    Sunday's Early Action

Friday’s battles in the NCAA Tournament were mostly anticlimactic when compared with the opening day showdowns. That boring second day of action helps the early games of Sunday’s card offer up quality matchups between teams from the power conferences and everyone’s favorite mid-major program. Let’s see how they stack up.

    Gonzaga (8) vs. Syracuse (1) – 12:10 p.m. EDT

Las Vegas Sports Consultants initially opened Syracuse (29-4 straight up, 20-9 against the spread) as a 3 ½-point favorite with a total of 117. As of Saturday afternoon, the Orange were 7 ½-point faves with the total bolting up to 150. Gamblers can take the Bulldogs to move onto Salt Lake City for a plus-270 return (risk $100 to win $270).

Gonzaga (27-6 SU, 16-12-1 ATS) almost squandered an 18-point lead before finally putting away the Seminoles 67-60 as a one-point underdog on Friday night. The Zags actually allowed Florida State to find its way to the free thrown line five times in the final four minutes of the game, when they were only up 55-50. Luckily for the Bulldogs, the ‘Noles only hit two of those shots. Matt Bouldin helped Gonzaga move on with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Orange looked like they were playing some street ball against Vermont at the start of their first round contest, surging out to a 35-10 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Syracuse called off the dogs for the most part in the second half, but still came away with a dominating 79-56 victory as a 15 ½-point “chalk.” Wes Johnson led the ‘Cuse with 18 points, six boards and had three helpers.

Jim Boeheim’s club has been a single-digit favorite 12 times this season. In those games, they’ve gone 9-3 SU and 8-4 ATS with the ‘under’ going 6-5-1.

Bettors have enjoyed great success when the Bulldogs have been listed as underdogs, evidenced by a 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS mark for the season. The totals have gone just 3-3 in those matches.

The ‘over’ is 12-10-2 for the Zags this season. However, the ‘under’ has hit in three straight and eight of their last 11 games with a number on the board.

Syracuse has seen the ‘under’ go 13-10-1 this season, but the ‘over’ is 5-1-1 in its last seven games.

The winner of this contest will go on to face either Butler or Murray State in the Sweet Sixteen.

    Georgia Tech (10) vs. Ohio State (2) – 2:20 p.m. EDT

LVSC posted the Buckeyes as five-point favorites with a total of 138. Ohio State (28-7 SU, 18-14 ATS) has since been pushed up to a 7 ½-point favorite with a total of 133 ½. The Yellow Jackets can be had on the money line at plus-240 (risk $100 to win $240).

Georgia Tech (23-12 SU, 16-12-1 ATS) moved onto the second round after taking everything the Cowboys could give them in a 10/7 contest. When all was said and done, the Yellow Jackets advanced in a 64-59 victory as 1 ½-point pups. GT was almost automatic from the charity stripe, draining 24-of-25 free throws. Folks backing Oklahoma State weren’t expecting to see that since the Ramblin’ Wreck is shooting 64 percent at the free throw line for the whole season. Derrick Favors was the main cog in the Jackets’ offense with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Bucks had no problems in dispatching Cal-Santa Barbara in a 68-51 win in Milwaukee. Ohio State wasn’t able to cover as a 17 ½-point favorite. That could have been because Evan Turner had just nine points on 2-for-13 shooting – one of the worst nights from the field from the Buckeyes’ best player. Luckily for OSU, Jon Diebler was on target with 23 points, 21 of those points coming from downtown.

The Yellow Jackets are 4-7 SU when posted as single-digit underdogs this season, but 7-4 ATS in those contests. The ‘under’ has gone 7-3 as well.

Ohio State has gone just 2-3 SU and ATS in five games against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference since 2007. The ‘over’ is a stellar 4-1 in that stretch.

Georgia Tech has won and covered the spread in its last two meetings with the Buckeyes. However, the Jackets were favored in both of those meetings. The ‘under’ cashed in those spots to boot.

The Bobcats or Volunteers await the survivor of this contest.

    Michigan State (5) vs. Maryland (4) – 2:30 p.m. EDT

LVSC opened Maryland (24-8 SU, 18-10 ATS) as a one-point favorite with a total of 146. As of Saturday afternoon, the total has shifted down to 143. You can pull in even-money if you decide to back the Spartans on the money line.

Michigan State (25-8 SU, 12-19 ATS) needed a big night from its biggest star to get past the Aggies 70-67 as a 13-point favorite in a 4/12 showdown. Kalin Lucas dropped in a career high 25 points. The Spartans were able to close the deal by hitting 70 percent from the free throw line, which included an extra shot due to New Mexico State’s Troy Gillenwater’s lane violation late in the game. That foul pushed the lead to three and force the Aggies into a desperation shot with .3 seconds on the clock.

The Terrapins had their hands full with the nation’s top scorer in an 89-77 win over Houston as 9 ½-point favorites. Greivis Vasquez came through with 16 points, but freshman Jordan Williams was their top performer with 21 points and 17 rebounds.

Maryland has faced off with 12 teams that made the NCAA Tournament. In those games, the Terps are 6-6 SU and ATS. Yet they are 3-1 ATS in the last four games against qualifiers. The ‘over’ has gone 9-3 in those tilts.

The Spartans have been single-digit underdogs five times this season; they were 2-3 SU and ATS with the ‘under going 3-2.

