    Daily Sports Roundup: March 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Habs battle the rival Leafs, the Mavs take on the Celtics, and Kansas and Kentucky play their second-round matchups.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has just seven games on tap for Saturday, with Chicago at Philadelphia, Charlotte at Miami, Toronto at New Jersey, Golden State at Memphis, Milwaukee at Denver, New Orleans at Utah, and Boston at Dallas. The Mavericks got back into the win column with a 113-106 victory over the Bulls in their last game on Wednesday night, and they beat the Celtics 99-90 when the teams last met in Boston back on January 18. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with 37 points that day, while Shawn Marion turned in a 16-point effort. Paul Pierce had 24 points in the loss for Boston, and Ray Allen scored 21 points.

As well, top seeds Kansas and Kentucky are back in action in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Jayhawks got past No. 16 Lehigh in their tournament opener on Thursday, grabbing a 90-74 win behind 26 points from Marcus Morris. Kansas will now take on No. 9 Northern Iowa on Saturday as a 11.5-point favorite. The Wildcats had an even easier time against No. 16 East Tennessee State on Thursday, with Eric Bledsoe scoring 29 points in a 100-71 romp. Kentucky now faces No. 9 Wake Forest on Saturday as a 9-point favorite.

Along with Northern Iowa vs. Kansas it'll also be No. 14 Ohio vs. No. 6 Tennessee (-8.5) in Midwest Region action on Saturday, while No. 11 Washington (-1.5) vs. No. 3 New Mexico joins Wake Forest vs. Kentucky on the East Region slate. In Saturday's South Region action it'll be No. 10 St. Mary's vs. No. 2 Villanova (-4.5) and No. 11 Old Dominion vs. No. 3 Baylor (-4.5), and the West Region has No. 7 BYU vs. No. 2 Kansas State (-4.5) and No. 13 Murray State vs. No. 5 Butler (-4.5). Murray State beat No. 4 Vanderbilt 66-65 Thursday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 11 games on the NHL's schedule for Saturday, with Carolina at Pittsburgh, Ottawa at Dallas, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Buffalo at Florida, St. Louis at New Jersey, Washington at Tampa Bay, Columbus at Nashville, Chicago at Phoenix, Detroit at Vancouver, the Islanders at Los Angeles, and Montreal at Toronto. The 36-29-6 Canadiens enter Saturday's matchup on a six-game winning streak, as they defeated the Rangers 3-1 on the road in their last game on Tuesday night. The 25-34-12 Maple Leafs have won two straight games, topping New Jersey 2-1 Thursday. Montreal is 3-1 against Toronto on the season.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers – Derrick Rose (wrist) has missed the last three games and is questionable. Luol Deng (calf) will miss his fifth straight game. Thaddeus Young (finger) will not play in the game. Both teams played Friday night.

Toronto Raptors at New Jersey Nets – Devin Harris (illness) has missed the last two games but is expected to play. Yi Jianlian (ankle) hasn’t played since March 6 but is probable.

Golden State Warriors at Memphis Grizzlies – Marc Gasol (neck) has missed two straight games and is doubtful. Stephen Curry sprained his left ankle and he was questionable going into Friday’s game.

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz – Deron Williams (ankle) and Wesley Matthews (knee) were both probable heading into Friday’s game.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Bobcats-Heat game has skyrocketed since its low opener of 180. Most shops are currently offering 182.5, but the last two in this series have gone under.

The Celtics-Mavs total has risen one point since opening at 201. Four of the last five games between these teams have gone under.

      Who’s hot

Charlotte is 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in its last eight outings.

Butler has won 21 consecutive games.

The Canadiens have won six straight with four of those wins coming as underdogs.

      Who’s not

Chicago has lost nine straight games, going 2-7 ATS.

North Carolina is 3-7 SU and ATS in its last 10 games.

The Hornets are 2-8 SU and ATS in their last 10 games.

      Key stat

7 – Number of games decided by single digits on the first day of the NCAA Tournament. Underdogs went 11-4 ATS on Thursday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nets point guard Devin Harris has missed the last two games with an upper respiratory infection but is expected to be back in the lineup on Saturday versus the Raptors. For New Jersey to have any chance of a win, or cover, the team has to have Harris in the lineup. He averages more than 20 points and six assists per game and the team is 0-2 SU and ATS in their last two games without him.

      Notable quotable

"I think sometimes when he doesn’t get the basketball, he gets a little frustrated and it has been tough with sliding Chris (Bosh) back into the lineup for him to get touches.”

-- Raptors head coach Jay Triano on the recent play of center Andrea Bargnani.

      Tips and notes

      - Villanova head coach Jay Wright is rumored to be headed to the NBA. Wright benched two of his starters in Thursday’s win over Robert Morris and it nearly cost the team the game. Minnesota’s Tubby Smith has reportedly struck a deal to become Auburn’s next head coach and that was likely a distraction for the team in its loss Friday. Could the rumors swirling around Wright affect Nova’s players?

