    Daily Sports Roundup: March 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Bruins play host to the Sabres, while the Spurs meet the lowly Nets, and the Lakers search for a road win in New Orleans.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up five games Monday, with Toronto at Charlotte, San Antonio at New Jersey, Denver at Dallas, New York at Utah, and the Lakers at New Orleans. The Hornets will be looking to bounce back from a 112-101 home loss to the Trail Blazers on Saturday night. Darren Collison led New Orleans with 22 points off the bench in that defeat, while Chris Paul was held to seven points. The Lakers picked up a road win in Houston on Saturday night, winning 109-101 behind 30 points from Pau Gasol. Kobe Bryant poured in 17 points in the contest.

As well, there's one college basketball game on the schedule for Monday, with Saint Louis taking on Virginia Commonwealth in the first game of the best-of-three CBI championship series. Saint Louis topped Princeton 69-59 in their semifinal matchup last week, while VCU is coming off an 88-75 win over Boston University. VCU is listed as the 9.5-point favorite for Monday, with a total of 131.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Monday, with Carolina at Atlanta, Nashville at Florida, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Dallas at Anaheim, and Buffalo at Boston. The Sabres throttled the Lightning in their last game on Saturday night, winning 7-1 at home behind a hat trick from Derek Roy. Jason Pominville picked up three points in the win. The Bruins blanked the Flames 5-0 in their Saturday afternoon outing, with Tim Thomas making 31 saves. Patrice Bergeron had a goal and an assist in Saturday's victory.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The Dallas Mavericks opened as 4.5-point favorites over the Denver Nuggets and the line quickly rocketed to 5.5 at some books.

Butler opened as a 1-point favorite over Michigan State but the line jumped to 1.5 right out of the box. The total dropped from 127 to 126.

Virginia Commonwealth opened as a 9.5-point favorite over St. Louis, but the line has dropped to 9. The total fell from 131 to 130.

      Weather to watch

Rain spoiled the finish in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida and the start of the Goody's 500 in Virginia, which is great news for all those unemployed golf/NASCAR fans out there. Rather than watching constant "SportsCenter" re-reruns, they can catch live action on the greens and asphalt. Both events will be held today under sunny skies.

      Who's hot

Los Angeles Lakers are 8-1 SU in their last nine.

Boston Celtics are 6-1 ATS in their last seven.

Utah Jazz are 6-2 SU and ATS in their last eight.

Buffalo Sabres are 5-1 in their last six.

      Who's not

New Orleans Hornets are 2-8 SU in their last 10.

Denver Nuggets are 0-7-1 ATS in their last eight.

Dallas Mavericks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight.

      Key stat

13 - Combined total of the seeds in this year's Final Four, the fourth highest total in NCAA Tournament modern history. Two of those years saw No. 11 seeds reach the Final Four - LSU in 1986 and George Mason in 2006. Thirteen also is Michigan State's total margin of victory in their four tourney wins.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf is questionable for Monday night's game against the Dallas Stars with an ankle injury and his absence or presence will have a big impact on the game. Getzlaf has 19 goals for the Ducks and, more importantly, a whopping 50 assists. He truly is the straw that stirs the Ducks' drink, so keep an eye on the injury report before betting either side of this one.

      Game of the day

      Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

      Notable quotable

"There is nothing greater than going to a Final Four that I know of ... except winning it."

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said after the Spartans defeated Tennessee 70-69 on Sunday to reach his sixth Final Four since 1999.

      Tips and notes

The rain-delayed Goody's 500 gives bettors a rare chance for some Monday afternoon NASCAR action, and there will be a lot of action. Heavy rains not only set the field by points and postponed the start until noon Monday, it also washed all the rubber off the track, which will lead to slick condition around the tight Martinsville Speedway. Taking the usual suspects will be risky since there will be a whole lot of bumper-banging.

