Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres (-160, 5)

It took some time and a whole lot of Tylenol, but the Ottawa Senators have finally recovered from their Olympic hangover.

Ottawa is coming off back-to-back, 2-0 shutout victories over Montreal and Philadelphia after opening the second half of the NHL schedule 1-8. The Senators have locked it up on defense and have gotten solid performances from goaltender Brian Elliott in those two victories. He’s stopped a total of 55 shots in that span after allowing six goals in his most recent start.

Defenseman Anton Volchenkov should also get some credit for his play between the pipes. Volchenkov blocked five shots in Wednesday’s win over the Flyers including bailing Elliott out on two separate occasions.

“We were joking in the locker room that both of our goalies were stars for us,” captain Daniel Alfredsson told the Toronto Sun. “(Volchenkov’s) playing hard and has been very physical. Overall, I think we were more aggressive all over the ice.”

Ottawa’s turnaround has also given NHL totals bettors hope. The last two games have fallen under the number, and with a stingy Buffalo squad on tap Friday, the under is once again looking like the sharp play.

The Sabres are sixth in goals-against this season and lean on goaltender Ryan Miller, who hasn’t allowed more than three goals since February 11.

      Pick: Under

Minnesota Wild at Detroit Red Wings (-260, 5.5)

After a crumby start to the season, a lot of hockey fans were writing off the Detroit Red Wings just a few months after coming within one game of a second straight Stanley Cup.

Detroit has hushed those doubters in recent weeks, winning three straight games heading into Friday and taking victories in eight of its last 10 games. The Red Wings are currently in third place in the Central Division standings and have climbed into the eighth and final postseason spot in the Western Conference.

“We’ve been getting better since we’ve gotten our people back,” coach Mike Babcock told reporters when asked what has turned his team around.

Detroit was hobbled for most of the season, but since the extended Olympic break, the Red Wings have returned many injured players and gone 9-3 since the beginning of the month. A healthy home-ice advantage has helped as well. Detroit has won four straight games at Joe Louis Arena and is 21-10-2-3 at home this year – that includes a 5-1 win over the Wild two weeks ago.

      Pick: Detroit

Purdue Boilermakers at Duke Blue Devils [CBS | 9:57 PM ET]

Boilermakers: Purdue is looking to make it to the Elite Eight for the 1st time in a decade. Beating Duke won't be easy though, as Duke has the height advantage in all 5 starting positions. As a team, Purdue has the bulldog mentality of their head coach Matt Painter. That bulldog mentality served Purdue well the moment star F Robbie Hummel went down with a knee injury. Hummel had been arguably the Boilermakers most important player, but the players have moved on in his absence. Despite struggling to score on offense, Purdue beat Sienna and Texas AM both SU and ATS in reaching the Sweet 16. The Boilermakers are 29-5 SU and 14-18-2 ATS overall this season. Purdue is 15-3 SU and 7-9-2 ATS on the road this season. The Boilermakers are a perfect 3-0 both SU and ATS as the listed underdog this season. Today represents the largest spread that Purdue has faced as an underdog this season. Purdue is also 9-5 ATS in non-conference games this season. G E'Twaun Moore and C JaJuan Johnson lead Purdue in scoring, combining for nearly 32 PPG this season. These two will have to score in waves for Purdue to be successful, as no other player averages more than 6 PPG this sesaon for the Boilermakers.

Purdue is 7-3 ATS last 10 NCAA Tournament games as an underdog.
Under is 6-0 last 6 vs. Atlantic Coast.

Key Injuries - F Robbie Hummel (knee) is out.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 51

Blue Devils (-8.5, O/U 127): Duke is a very trendy pick to win the NCAA Tournament, regardless of whether or not you love them or hate them. There is no middle ground when polling opinions of the ever popular Blue Devils. All joking aside, this is a team hitting its stride as they've won 14 of their past 15 games SU. Duke is actually considered underrated this season, as some experts were questioning the fact they received a #1 seed into the tournament. The Blue Devils have responded by allowing only 97 PTS combined thru 2 rounds, and winning by a combined margin of 44 PTS. Duke is 31-5 SU and 20-13-2 ATS overall this season. The biggest reason for their success both SU and ATS this season is their defense. The Blue Devils have held 19 of their 36 game opponents under 60 PTS this season. Duke is 14-5 SU and 9-9-1 ATS on the road this season, including a perfect 9-0 SU in neutral court games. Duke is 20-14 ATS as the listed favorite this season, including 7-6-1 ATS as a single digit favorite. 3 different Blue Devils average more than 17 PPG this season, led by G Jon Scheyer. Scheyer averages team highs of 18.1 PPG and 4.9 APG this season.