Either Northern Iowa or Kansas will be awaiting the winner of this contest at the Edward Jones Dome next week.

    Missouri (10) vs. West Virginia (2) – 2:40 p.m. EDT

LVSC initially opened up with the Mountaineers as six-point favorites with a total of 138. Most sportsbooks have pushed them down to 5 ½-point faves with the total going to 137 ½. Missouri (23-10 SU, 15-12 ATS) can be backed for a healthy plus-200 return (risk $100 to win $200).

The Tigers advanced to the second round after a comfortable 86-78 win over Clemson as 1 ½-point ‘dogs last Friday. Mizzou had the ACC’s Tigers on their heels for most of the game, running up and down the court. They hit 52 percent of its shots and committed just nine turnovers. Keith Ramsey led Missouri to the next round with 20 points, eight boards and four helpers.

West Virginia (28-6 SU, 14-19 ATS) looked like they were going to carry on the shoddy play of the Big East in this tourney after trailing 10-0 to the Bears on Friday afternoon. The ‘Neers picked themselves up with plenty of time in the first half to cruise to a 77-50 trouncing of Morgan State as 17-point favorites. Devin Ebanks secured a double-double with his 16 points and 13 boards. Da’Sean Butler was off of his game, scoring just nine points but had five steals.

Mizzou has only been an underdog six times this year. And the Tigers have gone 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS in that situation. In fact, that lone win came for Mike Anderson’s crew last Friday against Clemson. Totals bettors will note that the ‘under’ has gone 4-2 for Missouri when posted as a pup.

The Mountaineers have gone 12-5 SU and 7-10 ATS in the 17 tests they were in as single-digit faves. The ‘over’ achieved a 9-7-1 mark in that moment.

The survivor of this contest will take on either Washington or New Mexico in the regional semifinals.

      Sunday's Late Action

The field of 65 has been reduced to just 24 going into Sunday’s play. Eight more teams will get sent home, while eight more will qualify for the Sweet 16. Let’s get you ready for another day of bets and ballgames.

      **Cornell vs. Wisconsin**

--This is a 4/12 matchup between the Ivy League champs and one of the premier programs from out of the Big Ten. Tip-off in Jacksonville at Veterans Memorial Arena is slated for 2:50 p.m. Eastern.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Wisconsin (24-8 straight up, 17-13 against the spread) as a 3 ½-point favorite with a total of 117. As of early Saturday night, most books had the Badgers favored by 4 ½ with the total in the 120-121 range. Bettors can take the Big Red to win outright for a plus-170 payout.

--Bo Ryan’s squad was fortunate to dodge the upset attempt of 13th-seeded Wofford on Thursday. The Terrier were an abysmal 6-of-13 from the free-throw line, which essentially cost them the game in a 53-49 loss. Nevertheless, gamblers backing Wofford cashed winners while catching 10 ½ points. Jon Leuer paced the Badgers with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Trevon Hughes added 19 points.

--Cornell (28-4 SU, 17-10 ATS) advanced to the second round by pounding fifth-seeded Temple by a 78-65 count as a three-point underdog. Louis Dale, one of the country’s most underrated point guards, led the way with 21 points and seven assists. Ryan Wittman added 20 points even though he only got 10 shots. Wittman, the son of Randy, the former Indiana star who had a catch-and-shoot jumper that was as smooth as Tupelo Honey, buried 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range to shoot down the Owls.

--Wittman averages a team-high 17.5 points per game, shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc. Dale averages 11.9 PPG and dishes out a team-high 4.8 assists per game. Jeff Foote, the team’s 7-foot senior center, averages 12.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Foote also averages 1.9 blocked shots per contest.

--Steve Donahue’s team is an underdog in this spot for the seventh time this season. The Big Red have previously posted a 5-1 spread record in six ‘dog situations. They have now faced four teams in the NCAA field, going 2-2 SU and 3-1 versus the number. CU has wins over Temple and Vermont, but it lost at Syracuse (88-73) and at Kansas (71-66).

--Wisconsin is one of the best coached teams in America. The Badgers play hard-nosed defense, are fundamentally sound at both ends and rarely take poor shots. They are led by senior guard Hughes, who averages a team-high 15.5 PPG and 1.7 steals per contest. Jason Bohannon is a lights-out perimeter shooter who shares the backcourt with Hughes. Bohannon averages 12.0 PPG and drains 3-balls at a 40-percent clip. He dropped a career-high 30 points on Indiana earlier this year.

--Wisconsin owns a 6-7 spread record in 13 games as a single-digit favorite.

--The ‘under’ is 12-9 overall for Cornell.

--The ‘under’ has been a huge money maker in Wisconsin games, cashing at a 19-10 overall clip this season. Dating back to last year, the ‘under’ is 27-11 in the Badgers’ last 38 games.

      **Xavier vs. Pittsburgh**

--LVSC opened third-seeded Pittsburgh (25-8 SU, 17-11-2 ATS) as a 2 ½-point favorite with a total of 135. As of early Saturday night, most books were listing the Panthers as one-point favorites with the total in the 135-136 range.

--Xavier (25-8 SU, 21-11 ATS) broke open a tight game midway through the second half and pulled away for a 65-54 win over Minnesota in a pick ‘em affair. Jordan Crawford dominated for the Muskateers, finishing with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Jamel McLean added seven points and 14 boards.

