    Daily Sports Roundup: March 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NIT fills the college hoops void, while the Bruins battle the Thrashers, and the Knicks try to fend off the visiting Nuggets.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up four games on Tuesday night, with Charlotte at Washington, Indiana at Detroit, the Clippers at Dallas, and Denver at New York. The Nuggets (47-23 SU, 31-34-5 ATS) were beaten 102-97 at home by Milwaukee in their last game on Saturday, with Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony both scoring 29 points in that defeat. The Knicks (25-45 SU, 32-37-1 ATS) lost 116-112 at home in their game against Houston on Sunday despite 27 points and 20 rebounds from David Lee. Denver beat New York 128-125 at home back on November 27.

As well, there are a couple of quarterfinal matchups in the National Invitational Tournament on Tuesday night, with Texas Tech vs. Mississippi at 7pm ET and North Carolina vs. UAB at 9pm ET. The Tar Heels got past Mississippi State by a score of 76-74 in the last round of the tournament, getting 17 points from Will Graves in the victory. The Blazers had no trouble at all in their second-round matchup against N.C. State, as Elijah Millsap poured in 27 points in a 72-52 win. UAB is pegged as a 4-point favorite for Tuesday night, with the total at 136 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 10 games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Tuesday, including Boston at Atlanta. The 32-27-12 Bruins improved their playoff outlook on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 home win over the Rangers. Miroslav Satan and Dennis Wideman had the goals for Boston in that contest, while Tuukka Rask made 23 saves to earn the victory. The 32-29-11 Thrashers grabbed a 3-1 win in Philadelphia in their last game on Sunday. Ron Hainsey, Todd White, and Rich Peverley all scored for Atlanta in that win, while Ondrej Pavelec stopped 44 of 45 shots. The Thrashers are riding a four-game win streak.

Also on the ice on Tuesday: Columbus at New Jersey, Florida at Toronto, Carolina at Tampa Bay, Philadelphia at Ottawa, Dallas at Nashville, Phoenix at Chicago, Vancouver at Edmonton, Anaheim at Calgary, and San Jose at Minnesota. The 43-19-10 Sharks carry a six-game losing streak into their game against the Wild on Tuesday; San Jose was beaten 5-1 in Edmonton in their last outing on Sunday. The 35-31-6 Wild beat Calgary 4-3 on Sunday as they make a last-ditch effort to get into a playoff spot. San Jose is 2-0 vs. Minnesota this year.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

Anaheim Ducks at Calgary Flames – Bobby Ryan (flu) missed the team’s last game and is questionable. Saku Koivu took a puck to the face Sunday and is questionable. Curtis Glencross (knee) has missed the last two games and is questionable. Daymond Langkow (head) was injured Sunday and is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Clippers-Mavericks total opened at 206 and has dropped to 205. Three of the last four games in this series have gone under.

The Devils opened as a -209 favorite over the Blue Jackets but that moneyline can be found as high as -230 now. New Jersey has taken two straight from Columbus.

      Who’s hot

The Thrashers have won four games in a row (all as underdogs), earning 5.16 units on the moneyline.

Indiana has won five straight ATS and is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games.

Ole Miss has covered the spread in six of its last seven games.

      Who’s not

The Mavericks were 0-4 ATS in their last four heading into Monday’s game.

San Jose has lost six straight games, dropping 10.1 units on the moneyline.

North Carolina is 3-6 ATS in its last nine outings.

      Key stat

5-1 – Nuggets record this season without head coach George Karl. Karl is going to miss Denver’s five-game road trip that begins with New York on Tuesday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas will miss the remainder of the NCAA Tournament after tearing his Achilles tendon on Sunday. Lucas led the Spartans in scoring this year with a 14.8 ppg average. There hasn’t been a final verdict on the severity of the injury but doctors believe the Achilles is torn because he cannot walk on it. Lucas’s replacement in the starting lineup, Korie Lucious, hit the game-winning 3-pointer versus Maryland.

      Notable quotable

"Where does that come from? Seriously. It's something that cracks me up. I don't play rookies? I don't like to play bad rookies."

-- Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said in response to Jordan Hill’s remark that he couldn’t “strut his stuff” when he was with New York because D’Antoni didn’t play rookies

      Tips and notes

      - As the Bruins attempt to hold onto the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot, team vice president Cam Neely tried to invigorate the troops with some harsh words. Neely said the team has played with a “lack of emotion” this season. He also criticized the veterans by saying there has been a “loss of leadership and character in the locker room.” Boston has won nine straight versus Atlanta and may look to prove its VP wrong on Tuesday.

      - Denver begins a brutal road trip on Tuesday without the services of Kenyon Martin and coach George Karl. Even thought the Nuggets have been good without their coach, they will face elite teams like Boston, Orlando and Dallas on this trip that will surely test Adrian Dantley. Chauncey Billups recently said not having Martin on the floor has created “a hole defensively.” Denver is giving up 102.1 ppg without him.

      - Rookie Toney Douglas is the Knicks fifth different starter at point guard this season and he seems to be working out. Douglas has averaged 20.0 points and 4.8 assists per game since entering into a starting role, and New York has gone 3-2 SU and ATS – winning twice as underdogs. Douglas said that he and the coaches both have “confidence” in his abilities and that has made him feel “comfortable” on the court.

        Tuesday six-pack

-- Rumors are strong that when all the colleges finish shufling to their new leagues, Boise State will wind up in the Mountain West.

-- If Carl Crawford is a Bronx Bomber in 2010, I'm going to puke.

-- Arena in Providence in Dunkin' Donuts Center; read someone calling it the Donut Dome this weekend, and from now on, thats what we'll be calling it on this website. Excellent name.

-- Buzz Peterson played at UNC, worked for Michael Jordan with the Bobcats; Marcus Jordan plays for Central Florida, so it figures that Peterson is one of the candidates to be UCF's new coach.

-- East Carolina hired Jeff Lebo as coach, proving that being a Tar Heel alum carries a lot of weight in that state.

-- Next two big events; Opening Day of baseball season and release of the 2010 NFL schedule. Next couple weeks are research weeks for me, that and trying to re-establish some sort of sleep pattern.

Tuesday's List of 13: 13 things I (re)learned on my trip to Vegas.....

        13) Gambling and alcohol are a bad combination; guy sitting next to me at the bar late Saturday night: "I've lost so much bleeping money here they should name a wing of the bleeping building after me." Good stuff.

        12) The plane ride out here seems a lot shorter than the ride home.

        11) If I was A-Rod or Eldrick Woods, I'd have a mansion in Vegas, would never have gotten married and I'd have a hell of a lot of fun. Las Vegas is a totally money-driven place; middle class nitwits like myself can only be here 10-12 days a year. If I was really rich, Vegas would be home.

        10) I learned that it is stupid to invest in first-round underdogs that can't shoot the 3-pointer, and yes, North Texas, that means you.

        9) I learned that when lot of people strut around wearing the t-shirt of the #1 team and then that team gets beat, everyone not wearing the t-shirt of that team is very happy. There was pandemonium in the sports book at MGM as Northern Iowa celebrated its win over Kansas.

        8) Speaking of Kansas, there were very attractive young ladies rooting for the Jayhawks Saturday and yes, they seemed to know the game. I live in a state where women see sports as a nuisance. Should live in Kansas.

        7) Last Jayhawk note: one Kansas fan is chewing out his buddy when he was rooting for Northern Iowa Saturday. Friend replies, "I like rooting for Kansas, but I love money, and I bet on Northern Iowa." 'nuff said.

        6) If you think Frank Martin's facial expressions make him look mean on your TV, you should see him on the really big screen at the sportsbook. I mean it, if it turned out he was a mass murderer, it wouldn't surprise me for a second. He's my hero though, was a student manager in high school, because he couldn't make the team. Just like someone else you know.

        5) Las Vegas is bad for sleep patterns, as in, destructive. I was eating two hot dogs late the other night and I looked at my cellphone and it says 3:30 in the morning, as in, 6:30am where I live. Good hot dogs, though.

