Well yesterday was one heck of a profitable day.....MLB kicked butt.......Final 4 went 4 - 0.....whacked that parlay for a nice HIT.....But today is another day........So lets get'um again.

Grizzlies face playoff elimination at Orlando

The math says the Grizzlies are still in the playoff hunt. But it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out the odds are severely stacked against them.

Memphis will try and keep its fleeting hopes alive on Sunday when the Grizzlies take to the road to meet Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Memphis needs to win its remaining seven games while both San Antonio and Oklahoma City close out their seasons on long losing strings.

The Grizzlies could have picked an easier road venue to face a must-win contest. Orlando is 30-7 straight up at Amway Arena this season, 19-16-2 against the spread. The Magic lost just one of its eight March home games. Memphis is 16-20 SU on the road, and a respectable 20-16 ATS away from home.

A recent three-game losing skid hurt Memphis' chances significantly. The Grizzlies stopped the streak on Friday at home with a 107-96 win over the Hornets. Memphis carried 3 ½-point chalk into the contest. O.J. Mayo's 27 points led the boxscore for both teams, with the Grizzlies crushing New Orleans on the boards by a 56-41 margin.

Marc Gasol missed Friday's win after reinjuring his neck in Wednesday's loss to the Mavericks. Gasol is second on the team in rebounding with a 9.3 per game average, and will miss the rest of the season.

While the Grizzlies were stopping a three-game losing streak Friday, Orlando watched its three-game winning streak come to an end in a 112-100 loss at San Antonio. Three-point underdogs in the affair, the Magic watched a 56-54 halftime lead disappear in the third quarter when the Spurs held a 33-22 advantage.

Six Orlando players scored in double figures, but it wasn't nearly enough to counter Manu Ginobili's season-high 43 for San Antonio. The Spurs guard was 14-of-17 from the free throw line where San Antonio outscored Orlando, 20-12.

Memphis may not be in the best gym to try and keep its postseason dreams alive, but the Grizzlies are facing a team they have had good fortune against in recent battles. Lionel Hollins' crew has won the last three meetings with the Magic, SU and ATS, and seven of the last 10 while going 8-2 ATS. One of those wins came earlier this season when Orlando traveled to FedEx Forum on Jan. 25.

The Grizzlies won the game 99-94 thanks to holding the Magic to 15 points in the final quarter. Memphis opened as a one-point favorite before the spread closed with Orlando the two-point road favorite. Zach Randolph paced the Grizzlies with 23 points and 19 rebounds while O.J. Mayo chipped in 20.

The final score stayed well below the 205-point 'total,' sending 'under' backers to the pay window for the fourth straight time in the series. The 'under' is now 7-1 the last eight meetings.

Orlando's home games have stayed 'under' by a 20-16-1 clip while Memphis is 23-12-1 to the 'over' on the road.

Sunday's tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. (PT) and begins a three-game homestand for the Magic with the Wizards and Knicks trailing the Grizzlies into Orlando. Memphis will head home after the game to host the Rockets on Tuesday before hitting the road for games at Dallas and San Antonio.

Cavs visit Celtics, sprint towards NBA Finals

It’s NBA championship or bust for LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They visit the Boston Celtics on Sunday with just six games left before the playoffs.

The Cavaliers are 60-16 straight-up and 36-39-1 against the spread. They’ve already clinched home-court advantage in the Eastern Conference. Their magic number is one to clinch the league’s best record over the L.A. Lakers.

An NBA title would be the first in Cavaliers’ history, and the city’s first major championship since the old Browns won the NFL in 1964. Perhaps more importantly, it should help the Cavs retain the impending free agent James.

Cleveland last played on Friday night, a 93-88 home win over Atlanta as a 5 ½-point favorite. James had 27 points and he’s in a dead-heat with Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant for the scoring title (29.7 PPG).

The Cavaliers are 11-1 SU in their last 12 games, but just 4-8 ATS. They’re 0-4 ATS in their last four games, despite winning three of them.

Center Shaquille O’Neal has been out since Feb. 26 with a thumb injury. The team is starting power forward J.J. Hickson in the middle next to deadline acquisition Antawn Jamison. They’ve held their own up front despite being undersized.

O’Neal could be back by the playoffs, while Zydrunas Ilgauskas rejoined the team recently after being traded to Washington for Jamison. Throw in Anderson Varejao, and that’s a lot of big men for coach Mike Brown to shuffle once the postseason begins.