                          Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for March 26, 2010 from Len Berman.

                          1. Quick Hits

There are 4 more NCAA tournament games tonight. After this evening's action there will be 8 teams left standing (All Times Eastern).

                          *Tennessee/Ohio State 7:07pm
                          *St. Mary's/Baylor 7:27pm
                          *Northern Iowa/Michigan State 9:37pm
                          *Purdue/Duke 9:57pm

Butler, West Virginia, Kentucky and Kansas State were last night's winners.
Anybody want to coach St. John's basketball? Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt says no thanks.
Alex Rodriguez talks to federal authorities today in Buffalo about his relationship with a Canadian doctor under investigation for drugs.
Former ABC, NBC and ESPN executive Chet Simmons is dead at the age of 81.

                          2. Reality Bites

Ouch. I'm sure some Cornell fans fancied a trip to the Final Four, and even a ride to the championship. But after watching those athletes from Kentucky for a couple of minutes, you knew it wasn't going to happen. Oh, that 10-2 Cornell lead was heady. But then they managed only 35 points the rest of the way. Maybe the same fate awaits Northern Iowa tonight. The tournament gives you little glimpses of "anything is possible," and then talent and pedigree throw cold water in your face. Is that an argument for or against expanding the field to 96 teams? Cinderella will always run smack into midnight, but it's a fun ride while it lasts.

                          3. Filtering the News

What's the difference between the University of Florida football program and China? That's a trick question. There isn't much difference. While China messes with Google, Florida is dumping on reporters. Coach Urban Meyer didn't like how the quotes of one of his players turned up in a column so he confronted the reporter. The newspaper was threatened with banishment, and players and coaches were off limits to all reporters after practice the other day. Just the latest example of a college coach who doesn't know how to lead. But of course the school will stand behind him because he wins football games.

                          4. Friday eMailbag

In response to Education Secretary Arne Duncan's proposal that college basketball teams should have a 40% graduation rate to qualify for the NCAA tournament, G.M. writes, "Since 40% is a failing grade in any school, might it be more appropriate to require players be able to sink 70% or more of their foul shots? After all, if we're preparing these basketball players for life after college in the NBA, being able to make free throws would seem more appropriate."

When I wrote about Cornell broadcasters vis a vis Syracuse's, A.K. added the following to the Cornell list: "Bill Maher, Ann Coulter and Ken Dryden (Miracle on Ice).
Editor's Note: Oh yeah, I'll see you and raise you Orangemen Ted Koppel, Dick Clark, and Joe Biden......no wait a second.

S.L. wants to know if I'm working on a Passover-related Top 5. He suggests the Jews trekking through the desert was the "longest marathon.... 40 years."
Editor's Note: Just typical athletes where "bread" was the issue.

And when I mentioned the Nets Jewish Family Night and facetiously suggested they should stage a live bris at halftime, D.P. suggested on twitter @LenBermanSports, with the Nets shooting accuracy, the mohel would probably miss.

                          5. Reeling Them In

So what sport has been booming during the recession? Fishing. Fishing license applications are up, and in 2009 the number of fisherman in the U.S. showed a rare increase. Obviously with unemployment, people have lots of time on their hands, so off to the lake/river/ocean they go. So can Olympic fishing be in our future? Ice fishing for sure in the Winter Games. The winners could stand on the podium with their medals and their catch. Good times.

Happy Birthday: Raiders running back Marcus Allen. 50.
Bonus Birthday: Stop in the Name of Love. Diana Ross of The Supremes. 66.

Today in Sports: Led by Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West, The LA Lakers set a record of 69 wins in an NBA season. (Later broken by Michael and the Bulls.) 1972.
Bonus Event: Dr. Jonas Salk announces his polio vaccine. 1953.
