    Daily Sports Roundup: March 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Stars play host to the Sharks, while the Lakers battle the Hawks, and the Jazz look for a home victory over the Warriors.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are 13 games on the busy NBA slate for Wednesday, including the Lakers at Atlanta. Los Angeles (54-20 SU, 31-41-2 ATS) fell 108-100 in New Orleans in their last game on Monday night despite Kobe Bryant's 31-point performance. Pau Gasol had 26 points and 22 boards in that contest. The Hawks (47-26 SU, 43-30 ATS) are coming off a 94-84 home win over Indiana on Sunday, with Josh Smith picking up 21 points and 13 rebounds. The Lakers and Hawks met in Los Angeles back on November 1, with the home team winning 118-110 as an 8.5-point favorite. Bryant led all scorers with 41 points in that victory for Los Angeles.

Also on the NBA schedule for Wednesday: the Clippers at Toronto, Philadelphia at Charlotte, Milwaukee at Cleveland, Miami at Detroit, Oklahoma City at Boston, Phoenix at New Jersey, Sacramento at Minnesota, Washington at New Orleans, Dallas at Memphis, Houston at San Antonio, New York at Portland, and Golden State at Utah. The Jazz (49-26 SU, 46-26-3 ATS) have won two straight games, getting past New York 103-98 at home in their most recent outing on Monday night. Utah beat the Warriors (21-52 SU, 42-30-1 ATS) by a score of 100-89 at Golden State as 5-point road favorites when the teams met back on February 19.

As well, there is one college basketball game on the schedule for Wednesday, as Saint Louis hosts Virginia Commonwealth in the second game of the CBI championship series. The Rams won the series opener 68-56 at home on Monday night, and they can clinch the tourney title with a road victory at Chaifetz Arena. Joey Rodriguez scored 22 points for Virginia Commonwealth on Monday night, while Willie Reed tossed in a team-high 11 points in the loss for Saint Louis.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Florida at Buffalo, Carolina at Montreal, Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh, Chicago at Minnesota, Anaheim at Colorado, Phoenix at Calgary, and San Jose at Dallas. The 47-19-10 Sharks won their fourth straight game last time out despite missing star forward Joe Thornton; they beat Colorado 4-3 on Sunday. Thornton is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. The 33-29-14 Stars were beaten 3-1 in Anaheim in their last game on Monday. Dallas played that contest without forward Mike Ribeiro, who was scratched because he had missed a scheduled team meeting.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Oklahoma City Thunder at Boston Celtics – Paul Pierce (shoulder) suffered a stinger in practice Tuesday and is questionable (see injury note below).

Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons – Jermaine O’Neal (knee) missed the team’s last game and is questionable. Rodney Stuckey and Richard Hamilton both injured their ankles on Sunday and are questionable.

Houston Rockets at San Antonio Spurs – Manu Ginobili (back) missed Monday’s game and is probable. Roger Mason left Monday’s game with a broken pinkie and is questionable.

Golden State Warriors at Utah Jazz – Monta Ellis (illness) missed the team’s last game with the flu and is doubtful. Andrei Kirilenko (calf) did not play on Monday and is doubtful.

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars – Joe Thornton (lower body) missed Sunday’s game and is doubtful. Mike Ribeiro (disciplinary) was benched on Sunday after missing a team meeting and is questionable.

Anaheim Ducks at Colorado Avalanche – Ryan Getzlaf (ankle) has missed the last two games and is doubtful. Jonas Hiller (back) is expected to miss Wednesday’s game.

      Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames

Line to keep an eye on

The Blazers-Knicks total opened at 200.5 and can be found anywhere from that number to 201.5 now. Portland has played to the under in four of its last five games.

      Who’s hot

Virginia Commonwealth has played to the over in five of its last six games.

The Sabres are 6-1 in their last seven games.

The Raptors are 5-1 ATS in their last six games.

      Who’s not

The Canadiens have dropped four of their last five games.

St. Louis is 3-3 ATS in its last six games.