--Jamie Dixon did one of the best coaching jobs in the country this year. After going to the Elite Eight and losing four key players last year, Pitt is back in the Round of 32 in what some believed would be a rebuilding year for the Panthers. They advanced to the second round by stroking 14th-seeded Oakland 89-66 Friday as 9 ½-point favorites. Jermaine Dixon led four starters in double figures with 17 points, five rebounds and five steals.

--Chris Mackey’s team will be looking to avenge last season’s gut-wrenching loss to Pitt in Boston at the Sweet 16. Xavier led the Panthers by eight at intermission and by two with 1:49 remaining, but LeVance Fields took over down the stretch, draining the go-ahead 3-pointer and then getting a crucial steal at the defensive end. Nevertheless, the Muskateers took the money as 6 ½-point underdogs in the 60-55 loss.

--The ‘over’ is a lucrative 20-11 overall for Xavier.

--Totals have been a wash for Pitt, going 13-13 overall.

--I called Xavier as my sleeper in this Tournament and actually predicted that it will make the Final Four. I stand by the assertion and obviously like the Muskateers a bunch in this spot.

--Tip-off at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee is scheduled for 4:50 p.m. Eastern.

      **Texas A&M vs. Purdue**

--LVSC opened this 4/5 showdown in Spokane as a pick ‘em with a total of 126 ½. As of early Saturday night, most spots had Texas A&M (24-9 SU, 19-10 ATS) listed as the 1 ½-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 125 ½.

--Purdue (28-5 SU, 13-18-2 ATS) had been counted out by most pundits coming into the NCAA Tournament. The reason was obviously the loss of junior forward Robbie Hummel, arguably the team’s best player who went down with a torn ACL several weeks ago. However, the Boilermakers were impressive in the first round, sending Siena home by capturing a 72-64 win as 4 ½-point favorites.

--JaJuan Johnson was the catalyst against the Saints, producing 23 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots. E’Twaun Moore added 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

--Mark Turgeon’s squad advanced to the second round by taking out Utah St. 69-53 as a 2 ½-point favorite. Khris Middleton scored a team-high 19 points for the Aggies, who are an incredible 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games.

--Purdue has been an underdog twice this year, cashing tickets both times. Meanwhile, the Aggies are 9-3 ATS in their 12 games as single-digit favorites.

--The ‘under’ is 17-11 overall for Texas A&M.

--Totals have been a wash for Purdue (15-15), but the ‘under’ is on a 7-3 run in the Boilers’ last 10 games.

      **Duke vs. California**

--Most books are listing top-seeded Duke (30-5 SU, 19-13-2 ATS) as a six-point favorite with a total of 143. Bettors can back the Bears on the money line for a plus-215 return (risk $100 to win $215).

--California (24-10 SU, 20-13 ATS) was one of the more impressive teams in the first round, trouncing Louisville 77-62 as a one-point favorite. Theo Robertson and Jerome Randle both scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds.

--Duke took care of Arkansas Pine-Bluff early and often in their first round meeting, cruising to a 73-44 triumph as a 24 ½-point favorite. Kyle Singler went off for 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Jon Scheyer chipped in 13 points.

--Mike Montgomery’s team has been cashing tickets galore, compiling a 10-2 spread record in its last 12 games. However, as underdogs this year, the Bears are 1-5 both SU and ATS.

--Duke owns a 6-6-1 spread record in 13 games as a single-digit ‘chalk.’

--The ‘over’ is 17-14-1 overall for Cal, 3-1 in its last four games.

--The ‘under’ is 20-14 overall for Duke, 7-2 in its last nine games.

--This game will be played in Jacksonville and come off the board 30 minutes after the conclusion of Cornell-Wisconsin.

        NCAA Round 2 Sunday Starters

By now your sleep pattern showed be seriously disrupted, waking yourself up screaming, “onions” from a Bill Raftery call or the occasional Dick Enberg “oh my” as the brain can’t properly rest with the constant rhythm of a basketball pounding the hardwood for hours on end. Additionally, in the other regions of the brain, you are going over why you bet a certain team or why you didn’t have the “onions” to take one you know you should have. Don’t despair, roughly one more eight hour segment to go before you can rest up, with five games coming in the early afternoon or late morning depending on your proximity.

        Gonzaga vs. Syracuse 12:10E

The Orangemen answered one question; can they play without injured center Arinze Onuaku? The answer was yes, but Vermont doesn’t have anywhere near the talent level Gonzaga (27-6, 16-11-2 ATS) has. Even if Onuaku could go, he’ll have limitations as to what he can do, which means Wesley Johnson and Andy Rautins will have to carry the scoring load, with others like Scoop Jackson and Rick Jackson chipping in. Syracuse (29-4, 20-9 ATS) is a 7.5-point favorite at Sportsbook.com and is a 9-2 ATS after allowing 25 points or less in the first half last game.

The Bulldogs ended up drawing two phenomenal defensive teams in the early rounds of the West regional, but at least the ‘Cuse likes to get out and run, more to Gonzaga’s liking. The Zags were exquisite in the first half against Florida State, building a 16-point lead, however fell into the Seminoles trap of slow down and needed always reliable Matt Bouldin to bail them out. With the total listed at 150, Gonzaga can play their more free-flowing style, but to win have to solve Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone. Gonzaga is 26-12 ATS as a neutral court underdog or pick.

