    Daily Sports Roundup: March 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sprint Cup Series hits Martinsville, while the Nuggets meet the Magic, and March Madness wraps up its second weekend.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 10 games on its schedule for Sunday, with Sacramento at Cleveland, Memphis at Milwaukee, Indiana at Atlanta, Toronto at Miami, Chicago at Detroit, Phoenix at Minnesota, Portland at Oklahoma City, San Antonio at Boston, Golden State at the Clippers, and Denver at Orlando. The Nuggets and Magic met in Denver back on January 13, with Carmelo Anthony and company rolling to a 115-97 home win as a 6-point favorite. Anthony led the way with 27 points in that win for Denver, while Chauncey Billups was good for 24 points on the day. Matt Barnes scored a game-high 28 points in a losing cause for Orlando.

As well, the NCAA Tournament clears up its Final Four picture on Sunday with its last two Elite Eight matchups: No. 6 Tennessee vs. No. 5 Michigan State in the Midwest Region, and No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 1 Duke in the South Region. Duke, which cruised past Purdue 70-57 in the Sweet 16 on Friday, is pegged as the 4.5-point favorite at Houston's Reliant Stadium on Sunday. Baylor beat St. Mary's 72-49 in their Friday outing. Over at St. Louis' Edward Jones Dome the Spartans knocked off Cinderella Northern Iowa 59-52 in the Sweet 16, while Tennessee got past Ohio State by a final score of 76-73 last round. The oddsmakers are going with the Volunteers for Sunday, as they're 2-point faves.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League has six games on tap for Sunday, with Calgary at Washington, Toronto at Pittsburgh, Edmonton at St. Louis, New Jersey at Philadelphia, Colorado at San Jose, and Columbus at Chicago. The Blackhawks will be looking to bounce back from the 8-3 pounding they took from the Blue Jackets on the road on Thursday night; Hawks netminder Cristobal Huet was yanked after allowing seven goals on 27 shots in that defeat. Kristian Huselius and Antoine Vermette each picked up a pair of goals in that victory for Columbus.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, race fans get two events on Sunday, as the Sprint Cup Series stages the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway and Formula 1 offers up the Australian Grand Prix. Jimmie Johnson, who has won three of the five Sprint Cup events so far this season, is pegged as the 9/4 Vegas favorite to visit victory lane at Martinsville, with Jeff Gordon (51/10) and Denny Hamlin (7/1) behind him on that odds list. Tony Stewart (17/2) and Kevin Harvick (11/1) round out the top tier of contenders. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso will be gunning for his second straight win in the F1 race; Alonso won the season opener in Bahrain March 14, and he's at 5/2 to get the win on Sunday. Sebastian Vettel sits at 2/1 odds to win.

Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Memphis Grizzlies at Milwaukee Bucks – Andrew Bogut (back) missed the last game and is questionable. Carlos Delfino (neck) was carted off the floor in the team’s last game and is doubtful. Ersan Ilyasova (illness) missed the last game with the flu and is questionable.

Toronto Raptors at Miami Heat – Hedo Turkoglu (illness) is questionable with a stomach virus. Jermaine O’Neal (knee) only played seven minutes in the team’s last game and is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Blazers-Thunder total opened at 190.5 and can be found as high as 192 now. Portland has played to three straight unders and nine of the last 10 games in this series have gone under the posted total.

The total in the Warriors-Clippers game has elevated from an opener of 229 to 230 at most shops. Golden State has played to the over in 8-of-10 games.

      Who’s hot

The Pacers are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games.

Jonas Gustavsson has won six straight games behind a 1.92 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.

Duke has won seven straight and is 3-0 ATS in its last three outings.

      Who’s not

The Blackhawks have lost six of their last nine games, dropping 5.10 units on the moneyline.

Denver is 0-7 ATS in its last seven games.

      Key stat

13-3 – Portland Trail Blazers record in the second leg of back-to-back games – the best record in the NBA. The Blazers are getting 4.5 points on Sunday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andrew Bogut missed the Bucks last game and the majority of the previous game with a back injury. Milwaukee was only been able to muster 80.0 ppg without Bogut in those two games and got out-rebounded by seven and 10 boards. Kurt Thomas started in place of Bogut on Friday and posted four points and four rebounds.

