    Daily Sports Roundup: March 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins take on the Capitals on the ice, while the Lakers meet the Spurs, and the Cavs seek a win over the Hornets.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 11 games on its schedule for Wednesday, including Cleveland at New Orleans. LeBron James and the Cavaliers enter Thursday's road matchup riding a seven-game winning streak that has put them at 56-15 SU and 34-35-2 ATS on the season. Cleveland beat Detroit 104-79 in their last game on Sunday, with James scoring 15 points to go along with seven assists. The Cavs got past the Hornets 105-95 as an 11.5-point home favorite in their first meeting of the season back on February 23. James picked up 20 points in that victory, while New Orleans played without Chris Paul - who returned from injury Monday night.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Wednesday: Orlando at Atlanta, Utah at Toronto, Minnesota at Charlotte, Washington at Indiana, Denver at Boston, Sacramento at New Jersey, Houston at Oklahoma City, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Memphis at Golden State, and the Lakers at San Antonio. Los Angeles has won six games in a row heading into Wednesday night, which puts them at 52-18 SU and 29-39-2 ATS on the season. The Lakers got past Washington 99-92 in their last game on Sunday, and they're 1-1 against San Antonio so far this season. Los Angeles claimed the last meeting between the teams 101-89 at home back on February 8.

As well, the National Invitational Tournament finishes off its quarterfinal round on Wednesday night with Rhode Island vs. Virginia Tech and Dayton vs. Illinois. There are also semifinal games in both the CBI and CIT events on Wednesday night; the CBI offers up Boston University vs. VCU and Princeton vs. Saint Louis, and in the CIT it'll be Pacific vs. Appalachian State and Creighton vs. Missouri State. The NCAA Tournament continues with its Sweet 16 round Thursday night.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up six games on Wednesday, with the Islanders at the Rangers, Montreal at Buffalo, St. Louis at Detroit, Los Angeles at Colorado, Anaheim at Vancouver, and Pittsburgh at Washington. The 48-14-10 Capitals are riding high atop the Eastern Conference standings with 106 points heading into their Thursday matchup, and they're 7-1-2 in their last 10 contests. Washington is also 2-0 against Pittsburgh so far this season, winning the most recent meeting 5-4 in overtime at home on February 7. Alex Ovechkin had a hat trick in that win.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Philadelphia 76ers at Milwaukee Bucks – Andre Iguodala (foot) has been dealing with plantar fasciitis but hasn’t missed a game and is probable. Louis Williams (back) did not play on Monday and is out.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals – Evgeni Malkin (foot) did not play in the last game and is questionable. Brook Laich (eye) took a puck to the face on Saturday and is questionable.

Anaheim Ducks at Vancouver Canucks - Bobby Ryan (flu) missed the team’s last two games and is questionable. Saku Koivu took a puck to the face on Sunday and is questionable.

Line to keep an eye on

The Celtics quickly moved from opening as 3.5-point favorites over the Nuggets to 4.5-point chalk. Boston has been red-hot lately, going 4-1 ATS while Denver has dropped four straight ATS.

      Who’s hot

The Spurs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games.

Princeton has won six games in a row and is 8-2 ATS in its last 10.

Detroit has won two straight and is 7-3 SU in its last 10 outings.

      Who’s not

Chauncey Billups is shooting at a 23.6 clip (9-for-38) from the field over his last three games.

The Rangers have dropped three straight, losing 3.75 units on the moneyline.

Missouri State is 1-5 ATS in its last six games.

      Key stat

21-9 – Suns record since Robin Lopez entered the starting lineup.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

According to a report by Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday, Nuggets coach George Karl could be absent from the team until the postseason. Denver is 5-2 under assistant Adrian Dantley, but if Karl does miss the remainder of the regular season that could create chemistry problems for the players from a coaching standpoint.

      Game of the Day

Denver Nuggets at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 206)

      Notable quotable

"If you're really going to hurt a player, knee to knee, make a head hit, and you're out for the season, then let them suspend that player for the rest of the season. I'll tell you, you wouldn't see those knee-to-knee and head hits anymore. If any one of our great players put Ovechkin out for the season, he should be out for the season, too."

-- Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz suggesting that Alexander Ovechkin should be suspended for the remainder of the season for his violent hit on Brian Campbell.