After using a two-platoon system at goalie all season, the Predators finally named Pekka Rinne the starter over Dan Ellis. They are 7-2 since making the move, including Saturday's 1-0 loss to Detroit in an 11-round shootout. Rinne has three shutouts and has allowed only 14 goals in that nine-game stretch. If he's not worn out from Saturday's marathon, the Panthers lack the fire power to cool his hot streak.

The CBI's home-and-away title series brings a true home-court advantage to tonight's opener at Virginia Commonwealth, which is 17-1 SU under its own roof. Despite a strong finish, St. Louis is just 5-5 on the road and 0-3 on neutral courts. The Billikens suffered their worst loss of the season just down the road at Richmond, 62-36. The Rams defeated Richmond 65-57 at home.

        Monday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Philadelphia Phillies........

        21) Joe Savery, LHP--Rice alum went 16-6 in 27 minor league starts in '09; trying to end trend of Rice pitchers disappointing as pros.

        9) Antonio Bastardo, LHP-- 2-3, 6.46 in six big league starts LY; could be a situational reliever, if he can get past persistent shoulder issues.

        8) Jarred Cosart, P-- Won't be 20 until May; batters hit .143 against him in his pro debut LY (24 IP). He was 2-2, 2.22 in five starts.

        5) Trevor May, P-- 5-2, 2.72 in 17 minor league starts; Hitters in South Atlantic League hit only .211 against him in 77 innings LY.

        4) Travis D'Arnaud, C-- Hit .255 with 13 HRs in Class A LY; brother is a shortstop in Pirate chain. They traded Marson in Cliff Lee deal due to the confidence they have in D'Arnaud being their catcher in 2012.

        1) Domonic Brown, OF-- Should be in AAA after hitting .417 in his 24 ABs in spring training; resembles Darryl Strawberry in build, but hasn't shown that kind of power. Yet.

        ************************************************** *

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

        13) Credit to Duke grabbing 22 offensive rebounds against Baylor, but the charge call against Acy was a six-point swing, and Bears fell apart after it was made. Terrible call, but the underdog has to overcome adversity like that, and Baylor didn't. Too bad, it was a fun game to watch. As I sat and watched I'm thinking, the team with the better players lost.

        12) Someone still has to explain to me how Duke got to play the winner of the play-in game, and how they passed Syracuse as the #3 top seed. Maybe its me, but the Blue Devils get preferential treatment. Hopefully West Virginia will put an end to their season Saturday night.

        11) Tennessee-Michigan State was a terrific game; damn shame either side had to lose; Spartans are farther along than they deserve to be. Credit to Izzo, one of the best college coaches of all-time- he's been in Final Four in six of the last twelve seasons, a damn impressive feat.

        10) Spartan players lifted injured PG Kalin Lucas on their shoulders so he could cut down the last part of the net; pretty cool.

        9) Early Final Four lines: Butler -1.5 over Michigan State; Duke -2 over West Virginia. There's a chance Darryl Bryant could play with orthotics in his shoe next week, to protect his broken foot.

        8) Last time Baylor made Final Four, Harry Truman was President.

        7) Dodger fans can't be real fired up that their Opening Day starter is the one and only Vicente Padilla; could be rough year in Chavez Ravine.

        6) Butler's report to the government on their basketball program last year showed a profit of $2; this year's bottom line should be slightly better.

        5) Why isn't bowling an Olympic sport? It could be the Summer Games' counterpart to curling. Who would be against this?

        4) Golf tournament and NASCAR race both got rained out Sunday; golf resumes at 10am. Martinsville race starts at noon.

        3) Fran McCaffery bolted Siena for Iowa, jumping off big fish in a small pond in order to coach a small fish in a very big pond. His wife is from Minnesota, so the move makes more sense than going to Seton Hall, but Lute Olson/Steve Alford left Iowa City on bad terms, and they ran Tom Davis out of town after a successful run-- seems like a difficult place.