      - Nets center Brook Lopez left in the middle of Friday’s practice because of his frustration with his team and the attention he’s been getting from opponents recently. With constant double- and triple-teams, Lopez’s numbers have dropped significantly during March. Point guard Devin Harris said Lopez is the team’s “focal point in the paint” and “we need to first and foremost try to get him going.” Things haven’t been right in New Jersey all season.

      - Padraig Harrington leads the Transitions Championship after two rounds despite visiting the White House for the president’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. He thought the missed practice day would affect him but after shooting a 65 on Friday said he is “getting more comfortable with the golf course.” The Irishman also said he will take the same carefree attitude and gameplan that allows him to just “fire” at the pins into the final two rounds. Harrington is +325 odds to win the tournament.

        Saturday six-pack

-- Mike Bellotti quit as Oregon's AD, signed up with ESPN as football analyst; apparently, he hated being an administrator- I'm guessing firing Ernie Kent after 13 mostly good basketball years was the last straw.

-- Strong rumors that Tubby Smith is going to sign on at
Auburn, as the Tigers get ready to open a spiffy new arena next season.

-- Jeremy Tyler, who quit HS to play pro hoop in Israel, quit his team with five weeks left in season; the whole episode seems like a debasco. Tyler can't play in college, isn't eligible for the NBA Draft until 2011. If he isn't good enough to start in Israel, where does he go now?

-- Royals beat Arizona 24-9 in spring training; they led 15-0 in the 3rd. Bannister pitched four scoreless innings, pretty good in a 24-9 game.

-- Steven Strasburg allowed two runs in four IP against St Louis, with eight strikeouts and no walks. Not too bad for the kid.

-- Anderson Cooper lost to Cheech Marin on Jeopardy; after last year, when Wolf Blitzer lost to Andy Richter, I expected more from CNN.

        *****************************************

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up second day of March Madness

        13) Utah State/UTEP did nothing to justify their being last two teams in tournament; well, at least UTEP was up six at half in its game. I wonder if the committee remembers from year-to-year on these things........

        12) Seems like the bubble teams that got it haven't lasted too long; UTEP, Utah State, Notre Dame, Florida, Minnesota; Georgis Tech is probably worst of the bubblicious teams that won in first round.

        11) Cornell shot 68% in first half, 56% for game in beating Temple, first Ivy League win in NCAAs in 12 years. Wofford came close to an upset of Wisconsin, which would have set up Cornell-Wofford in second round, which would have been more than a little strange.

        10) West Virginia started game 0-11 from floor, going scoreless for first 5:23, but once they got it rolling, it was lights out for Morgan State as the Mountaineers won by 27 and next will face Missouri's press Sunday.

        9) Criticism of Mountaineers all year was their lack of true point guard; now that "weakness" will be tested to the hilt by the pressing Tigers. Guess here is West Virginia will come through it just fine.

        8) Temple is now 0-3 in first round under Fran Dunphy, who is a terrific coach; this year's loss hurts a little more, since they were underdogs the last two years, but were favored to beat Cornell.

        7) Oliver Purnell has done wonders with Clemson's program, but he's still winless in NCAAs, I believe 0-6. Today's game was one they needed to win, facing a Mizzou team that likes to go up and down. Not good.

        6) Washington (-1.5) is favored over New Mexico Saturday; it is the first time ever an 11-seed is favored to beat a 3-seed.

        5) CBS should bring in Arizona coach Sean Miller an analyst for Xavier-Pitt game Sunday; Miller played for Pitt, was coach at Xavier until this season. That figures to be a bruising game Sunday.

        4) Kelvin Sampson's shadow still looms over the tournament; Bassett kid on Ohio and the Crawford kid on Xavier were both at Indiana until all hell broke loose off the floor in Bloomington.

        3) Ugly end to long season for Rick Pitino, who got a technical with 2:25 left, and the outcome pretty much already decided. Cal's seniors shot the ball really well, and Randle's 40-footer at halftime buzzer didn't hurt.

        2) Have to wonder when they call lane violation on a foul shot with 0:18 left against a WAC team playing a Big 11 power club. I'm just saying, it doesn't seem fair. Robert Morris got hosed bigtime against Villanova, and New Mexico State's coach was steaming after his game. Odd timing.

        1) We're down to 32 teams; every game from here on in figures as tooth-and-nail struggle. Should be fun 16 games to watch the next two days.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at New Jersey Nets

The Raptors escaped with a last-second win over the Hawks on Wednesday but make no mistake; this is still a team in complete disarray.

Jay Triano’s coaching tactics are being questioned, Chris Bosh has called out his team on numerous occasions and Jarrett Jack is disgruntled after his removal from the starting lineup.