      Tips and notes

      - Rangers coach John Tortorella is desperate to get his team out of a losing rut where it’s dropped seven of eight. Tortorella switched line combinations a total of 15 times in the third period of Saturday’s game, a 2-1 loss to Boston. The constant line switching hasn’t helped yet and the tactic may leave New York out of the playoff picture.

      - With a stronghold on the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference standings, it appears Magic coach Stan Van Gundy is going to do some experimenting – never a thing Orlando bettors want to hear. Van Gundy plans to put Marcin Gortat, Brandon Bass or Ryan Anderson on the floor with Dwight Howard at times. He is toying with this strategy because Orlando could face some big frontcourts in the playoffs.

      - Chris Paul returned to action Monday night and was surprisingly placed in the starting lineup. The Hornets announcers talked about how the team was out of sync early in the game with two new starters, Paul and Marcus Thornton, on the floor. Paul was limited to 20 minutes of action and apparently asked to play more but the coach said no. Jeff Bower has hinted that he wants to see how his point guards, Paul and Darren Collison, mesh on the floor together.

        Wednesday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the top prospects for the Twins

        24) Trevor Plouffe, SS-- Signed for $1.5M after '04 draft, hasn't gotten to majors yet, but he hit .260 with 10 HRs in AAA LY.

        20) Jeff Manship, P-- 1-1, 5.68 in 11 big league appearances LY, five of which were starts. Big leaguers hit .310 against Notre Dame alum.

        6) Danny Valencia, 3B-- Twins have used 17 different guys at the hot corner since end of '04 season; this guy hit .286 LY in 269 AB at AAA.

        5) Ben Revere, OF-- Drafted out of a Kentucky HS, he's
hit .337 with 110 steals in 996 career AB. Will start this season in AA.

        3) Kyle Gibson, P-- Missouri has had three pitchers drafted in the first round over last four years. Had stress fracture in his arm last year.

        1) Aaron Hicks, OF-- 20-year old switch-hitter is raw but talented.

        ******************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Random stuff as life gboes back to normal

First weekend of NCAA tournament is my favorite weekend of the year; double so when I'm in Las Vegas for it. Life goes back to normal now; it is time to get ready for baseball and warm weather here in the northeast and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, which resumes Thursday.

        13) Very bad news for West Virginia-- Darryl Bryant broke his foot, is done for the tournament. Makes Mountaineers very thin at guard, but it also makes them bigger, and in some cases, harder to guard.

        12) Strange that the NFL would put it new rules for overtime in playoff games, but not regular season games. They still might make these rules good for the regular season when they meet again in May.

        11) The Nets' CEO got into a verbal jousting match with a fan wearing a bag over his head at a recent home game. CEO actually asked the guy why he was wearing a bag on his head. Something about a 7-61 record.......

        10) St John's is meeting with Paul Hewitt; if they're smart, they'll get his name on a contract as soon as possible. He's very good, and St John's will be relevant in the Big East if they hire him. Not really sure who Georgia Tech thinks they can hire who is better than Hewitt.......

        9) Before the tournament started, Cornell was ranked 66th in country by kenpom.com; the seven teams just ahead of them all missed the NCAAs.

        8) Northern Iowa is first MVC team since Larry Bird's Indiana State club in 1979 to make Sweet 16; Penn is first Ivy League team since '79 to get to Sweet 16. Both those teams lost to Michigan State in '79 Final Four.

        7) Since 2001, #1 seeds are 20-13 vs spread in regional semifinals, 14-11 when playing 4-5 seeds, 6-2 when playing anyone else.

        6) Kentucky beat 16-seed and 9-seed last week; they're playing Cornell (12-seed) next (they're good but they don't give athletic scholarships) and could face 11-seed Washington in regional final, especially now that the Mountaineers' starting PG is out. Last time a team faced such low-seeds in advancing through the tournament? Michigan State, in 2001.

        5) Over last five years, underdogs are 21-19 vs spread in this round, with ten outright upsets.

        4) Since 1993, there have been eight games between 3-10 seeds in regional semifinals: underdogs were 5-3 vs spread in those games.

        3) Northern Iowa-Michigan State is just second regional semifinal game ever between 5 and 9-seeds; Boston College (+3) upset Indiana 77-68 in 1994, in the only other one.

        2) Looking back quickly, over the last three years, #3 seeds are now 8-1 against the spread in the second round. Can't come up with reason why.

