Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals (-210, 6)
Even though the Ottawa Senators have been hot and cold all season, they remain firmly in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. But Ottawa doesn’t seem worried about its lack of consistency, its only focus is finishing the year on a good note.
“We want to go into the playoffs on a high, playing well, playing like we feel we have in the past few games”, Senators center Mike Fisher told The Ottawa Citizen. “That’s kind of our focus. The rest will take care of itself, as far as seeding and all that other stuff.”
And the Senators have been doing just that, winning their last four contests following a five-game losing streak. The team is also gaining confidence with every victory and feels like it can match up against any team in the playoffs.
The Senators’ budding confidence will be put to the test Tuesday night when they travel to Washington to face the league-leading Capitals. Having already clinched the Eastern Conference title, the Capitals don’t really have much to play for. But they certainly didn’t appreciate getting outplayed by the Calgary Flames Sunday night in a 5-3 loss.
Expect the Capitals to assert themselves early against the red-hot Senators.
Pick: Capitals
Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils (-170, 5)
The Boston Bruins don’t have a chance of catching the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference standings, but these two teams are in a tight race for best defense in the league. The Bruins have allowed a total of 177 goals while the Devils have given up 174.
The Bruins have earned shutouts in two of their last three games and could realistically catch the Devils in hopes of boasting the best defense in the NHL for the second year in a row.
“New Jersey has a pretty good lead on us,” goalie Tim Thomas told The Boston Herald. “With the number of games left, to be realistic, it isn’t something you should focus on. At this point, it’s about the W’s, whether it’s 5-0 or 5-3.”
Goals should be hard to come by in this defensive battle. The under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings between these two teams.
Pick: Under