1 vs. 8 seeds are 37-9 SU, winning by 9.3 points per game the last 25 years.

Georgia Tech vs. Ohio State 2:20E

As was documented yesterday, 10-seeds oft times present problems for No. 2 seeds, winning outright about 40 percent of the time. Georgia Tech (23-12, 16-12-1 ATS) was the sixth ACC team seeded 10th or worse since 1994 (out of seven), to pull off the upset in the first round. The Yellow Jackets have the athletes and inside power to make them a factor in any contest, however they must play at their own pace since they are 16-6 ATS when they attempt 54 to 62 shots. That means a large number of touches for Gani Lawal and freshman Derrick Favors.

Ohio State (28-7, 17-16-2 ATS) is more diverse offensively than Warren Buffet’s portfolio, making them a headache to defend. Everyone knows what Evan Turner can do, but when Jon Diebler hits seven of the purest three-pointers you have ever seen and defenses start leaning his way, that opens up William Buford and David Lighty to expand their games. The Buckeyes are a 6.5-point pick with total of 133 and they are 8-2 ATS playing against a team that wins 60% to 80% of their games this season.
The Yellow Jackets are 8-0 UNDER on a neutral court when the total is 130 to 139.5.

        Michigan State vs. Maryland 2:30E

Round Two on Sunday resembles a Big Ten meet with four teams in action. The conference was believed to be improved this year and this is a swing game that will help determine if that belief was actually true. Michigan State (25-8, 12-20 ATS) got off a good start against New Mexico State, building a 13-point lead before seeing it all disappear to the more aggressive Aggies in the second half. The Spartans were overwhelmed by New Mexico State’s faster tempo and would have lost except for the Aggies impatience in late game shot selection and 13-22 mark from the free throw line. Coach Gary Williams more experienced team is unlikely to waste that opportunity if they reach that point and Michigan State is 5-15 ATS facing a club with a winning record this season.

Maryland’s (24-8, 17-10 ATS) win over Houston was workman-like, taking the Cougars best shots, while maintaining control. There's no question the Terrapins' success revolves around senior guard Greivis Vasquez, whose game has matured to the level of doing what it takes to win, instead of making sure his numbers are in order. Maryland will undoubtedly use full court or three quarter pressure on the Spartans earlier in the game to determine who they react. The Terps are 8-1 ATS in road conditions after playing consecutive games as a favorite and is 10-2 and 9-3 ATS in last dozen outings.

Maryland is a one-point favorite; however four seeds are 11-23 ATS since 1998.

        Missouri vs. West Virginia 2:40E

Can Missouri (23-10, 15-12 ATS) ring the bell as an upset winner? If they bring the same intensity they played with Friday in beating Clemson they just might. The Tigers 75-60 loss to Nebraska in first Big 12 tourney contest had coach Mike Anderson thinking October, not March. The very next practice was a return to basics, including all the conditioning drills the players hate, but they got the message. Against Clemson they had 15 steals and 20 forced turnovers, which led directly to 20 points in 86-78 triumph. “Our teams typically start playing some of their better basketball right around late February, March,’’ said coach Anderson. “I guess we really turned up the intensity…” The Tigers are 15-4 ATS versus ball handling teams committing 12 or fewer turnovers a contest.

West Virginia (28-6, 14-19 ATS) hit the snooze button to start against Morgan State down 10-0, but were alarmed into reality by the soothing tones of coach Bob Huggins and buried the Bears the rest of the first half 38-17 on the way to 27-point win. The Mountaineers will have to show patience on offense in attacking Missouri and take advantage of opportunities once they break the press. West Virginia can’t become flustered either when Mizzou goes on 6-0 or 8-2 runs, that just their style. The ‘Teers are 5.5-point favorites and are 13-2 ATS in a NCAA tournament games since 1997.

        Cornell vs. Wisconsin 2:50E

The Big Red of Cornell (28-4, 17-10 ATS) ended the Ivy’s league’s 12-year drought of empty NCAA trips with a resounding performance against A-10 champion Temple. "Everyone was saying we were Cinderella or it's an upset. Not us," sophomore Chris Wroblewski said Friday after his toppled Temple 78-65 as three-point underdogs. Cornell spent the first half pushing the ball inside and once the Owls were forced to sag lower, the nation’s top three point shooting team unleashed the hounds and total nine 3-pointers. The team from Ithaca, NY is 10-1 ATS after playing a game as an underdog.

Wisconsin (24-8, 17-13 ATS) played average at best in holding off Wofford 53-49, nevertheless the Badgers showed their most important trait when it mattered most, poise. Wisconsin lost every bit of their early 10-point second half lead, but played solid defense in the closing minutes and made big shots to emerge victorious. The Badgers are reliable three-point defensive team and they will need to deliver. Wisky is a four-point favorite and 8-1 ATS if opposing squad has win percentage of 80 percent or better.

The tournament has shown that 4-seeds taking on 12-seeds in this round win by four points a game, the same as oddsmakers number.

Top-seeded Syracuse and Gonzaga clash in West Region

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - The first-ever meeting between powers from opposite coasts takes place this afternoon at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York as the Gonzaga Bulldogs clash with the Syracuse Orange in the second round of the 72nd annual NCAA Tournament.