The Cavs are 2-4 ATS in their last six outings.

      Key stat

660 – Number of tickets allotted to the Butler student body for the Final Four game on Saturday in Indianapolis.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Pierce could miss Boston’s game on Wednesday versus the Thunder after suffering a shoulder stinger in practice on Tuesday. Pierce (18.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg) has missed 10 games this season, mostly because of the shoulder injury, and the Celtics went 2-8 ATS without him. Marquis Daniels would likely start against Oklahoma City if Pierce can’t go.

      Game of the Day

      UFC Fight Night 21 picks

      Notable quotable

"In my mind, we'll be making the eighth spot. We'll be playing LeBron [James] – playing Cleveland. We can't walk around acting like we're not going to make [the playoffs], because that's when things turn on you. Our biggest goal is to make the playoffs, and we're going to make it."

-- Bulls point guard Derrick Rose said of his prediction of making the postseason. Chicago trails Toronto by one game for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

      Tips and notes

      - Despite grabbing a must-win game against Charlotte on Monday, there are serious chemistry problems in Toronto. After getting blown out by Utah at home last Wednesday, Chris Bosh said the team “didn’t come to play” and it doesn’t “have that fire right now.” On top of that, Hedo Turkoglu said he had the flu on Sunday and couldn’t play but was seen partying that very night. He got benched the next game. The Raptors are 6-14 ATS since the All-Star break.

      - Warriors coach Don Nelson is three wins shy of becoming the NBA’s all-time winningest coach. Nelson has said that he doesn’t care about the record (yea right), but his players are well aware of it and are aiming to win a few for the gipper with nine games remaining. Corey Maggette said, “our guys are very conscious of [the record]” and “we can hopefully get the record for him.”

      - Once a safe haven, the Celtics have not played well at the Garden this season. Boston is 23-13 SU at home this season and 11-24-1 ATS. Coach Doc Rivers admitted his team’s shortcomings saying, “We haven't had a lot of rhythm at home.” The Celtics will face Oklahoma City, Houston and Cleveland in their next three games beginning Wednesday – all at home.

        Wednesday six-pack

-- Employment advice: If you're a coach at Boston College, don't go on interviews to other schools. It'll cost you your current job.

-- The real question is: Did the powers-that-be do the right thing when they moved BC from the Big East to the ACC? Probably not.

-- I'll miss Steve Lavin on ESPN. Hope he does well with St John's.

-- There is a race car driver named Will Power. Hopefully someday he will get to meet Eldrick Woods, who could've used some will power.

-- I've yet to hear a good reason why teams bat their pitcher eighth.

-- One reason the McNabb-to-Oakland rumor has gained traction is that McNabb and Raiders' OC Hue Jackson are distant cousins.

Wednesday's List of 13: Ranking the top 13 fantasy third basemen

        13) Ian Stewart-- Eligible at 2B/3B; with 25 HR, 70 RBI, he's elite at 2B; also played nine games in OF, could become eligible there, too. Playing at Coors Field ain't never bad for a hitter.

        12) Gordon Beckham-- 14 HR, 63 RBI in 378 AB; with Getz gone to KC,its his job now. Finished strong LY, with six homers in September.

        11) Chipper Jones-- Hit .236 after All-Star break LY; you wonder if he and Bobby Cox will ride off into the sunset at same time after season.

        10) Chone Figgins-- Got paid in Seattle, but won't bad leadoff there; has 117 stolen bases last three years. Is 32 already; scored 114 runs LY.

        9) Aramis Ramirez-- Shoulder a conern; missed half of last season. Fairly consistent producer when he plays, but he's 31 now. Buyer beware.

        8) Michael Young-- HRs were up LY, RBIs down; moved to 3B for Elvis Andrus, hit .322 with best OB% in last three years. Good team guy.

        7) Pablo Sandoval-- No long eligible at catcher, but is at 3B/1B- had huge year in '09, with 25 HRs, 90 RBI. BA was 60 points higher at home than on road, which is weird, since Pac Bell is a pitchers' park.

