 48-28 SU and 45-31 ATS overall this season. The Thunder are currently in 6th place in the Western Conference, only 1.5 games behind the logjam of teams tied for 2nd in the Conference. Oklahoma City already owns a SU win in Utah this season, winning by 10 PTS in late November as an 8 point underdog. The Thunder are 19-11 ATS this season as the listed underdog. In their current 4 game winning streak, the Thunder have scored at least 109 PTS in each contest. F Kevin Durant has been simply amazing this season, and he just became the franchise leader in PTS scored in a season, surpassing Dale Ellis in 1988-1989. Durant is 2nd in the NBA in scoring, averaging 29.7 PPG this season. PG Russell Westbrook and F Jeff Green are the other Thunder players averaging double figures in PTS this season.

Thunder is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.
Over is 4-0 in Thunder last 4 road games.

                          Key Injuries - None.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Jazz (-6, O/U 210.5): Despite playing well of late, revenge will certainly be the word of the day for Utah tonight. Utah has lost all 3 meetings SU to the Thunder this season, and are on the verge of being swept by the Thunder franchise for the 1st time in 27 years. Utah has been playing great of late, winning 7 of their past 10 games SU. The Jazz are 50-27 SU and 47-27-3 ATS overall this season, and are currently tied for 2nd in the Western Conference playoff standings. These final 5 games will be crucial for the Jazz, as there are 4 teams tied for the 2nd spot in the Western Conference. Utah is coming off one of their worst performances of the season, losing SU by double digits to the Lakers. Playing in front of their home crowd will be a huge advantage tonight, as the Jazz are 31-8 SU at home this season. Utah needs to handle their business better within their division, as they are only 7-8 SU in the Northwest Division. The Jazz have won 9 straight games SU at home, averaging 113.7 PPG in those contests. F Carlos Boozer leads the Jazz with season averages of 19.8 PPG and 10.6 RPG this season.

Jazz are 23-6 ATS last 29 games following a SU loss.
Under is 6-0 last 6 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

Key Injuries - F Andrei Kirilenko (calf) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 112 (Side of the Day)

                            Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 6, 2010 from Len Berman.

                            1. Quick Hits

No Hollywood ending. Duke beats Butler 61-59 in a thrilling game to win the national championship.
Among those elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame: Scottie Pippen, Chicago Bulls, Karl Malone, Utah Jazz, Lakers owner Jerry Buss, the late Dennis Johnson, who won championships in Seattle and Boston and legendary N.J. high school coach Bob Hurley, Sr.
The Red Sox have signed pitcher Josh Beckett to a 4 year $68-million extension.
Hot stuff. Albert Pujols of the Cards hit two homers on opening day. Atlanta phenom Jason Heyward homered in first major league at bat.

                            2. Almost

Can you imagine if Gordon Hayward's shot had dropped from half court for Butler to beat Duke? We would have been watching reruns of Hoosiers ad infinitum. And rightly so. I also might have had to update my best selling kids book The Greatest Moments in Sports. At all my book appearances I talk about Roger Bannister, the first to break the 4-minute mile. The morning of his big race he was in the hospital library. I always get a laugh when I ask, "name me one other athlete who was studying his books the morning of his big event." Well it turns out many of the Butler players were in class yesterday morning. I nearly had to yell "get me rewrite!"

                            3. Yakety Yak

I have to admit I was surprised by Tiger Woods news conference yesterday. I thought they would try to limit the discussion to mainly golf. But some news did evolve. He firmly denied ever taking HGH or performance enhancing drugs. He revealed that he played through a torn Achilles last year. And he finally acknowledged that he needs to show more appreciation for the fans. In the end, actions will speak louder than words which we've certainly had more than enough of.

                            4. Tuesday Tidbits

                            * Tough fans. During the opening day introductions at Citi Field the Mets training/conditioning staff got booed. The Mets won the game anyway.

*According to USA Today, opening day player salaries are down 17%. Pass the hat.

*They're scratching their heads in Oakland over the A's cutting their home run leader Jack Cust. It must be the stadium. They're been scratching their heads over the Raiders moves for years.