The top seed in the West Regional, Syracuse will be heading to Salt Lake City if the team wins today for Sweet 16 action. Head coach Jim Boeheim, who guided the Orange to the national championship in 2003, won his 43rd NCAA Tournament outing on Friday with a 79-56 victory against Vermont, the same Vermont that stunned Syracuse in the first round of the tourney only a few years ago.

Boeheim, who is now eighth on the all-time wins list in NCAA Tournament history, has directed his program to seven wins in eight tries against nationally-ranked programs this season and now has his squad showing a tremendous 51-32 record in the tournament over the years.

As for the eighth-seeded Bulldogs, they are aiming to repeat the effort displayed by fellow West Coast Conference member Saint Mary's, with the 10th- seeded Gaels having knocked off second-seeded Villanova yesterday in the second round. The Zags, losers to SMC in the West Coast Conference Tournament title game, are in this tournament for the 12th straight year and the 13th time overall and are showing a 15-12 record after dismissing Florida State in the first round two days ago, 67-60.

With 12 straight showings in this event the Bulldogs are tied with Texas and Wisconsin for fourth on the active list, trailing only Kansas, Duke and Michigan State.

The winner of today's meeting will be back in action on Thursday at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City against fifth-seeded Butler.

Even though Florida State had the top field-goal shooting defense in the nation heading into first-round action, it was Gonzaga that clamped down on the Seminoles as the squad held FSU to just 35.6 percent from the floor in the seven-point decision. Matt Bouldin led four starters in double figures with his 17 points, adding eight rebounds, while Steven Gray chipped in 15 points and seven boards of his own. Giving the squad a huge lift early in the encounter was Robert Sacre who eventually finished with 13 points and a game- high nine rebounds, followed by Elias Harris who also dropped in 13 points for a team that shot an even 50 percent from the floor. Bouldin, another in a long line of Bulldogs named the WCC Player of the Year, leads the team with his 15.8 ppg and 129 assists and is also responsible for close to five rebounds per game which makes him one of the more accomplished all-around performers in the tournament. Harris (14.7 ppg), who has made good on 46 percent of his three-point tries this season, is also the top man on the glass for the Zags with his 7.1 rpg as the team beats the opposition in the paint by five rebounds per game at the moment.

Without the services of center Arinze Onuaku, who again is listed as being out for today's game with a right quadriceps injury, the Orange had little trouble taking care of Vermont in the paint on Friday with a 40-29 advantage on the glass in the 23-point win. Wes Johnson, the Big East Conference Player of the Year, finished with a team-best 18 points, adding six boards, three assists and three steals, while Scoop Jardine came off the bench to register 14 points in 23 minutes of action. Rick Jackson made his presence known with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while Andy Rautins filled out his stat line with 11 points, eight boards and a team-best six assists. Brandon Triche tacked on 10 points, thanks to a trio of three pointers. Johnson leads a list of four active players scoring in double figures for the Orange with his 16.0 ppg, adding almost eight and a half rebounds per game while he makes good on an even 40 percent of his three-point tries. Rautins has been the most productive perimeter shooter with his 89 triples this year, leading to his modest 11.7 ppg, while doling out a team-best 165 assists.

Upset-minded Big Red sets sights on Badgers

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - The 12th-seeded Cornell Big Red earned the first NCAA Tournament win in program history two days ago, and they will attempt to upset the fourth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers in the second round of the East Regional.

The winner of this game will do battle with top-seeded Kentucky in the Sweet 16.

Cornell was far superior to fifth-seeded Temple in Friday's 78-65 triumph. The Big Red are now 28-4 overall and cruised to the Ivy League title. They have tied a record set by the 1970-71 Penn Quakers for most wins in a season by an Ivy squad (28) and can obviously claim sole possession of the record today. Cornell is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and had an 0-5 record in the event prior to the triumph over Temple.

As for Wisconsin, it is making its 16th appearance in this event and owns a 21-14 record. The program advanced to the Final Four in 1941 and 2000 and won its only national title in '41. The Badgers have been to the NCAA Tournament in each of head coach Bo Ryan's nine seasons with the team and in 12 straight years overall. They are 24-8 this season and are coming off a 53-49 victory over 13th-seeded Wofford, a first-round game that was closer than expected.

This game marks the first-ever meeting between Cornell and Wisconsin on the hardwood.

There are several obvious reasons that Cornell was able to get by Temple so easily on Friday. The Big Red connected on 56.3 percent of their field goal attempts and knocked down nine three-pointers. They also earned a 30-20 rebounding advantage and a 15-6 edge in points from the foul line. Louis Dale scored 21 points and handed out seven assists to lead the charge against the Owls. Ryan Wittman, the Ivy League Player of the Year, was close behind with 20 points on the strength of a 4-of-6 effort from three-point range, and Jeff Foote provided 16 points and seven boards from his center position. Overall this season, Cornell is scoring 75.4 ppg and is shooting a staggering 43.2 percent from behind the arc as a team, the best mark in the nation. The club is limiting opponents to 63.2 ppg on 41.6 percent field goal efficiency. Wittman paces his club with 17.6 ppg, while both Foote (12.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Dale (12.2 ppg, 141 assists) are consistent contributors as well.