      Games of the Day

Baylor Bears vs. Duke Blue Devils (-5, 139.5)

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Michigan State Spartans (+1.5, 136.5)

      Notable quotable

"We can't let up because of the situation we're in. There is no sense of feeling the pressure here. You lose a couple of games with so few left, you're done. You have to just go out and play."

-- New York coach John Tortorella said as the Rangers are five points out of the final playoff spot with eight games remaining.

      Tips and notes

      - The homecourt advantage for Baylor has been a debated topic. The South regional is played at Houston – a two and half hour drive from the school’s campus in Waco, Texas. Some bettors believe there isn’t any edge because they are shooting at different baskets. Others account for the 2.5 or 3 points for homecourt because of the fans. LaceDarius Dunn apparently thinks the large contingent of Bears fans in the arena is beneficial saying to CBS in an interview, “it helps us pick up our intensity on the court.”

      - Both South regional games in Reliant Stadium went under the posted total in the Sweet 16 round. Shooting sight lines for the players can be affected by the depth of a football stadium. The two totals from those games dropped significantly after opening and the Duke-Baylor total has been bet down two points at some shops.

      - They love him and then they hate him – such is the relationship between the Magic players and head coach Stan Van Gundy. After Orlando’s last-second loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, Rashard Lewis was heard mumbling about Van Gundy’s offense in the locker room. Matt Barnes was pulled off the court in the fourth quarter and said, “[Van Gundy] obviously doesn't trust me down the stretch.”

      - Covers interviewed Pete Korner of the Sports Club earlier this week and he said if the Spartans won their Sweet 16 game, he didn’t “give them much of a chance in the next round.” Korner mentioned that when a team loses a star player, like Kalin Lucas, they come out motivated in its first game but then the missed talent catches up with them in the second. The spread in the Tennessee-MSU game opened as a pick ‘em and now Tennessee is favored by 2.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Atlanta Hawks (-8, 207.5)

After trailing by seven at halftime, the Pacers roared back to beat the Jazz on Friday night behind Danny Granger’s 44 points.

The win extended Indiana’s streak to five games and while well out of the playoff picture, this team is relishing the upset role.

“Regardless of our situation, we're still competing,” Granger said this week. “We're still competitors. If we can kick somebody else out (of the playoffs), we'll try to do it.”

The Hawks are not playing to their potential heading into the postseason. They’ve dropped three straight on the road including a 105-98 loss to Philly on Friday.

"I am trying to tell the team and push these guys to understand that you have to beat teams you're supposed to beat," coach Mike Woodson said. "There are no gimme games.

Indiana is probably another “gimme” game in the eyes of Atlanta.

The Pacers have won eight straight against the spread and 11-of-12. Indy might not get out of Hotlanta with a sixth consecutive win but should be able to stay within the number

            Pick: Pacers

            Memphis Grizzlies at Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks have lost two straight (both at home) after winning 15-of-18 following the All-Star break.

Milwaukee’s offensive struggles over its last two games (80.0 ppg) have been in large part due to the absence of center Andrew Bogut. The 7-foot Aussie has missed most of the last two and the Bucks were out-rebounded by six and 10 boards.

To compound matters, Ersan Ilyasova (10.2 ppg) missed the last game with an illness and Carlos Delfino (10.8 ppg) left the game on a stretcher after suffering a neck injury.

"We were joking on the bench early on that we had a lot of leg room over there with everyone being out," guard Charlie Bell said. "Then when Carlos went down we just looked at the bench again and we were another man short.

The Grizzlies have placed themselves in a desperate situation having lost three of their last six games. Memphis trails Portland by five games for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.

"We feel that every game from here on out we have to come with the purpose that it is a playoff game," guard Mike Conley said. "We've got to win these games to have an opportunity.

Look for the Grizz to exert maximum effort in this one against a depleted Bucks squad.

