              Saturday's NCAA games

Butler hasn't lost since Dec 22; they win this game, and they're playing Final Four at home. Bulldogs only have one senior starter. Kansas State blew 15-point lead Thursday, survived Xavier going 12-28 from arc, and had three guys play 40+ minutes 44 hours earlier. Those three guys took 61 of K-State's 78 shots vs Xavier. Wildcats beat Cleveland State by 29 LY, a team Butler beat by 9-11 points. Hard to give points to team that won its last 23 games and came back already in tournament (down six at half to UTEP in first round). Teams playing second game of weekend who played OT in first game are just 23-39 vs spread in this event.

West Virginia has to protect ball better; they had 23 turnovers Thursday its first game without PG Bryant; Mountaineers held opponents in this tournament to 30-33-39% from floor. Kentucky won by 29-30-17 so far in NCAAs, so they haven't had to fight for 40:00 yet. West Virginia has lot of athletic 6-7ish guys; if they beat Kentucky under 40% and hold its own on boards, Wildcats are in for 40:00 fight, and Mountaineers have mature players, older than Kentucky's. Wildcats beat UConn by 3 and Louisville by 9, in its two games vs Big East. WVa is a live dog here.

Kansas St. Wildcats vs. Butler Bulldogs [CBS | 4:30 PM ET]

Wildcats (-4, O/U 135): It's been a banner year for Kansas St. this year, so it's only fitting that they are one win away from their first Final Four in 46 years. Kansas St. beat Xavier both SU and ATS in an epic double overtime game, keeping their dreams alive for a school 1st National Championship. The Wildcats are 29-7 SU and 20-9-2 ATS overall this season. The Wildcats are 15-4 SU and 12-6-1 ATS away from home this season, including 8-2 SU in neutral court contests. Kansas St. is 14-3-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this season. Kansas St. plays their best basketball against their toughest opponents, going 17-6 ATS against teams with a winning record this season. G Jacob Pullen is coming off a game in which he scored 28 PTS, including 6 timely 3-pointers. Pullen lead the Wildcats this season in scoring, averaging 19.5 PPG. Their star PG Denis Clemente averaged 16.5 PPG and a team high 4.2 APG this season. This Wildcats offense is nearly unstoppable right now, as they've scored more than 80 PTS in 6 of their past 7 games.

Wildcats are 8-0-1 ATS last 9 non-conference games.

Butler beat #1 seed Syracuse, thanks to a very strong opening start. Ironically, the Bulldogs had come from behind in their 1st two games in the NCAA Tournament. You can never count out Butler when they fall behind, as they are 9-3 SU when trailing at the half. The Bulldogs have now won 23 consecutive games SU, and have set a school record for wins in a season with 31. Butler is 31-4 SU and 15-20 ATS overall this season. Mountaineers: West Virginia is easily playing their very best basketball at the perfect time, as they've won their past 9 games SU entering tonight's Elite Eight contest. Today marks only the 3rd time this season West Virginia has been the listed underdog. They are 1-1 both SU and ATS in this unique role this season. That includes games against high scoring Washington and Missouri. West Virginia uses an effective 1-3-1 zone that has held 6 consecutive opponents under 60 PTS. F Da'Sean Butler leads the team with 17.4 PPG this season, and is one of 3 Mountaineers to score more than 2,000 PTS in his career.

Wildcats (-4, O/U 133.5): Kentucky certainly appears to be on a mission, as they are demolishing opponents in the NCAA Tournament just like they did during the regular season. Kentucky has won their 3 tournament games by more than 25 PPG! Their latest victim was Cornell, who the Wildcats held to 45 PTS. The Wildcats have won their past 8 games SU, including the SEC Championship. With other #1 seeds being eliminated, the Wildcats are the odds on favorite to win the NCAA Tournament. Saturday six-pack

-- If Butler wins Saturday, they play the Final Four at home, or at least in their hometown of Indianapolis. Who would've guessed that?

-- The 4th-leading scorer on Duke scores only 5.4 ppg.

-- You see better basketball in arenas than domes; shooting background in domes is worse, and crowd noise disappears in bigger venues.

-- Felt bad for St Mary's, playing so poorly in such a big game; wonder if Randy Bennett gets back to this point if he'll put more of a lid on his players with the media. Omar Sanham was running amok this week.

-- Seth Greenberg parlayed St John's' interest in him into an extention of his contract with Virginia Tech. Red Storm is botching this hire bigtime.

-- Few years ago, Bob Huggins had a heart attack in the Pittsburgh airport; one of paramedics who saved his life is John Calipari's cousin.

Saturday's List of 13: 13 of my favorite mascots......

                            13) Mariner Moose- Once broke his ankle crashing into Kingdome wall as he was being pulled by a truck while riding on rollerblades

                            12) Sparky the Sun Devil (Arizona State)-- That evil grin with pitchfork in his hand is mascot for school attended by Steve Allen, Jimmy Kimmel, Al Michaels and the guy who is lead singer for the Gin Blossoms.

                            11) Bucky Badger-- Once met the short-legged omnivore here in Albany at the college hockey Frozen Four. Not much of a talker.

                            10) Youppi-- Montreal Expos' old mascot had an exclamation point on the back of his jersey; he's still around north of the border.

                            9) The Gorilla-- Best mascot in NBA history; Suns' old mascot became a celebrity in his own right. Not sure if he's around anymore.

                            8) Chief Osceola-- When he rides his horse to midfield and plants a spear in the ground at Florida State football games, its pretty cool.

                            7) Sparty-- Michigan State's mascot has a big head; not sure how he gets his head in the car to drive to the arena.

                            6) Bernie Brewer-- Was better at old County Stadium in Milwaukee; after a Brewer home run, he would slide into a big mug of beer. Now that we're more politically correct, he just slides onto a platform. Hideous.

                            5) Chief Noc-a-Homa-- Spreaking of things eliminated due to political correctness, the Braves' mascot who would do a dance after home runs by the Braves was terminated a long time ago. Too bad, he was fun.

                            4) Mr Peanut-- Longtime mascot of Planters' peanuts wears a monacle in his eye much like Colonel Klink did in Hogan's Heroes.

                            3) Mike the Tiger-- Real bengal tiger sits in a cage by the visitors' locker room in Baton Rouge. More than one LSU opponent has been spooked.

                            2) Sammie the Owl-- Got tossed from Rice basketball game last winter for bumping an official. Seriously.

                            1) Phillie Phanatic-- Universally regarded as best mascot ever. One of the first guys to be the Phanatic was the son of Delaware's football coach.
