    NIT Semi-Finals Wagering Preview

College basketball’s craziness continues in New York in the National Invitational Tournament. While the NCAA tourney only saw one of its top seeds advance to its Final Four, none of the four teams that were seeded at the top of their bracket moved on to Madison Square Garden, the last three all losing at home in prior round. This sets up a wide open finish for the NIT.

    (2) Mississippi vs (3) Dayton 7:00E ESPN2

The Dayton Flyers (23-12, 16-15 ATS) came stumbling down the stretch with 3-6 SU record (1-7-1 ATS), being eliminated in A-10 Tournament by eventual champion Xavier. The Flyers were picked to be conference champions, but limped to 8-8 record in a league that was much tougher than expected. For whatever reason, Dayton took flight and has won and covered three games in a row by a margin of 14 points per game.

The Flyers are still playing great defense (holding three teams to 37.3 percent or less shooting), but it has been the offense that has brighten up, shooting over 48 percent in this tournament compared to 44.6 percent on the season. Dayton is 8-1 ATS after playing consecutive road games over the last three seasons.

Mississippi (24-10, 18-11 ATS) saw Arizona State fall in their very first contest in the NIT, which opened the door to three encounters at home for the Rebels. They took advantage of the situation and are running away from the competition. Ole Miss has average 88 points per game, trying to force opponents to keep up, which they have not been able to do. Terrico White and Chris Warren are living up to reputation as a guard tandem. With defense not the primary concern, the Rebels are 12-3 ATS after allowing 75 points or more in back to back contests.

Bookmaker.com had open Ole Miss as a favorite, but the line has fallen to a Pick and the total of 142 seems about right if these teams were playing 35 minutes instead of 40. This should be true up and down affair, with plenty of dunks and speed from both clubs and Dayton is 19-10 ATS versus good shooting teams making 45 percent or more of their shots. Mississippi is 11-3 ATS away from Oxford off a home win scoring 85 or more points.

    (4) North Carolina vs. (2) Rhode Island 9:20E ESPN2

Both of these teams come in the second semi-final really feeling good about their prospects after winning on enemy floors in really challenging environments, where not many opposing teams escape victorious. The Tar Heels (19-16, 12-20 ATS) went into a real hornets’ nest at Alabama-Birmingham and made enough offense plays while playing great defense (UAB shot 28.8 percent) to come away with the win 60-55 as 4.5-point underdogs. Much maligned point guard Larry Drew provided steady ball-handling and leadership. While coach Roy Williams would like to believe his guard is finally figuring out what he has been preaching all year, Drew offers this reason for improved judgment and play.

I just don't want to lose," he told the Raleigh New & Observer. "I just don't want to go home. I just don't want to stop playing. I've done my share of my things wrong this season, and I've made my share of mistakes. And I just want to turn things around for myself, and the team." North Carolina is sensational 7-0 AT in road post-season tournament games the last two seasons.

Rhode Island (26-9, 12-17 ATS) is at its best when it has a three-pronged scoring attack of Delroy James, Lamonte Ulmer and Keith Cothran are making outside shots, which has been the case in the NIT. The Rams overcame a big deficit at Virginia Tech and won going away 79-72. Rhode Island is 26-15 ATS in road games after one or more Over’s.

Similar to North Carolina, this tournament has been therapeutic for Rhode Island, who started 19-3 and looked like a sure-fire NCAA team in early February. The Rams are a one-point favorite with total of 149, but are 2-9 ATS after a game where they covered the spread this year. The Tar Heels are in the same boat against the spread with crummy 4-13 ATS record after one or more Under’s this season.

Common opponents might be a telling factor in the nightcap with UNC 2-2 & 1-3 ATS (+3.5 point margin) and URI 3-0 & 2-1 ATS, winning by 6.6 PPG.

      NCAA Tournament Betting Summary

Just when it seemed impossible for this year’s tournament to get any better we were given the instant classic between Kansas State and Xavier in double overtime, along with Tennessee in two titanic struggles, both coming down to the last shot in the last two rounds. As we move ahead, here is a wagering overview of the tournament to date.