            Pick: Grizzlies

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NCAA Tournament: Midwest regional Elite Eight picks
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    No. 5 Michigan State Spartans vs. No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (-1, 135.5), 2:20 p.m.

We will either see someone familiar or someone new go to the Final Four from the Midwest Regional.

Tennessee (28-8) is never been to the Elite Eight before this year, let alone a Final Four. Michigan State (27-8), one of the nation’s powers, seeks a sixth Final Four trip since 1999.

Finally, a team took advantage of Ohio State’s lack of depth. Tennessee had 10 players see action Friday, compared to OSU’s seven (one more than usual, due to foul trouble). Fatigue finally nailed the Buckeyes during crunch time and the Vols earned a 76-73 win.

“I told our team, ‘It’s our team vs. their six,’” Volunteers coach Bruce Pearl said after the victory. “We were a better 10 than their six.”

The J.P. Prince trend came through again for Tennessee. In the Vols’ last 13 games, they’re 10-0 when the 6-foot-7 guard scores in double figures and 0-3 when he doesn’t. He had 14 points, second on the team behind Wayne Chism, who had a great game down low, with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Michigan State rallied from a 7-point halftime deficit to get past upstart Northern Iowa 59-52.

And it was Korie Lucious who hit the big shot again. Thrown into the fire after the team’s best player, Kalin Lucas, went down with a ruptured Achilles, Lucious’ spin-around jumper in the closing moments clinched the victory.

Lucious scored 10 points, while Durrell Summers had 19 points and seven rebounds. Summers, who averages 10.7 ppg, had 26 points when the Spartans got past Maryland 85-83 in the second round and has become a big X-factor for MSU the way Prince is for Tennessee.

Tennessee outrebounded Ohio State 36-23, with a whopping 18 boards on the offensive end. The Spartans average nearly 10 more rebounds per game than their opponent. If the Vols can hold their own on the glass, that can go a long way.

Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said Tennessee’s defense had been under-covered by the media all season and it was the toughest his team had faced this season.

This may be a rare instance where the proof lies with the oddsmakers. In Tennessee’s last 48 games, the under is 33-14-1.

Lucious was a difference maker for MSU Friday. He also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals with only two turnovers. But compared to the “don’t let them get past you” defense of the Panthers, the Volunteers will unleash a new level of on-the-ball pressure the inexperienced point guard has yet to see.

And whereas Michigan State overmatched Northern Iowa in athleticism, the Spartans may look sluggish compared to their opponent Sunday.

The depth and athleticism of the Volunteers may finally be too much for the banged-up Spartans, who have gotten by with lots of heart but no Lucas and hobbled starters Chris Allen and Delvon Roe.

If Chism can stay out of foul trouble down low and not allow scores of second-half points by the Spartans — and make sure Lucious doesn’t thrive outside — Tennessee will be going to the Final Four for the first time.

Prediction: Tennessee 71, Michigan State 66

                        Sunday, March 28

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at St. Louis Blues (-215, 5.5)

How do you make a pick between the worst road team and the worst home team in the NHL?

Well, you have to decide which one has given up on the season and which is still playing.

"We're going to keep on winning hockey games," said St. Louis interim coach Davis Payne. "Until they tell us we're not eligible (for the playoffs), we're going to make sure that hey, if there's fight left in us, we're going to put it out there.”

The Oilers have been suprisingly good lately, winning three of their last four as underdogs of -200 or more, but they won’t get to double-digit road wins this season.

                        Pick: Blues

Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins (-215, 5.5)

Even out of the playoff picture, the Maple Leafs are playing competitive hockey.

Toronto has won eight of 11 heading into Saturday’s matchup against New York and much of that success has to do with goalie Jonas Gustavsson.

The rookie has won six straight games behind a 1.92 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. He is working on replacing Jean-Sebastien Giguere as the team’s No. 1 goalie heading into next season.

"It's good for our confidence," said Gustavsson of the Leafs’ recent success.

The Pens have produced three consecutive unders in the second leg of their last three back-to-backs.

Toronto has played to the under in six straight games and are also 3-0 under in its last three B2B situations.

                        Pick: Under