Wisconsin struggled mightily at the offensive end of the floor against Wofford in the first round, shooting a mere 37 percent, including 1-of-9 from three- point range. The Badgers were also outrebounded by a 37-30 margin, but they did earn a 12-6 edge in points from the foul line and only turned the ball over four times. Jon Leuer and Trevon Hughes combined to score 39 of Wisconsin's 53 points. Leuer finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Hughes tallied 19 points. The key to the Badgers' success this season has been their strong defensive play, as they have limited their foes to 56 ppg on 41.8 percent shooting from the field. Offensively, they are netting 67.0 ppg and have four double-digit scorers in the fold. Hughes leads the team with 15.5 ppg, and he has 55 steals to his credit as well. Leuer is close behind with 15.0 ppg, and his 5.9 rpg are actually tops on the roster. Jason Bohannon (11.4 ppg) and Keaton Nankivil (10.1 ppg) round out a foursome of double-digit scorers

Mountaineers attempt to tame Tigers in East Regional matchup

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - The second-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers and the 10th-seeded Missouri Tigers will collide in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon.

The winner of this East Regional matchup will advance to the Sweet 16 to do battle with 11th-seeded Washington.

Missouri outplayed seventh-seeded Clemson in the second half of Friday's first-round game, and the result was an 86-78 victory. This marks the 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance for Missouri, which owns a 22-22 record at the event. Last season, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight, and the fact that they have returned to the Big Dance despite losing three 1,000-point scorers from that squad is a credit to head coach Mike Anderson and his staff. Overall, Missouri is 23-10 and finished 10-6 versus Big 12 Conference opposition during the regular season.

As for West Virginia, it overcame a slow start to crush 15th-seeded Morgan State by a 77-50 final. WVU is making its 23rd appearance in the Big Dance and third straight under head coach Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers, who are 28-6 overall, won the Big East Tournament title and had a resume' that was certainly worthy of No. 1 seed consideration, so Huggins didn't attempt to conceal the fact that he was disappointed with the No. 2 seed. The club finished sixth in the final regular-season poll, the best finish for the program since placing fifth in 1960. WVU is 21-22 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

Missouri won its only previous meeting with West Virginia by an 89-78 final in 1992.

On Friday, Missouri played tremendous basketball in the victory over Clemson, as the team shot 51.9 percent from the floor and finished with 21 assists against only nine turnovers. Missouri also forced 20 turnovers and earned a 21-10 edge in points from the foul line, enabling the squad to overcome a 41-30 rebounding disadvantage. Both Keith Ramsey and Kim English tallied 20 points, while Laurence Bowers pitched in 15 points for the Tigers. J.T. Tiller added 10 points for Missouri, which is averaging 77.8 ppg while limiting opponents to 66.2 ppg. English continues to lead the team with 14.1 ppg, and that output would be better if not for his 39.5 percent shooting from the field. Marcus Denmon and Bowers are contributing 10.8 ppg and 10.3 ppg, respectively. The Tigers are holding opponents to 41 percent field goal efficiency, but the team has struggled on the boards.

West Virginia is generating 73.1 ppg while limiting opponents to 63.4 ppg on 42 percent shooting from the field. The Mountaineers are a dominant rebounding team, as they are ripping down 6.9 rpg more than the opposition. Da'Sean Butler, one of the top performers in the Big East Conference, brings 17.2 ppg to the floor for WVU. Kevin Jones checks in with 13.6 ppg and 7.1 rpg, and he is shooting 52.8 percent from the floor. As for Devin Ebanks, the third and final double-digit scorer on the roster, he brings 12.0 ppg and 8.4 rpg to the court. West Virginia held Morgan State to 29.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first round, including 3-of-19 from three-point range. A 49-38 rebounding advantage also helped the cause for the Mountaineers, who finished with 20 assists against nine turnovers. Jones scored 17 points in the clash, while Ebanks tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Yellow Jackets and Buckeyes collide in second-round affair

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes and 10th-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets come together today in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The winner of this Midwest Regional pairing moves on to the Sweet 16 versus Tennessee.

The Yellow Jackets continued their late-season charge on Friday, as they upended Oklahoma State, 64-59, in the first round. Georgia Tech, which needed a good showing in the ACC Tournament just to earn an at-large bid to this event, improved to 5-0 in NCAA Tournament games played at the Bradley Center. The program is now one victory away from moving on to the "Sweet 16" for the first time since 2004.

On the flip side, the Buckeyes had a much easier time in their first-round game, posting a 68-51 win over 15th-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday. OSU, which won a share of the Big Ten regular-season title and then claimed the league tourney championship, are now 38-20 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The team is hoping to move on to the "Sweet 16" for the first time since advancing to the final game in 2007.

As for the all-time series between these two clubs, OSU owns a 10-3 advantage, but the Yellow Jackets have won the last two meetings.

Georgia Tech converted 24-of-25 free-throw attempts and dominated the boards, 32-17, as it slipped past Oklahoma State on Friday. As expected, the frontcourt tandem of Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal overmatched the smaller Cowboys, and they combined for 26 points and 15 rebounds. Lawal led the way with 14 points and six boards, meanwhile, Favors posted 12 points and nine rebounds. For the season, Lawal heads the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) as well as rebounding (8.6 rpg), while Favors follows with 12.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Iman Shumpert chips in with 10.1 ppg and he is in charge of feeding the frontcourt tandem, handing out a team-high 3.9 apg.