        4) 5.4 million people entered brackets in ESPN's contest; no one had the whole Sweet 16, and only four people had 15 out of 16.

        3) Room I stayed in at Planet Hollywood last fall was better than the one I stayed in at MGM Grand this week; lot better. Of the 39 TV channels at MGM Grand, eight aren't in English; three Spanish, five Oriental.

        2) When I was in 10th grade, I took Geometry; the bastard who taught the class made you write a theorem out 100 times if he called on you in class and you didn't know the answer (he never got me, lol). If if I ever bet on another total in an NCAA tourney game, I'm going to write it out 100 times, "Thou shalt not bet totals.......Thou shalt not bet totals......."

        1) NCAA basketball tournament is the best sporting event of the year; it isn't close. It is always dramatic, it takes in just about the whole country (North Dakota State was in last year's event) and money can't buy you a win (Big East only has two teams left). Great entertainment-- you have to come to Las Vegas sometime for the first weekend. Its worth the trip.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Washington Wizards (+5.5, 184)

The Bobcats’ offense doesn’t look too good when Stephen Jackson isn’t hitting from long range. Charlotte has dropped its last two games and, not coincidentally, Jackson has hit just one of his 13 attempts from beyond the arc.

"I don't like settling for jump shots,'' coach Larry Brown told the Charlotte Observer following a 77-71 loss to the Heat. "That's a big problem for me, and sometimes we do it.''

Settling is one thing, but not being able to make a 3 is something else. The ‘Cats don’t have a reliable long bomber and that can sometimes get them into trouble.

The under is 7-3 in Charlotte’s last 10 games and just as successful with the Wizards. Washington hasn’t hit triple digits in a game since Feb. 26. The under is 10-2 since that overtime game against the Knicks in late February.

            Pick: Under

Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks (-10, 205)

The Clippers were everyone’s favorite play against a Kings team missing its best player, Tyreke Evans. Most bettors assumed the hosting Clippers could down the shorthanded Kings.

Well, Baron Davis and Company did what they’ve been doing all season long. They totally crapped the bed. The club finished with just as many turnovers (17) as they did assists.

Tuesday might be the perfect time to hop back on the Clipper train.

Dallas plays at New Orleans Monday night before returning home for Tuesday’s tilt with Los Angeles. And there isn’t a worst bet in the NBA than backing the Mavs on their home floor. Dallas is just 3-26-1 against the spread in its last 30 games at home.

            Pick: Clippers

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Atlanta Thrashers (+100, 5.5)

This is a must-win game for both the Boston Bruins and the Atlanta Thrashers who rank eighth and ninth in the Eastern Conference standings with only one point separating them.

The Bruins earned an important 2-1 win against the Rangers Sunday afternoon after showing little passion in a 3-0 loss to the Penguins Thursday. But more importantly, Boston showed a cohesiveness that had been lacking this season.

“We need to stick up for each other as a team and we haven’t been the best at it this year”, head coach Claude Julien told the Boston Herald referencing a few scraps in the Rangers game. “That’s a fact. Everyone knows it, including ourselves. I think the players have made a commitment to be a team and stick up for each other. And that’s what we did (Sunday).”

While the Bruins have been up and down lately, the Thrashers have won four in a row after losing six straight. Atlanta dominated its opponents in those four wins and the Bruins, without leading scorer Marc Savard, won’t have enough firepower to keep up.

                        Pick: Thrashers

                        Anaheim Ducks at Calgary Flames

The fans at the Honda Center got more than their money’s worth Sunday. Not only did they watch the Ducks defeat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2, they also witnessed Teemu Selanne’s 600th career goal.

“I was a little bit nervous that if it doesn’t happen tonight, it’s going to happen on the road”, Selanne told The Orange County Register. “It’s still fun and great. But happening at home, it’s way more special. I’m very happy about that.”

The Ducks have won their last four games after losing five in a row following the Olympic break. Their offense has been on fire, racking up four goals or more in those four wins and surpassing the total each time.

After going through a three-game offensive slump, the Calgary Flames have been finding the back of the net with regularity in their last three games. Expect each team's offense to sparkle Tuesday night.

                        Pick: Over