Cleveland is third in the NBA in points allowed (94.7 PPG). The ‘under’ is 10-4 in the last 14 games, with the team allowing 92.6 PPG.

The Cavs are 26-12 SU and 21-16-1 ATS on the road this year.

The Celtics (47-28 SU, 30-43-2 ATS) are one game behind Atlanta for third place in the East. Both teams want to avoid Cleveland in a potential second-round playoff matchup.

Boston hosted Houston on Friday night, losing 119-114 in overtime as an 11-point favorite. The Celtics have lost their last three games, all at home, and are 0-4 ATS in their last four.

The 233 combined points scored went ‘over’ the 202 ½-point total. There were 218 points scored before the overtime. Boston is still fourth in the league in points allowed (94.8 PPG), but also got torched for 109 points by Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Boston has lost 15 home games this year after dropping six each of the last two years. The 11-26-1 ATS home record is one of the NBA’s worst.

The Celtics are one of the biggest enigmas in basketball. They won the title two years ago, and were derailed last year by Kevin Garnett’s injury.

Garnett is a shell of his former self, while Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are also showing age. There’s some thought the team is saving itself for the playoffs, but it could struggle with Miami or Milwaukee in a first round matchup.

Boston won and ‘covered’ the first game between the teams on opening night in Cleveland. Cleveland is 2-0 SU and ATS the last two meetings. The only one in Boston was Feb. 25, with the Cavs dominating 108-88 as 2 ½-point ‘chalk.’ Pierce missed that contest.

The ‘over’ is 3-0 in the three meetings this year.

Varejao is questionable after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury. Boston is not reporting any injuries even though several players are banged up.

ABC will have the national coverage at 10 a.m. (PT) from TD Banknorth Garden. San Antonio at the Lakers will follow on ABC.

      Inside the Paint - Sunday

Sunday’s holiday slate is highlighted with two conference clashes, plus there are six other games to keep an eye on as well. Let’s dive right in with the televised tilts.
Cleveland (60-16 SU, 37-39 ATS) at Boston (47-28 SU, 29-45 ATS)

Gamblers start Sunday with a tough game to handicap, especially when you look at the current form of each club. We understand that Cleveland has gone 9-1 in its last 10, but it’s only 4-6 ATS during this span and that includes four non-covers in a row. After winning six of seven, Boston has dropped three straight games and all came at TD Garden.

Those following the Celtics this season know that they’ve been terrible ATS at home (11-27), especially as favorites. Meanwhile, Mike Brown and his troops have gone 26-12 SU and 21-17 ATS outside of Cleveland this season.

Cleveland has won and covered two of the three meetings against Boston this year, which includes a 20-point (108-88) road victory on Feb. 25. This game was tight after three quarters but the Cavaliers outscored the Celtics 35-14 over the final 12 minutes for the blowout win. The ‘over’ cashed in this contest and is now 3-0 in all three battles between the he pair this season.

Looking at the big picture here, this game is much more important to the Celtics considering Cleveland only needs to two wins or two losses by the L.A. Lakers to clinch homecourt advantage throughout the entire playoffs.

Meanwhile, Boston trails Atlanta by one game for the third seed in the East with seven games left and the Hawks own the head-to-head tiebreaker. And to make matters tougher, the Celtics will have to play four of the last six games on the road after this contest. Fortunately, Doc Rivers and company have been better away from home this season.

San Antonio (46-29 SU, 39-36 ATS) at Los Angeles (55-21 SU, 33-40 ATS)

The Lakers need two wins to lock up the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and with six games left, most would expect the Purple and Gold to accomplish that feat. Even though the top spot is in sight, Phil Jackson’s team looked sluggish in a recent road trip that watched the team go 2-3 both SU and ATS.

Los Angeles returned home Friday and notched an impressive 106-92 win against Utah as a 4 ½-point home favorite. The Lakers led by 17 after the first quarter and still coasted to an easy victory despite getting a less than stellar effort from All-Star Kobe Bryant (5-of-23, 25 points).

Including this afternoon game, the Lakers only face three other playoff teams to close the season. The Spurs haven’t clinched a playoff spot just yet, but they only need one win to do so. Greg Popovich’s team currently sits in the seventh position but they could wind up sixth or even eighth, which means they would face L.A. in the first round.

