Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: UConn meets Virginia Tech in the NIT, while the Pens battle the Red Wings, and the Mavericks seek a victory in New Orleans.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Dirk Nowitzki picked up 28 points and five rebounds for Dallas in that losing cause, while Jason Terry chipped in with 18 points off the bench. The Hornets (33-38 SU, 32-38-1 ATS) have lost three straight games, most recently falling 106-86 in Utah on Saturday. Also on the NBA's schedule for Monday: Orlando at Philadelphia, Miami at New Jersey, San Antonio at Oklahoma City, Toronto at Minnesota, Atlanta at Milwaukee, Houston at Chicago, Memphis at Sacramento, Phoenix at Golden State, and Boston at Utah. The Jazz (45-25 SU, 43-24-3 ATS) were led by Paul Millsap's 22 points and C.J. Miles' 17 points in their victory over the Hornets

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers: Sixers guard Louis Williams (back) is questionable.

Miami Heat at New Jersey Nets: Heat center Jermaine O'Neal (ankle) is questionable.

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets: Hornets guard Chris Paul (knee) is doubtful.

Memphis Grizzlies at Sacramento Kings: Grizzlies center Marc Gasol (neck) is questionable. Kings guard Tyreke Evans (concussion) is day-to-day.

Lines to keep an eye on

Milwaukee Bucks opened as 3.5-point favorites over Atlanta Hawks and have jumped to 4. Bucks are 13-2-1 ATS in their last 16.

Total in the Boston Celtics-Utah Jazz opened at 202 and fell to 201 at some books. Boston has played in three straight unders.

Illinois opened as a 9-point favorite over Kent State but the line has fallen to 8 at most books.

Northern Colorado was listed as a pick 'em against Pacific but is now a 1-point favorite at most books.

Missouri State opened as a 9-point favorite over Louisana Tech but that number has dropped to as low as 8 at some books.

      Who's hot

Phoenix Suns are 17-5 ATS in their last 22.

Milwaukee Bucks are 14-2 SU in their last 16.

Orlando Magic are 10-1 SU in their last 11.

San Antonio Spurs are 9-1 ATS in their last 10.

Montreal Canadiens are 7-1 in their last eight, netting 5.76 units.

      Who's not

Minnesota Timberwolves are 1-17 SU in their last 18.

New Jersey Nets are 1-10 SU in their last 11.

Chicago Bulls are 1-10 SU in their last 11.

New Orleans Hornets are 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12.

Philadelphia 76ers are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS in their last eight.

Ottawa Senators are 1-8 in their last nine.

      Key stat

38.5 - Total number of points covered by Cornell in its first two NCAA Tournament games. The 12th-seeded Big Red beat fifth-seeded Temple 78-65 on Thursday as 3-point underdogs, then ripped fourth-seeded Wisconsin 87-69 on Sunday as 4.5-point pups.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans went from possibly missing the rest of the season to possibly not missing a single game after X-rays were negative for a broken jaw. Evans took an elbow to the face from Ersan Ilyasova in Friday's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks and suffered a slight concussion, a chipped tooth and a gum laceration, but there is a chance he will suit up tonight to face the Grizzlies. Evans, who is averaging 20. 4 points per game, will be evaluated Monday.

      Game of the day

      Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks

      Notable quotable

"I told our team when we were up four (points), up six, whatever it was, we were going to win this game and it's going to be one of the greatest wins in the history of Michigan State."

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said Sunday after the Spartans beat Maryland 85-83 on Korie Lucious' 3-pointer at the buzzer to advance to the Sweet 16.

      Tips and notes

The Toronto Raptors are on a much-needed road trip after being blown out by Oklahoma City and then booed out by their home fans on Friday. They got the easiest road trip a struggling team could ask for - at New Jersey, which they defeated 100-90 on Saturday, and at Minnesota, which has lost 12 in a row. The Raptors are 10-0 SU and 9-1 ATS in their last 10 against the T'wolves.

The L.A. Kings' front-line trio of Ryan Smyth, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams have finally been reunited after a injury-plagued season. They played only nine games together before Williams went out with an upper-body injury, then eight more before Smyth went down with a broken leg, scoring 23 goals and 36 assists in their 17 games together. Now reunited again, it's only a matter of time before they start playing like one of the league's premiere front lines again.

The price of betting on NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson just went up after Sunday's win at Bristol Motor Speedway, previously considered a weak spot for the four-time defending Sprint Cup champion. For all his accomplishments, short tracks like Bristol have been his Achilles heal. Fortunately for him, there are few on the circuit, but NASCAR rolls to another one this week at Martinsville Speedway. With his short-track woes in his rearview mirror, look out ahead for Johnson.