The Buckeyes drained 10-of-22 buckets from beyond the arc and held UCSB to a dismal 32.3 percent overall shooting performance, as they cruised to victory on Friday. Jon Diebler was outstanding in the win, tallying 23 points on 7- of-12 shooting from downtown. William Buford added 16 points and seven boards, while Evan Turner tallied nine points, 10 caroms and five assists. A National Player of the Year candidate, Turner is one of the most versatile players around and he paces OSU with 19.9 ppg, 9.2 rpg and 5.9 apg. Buford is next in line with 14.5 ppg and 3.1 apg, while Diebler adds 13.1 ppg on the strength of 42.9 percent shooting from long range. David Lighty also gets into the mix, as he puts forth 12.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 2.9 apg.

                          Sunday Night Tips

The Sunday night NBA card gives bettors an opportunity to place some final wagers before the weekend finishes with three games. Two of those contests will be broadcast nationally on ESPN, as the Hawks host the Spurs followed by the Blazers and Suns getting together in Phoenix.

Spurs (41-26 SU, 35-31-1 ATS) at Hawks (44-24 SU, 39-29 ATS)

San Antonio plays its third game this week on the road against a Southeast Division foe, heading to Atlanta to battle the Hawks. The Spurs stumbled in Orlando on Wednesday, falling to the Magic, 110-84 and snapping a four-game winning streak. San Antonio bounced back in a big way with a 147-116 dispatching of Golden State on Friday.

Mike Woodson's squad has won six of seven at home following Friday's overtime win against the Bobcats, but Atlanta is 2-5 ATS in this span. The 'over' has turned into a profitable play lately at Philips Arena, cashing in five of the last six games.

The Spurs have cleaned up against subpar competition recently, winning nine of eleven games with just three victories over teams above .500 (Suns, Grizzlies, and Heat). San Antonio is a solid 4-2 SU/ATS the last six games away from the AT&T Center following a 2-7 ATS run on the road through February.

The Hawks fell at San Antonio, 105-90 on January 27 as the Spurs cashed easily as three-point favorites. That victory by Gregg Popovich's team ended a three-game home skid at the time, the longest losing streak at the AT&T Center since January 2002. The Spurs have claimed nine of the last ten meetings in this series, including three consecutive wins in Atlanta.

Blazers (42-28 SU, 37-32-1 ATS) at Suns (43-26 SU, 40-29 ATS)

Portland and Phoenix hook up for the third time this season as the Suns look to top the Blazers for the first time. Both teams are coming off home victories on Friday in completely different fashion. The Suns took care of the Jazz for a third straight victory while the Blazers squeaked by the Wizards on a late Brandon Roy jumper.

The top eight teams in the Western Conference playoff race are pretty much set, with Houston and Memphis each 6 ½ games behind Portland for the eighth spot. The gap between the fifth and eighth position is 1 ½ games with the Suns and Blazers separated by that same margin.

The Blazers are riding a five-game winning streak, but each victory has come over teams that sit below the .500 mark. Portland owns a 6-3 ATS mark the last nine away from the Rose Garden, but has dropped the previous two as road underdogs at Chicago and Denver. Over this current 10-2 stretch, the Blazers have played two teams currently sitting in the top eight of their respective conference (Raptors twice and Nuggets).

Since falling at home to Portland prior to the All-Star Break, the Suns are 12-4 SU/ATS the last 16 contests, including a 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS mark in the Valley. The offense has been on fire recently, tallying at least 100 points in 12 of the last 13 games. Phoenix finally topped Utah for the first time this season, 110-100, cashing as 5 ½-point home ‘chalk.’

The Suns will try to break through after the Blazers pulled off a pair of close victories in the first two meetings. Portland rallied from a 15-point deficit to shock Phoenix at the Rose Garden on December 17 as 1 ½-point favorites, 105-102. The Blazers followed up that win with an outright road underdog triumph on February 10 as 9 ½-point ‘dogs, 108-101. The victory by Portland snapped a nine-game skid in Phoenix dating back to January 2005.

                          What else to watch for:

-- The Wizards try to end a ten-game skid as Washington wraps up a four-game West Coast swing at Staples Center against the Lakers (9:30 PM EST). Flip Saunders’ club has finished ‘under’ the total in nine of the last 11 games, while failing to break 100 points during this losing streak. The Wizards have competed well in their last two losses, covering in defeats at Denver and Portland. The Lakers are 2-7-1 ATS the previous ten at home, while going 1-5 ATS as double-digit favorites at Staples.

-- Quickly looking ahead to Monday, there are ten games on the card including a pair of quality interconference tip-offs. The Spurs head from Atlanta to Oklahoma City, trying to beat the Thunder for a third time this season. Elsewhere, the Celtics conclude a three-game road trip in Utah, as Boston is 4-2 SU/ATS the last six meetings in Salt Lake City.

Spurs seek further domination of Atlanta

The San Antonio Spurs’ last victory was impressive. A strong effort over the next five games would be even more so. San Antonio opens a critical stretch Sunday night at Philips Arena, where it will go for its eighth straight victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Coming off Wednesday’s 26-point loss at Orlando, the Spurs (41-26, 34-32-1 ATS) routed Golden State 147-116 on Friday in their highest-scoring game since a 161-153 victory over Denver on Nov. 7, 1990.