Los Angeles has defeated San Antonio two out of the first three meetings this season, which includes a 92-83 road victory on Mar. 24. The Lakers drilled 50 percent (10-of-20) of their 3-point attempts and the Spurs couldn’t buy a bucket (37.5%) from the field. Tim Duncan finished with just six points in the setback on 2-of-11 shooting.

San Antonio might not have the Lakers’ number but it has played well despite losing point guard Tony Parker (hand) to an injury in early March. The Spurs have gone 10-5 SU and 11-4 ATS over this span. Four of those losses came on the road, all against Eastern Conference opponents too.

The Spurs are on a bit of a roll coming into this affair, winning and covering four of their last five, and three of the victories were against the Cavaliers, Celtics and Magic. While those wins were nice, a loss at New Jersey (84-90) last Monday was disappointing.

Los Angeles opened up as a six-point favorite over San Antonio and the number seems fair considering they’ve won seven straight against the Spurs at Staples Center. That streak includes a 101-89 win on Feb. 8 without the duties of Kobe Bryant or Andrew Bynum. The combined 190 points slid ‘under’ the closing total of 192 ½. Total players should make a note that the ‘under’ is on an 8-2 run in this series, which includes all three games this season. The ‘over/under’ for today’s contest is hovering between 194 and 195.

        Yankees at Red Sox

The 2010 baseball season gets underway Sunday night with one of sports' best rivalries when the Red Sox host the Yankees. New York will have to wait until later in the week to raise the World Series banner from last season, as the Bombers open against Boston for the first time since 2005. The Sox, meanwhile, will try to bounce back after getting swept by the Angels in last season's ALDS.

CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees, looking to capitalize on his strong 2009 debut in the Bronx. The southpaw finished 19-8 with an ERA of 3.37, as Sabathia has yet to win 20 games in a season in his nine-year career. Sabathia was strong no matter where he pitched, but his offense provided more help on the highway, averaging 6.5 runs in his 21 road starts. The Bombers went 14-7 in the lefty's road outings last season, while the 'over' was a strong play at 15-6. Sabathia saw plenty of success against Boston, winning three of four starts, while the 'under' hit three times.

Josh Beckett will attempt to silence the Yankees' bats, looking to rebound from an awful outing the last time he saw the Champs in August. Beckett allowed five homers and eight earned runs in an 8-4 setback to Sabathia and the Yankees on August 24, 2009. How rare was Beckett's gopher-ball barrage when facing New York? The fireballer yielded just four homers combined in nine previous starts against the Yanks.

Beckett's finish to 2009 was something the former World Series MVP would like to forget. The righty compiled only three quality starts in his final ten outings including a loss in the ALDS to the Angels. Home is where the heart is for Beckett as evidenced by his 10-1 mark last season at Fenway. The Sox won 13 of Beckett's 16 home starts as Boston outscored opponents by three runs a game.

Last season's series was split right down the middle at nine apiece. However, it was a tale of two seasons as the Red Sox captured the first eight meetings. The Yankees stormed back with victories in eight of the next nine matchups, even though seven of those wins came in the Bronx. The two big highlights from New York's series victory at Fenway in August were the home run derby against Beckett and the 20-run outburst against the Sox in the series opener.

The practice of Opening Night in baseball beginning on a Sunday night has been going on for a handful of years with the defending Champs customarily being showcased. There have been mixed results with backing the World Series Champion, as they have gone 2-2 over the last four seasons. The Phillies were tripped up at home against the Braves last season, 4-1, easily finishing 'under' the total of 8 ½.

Despite last season's slip-up at Baltimore on Opening Day, the Yankees are 3-1 the last four series openers. The O's trampled the Yanks in Sabathia's debut, 10-5, as Baltimore cashed as $1.60 home underdogs. The Yanks won at home to start the '07 and '08 seasons, while trouncing the A's in Oakland, 15-2 in 2006.

The Sox will be opening the season at Fenway for the second straight season following a 5-3 victory over the Rays to start '09. Boston began 2008 in Japan with a two-game series against Oakland, splitting the set. The opener did go to the Sox in ten innings, as Boston came out on top, 6-5 as $1.60 favorites.

        Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood:

-- It's great that baseball season is back, but like any sport, remember not to rush into things. The season is extremely long with plenty of betting opportunities for the next six months.