Once the Sweet 16 arrives, Cinderella’s usually finds the clock striking midnight and indeed it did for St. Mary’s, Northern Iowa, Cornell and Washington, losing by an average of 15 points per game. High seeds were not completely immune from being struck down as Syracuse and Ohio State were both laid to rest. Still, favorites and higher seeds were 6-2 and 5-2-1 ATS.

In this round, if a team was favored by 7.5 or more points or four or less, they were 3-0 against the number. Totals were also decidedly one way in the Thursday-Friday matchups with the UNDER an overwhelming 7-1.

The Elite Eight brought far different results. Here the favorites were 1-3 SU and ATS. In Kentucky’s case, No.1 seeds are now .500 SU against No. 2 seeds in the last 36 meetings in this round, thus underdog players made out well. Nonetheless, coach John Calipari has to be shaking his head thinking his team did not allow a two-point basket in the first 20 minutes against West Virginia and still trailed.

The higher seeds were 2-2 SU and ATS over the weekend, with the total doing a reversal at 3-1 OVER.

With just three games left to be played in this year’s heart-throbbing NCAA tourney, here are the all the betting numbers.

      Favorites - 38-23 SU, 29-31-1 ATS
      Higher seeds - 41-19, 30-29-1 ATS
Favorites of 7.5 or more -16-1, 9-8 ATS
Favorites of 4 or less -10-17, 9-18 ATS
      Totals – 35-26 UNDER
      Totals over 140 – 16-12 UNDER
      Totals under 130 – 9-6 UNDER

Looking ahead, all four coaches are perfectly suited for this tournament, with 20 of the games decided by five points or less. That means it comes done to execution and the will to win and performing under pressure. Coaches Tom Izzo, Bob Huggins and Mike Krzyzewski are known for their hard-driving styles that demands excellence and don’t sell Brad Stevens short, as he is known for designing the “Butler way” of playing basketball.

Here is wagering tip. If either Final Four encounters goes into overtime, bet against the winner in the title game. In the last three tournaments, the overtime winner is head-shaking 0-10 SU and 1-9 ATS in next outing (Western Kentucky and San Diego are discounted from 2008, since they played each other after overtime games), including 0-5 SU and ATS this season.

        NIT Semifinals

Bettors have just three NCAA Tournament games remaining, but there’s still action to be had Tuesday in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Let’s take an in-depth look at both contests before discussing a few other topics in Bonus Nuggets.

        **Dayton vs. Ole Miss**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Ole Miss (24-10 straight up, 18-11-1 against the spread) as a one-point favorite with a total of 142. As of Monday night, most books had the game as a pick ‘em with the total in the 141-142 range.

--Dayton (23-12 SU, 16-15-1 ATS) had been to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments before just missing out on making the field this season. To make amends, the Flyers have won three in a row in the NIT, including a 77-71 win at Illinois in the tournament’s quarterfinals. They won outright as three-point underdogs behind Chris Johnson’s 18 points and seven rebounds.

--Ole Miss has won seven of its last eight games while going 6-2 ATS. The Rebels earned a trip to the Big Apple by beating Texas Tech 90-87 in double overtime. However, they failed to cover the number as nine-point home favorites. Chris Warren scored a team-high 18 points for the winners, while Terrico White and Murphy Holloway chipped in 17 points apiece. Holloway also pulled down 11 rebounds and had five steals.

--Before knocking off the Red Raiders, Ole Miss beat Memphis 90-81 as a four-point home favorite in the second round of the NIT. White led five double-figure scorers with 21 points, while Warren had 16 points and seven assists. In the first round of the NIT, the Rebels beat up on Troy 84-65 as 13-point favorites. White exploded for 27 points and seven rebounds against the Trojans.

--Brian Gregory’s squad has taken the cash in all three of its NIT victories. Prior to dropping the Illini, Dayton opened the tournament by destroying Illinois St. 63-42 as a 7 ½-point favorite. Next, the Flyers went on the road and dominated in-state rival Cincinnati, 81-66, as three-point underdogs.

--Chris Wright leads the Flyers in scoring (13.8 points per game), rebounding (7.1 RPG, field-goal percentage (51.3%) and steals (1.4 SPG).