        2) Siena graduates three starters this year, and figures to take a dip in the MAAC standings next winter; guess McCaffery didn't want to commit to being here longterm, so he bolts for bigger money, more pressure. For guy who seems thin-skinned with the media, he might not like Iowa much.

        1) Kevin Willard goes from Iona to Seton Hall and name being mentioned for Iona job is Richard Pitino Jr; Gaels figure to be favored in the MAAC next winter. Interesting to see how much pull the elder Pitino has to get his kid a pretty good entry-level head coaching job.

Game of the day: Nuggets at Mavericks
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks (-5.5, 211)

This is a matchup of two teams heading in different directions as the playoffs approach.

Denver, a .500 team on the road, has struggled due in large part to the loss to power forward Kenyon Martin to a knee injury.

The Nuggets recently snapped a three-game losing streak, its longest of the season thanks to a one-point win at Toronto. They’re trying to hold off Utah in the Northwest.

Dallas recently won 13 straight but is 3-4 since. Both teams are battling for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

          They needed that one

Carmelo Anthony helped the Nuggets snap their three-game losing streak on Friday. Melo missed a shot in the final seconds but the Nuggets got the rebound and gave him another shot which Anthony buried at the buzzer to give Denver a 97-96 win at Toronto.

But the warts are still apparent. Denver was outrebounded by the Raptors 58-38 in the game.

“Hey, man. Y’all better start rebounding the ball,” Martin told his post players.

Still, Denver had failed to cover the spread eight straight times.

          Injury report

Martin has missed the last dozen games with tendinitis in his left knee. He isn’t expected to return until mid-April. The Nuggets brought in a couple of journeymen to try to fill the void but didn’t end up signing either of them.

Instead they’ve gone with Frenchmen Johan Petro who has been serviceable but far from spectacular. Petro is averaging five points and six rebounds in Martin’s absence.

Martin’s loss has been felt mostly on the defensive end. Without him the Nuggets (5-7) are allowing 107 points a game, four points more that with him.

Denver’s Ty Lawson (shoulder) returned to the lineup recently but has played sparingly as Anthony Carter has been the first guard off the bench. Lawson is the better offensive option of the two.

For Dallas, center Brendan Hayward jammed his finger on Saturday but should be able to play tonight.

          A star is born

Roddy Beaubois is making a big case for extended playing time with the Mavs. The rookie from France scored 40 points in the Mavericks’ blowout win at Golden State on Saturday.

Just two nights before he played 48 seconds in a loss at Portland.

“I never know when I’m going to get in, but (coach Rick Carlisle) called my name, so I just know how to be aggressive,” Beaubois said. “I played my game.”

Beaubois opened the month with six straight double-figure scoring games, logging at least 22 minutes in each game but when the Mavs lost at Boston, the guard played just 27 seconds.

“He’s ready to play when called upon,” Carlisle said of Beaubois. “I’m the one that has to make the decisions on who plays, and I’ll live with those decisions.

“This is a hot topic, a lot of debate, and I’m one of the creators of it. I believe in the kid.”

          Butler’s doing it

The Mavericks are 16-5 since acquiring Caron Butler from Washington. Butler’s numbers with Dallas are virtually identical to those while with the Wizards (16 ppg, 5 rpg.) but the slick swingman from UConn helped the Mavs immediately embark on a 13-game winning streak.

          Coach vs. cancer

Battling throat cancer, Nuggets coach George Karl remains in the hospital to dissolve blood clots in his leg. The team hopes he’ll return for the playoffs.

Adrian Dantley was 5-4 in the interim heading into Sunday night’s game.

          Season’s meetings

The two teams have split a pair of games on the seasons, both at Denver. The Nuggets (30-6 at home on the season) won the latest one by 36 points and Dallas took the opener by eight points.

          Trend-setting

Dallas has been woeful at home against the number. The Mavs are 4-26-1 ATS in their last 31 home games. They’ve covered the spread just two of their last eight games overall.