        6) Mark Reynolds-- Struck out 427 times last two years, but hit 44 HRs with 102 RBI LY; also had 24 steals. Not sure he can keep that level of power hitting up, considering how often he doesn't make contact.

        5) Ryan Zimmerman-- 33 HR, 106 RBI, .364 OB% at age 24. We'll see if Nationals get better and he gets some of the attention he deserves.

        4) Kevin Youkilis-- Hasn't played in 150 games in season yet; could wind up back at 3rd if Red Sox trade for Adrian Gonzalez. .413 OB% LY.

        3) Davd Wright-- Power numbers took tumble LY, only had five homers on road (can't blame Citi Field for that). Needs Reyes/Beltran healthy so he has runners on base when he comes to bat.

        2) Evan Longoria-- 60 HR, 198 RBI in 1,032 career AB; OB% went up by 21 points LY, slugging %age was slightly down. An elite player.

        1) Alex Rodriguez-- Not sure how his hip is; he's 34 now and figures to start slowing down some, but he's playing in a bandbox with great lineup so he should put up huge numbers again this season.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at New Jersey Nets (+7.5, 212.5)

The Nets avoided the dubious distinction of holding the NBA's all-time worst record after recording their 10th win of the season on Monday night versus the Spurs.

"It's a big relief. It's a big relief," Courtney Lee said. "Now we can go out and ball and have fun and play."

The pressure not to be the next '72-'73 Sixers (9-73) was certainly mounting and NBA TV commentators said Monday's affair had a playoff-like atmosphere.

"Despite their record, they have a lot of guys who are very good," said Tim Duncan after the game.

Since the "brown bag special" incident last Monday where New Jersey CEO Brett Yormark confronted a fan wearing a bag over his head, the Nets have gone 2-1 SU and ATS.

Look for New Jersey to be budding with confidence as the Suns visit Wednesday.

            Pick: Nets

Golden State Warriors at Utah Jazz

An MRI on Sunday confirmed that Utah swingman Andrei Kirilenko has a strained calf. AK47 has been on and off the injury list all season, and just about every other member of the Jazz has been set back by an ailment at least once this year.

"Every time you look around, somebody else is hurt," coach Jerry Sloan said. "We've cut our practices back to almost nothing, hoping not to tax guys too much.”

After battling through injuries for 17 March games, Utah won’t get much of a break in April having to hit the road for four of its last six games.

“It's tough, especially when we've got a lot of guys banged up, myself included,” Deron Williams said. “You need the rest. It just seems like we haven't had a chance to just recover.”

Tired teams usually translate to a tired defensive effort and that doesn’t bode well against a high-scoring Warriors team that will push the ball until the end.

            Pick: Warriors

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars

San Jose found its swagger with a four-game winning streak after losing six straight games earlier in the month.

The Sharks benefited from a three-game home stand during this streak in which they outscored opponents 11-5. They are the third-ranked offense in the NHL and average 3.4 goals per game inside HP Pavilion.

However, on the road, San Jose scores just 2.9 goals per game and now heads out on a four-game road swing starting in Dallas Wednesday night. Adding to that is a lower-body injury to center Joe Thornton that currently has the All-Star listed as doubtful against the Stars.

"I came to the rink wanting to play, but I couldn't," Thornton told the Mercury News Monday. "But there was just no way I could pull it off."

The Sharks suffered a beating the last time they visited the Lone Star State. Dallas defeated San Jose 8-2, despite being outshot 47-31 back on March 16. The Stars are back home after a four-game trip, posting a 20-10-1-6 record inside the American Airlines Center.

                      Pick: Dallas

                      Anaheim Ducks at Colorado Avalanche

No one wants to be the one to tell the Ducks the dream is over.

Anaheim has fought furiously this month to sneak into the postseason, winning back-to-back games and six of its last eight games to pull within nine points of the eighth-placed Avalanche.