--Ole Miss head coach has this to say about the Flyers (per RebelSports.net): "We're going to have to play for 40 minutes. They'll play in-your-face basketball. They play attack basketball. They are incredibly fast in transition."

--These schools haven’t met since 1980 when Dayton knocked off the Rebels by a 72-70 count.

--The ‘under’ is 16-14 overall for Dayton, but the Flyers have seen the ‘over’ hit at a 5-1 clip in their last six games.

--The ‘over’ is 15-13-2 overall for Ole Miss.

--Tip-off at MSG is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

        **North Carolina vs. Rhode Island**

--LVSC opened this game as a pick ‘em with a total of 150. As of Monday night, most spots had Rhode Island (26-9 SU, 14-17-1 ATS) as a one-point ‘chalk’ with the total in the 150-151 range.

--North Carolina (19-16 SU, 12-21 ATS) has salvaged an otherwise forgettable campaign by winning three consecutive games in the NIT. The Tar Heels have played three nail-biters, prevailing at home against William & Mary before going on the road to win at Mississippi St. and at UAB. The Tar Heels beat the Blazers 60-55 as 4 ½-point underdogs. Deon Thompson paced UNC with 14 points and 12 boards.

--Rhode Island captured a 79-72 win at Va. Tech as a 6 ½-point underdog in the NIT quarterfinals. Delroy James was the catalyst for the Rams, producing 18 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. Lamonte Ulmer and Akeem Richmond added 13 points apiece.

--URI’s NIT run began with a 76-64 triumph over Northwestern as a six-point home favorite. Next, the Rams edged Nevada 85-83, but the Wolf Pack took the money catching 8 ½ points. James scored a game-high 34 points in the win over Nevada.

--Roy Williams’ team won its NIT opener by sending the Tribe home 80-72 as a nine-point home favorite. The Tar Heels went to The Hump in Starkville next, besting the Bulldogs 76-74 thanks to Larry Drew II’s game winner just before the horn went off. UNC beat MSU as a 7 ½-point underdog.

--The ‘under’ is 20-10 overall for UNC, 19-7 in its last 26 outings.

--The ‘under’ is 17-13-1 overall for the Rams.

--ESPN2 will have the telecast approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Ole Miss-Dayton.

        **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--It really is a tired refrain: Duke got all the calls. But here we are, once again, shaking our heads in disgust at how the Blue Devils got the favorable whistles in yet another crucial NCAA Tournament game. Before I go any further, let me clearly state that I think this tournament has had excellent officiating for the most part. Other than New Mexico St. having a beef with the refs in its narrow loss to Michigan St. in the first round, there’s been little drama involving the zebras. Until Sunday’s South Region final in Houston, that is. That’s where Duke center Brian Zoubek should’ve fouled out with his team trailing by four points. Instead, he ‘took a charge’ and later got an offensive rebound and assist that led to a clutch 3-pointer, as the Blue Devils advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 2004. They, with a little help from their friends in stripes, beat Baylor 78-71 as five-point favorites. With 1:19 left, a technical that should’ve gone both ways went only against the Bears. The result was two free throws, the same amount of points that were needed to beat Baylor backers.

--The assumption is that UNC sophomore center Ed Davis, who is out for the season with a broken wrist, is returning to Chapel Hill for his junior year. Davis is listed as the fifth pick in the 2011 Mock Draft at NBADraft.net. The same website has future UNC teammate Harrison Barnes, who will join the Tar Heels as a freshman next season, as the No. 1 overall selection in 2011. Rebels’ sophomore guard Terrico White is listed as the 14th pick in the same draft.

--Oregon should be focusing on trying to get Brad Stevens away from Butler instead of Tom Izzo from Michigan St.

--Donnie Jones has been hired away from Marshall to replace Kirk Speraw at Central Florida. Jones, a long-time assistant to Billy Donovan at Florida, was the head coach of the Thundering Herd for three seasons, going 55-41 overall. Jones took Marshall to the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament this year and his team finished with a 24-10 ledger.

