I POSTED THIS BACK ON MARCH 18TH BEFORE THE RICHMOND GAME. ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT UP TO DATE, SOME OF THE REASONS TO PLAY THEM STILL HOLD FOR TONIGHT.
UPDATE:
Baylor's size can be beat by a team that can shoot 3's over their zone. St. Mary's is 5th in Division I shooting three's, hitting 41% as a team.
Don't Overlook St. Mary's
Don't overlook St. Marys because you don't know much about them. Most of their ESPN games didn't start until after 11 PM Eastern Time, which is why some of you may have not seen them play very often. They are 26-5 and of the five losses, only two were to teams not in the Top 25. They are known around here as the team with the Aussie Connection.
They lost to Gonzaga twice, but beat them to win the WCC Conference Tourney. They lost to Vandy by just two points and to a good Portland U team in OT, right after losing to Gonzaga, although they beat Portland the other two times they playedd. The worst team to beat them was USC.
In addition to Gonzaga, St. Mary's had good wins over San Diego State, New Mexico State and beat Utah State at Utah State breaking Utah States home winning streak at 36. Center Omar Samhan is 9th in the nation in rebounds, while Guard Mickey McConnell, leads the nation in three point pct. at 51.5%.
The only negative I'm concerned about is traveling cross country although they should be rested since their Tourney was a week before most other ones.