        1) Looking at teams like Northern Iowa, that upset a #1 seed in second round-- they're 5-5 vs spread in next game, 5-3 as dogs, 0-2 as favorite. Michigan State, with Lucas hurt, is favored by only a point and a half.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Toronto Raptors (+3, 214)

Monday’s win over the Celtics was a big one for the Jazz and not just because it was against a tough veteran team. Mehmet Okur played one of his best games of the season against the C’s and came up with several key defensive plays.

"The big thing, he kept rebounding the ball as well," Utah coach Jerry Sloan told the Salt Lake Tribune after the Jazz's 110-97 victory against Boston. "That's critical to do that when you play a team like [Boston].”

Okur finished with 14 points but also contributed with 15 boards. The contribution was a welcome sight for a player who’s going through his worst season as a member of the Jazz.

Utah is a much better team when the big center is active and part of the offense. His long-distance shooting spreads the floor and makes it easier for Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer to run the pick ‘n’ roll effectively.

Of course it doesn’t really matter when you’re playing the Raptors. Toronto’s defense resembles rusty lawn chairs in a light practice.

                Pick: Jazz

Sacramento Kings at New Jersey Nets (+1.5, 197)

Nets ownership understands the frustration and embarrassment its fans are coping with. They just don’t want to hear about it.

ESPN.com is reporting that Nets CEO Brett Yormark shouted at a fan for wearing a paper bag over his head. Can you really blame the fan? Honestly?

The only time the club’s backers can make any cash is when the Nets are getting major points. New Jersey is 11-1 against the spread in its last 12 games getting eight or more points.

That’s not going to be the case Wednesday night against the visiting Kings who are also missing their best player (Tyreke Evans).

                Pick: Kings

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Nuggets at Celtics
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 206)

                  History lesson

These two teams last met on Feb. 21 in Denver. The Nuggets won that game 114-105, covering as 4.5-point chalk.

That game flew over the posted total as both teams shot better than 51%. Both meetings last season played under the number, totaling just 179 and 190 points.

The road team won both matchups outright a year ago, but the home side remains 8-2 ATS over the last 10 meetings in this series.

                  East vs. West

Only two games separate the Nuggets and Celtics in the standings, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to the media.

Boston has been getting ragged on for months, only recently starting to receive some positive press thanks to a four-game winning streak (which ended on Monday night in Utah).

On Monday, Paul Pierce told reporters that he and his team are getting better every day.

“We want to be healthy, we want to be playing well, and that’s where we’re at right now,’’ Pierce said. “I’m feeling pretty good out there, man. The rhythm, the way I’m moving, the way I’m getting off the floor, getting up and down the court. It’s really starting to come together.’’

Denver has been the picture of consistency this season, losing more than two consecutive games only once. It’s easy to forget that they’re just a .500 team (17-17) away from home.

                  On the road again

The Nuggets kicked off one of their toughest road trips of the season on Tuesday night in New York. It’s only a five-gamer, but it will take them all over the map.

After playing in Beantown on Wednesday, they’ll head to Toronto, Orlando, and Dallas for a three game in four night trek.

Chauncey Billups isn’t exactly looking forward to living out of a suitcase for the next week.

"Brutal. Brutal road trip coming up playing against some teams that are playing really well," Billups told reporters on Monday. "We're in an intense dogfight over here, trying to maintain home-court advantage and win the division. We can have a good trip, but we have to focus on one team at a time."

Note that Denver is just 6-10-2 ATS when playing the second of back-to-back nights this season.

                  Home fires burning (money)

The Celtics have done a nice job defending their home court this season, posting a 21-12 SU record. That hasn’t translated into cash for their backers however, as they’ve gone a miserable 10-22-1 ATS at TD Garden.

Tonight’s game will be the first of six in a row at home for the Celtics. The homestand will see them face five consecutive Western Conference opponents before wrapping up with a date with the Cavs on April 4th.

Boston currently owns a 6-4 SU record in home games against West foes this season.

                  Cover troubles

The Nuggets haven’t done their backers any favors lately, dropping the cash in each of their last four games. Since starting the season 13-8 against the number, they’ve gone 18-26-5 ATS.

The Celtics have been one of the worst bets in the league for much of the season, but have shown signs of life recently. While they remain 10 games under .500 from a betting perspective, they have managed to post an 8-4-1 ATS record over their last 13 contests.