--In Game 1 of a best-of-three series Monday night, Virginia Commonwealth beat Saint Louis 68-56 as a nine-point home favorite. Game 2 will be played Wednesday in St. Louis. Game 3, if necessary, would also be in St. Louis on Friday.

              CollegeInsider.com title tilt tonight

Pacific and Missouri State will compete for the first time ever on the college hardwood in Springfield, MO for the championship of the CIT. Both teams have engineered three wins to make to the title game; however Pacific’s road has been a far more difficult journey.

The Tigers (23-11, 17-16 ATS) bring a chip on their shoulder into their final contest of the season, believing somebody did not want them to reach this far. Pacific has been forced to play three road contests in this tourney and they have conquered all three opponents as an underdog or Pick.

The Tigers traveled almost 5,000 miles over six days, going more than 4,400 miles by plane and nearly 500 miles by bus, according to The Stockton Record. “It's a mentally tiring experience," Pacific coach Bob Thomason told the paper. "I've never had a more difficult time traveling than this one in my 22 years here. Our kids have handled this very well, and I'm really proud of them."

Forward Sam Willard has enjoyed a very good season for Pacific and posted 22 points and 10 rebounds in 64-56 semi-final win over Appalachian State as five point road dogs. The Tigers are solid defensively, allowing 60.4 points per game on 40.3 percent shooting, though they don’t force a large volume of turnovers. They are 8-2 ATS after two straight games forcing opponent to commit 11 or less turnovers this season.

Missouri State (23-12, 15-19-1 ATS) conversely has made the short jaunt to JQH Arena three times in the tournament and will attempt to wrap up the title on their home floor yet again. The Bears arguably had more difficult opponents to face in Louisiana Tech and Creighton, but playing at home helped eliminate that that potential problem. Missouri State can tie Kansas with the most home wins this season at 19 (currently 18-2 and 9-10-1 ATS) and has three players that score in double digits led by Kyle Weems.

Adam Leonard is right behind Weems in scoring for the Bears and offered these thoughts about the CIT.

“We didn't know much about this tournament at the start," Leonard told the News-Leader. "But for us to come out and get to 23 wins and, hopefully 24, it's a big step. A championship would mean something to this program and to this team." Missouri State is 12-4 and 9-7 ATS with three or more days between games.

Bookmaker.com has established the Bears as six-point home favorites with total of 126.5. Neither team instills betting confidence reviewing trends. Missouri State is 1-9 ATS in all tournament games over the last two seasons and Pacific is 3-15 ATS in road games off an upset win as an underdog.

Maybe the total is the better way to wager in this matchup with the squad from Springfield 8-1 OVER after allowing 65 points or less in consecutive games.

This championship contest is on FOX College Sports at 8:00 Eastern.

                Sixers go for rare triple

With the playoffs out of the picture, the Philadelphia 76ers are looking for something to salvage a disappointing season. A third straight victory over a playoff contender could help. The 76ers look to win three in a row for the first time in almost two months while trying to avoid a third straight loss to the playoff-bound Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

After consecutive playoff appearances, Philadelphia (26-47, 31-42 ATS) will miss the postseason with its fourth losing record in five seasons. However, the 76ers have played better of late, beating playoff contenders Milwaukee and Atlanta after losing 16 of 20. “We found a way to close a couple of games out in a row,” said forward Elton Brand, who had 14 points in a 105-98 win over the Hawks on Friday. “We’ve struggled all year doing that. It’s satisfying to do it twice in a row.”

Philadelphia hasn’t won three straight since a season-high five-game winning streak from Jan. 31-Feb. 9. Achieving that feat won’t be easy with the Thunder in town, further complicated by the fact the Sixers are 3-12 ATS having won two of their last three games this season.

Oklahoma City (44-28, 42-30 ATS) needs four wins in its last 10 games to secure the franchise’s first playoff appearance since 2004-05, while in Seattle. The Thunder, who’ll play six of the 10 on the road, will likely spend the regular season’s final two weeks jockeying for position in the competitive Western Conference. “We’ve just got to take these 10 games and give it our all,” Thunder forward Jeff Green said. “We’re fighting for position, fighting in the playoff race.” Oklahoma City is 20-15 and 22-13 ATS on the road this year.