        Monday six-pack

-- Bad news and good news for Twins Sunday; they lost Joe Nathan for the season- he's going to have an arm operation.

-- Good news is that Joe Mauer signed an eight-year, $184M contract, so now they have to find another position (DH)?) for him so he lasts as long as possible as a superior hitter. Catchers' careers don't last as long.

-- Teemu Selanne became 18th NHL player with 600 goals Sunday.

-- Overtime rules are going to be discussed at NFL meetings this week.

-- Seahawks gave up a 3rd-round pick for Charger 3rd-string QB Charlie Whitehurst, who played at Clemson, but has yet to throw NFL pass.

-- Health Care Reform passed 219-212 Sunday night; guy in sportsbook was heard to say, "Figures, I had the Republicans +6.5.".

        *********************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a full week of fun.........

        13) The last night in Vegas is like when you were a kid, the last night of summer vacation; tomorrow is a full day of travel, then back into a normal routine. If you like basketball and you like fun, coming here for a weekend of March Madness is something you should treat yourself to.

        12) West Virginia, the team without a true point guard, only turned it over 10 times Sunday in a 68-59 win over cold-shooting Missouri.

        11) All five Big 11 teams played Friday/Sunday this weekend; not sure why, probably just a coincidence, but it was unusual.

        10) Stunning how easily Cornell beat Wisconsin; wasn't even close. This weekend, Big Red plays in Syracuse, not far from their Ithaca campus, so Kentucky is going to have a road game of sorts, against team with lot of players a decent amount older than Kentucky's starters.

        9) Have to give Jay Bilas credit; he said Cornell is going to Elite 8 on the selection shows last Sunday, and he widely scoffed at/abused for having that opinion. Well, so far he looks like the smartest guy in the room.

        8) The last 0:20 of Michigan-Maryland saw three lead-changing baskets scored with no timeouts in between, rare in this era; tremendous action-- thats the good news for Sparty. Horrible news is that it looks like Kalin Lucas has a torn achilles tendon and is done for this tournament.

        7) Xavier avenged LY's loss to Pitt in NCAAs, but seven of the starters and one of the coaches from LY's game are gone, so not really a revenge situation as you might think. Xavier-K-State will be fun Thursday.

        6) Everybody who had St Mary's-Baylor in their brackets for this week raise your hand. Hands up indicate the liars in the room.

        5) Syracuse actually has to get on a plane and travel this week; no driving on the NY State Thruway for home games. Butler's shooters will pose an interesting dilemma for the Orange 2-3 zone.

        4) Kansas State's Jacob Pullen mght be the most underrated player in the country; he torched K-State's two opponents this weekend.

        3) Wasn't expecting Chris Kramer to go to hoop and score winning basket for Purdue, which was down 40-29 in second half. Gutty weekend for the Boilermakers, who trailed 37-11 at half in their last pre-tournament game. Duke gets injury-riddled Purdue next-- quite a fortunate draw for Duke-- Texas Aggies would've been much more formidable opponent.

        2) 11 different conferences are represented in the Sweet Sixteen.

        1) Cornell-Kentucky in the Carrier Dome? Good theater, for sure. Dome setting might hurt Big Red's outside bombers.

Game of the day: Hawks at Bucks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks (-4, 189.5)

If the season ended today these two teams would meet in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The sizzling Bucks return home after a three-game road trip where they beat Denver and Sacramento. At 44-23-1 ATS on the season, the Bucks have been a cash cow for their faithful this season.

            Who needs sleep?

The Bucks’ win at Denver on Saturday was all the more impressive considering they didn’t even get into their hotel rooms the night before until 3 a.m.

Denver guard Chauncey Billups gives all the credit to Bucks coach Scott Skiles.

“(Milwaukee’s) one of the worst teams you can play in the regular season,” Billups said. “Skiles has them playing hard, diving on loose balls, it doesn’t matter if they played (the night) before or not. In my times playing against his teams, I just respect him a lot because he just gets his teams playing hard every single night.”

Denver had won seven straight at home.

            Johnson comes up big

Joe Johnson returned to the Hawks’ lineup on Friday after missing two games with Achilles tendinitis. He scored 18 points in Atlanta’s overtime win including the game-winner at the buzzer.

Maybe a little rusty, Johnson missed his first nine shots of the game but scored seven of Atlanta’s nine points in the extra period and canned the game-winner in the teeth of three defenders.

"Joe's a pro," Hawks coach Mike Woodson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He's an All-Star. You expect him to make shots when it counts."

            Fear the Deer

Milwaukee’s slogan is based on a fierce defense. The Bucks have won eight of their last nine games overall and continually climbed the Eastern Conference standings in the process.