-- With that announcement out of the way, the Monday card has plenty of interesting matchups, including five road favorites. Three former Cy Young winners take the hill in those contests, including Tim Lincecum (at Houston), Chris Carpenter (at Cincinnati), and Roy Halladay (at Washington). The ex-Blue Jay ace makes his Phillies' debut on the road, while being the largest favorite on the board.

-- Favorites went 6-5 on last season's Opening Day, but three underdogs of $1.30 or higher pulled off victories (Mariners, Pirates, and Orioles). Totals were tough to gauge, finishing 5-5-1, as six games plated at least ten runs each.

Opening night adds new twist to rivalry

By HOWARD ULMAN AP Sports Writer

BOSTON(AP) -- The rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox is already intense. Throw in a couple of new twists and the hype soars.

Sunday night's game between the storied franchises is the first of the 2010 season, a prime-time showcase all to themselves while other teams wait until Monday for opening day.

And New York starts off as defending champions for the first time since its 2001 opener.

"It's special," Mark Teixeira said. "You're not going to be able to go into the season as defending World Series champs every single year. So when you get a chance to do that, it makes the start of the season that much more fun."

A handful of Boston's players know what that's like. The Red Sox were hailed as champions after winning the 2007 World Series then had to refocus.

"We spent the whole spring telling everybody to move on, so it was kind of a mixed message," manager Terry Francona said.

It will be hard to glean anything from Sunday night's game, though there's sure to be some hand-wringing by the losing team's rabid fan base. The Red Sox won their opener last year and were swept by the Los Angeles Angels in the AL division series. The Yankees started with a loss and finished with their 27th World Series title.

"Opening Night is special regardless of who you're playing," Francona said. "I'm sure there will be a little extra anticipation. I think we just need to win, regardless of who we play."

Boston's Josh Beckett and New York's CC Sabathia will make their second consecutive opening-day starts in what is expected to be unseasonably warm weather.

Last year's Red Sox opener was rained out, but Beckett sparkled in a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay the next day in Boston, allowing one run and two hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Sabathia's opener? Not quite the same.

He looked nothing like the pitcher the Yankees expected when they signed him before the season to a $161 million, seven-year contract. The left-hander allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings with five walks and two wild pitches in a 10-5 loss at Baltimore. He had no strikeouts for the first time since July 25, 2005, at Oakland.

When the season ended, though, he was 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA.

"CC's personality is perfect," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "He doesn't get fazed by much. He wants to pitch."

The game originally was scheduled for Monday before being switched, giving the spotlight to teams which have won three of the last six World Series - an attractive matchup for television viewers.

"Opening day, there's always a certain amount of anxiety to go along with the excitement," Francona said. "When's the first pitch? 8:09? That's a long day. There's no way I'm going to go to the ballpark later because it's a later (start). It just doesn't work that way. Get there early and do a lot of sitting around."

The Yankees made the big moves in free agency before last season, adding Sabathia, Teixeira and right-hander A.J. Burnett. The Red Sox nabbed the big name before this season by signing John Lackey, the top starter with the Angels but the No. 3 behind Beckett and lefty Jon Lester with Boston.

          How is Beckett looking?

"Good, driven," Francona said. "He's ready to go."

The Yankees let World Series MVP Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon leave as free agents over the winter and traded Melky Cabrera. They picked up center fielder Curtis Granderson, designated hitter Nick Johnson and right-hander Javier Vazquez.

New York also is looking forward to a full year from Alex Rodriguez, who missed the first 28 games last year after hip surgery.

Boston lost left fielder Jason Bay in free agency but upgraded its defense by signing Gold Glovers Mike Cameron to play center and Adrian Beltre for third base. Marco Scutaro takes over at shortstop for Alex Gonzalez.

"I've played the Yankees before," Cameron said. "It's built up more by (the media) than the players. For us, it's always big. Playing here every day is big. I'm not going to try and make it any bigger than it is.

"It's good to see how you match up. They've got a lot of new players. We have a few new players."

The Yankees also take it for what it is, just the first of 162 regular-season games.

"The motivation is simple," Jeter said. "You want to win."

This will be the fourth time in 26 years that the rivals have met in the opener. New York won the last two in 1992 and 2005, both in Yankee Stadium. Boston won at Fenway Park in 1985 and is opening the season at home for just the third time since 1996.

"Going there is always special," said Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, looking forward to his 16th opening day. "It's fun. The fans make it fun. The atmosphere is always great. The reason why it's so great is the excitement when you walk out of that dugout, the buzz. It doesn't get old."