Though the Thunder won 117-106 at home over the 76ers on Dec. 2, the franchise has dropped four in a row at Philadelphia (0-3-1 ATS), including a 110-85 defeat in its last visit Nov. 15, 2008.

The 76ers held Kevin Durant to 27 total points in his previous two trips to Philadelphia, but the Oklahoma City star had 33 in the December matchup. Durant finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds in the Thunder’s 92-87 home loss to Portland on Sunday. Second in the NBA with 29.6 points per game, Durant took only three shots in the fourth quarter and missed them all as Oklahoma City suffered its fourth loss in seven games.

“He’s an unbelievable scorer,” Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. “I think that the big thing is to try to make him work to catch, deny him his touches as much as possible and then try and stay in front of him.”

Despite published rumors that the team had given up knowing coach Edidie Jordan is expected to be released after the season and losing 13 of 15 (4-11 ATS), the 76ers will hope to continue their recent offensive surge. Putting up 97.1 points per game this season, Philadelphia is averaging 103.0 and shooting 51.3 percent in its last two contests.

Andre Iguodala had 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists against Atlanta, and rookie point guard Jrue Holiday posted his second career double-double with 13 and 12 assists while also recording seven steals.

The 17th overall pick in 2009, Holiday is averaging 7.7 points and 3.4 assists on the season, but 14.2 points with 6.0 assists while shooting 49.6 percent in his last 12 games. “I have a lot of confidence,” said Holiday, who had 15 points in his first game against the Thunder. “I’m feeling comfortable.”

Bookmaker.com has Philly as 5.5-point home underdogs with total of 195. The 76ers are one of the worst home teams in the league in a couple of aspects. They are tied for 27th in overall record at 12-24 with Washington and only Dallas is worse against the spread with Philadelphia 11-25 ATS. If would seem the odds are stacked against them with 5-15 ATS mark after scoring 105 points and they are 14-4 UNDER at home after covering the spread in two or more games.

The Thunder suffered a disappointing loss to Portland at home Sunday, falling 92-87 as 3.5-point favorites leaving them in sixth position in the West, yet ahead of the Trailblazers and San Antonio by one game in the loss column. OKC is titillating 21-6 ATS after one or more losses and 15-5 OVER on the road when playing eight or more games in two week period.

This contest can be viewed in local markets at 7:05 Eastern, with the Sixers 5-14 ATS revenging a loss of 10 points or more this season.

                  Skinner out at Boston College

Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Boston College and men's basketball coach Al Skinner have parted ways after 13 seasons.

Skinner met with school officials last Wednesday and the decision was made at that time, but athletic director Gene DeFilippo agreed to keep the information quiet while the coach explored other possibilities.

"In our meeting, we discussed our philosophical differences and our concern for the future of our basketball program," DeFilippo said in a statement Tuesday. "Coach Skinner then asked if we could delay the announcement so that he could pursue other opportunities. Out of respect for coach Skinner, Boston College agreed. Other institutions were made aware we would be parting ways from the beginning of the process."

Skinner was given permission by Boston College last week to speak with St. John's about its coaching vacancy. It appears as though Skinner won't get that job, as former UCLA coach Steve Lavin is rumored to be the top choice for the Red Storm.

Boston College was just 15-16 this past season, its second losing record in the past three years. Skinner directed the Eagles to a mark of 247-165 in 13 seasons, leading BC to seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Eagles reached the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament just once under Skinner, losing to Villanova in the 2006 tourney to complete a 28-8 season.

"All of us at Boston College have great respect for coach Skinner," DeFilippo added. "We are grateful for his achievements over the course of the past 13 years."

Skinner spent nine years at Rhode Island before taking over the BC job and has a career record of 385-291.

DeFilippo said the school will begin the search process for a new coach immediately.

The Boston Globe, which first reported the news Tuesday, has indicated that Boston College is interested in Richmond's Chris Mooney, Cornell's Steve Donahue, Harvard's Tommy Amaker and Northeastern's Billy Coen as potential replacements.