Milwaukee is eighth in the NBA in scoring defense and the under is 7-2 in its last nine games.

Redd leaves them in the black

When Michael Redd suffered a season-ending knee injury in January, some thought the Bucks, already in the midst of a three-year playoff drought, were in deep trouble.

Maybe the oddsmakers made too much out of it since Milwaukee is 26-7-1 ATS without its former All-Star shooting guard. Then again, that’s when Brandon Jennings truly emerged. He scored 35 against Sacramento two games ago then had just nine against Denver and the Bucks still won.

But give the Bucks’ front office a lot of credit for this team’s surge.

They made the trade of the year when they acquired John Salmons from the Bulls. Since the deal, Milwaukee is 14-2, the best mark in the NBA and Salmons is averaging nearly 20 points per game.

            Last meeting

These teams have met just once this season with Atlanta winning 106-102 in overtime. The Hawks were an 8.5-point favorite in the game and did not cover. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith combined for 46 points in the game. John Salmons had 32 points in the loss.

The total was 189 and needed the overtime session to go over the number.

The Bucks shot 50 percent in the first three quarters but when the game was on the line Atlanta’s defense held them to 6 of 17 from the field in the fourth quarter.

Atlanta trailed by seven in the fourth quarter and by five points in overtime but still pulled it out.

            Trend-setting

The favorite is 8-2-1 ATS in last 11 games in the series and the home team is 7-3-1 against the spread in that span. The over is 6-0 in the last six meetings between these two teams.

The Bucks are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games playing a game with a day of rest.

The under is 5-0 in the last five Bucks home games.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Utah Jazz (-4, 202)

A Western road trip might have been just what the doctor ordered for the aging Celtics, or at least what coach Doc Rivers ordered.

After a ho-hum 3-3 stretch on the right side of the country, the Celtics have posted a pair of impressive victories over Dallas and Houston on their current swing through the left.

"Crowd noise? I mean, half of them are deaf, they’re so old, right?" Rivers told the Boston Globe. "So they can’t hear it anyway, so maybe that’s an advantage."

Paul Pierce is coming off a 29-point performance against the Mavs and Ray Allen and Rajon Rando scored 21 and 20, respectively.

Now the senior-citizen Celtics roll into Salt Lake City, where the Jazz are a cozy 21-6-2 ATS in their last 29 at home.

But they are dealing with injuries to Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur, who are questionable for tonight's game, while the Celts are healthy for the first time in ages.

              Pick: Celtics

Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers (N/A)

The red-hot Orlando Magic, winners of 10 of their last 11, might have had time to cool off during their rare three-day rest, but don't count on it.

Three times this season the Magic have enjoyed a 72-hour respite and they are 3-0 ATS in the ensuing games, winning by an average margin of 21 points per game.

On the other hand, the Sixers are playing their sixth game in eight days, going 1-4 ATS during that span, and point guard Louis Williams is coping with back spasms.

The line and total are off the board for that reason, but there aren't enough points to swing this one the other way.

              Pick: Magic

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (-140, 5.5)

The Penguins are starting to use the “C” word these days. After an overtime loss to Carolina, Pens coach Dan Bylsma shared it with the media.

"Consistency has been an issue we've talked about, and the challenge as a team (is to discover) what you're good at, what you need to improve on and areas you can get better at," Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. "That is an area we have need to improve on - that we've not been good at and need to get better at."

Pittsburgh has been up and down since returning from the Olympic break. The defending champs won their first four following the stoppage but lost four of their last six afterwards.

No one should envy Bylsma’s task. He’s trying to motivate a group that won the Cup a year ago as a four-seed. Pittsburgh has just 10 games left and is pretty much assured a top-four placing.

The Wings, on the other hand, don’t have anything to feel secure about. They’re in tough to lock down the final playoff spot in the West and are playing quality hockey.

                            Pick: Wings

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens (-140, 5.5)

The Habs’ six-game winning streak came to an end Saturday at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Losing to their hated rival and Eastern Conference bottom feeder wasn’t all bad though.

Montreal welcomed winger Mike Cammalleri back to practice for the first time in almost seven weeks. The team’s leading goal-scorer has been recovering from a banged up knee and could rejoin the active roster any day now.

Things aren’t as sunny in the Canadian capital city these days. The Senators are 1-8 over their last nine games and have given up four or more goals in each of their last four games.

“When you score four goals on the road against a very good defensive team, it should be enough for a win,” Sens coach Cory Clouston said following a 5-4 loss to the Stars on Friday.

Clouston is having difficulties with his goaltenders and that's never a good sign for a team on a losing streak.

                            Pick: Over