Pettitte is scheduled to face Lackey in Wednesday's finale of the three-game series. Lester goes against Burnett on Tuesday.

Easter Bunny busy with NBA treats

Four teams very familiar with one another are set to face off against each other in NBA action this Easter Sunday. Cleveland has all but wrapped up the league’s best record and wants to continue playing well headed into the playoffs. They will face Boston who is search of finding their way. Immediately following, the surging San Antonio Spurs try to lasso the Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center. Enjoy the Easter ham, enjoy the games.

                    Cleveland at Boston 1:00E ABC

The Atlantic Division champion Boston Celtics (47-28, 30-43-2 ATS) close out a six-game homestand which has been dismal to say the least. Having won nine of 13 games coming off a three game road trip, Boston started an extended stay at home dumping Denver by 14 points and secured a non-cover win over Sacramento by eight as 11-point favorites.

Last Sunday the Celtics were in position to prove they had gotten over three month slide of being incredibly ordinary, facing a hot San Antonio team and they were vanquished 94-73 by the Spurs. That loss must have left an emotional scar or Boston really isn’t anything but average, losing games to Oklahoma City and Houston on their own floor since, which left their coach to say this after Rockets defeat.

"There are so many things I could point out, but I won't," Doc Rivers said. "We played like a high school team at times, as far as the way our thought process was."

The C’s are just 23-15 at home, with a pediculous spread record of 11-26-1 ATS. Chances are this is not their last home loss.

In comes Cleveland with the best record in the NBA at 60-16 (37-37-2 ATS), having won 17 of 19 (10-8-1 ATS) since Feb. 21 and in high gear heading towards the playoffs. The Cavaliers almost traded J.J. Hickson to Phoenix and right now they are thrilled they did not. Coach Mike Brown is defensive-minded and gets wacky when his team doesn’t perform on that end of the floor.

Lately, he has used Hickson as defensive stopper late in games and he has come through, grabbing career-high 16 rebounds on Friday in the Cavaliers win over Atlanta and working a trap with Jamario Moon on Milwaukee’s John Salmons that forced key turnover to help preserve victory earlier in the week. Cleveland is 26-12 and 21-16-1 ATS outside of Ohio.

Sportsbook.com has Cleveland as 1.5-point road favorites with total of 193.5 on this Easter Sunday clash and the Cavs are 12-5 ATS on this day of the week and 6-2 UNDER in last eight games. Boston is proving more and more they can’t compete with the better teams and are 7-18-1 ATS if the opponent has record of .600 or higher. The Celtics are 29-11 OVER off a loss.

The favorite in this matchup is 5-1 ATS and the previous five contests in Boston are 4-1 OVER.

San Antonio at L.A. Lakers 3:30E ABC

Despite trying circumstances, San Antonio (46-29, 39-35-1 ATS) has flourished. Playing without Tony Parker, other players like Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan missing a game here and there and schedule back-loaded with games, the Spurs have managed to win 15 of last 20 (14-6 ATS). San Antonio is in seventh spot in the hostile Western Conference, but is only one loss behind Oklahoma City and two behind Denver and Utah, and can move up possibly if they continue to win.

Off the 112-100 triumph over Orlando, the Spurs are 9-1 ATS after crossing the century mark.

The Lakers (55-21, 32-42-2 ATS) have not played very good basketball, with an 8-6 (5-9 ATS) record since Mar. 4, before facing Utah two days ago. The Jazz bring out the best in Los Angeles, as Kobe Bryant and teammates handed Utah their eighth straight loss at the Staples Center 106-92 as 4.5-point favorites.

L.A. has played almost arrogantly bored of late, more going thru the motions waiting for the playoffs to begin, however playing against other quality teams like Utah in the West brought back the intensity and it will be interesting to see if they play with same passion against the Spurs. The Lakers haven’t covered back to back games since Feb. 6-10, when they did so three consecutive times.

The Lakers are a six-point favorite with total of 194, but are just 3-9 ATS on previous dozen home tilts and are 20-7-1 UNDER off a win by double digits. San Antonio is perfect against the number if their opponent scored 100 or more points in last contest at 8-0 ATS and is 10-4-1 UNDER on Sunday’s.

The Lakers are on 7-1 ATS run against the Greg Popovich’s Spurs and the UNDER is 5-0 in L.A.