                            5. Two On The Aisle

You listen to a Yankee game and a Broadway show breaks out. When Curtis Granderson hit a homer in his Yankee debut, radio voice John Sterling announced it "something sort of grandish." That's a song from the show Finian's Rainbow. Here are some other possible home run calls.
*Everything's Coming up Roses (Gypsy) for Pete Rose.
*Ol' Man River (Show Boat) for Mickey Rivers.
*How are things in Glocca Morra (Again, Finian's Rainbow) for Melvin Mora.
*If I Were a Rich Man (Fiddler on the Roof) for Rich Gedman, Richie Allen, Bobby Richardson.

                              Tuesday six-pack

-- According to USA Today, baseball salaries are down 17% this year.

-- If I was baseball commissioner, every batting helmet would be shiny on Opening Day-- no
excuses for a filthy helmet like Manny Ramirez has. Go get a clean helmet or you can't bat. Its Opening Day, dammit.

-- 18 of the last 19 Masters winners played in final group on Sunday.

-- Butler is now 42-16 against the spread as a non-conference underdog since 1998; kids played their hearts out Monday night.

-- Where was CBS College Sports hiding former Georgia coach Dennis Felton all year? He was on the air Monday night and he's very good.

-- Total attendance at the Final Four Saturday/Monday: 142,228. This is a very popular/successful event. NCAA shouldn't mess with it.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                              13) College basketball is my favorite sport, so never like to see a season end, but this tournament was fun; lot of close games, and a 5-seed came within inches of the greatest ending in college hoop history. Interesting to see what Brad Stevens does now; his life won't be the same; he's going to get offers that Butler can't match financially, but Bulldogs lose only two of their core players, so they should be terrific again next season.

                              12) My point is this, as I think out loud at 2:53am; its better to be a big fish in a small pond, than to jump right into a bigger pond where sharks swim, which is what a job like DePaul can be unless you're connected in Chicago. If I'm advising Stevens, he's back with Butler next season.

                              11) Its a small point, but CBS should have had Dick Enberg as a part of One Shining Moment; one less shot of Jennifer Hudson wouldn't hurt. If CBS loses the tournament to ESPN, thats fine with me, but keeping it at 65 teams would also be a good idea, not that anyone cares what is right. They care about what will make them the most money.

                              10) Speaking of CBS: Please lose the overhead camera. I don't like having to take dramamine while watching TV in my living room.

                              9) Redskins hope the McNabb trade turns out as well as last time they traded for a Philly QB-- they dealt Norm Snead/Claude Crabb to Philly in 1964, for a fella named Sonny Jurgensen, who was a great QB. Quite the steal for Washington, but think the Eagles won this trade.

                              8) Listened to Jon Miller/Mike Krukow over the weekend on a Giants' broadcast; when Joe Morgan isn't around, Miller is brilliant. He's funny and sharp and everything he isn't on Sunday Night Baseball. Too bad.

                              7) Very cool that when a Texas Ranger hits a homer, they play the music from The Natural; 26 years later, it still hasn't lost its appeal.

                              6) How on God's green earth did Dr Jerry Buss get elected to Basketball Hall of Fame? For what? He's a rich guy who owns a great team-- so???

                              5) If I had a vote for Final Four MVP, I would've voted for Zoubek kid on Duke; he fouls constantly but rarely gets called. His physical play in the paint was huge Saturday-- Duke won because they're tough. Credit to them for winning, even if they do often get the benefit of the whistle. Kid like Zoubek does lot of the hidden things that help a team win.

                              4) That said, as much as I enjoy mascots, I would relish a chance to take Elin Nordegren's 7-iron and whack Duke's Blue Devil upside the head.

                              3) Boston College was turned down by coaches of Richmond/Dayton, so now they're scrambling, because they look stupid. DePaul's search looks like a Keystone Cops operation-- just hire Reggie Theus already. Oregon has a lot of money, but no one they've asked will take it. Maybe they'll wise up and hire Mike Dunlap, whose been an assistant in the NBA and was a big winner in Division II in the Denver area.

                              2) My point is this: Its no good being in a power conference if you're one of the bottom feeders-- the big fish in the smaller ponds can now win on the biggest stage, as Butler proved this year, and George Mason also did a few years ago. Schools like Oregon/DePaul/BC need to be more creative to find their coaches, but not lot of administrators are smart enough to do it.

                              1) By my count, its 192 days until basketball practice starts October 15. We've already begun preparation for next year-- hope you enjoy reading this site every day, not just during college basketball season, but college hoop is my favorite sport. Never like it when the season ends.