“The win is more important than the points,” guard George Hill said.

San Antonio, which has won nine of 11 (8-3 ATS), is seventh in the Western Conference. Upcoming games against Atlanta (44-24, 39-29 ATS), Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland and Boston could make it difficult for the Spurs to improve their position.

“The last 15 (games) are going to be really rough, so it’s good to get a good win,” guard Manu Ginobili said after scoring 23 points with a season-high 11 assists in 22 minutes Friday. “We have a really rough back-to-back now with Atlanta and Oklahoma City. Good teams, strong at home.” If San Antonio can keep up this quality of play, they might improve upon 10-2 ATS record after consecutive games committing 11 or less turnovers this season.

A last-second shot by Joe Johnson helped the Hawks defeat Charlotte 93-92 in overtime Friday as six-point favorites for their fifth straight home win. Atlanta, though, has dropped three in a row (1-2 ATS) at Philips Arena against San Antonio.

Tony Parker had 42 points and 10 assists in the Spurs’ last visit to Atlanta - a 102-92 win March 25 - but the three-time All-Star could be out the rest of the season with a broken right hand.

Parker sprained his left ankle in a 105-90 home win over Atlanta on Jan. 27, when Tim Duncan carried San Antonio with 21 points, a career-high 27 rebounds and six assists. The Hawks are 29-14 ATS revenging a road loss of 10 points or more over the last three seasons.

Duncan should be well rested for this matchup after scoring 17 points in 14 minutes Friday. “It’s always good to see (the bench) play and get them more experience, and of course it’s good to get Manu and Timmy some rest,” coach Gregg Popovich said.

Ginobili and Duncan might need to play more against a Hawks team trying to make a push up the East standings. The continued strong play from Johnson could help Atlanta make that move. After missing two games with Achilles’ tendinitis, the four-time All-Star scored 16 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime Friday, hitting the winner with 0.1 seconds left.

“Joe is a pro,” said coach Mike Woodson, whose team has won four of five and is four games behind Southeast Division-leading Orlando. “He’s an All-Star. He’s capable of making shots when he needs to.” Johnson had 31 points Jan. 27 and is averaging 30.0 in the last three games in this series.

Sportsbook.com has Atlanta favored by three points for this 8:00 Eastern encounter on ESPN, with a total of 194. The Hawks are 15-7 ATS versus good shooting teams like the Spurs who make 46 percent or more of their shots and off their low scoring affair with the Bobcats, are 20-6 OVER after one or more consecutive Under’s this season.

San Antonio should come in ready since they are 13-4 ATS off a home win by 10 points or more and are 15-5 UNDER as a road underdog of three points or less dating back to last year.

Atlanta’s last victory over San Antonio was 94-84 at home Dec. 10, 2005.

Terrapins tangle with Spartans in Midwest Regional action

Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - The ACC meets the Big Ten in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament today, as the fifth-seeded Maryland Terrapins battle the fourth-seeded Michigan State Spartans at Spokane Memorial Arena. The winner of this Midwest Regional contest will move on to the Sweet 16 to challenge Northern Iowa.
Winners of 10 of their last 12 outings, the Terps took care of business in first-round action on Friday, notching an 89-77 victory over 13th-seeded Houston. It marked the 10th straight first-round win for Maryland, which improved to 38-22 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. With another win today, the Terps would move on to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003.
As for Michigan State, it had its hands full with 12th-seeded New Mexico State on Friday, but hung on for a 70-67 first-round win. The Spartans, making their 13th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, are trying to duplicate last year's run when they advanced to the Championship Game.
The all-time series between Michigan State and Maryland is knotted at 2-2, with the Terps taking the last two meetings, including an 80-62 decision in 2008.
Jordan Williams was unstoppable on Friday, recording career-highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds to lead Maryland past Houston. It was the seventh double- double of the season for Williams, who is averaging 9.6 ppg and 8.6 rpg. Landon Milbourne added 19 points and seven rebounds, while Greivis Vasquez turned in 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Eric Hayes tacked on 11 points and six helpers for Maryland, which dominated the glass, 50-29. The Terps are barely outrebounding opponents on the season, so don't expect that kind of dominance against MSU today. Maryland though, can score with the best of them, averaging a robust 79.6 ppg. Vasquez, the ACC Player of the Year, is the focal point of the UM attack and he produces 19.4 ppg and 6.2 apg. Milbourne checks in with 12.7 ppg and 5.0 rpg, and Hayes contributes 11.1 ppg and 3.8 apg. Kalin Lucas poured in a career-high 25 points and the Spartans hit several key shots down the stretch to top New Mexico State on Friday. Lucas also dished out four assists for the Spartans, who outscored the Aggies, 23-13, at the foul line. Durrell Summers logged 14 points, and Raymar Morgan pitched in with 11. For the season, Lucas heads MSU in scoring at 15.2 ppg and he is also distributing a team-high 3.9 apg. Morgan ranks second with 11.4 ppg and 6.1 rpg, while Summers puts fourth 10.2 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Draymond Green provides a spark off the bench with 9.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg and 3.0 apg for Michigan State, which is outrebounding opponents by 8.8 rpg for the season.