Denver is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings between the two teams.

Denver is 6-0 ATS in the team’s last six meetings and the game has gone over the total in five of them.

The over is 8-2 the last 10 games that Denver has played a team with a winning percentage above .600.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Charlotte Bobcats (-8, 195.5)

Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown lit into his players following Saturday night's game against the Washington Wizards - a game in which they WON by 11 points.

After winning for the 11th time in their last 16 outings to pull into playoff position, the Bobcats were rewarded with an ass-ripping from Brown for sleepwalking through much of the game.

But there's a method to his madness. He knows if his team makes the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, the young players will have to turn up the intensity to make more than a cameo appearance.

"I don't know if I'm getting the message across," Brown told the Charlotte Observer. "No matter who we play, it's a playoff game. If we're fortunate enough to make it, I want to make sure we're playing our best."

It's working. Gerald Wallace is averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds per game in their current three-game winning streak and point guard Raymond Felton is posting 16 points and eight assists during that span.

Motivated by Brown and inspired by childhood hero-turned-team owner Michael Jordan, the pair of playoff virgins went a combined 16-for-22 from the field against the Wizards and still got grilled by Brown.

Now they lead their team against a schizophrenic Raptors team in the hunt for their playoff spot. Expect the Bobcats (5-0-1 ATS in their last six) to win big - and get chewed out by Brown.

            Pick: Bobcats

Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks (-5.5, 211)

The Denver Nuggets have been getting dunked like chicken nuggets during their current five-game, seven-day road trip, which ends tonight in Dallas.

The Nuggets allowed opponents to average 106 points per game and were outrebound by a total of 45 boards in the first three stops, a sure sign of either fatigue or a lack of intensity.

Denver is 1-3 SU on the road trip following Sunday night's loss to the Magic and 0-7-1 ATS in its last eight. Now the Nuggets face a long flight and a returning-home Mavericks team chasing them for playoff position.

Factor in the Nuggets' rare Toronto-to-Orlando-to-Dallas flight schedule and the Nuggets could fall to pieces.

            Pick: Mavs

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Minnesota Wild (N/A)

Minnesota's season is slipping away and so are the club's top defenders. Both goalies are less then 100 percent and four of the Wild’s top six defenseman are ailing according to the St. Paul Pioneer Express.

And of course bettors haven’t forgotten Mikko Koivu, the team’s best offensive player, is sidelined with an arm injury. Head coach Todd Richards gave his players the day off on Saturday to let them lick their wounds.

The Kings are trying to rekindle the success they enjoyed at the start of the campaign but it’s proving to be a difficult task. Los Angeles is 2-5 in its last seven games and has just two goals in its last two outings.

Head coach Terry Murray is trying his best to fight the offensive slump by reuniting his former top line of Ryan Smyth, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams.

The trio played together on Saturday against the Stars but registered just one marker (and that was on the power play).

"This was a premier line in the league at the start of the year,” Murray told the Los Angeles Times after Saturday’s 4-1 setback to the Stars. “Unfortunately [injuries] happen, but that's the way it goes in hockey. Now it's time to elevate games.”

Look for the Kings to break out against the injury ravaged Wild.

                      Pick: Kings

Nashville Predators at Florida Panthers (105, 5.5)

The Preds are playing some stingy hockey right now. They've allowed just one power play goal in their last 14 shorthanded situations and the under is 5-1 in their last six games.

Goalie Pekka Rinne is the chief reason for the defensive surge in Nashville. He’s starting nine straight games and the Preds won seven of the contests. The under is also 7-2 during Rinne’s hot run.

"He's moving really well and there's a confidence about him now," Nashville coach Barry Trotz told the Tennessean. "He is seeing the puck and tracking it. He has a rhythm going and has obviously been putting up the stats to back that up. It's good. You always want to get someone going the way he is."

Florida doesn’t have many offensive weapons to throw at the Predators.

                      Pick: Under