With just seven games left on the schedule, it seems the inevitable is on everyone’s lips – including Jim Alexander, of The Press-Enterprise. The NHL columnist believes it is time for the Anaheim front office to implode the current roster and begin the re-building process.

“And while separation from old favorites can be painful, the demands of that future may mean it's time to allow Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne to exit gracefully,” Alexander writes.

Those players won’t be going out without a fight. The Ducks have won eight of their past 10 meetings with the Avs and most recently handed them a 5-2 thrashing last weekend.

                      Pick: Anaheim

Pucking the trends: Who has the easiest home stretch?
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Goaltending controversy Bruin’

Tuukka Rask has taken over Boston’s starting goaltender position from 2009 Vezina Winner Tim Thomas.

Rask leads the NHL in goals against average (2.08) and trails only Ryan Miller for the top save percentage in the NHL.

“We’ve been looking at the way he’s played, and technically, he’s been pretty sound,” coach Claude Julien told the Boston Globe.

Despite Rask’s league-leading goals against average, Boston has a 13-14-6 over/under record in games started by the 22-year-old former Maple Leaf. When Tim Thomas is in net, the Bruins’ over/under record is 13-26-3.

                        Going streaking

Both the San Jose Sharks and Ottawa Senators have followed up losing streaks with winning streaks.

The Sharks lost six in a row (0-5-1) before winning their last four games. San Jose has scored at least three goals in those four games. The Sharks only managed to score three goals once during their losing streak.

The Senators lost five games in a row (0-5-0) before winning their last four. Goaltender Brian Elliot has allowed four goals in four games and has two shutouts during the win streak.

"When you're riding a streak, you just have to keep that winning feeling and confidence going," Elliot told reporters.

As Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen points out, Elliot has been named an NHL star of the week three times this season, twice earning the first star.

                        Winging it

Out of the playoff picture for most of the season, the Detroit Red Wings are now in sixth place, six points up on the Calgary Flames.

Other than a season-ending shoulder injury suffered by Kirk Maltby and a recent groin injury to Dan Cleary, the Red Wings are finally healthy. Only Nicklas Lidstrom, Todd Bertuzzi, and Brad Stuart have played all 75 games for Detroit.

Chris McCosky of the Detroit News observes that goaltender Jimmy Howard will make his 23rd consecutive start, tying him with Roy Edwards for most consecutive starts by a Detroit rookie.

Howard was named the NHL’s second star for last week, going 4-0-0 with a .957 save percentage.

Detroit has a 39-23-13 record and is available at +1200 to win the Stanley Cup at 5Dimes.

                        Playoff race update

                        East

Five teams are fighting for three playoff spots. The Flyers and Canadiens have 82 points, and Boston is in eighth with 80 points, Atlanta trails Boston by two and the Rangers are four points out of the playoffs.

Of those five teams, Montreal has the easiest schedule, with only two games remaining against teams currently in the playoff picture. Atlanta has the most difficult schedule, with two games remaining against each of Washington and Pittsburgh.

                        West

The West is (barely) a nine-team race. Calgary trails sixth-place Detroit by six points, seventh-place Los Angeles by five points and eighth-place Colorado by four points.

Calgary, Los Angeles and Colorado all have difficult remaining schedules, but Calgary’s is the most difficult. The Flames still have games remaining against each of the top teams in the Western Conference (San Jose, Chicago, Phoenix, Vancouver).

                        On the Schedule

Wed. March 31 – Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames

Phoenix will play former Smythe Division rivals on back-to-back nights. After a game against the Canucks Wednesday, Phoenix must play a desperate and well-rested Calgary Flames team.

Thu, April 1 – Carolina Hurricanes at Ottawa Senators

With three road games in four nights and the last to be played against a rejuvenated Ottawa Senators squad, the Canes could find themselves officially eliminated from the playoff race this week.

Fri. April 3 – Chicago Blackhawks at New Jersey Devils

Chicago hasn’t played well over the last two weeks and will be in tough playing its third game in four nights against a Devils team that is 25-10-2 at home.
