Grizzlies face playoff elimination at Orlando
The math says the Grizzlies are still in the playoff hunt. But it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out the odds are severely stacked against them.
Memphis will try and keep its fleeting hopes alive on Sunday when the Grizzlies take to the road to meet Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Memphis needs to win its remaining seven games while both San Antonio and Oklahoma City close out their seasons on long losing strings.
The Grizzlies could have picked an easier road venue to face a must-win contest. Orlando is 30-7 straight up at Amway Arena this season, 19-16-2 against the spread. The Magic lost just one of its eight March home games. Memphis is 16-20 SU on the road, and a respectable 20-16 ATS away from home.
A recent three-game losing skid hurt Memphis' chances significantly. The Grizzlies stopped the streak on Friday at home with a 107-96 win over the Hornets. Memphis carried 3 ½-point chalk into the contest. O.J. Mayo's 27 points led the boxscore for both teams, with the Grizzlies crushing New Orleans on the boards by a 56-41 margin.
Marc Gasol missed Friday's win after reinjuring his neck in Wednesday's loss to the Mavericks. Gasol is second on the team in rebounding with a 9.3 per game average, and will miss the rest of the season.
While the Grizzlies were stopping a three-game losing streak Friday, Orlando watched its three-game winning streak come to an end in a 112-100 loss at San Antonio. Three-point underdogs in the affair, the Magic watched a 56-54 halftime lead disappear in the third quarter when the Spurs held a 33-22 advantage.
Six Orlando players scored in double figures, but it wasn't nearly enough to counter Manu Ginobili's season-high 43 for San Antonio. The Spurs guard was 14-of-17 from the free throw line where San Antonio outscored Orlando, 20-12.
Memphis may not be in the best gym to try and keep its postseason dreams alive, but the Grizzlies are facing a team they have had good fortune against in recent battles. Lionel Hollins' crew has won the last three meetings with the Magic, SU and ATS, and seven of the last 10 while going 8-2 ATS. One of those wins came earlier this season when Orlando traveled to FedEx Forum on Jan. 25.
The Grizzlies won the game 99-94 thanks to holding the Magic to 15 points in the final quarter. Memphis opened as a one-point favorite before the spread closed with Orlando the two-point road favorite. Zach Randolph paced the Grizzlies with 23 points and 19 rebounds while O.J. Mayo chipped in 20.
The final score stayed well below the 205-point 'total,' sending 'under' backers to the pay window for the fourth straight time in the series. The 'under' is now 7-1 the last eight meetings.
Orlando's home games have stayed 'under' by a 20-16-1 clip while Memphis is 23-12-1 to the 'over' on the road.
Sunday's tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. (PT) and begins a three-game homestand for the Magic with the Wizards and Knicks trailing the Grizzlies into Orlando. Memphis will head home after the game to host the Rockets on Tuesday before hitting the road for games at Dallas and San Antonio.