Last week following a loss Triano called his team’s play selfish but Jack wasn’t seeing eye-to-eye with his coach.

"I don't think guys were selfish. Obviously we encourage people to take shots when they think they have 'em," Jack said. "Maybe coach can elaborate on it if that's what he saw. I didn't see it that way."

The win over Atlanta was Toronto’s second in its last 12 games. The Raps were humiliated at home by the Thunder on Friday night and are 4-14 ATS in their last 18 games.

As long as Devin Harris is back in the lineup on Saturday, the Nets should get the victory.

          Pick: Nets

Golden State Warriors at Memphis Grizzlies

Forget about the Bucks, the Warriors are the Association’s cash cow right now.

Heading into Friday’s game, Golden State had covered the spread in five straight and was 8-2 ATS over its last 10 games.

Despite being plagued by a myriad of injuries that forces G-State to play a fistful of D-leaguers, the Warriors have been one of the most profitable teams in 2010, going 23-13 ATS.

One concern going into this game is the health of rookie guard Stephen Curry. Curry sprained his left ankle in the team’s last game but traveled with the club for its two-game road trip. He did not suit up in Friday’s matchup against the Spurs.

There isn’t a line on this game because of Curry’s injury but it should be close to double digits regardless. The Warriors are 10-3 ATS this season when double-digit underdogs.

          Pick: Warriors

                Write-Up

                Saturday, March 20

                Saturday's NCAA games
Villanova got bailed out by refs in first round; they're 3-5 in last eight games, playing St Mary's team that beat Portland/Gonzaga/Richmond in last three games, by 14-19-9 points. Gaels will hurt Villanova inside; vs Richmond, they had 18 offensive boards, outrebounding Spiders 39-16. #2 seeds are 11-17 vs spread in this round the last seven years.

Ohio U ran Georgetown off floor Thursday, shooting 58% from floor, 13 of 23 from arc, but since 1991, #14 seeds are 2-7 vs spread in second round games, with last cover in '97. Favorites are 12-4 vs spread in this bracket the last four years. Tennessee is 6-1 in last seven games, just 3-7 vs spread in last 10 games as favorite. Ohio covered 11 of last 12 games.

Old Dominion is terrific on offensive boards; they get highest %age of their points on 2-point shots of any team in US, so a different challenge for Baylor, which is much better on defense now (held Sam Houston to 5-31 from arc in first round). Since 2003, #11 seeds are 1-6 vs spread in this round. Bears will need more from Tweety Carter (2 pts Thursday).

Kentucky made 15-33 from arc Thursday in very easy win; #1 seeds are 11-8-1 vs spread in this round last five years, but just 4-7-1 since '04 if they're single digit favorite. Wildcats beat UNC by hoop in only game vs ACC foe this season. Wake Forest lost five of last seven games; they're 6-3 vs spread as dog this season, survived 20 turnovers in win vs Texas.

BYU won eight of last 10 games; they forced 21 turnovers in double OT win Thursday; #2 seeds are 6-14 vs spread in this round last five years. Kansas State blocked 10 shots in first round win, but BYU makes 41.6% from arc, 3rd-best %age in country, so they're harder to guard than No. Texas. Big 12 faves are 46-31 vs spread in non-league games this season.

Kansas struggled for half with Lehigh, also struggled with Cornell, a team that plays similar style to Northern Iowa; will Jayhawks (ranked 31st in offensive rebounding) outrebound Panthers (#7 on defensive baords)? #1 seeds are 9-4 vs spread as double-digit favorite in this round since '03. UNI won by 3 at Iowa State, their only game vs Big 12 foe this season.

Butler hasn't lost since Dec 22, winning 21 in row; they outscored good UTEP squad 50-26 in second half Thursday, making 13-31 from the arc. Over last six years, 4-5 seeds are 4-4 vs spread when facing 12-13 seed that posted upset in first round (9-12 vs spread since '97). Murray State made just 9-17 from foul line vs Vandy, but made 7-15 behind the arc.

Washington won its last eight games, all away from home; they're much better than usual 11-seed, but 11-seeds are just 1-6 vs spread in second round games since '03. New Mexico star Hobson hurt his left (shooting) wrist Thursday, don't think he will be 100% here. Lobos held Montana star Johnson to 1-12 from floor, but Huskies are more diverse with ball. This is first time ever an 11-seed is favored to beat a 3-seed.

                    NCAA Tournament: Regionals Day 3
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    East regional

No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats (-9.5, 143) vs. No. 9 Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 8:15 p.m.

On paper, Wake Forest (20-10, 16-11 ATS) looks like it should be able to play with Kentucky.

That obviously didn’t mean much to oddsmakers, who made the Demon Deacons hefty underdogs in Saturday’s night cap in New Orleans.

The Demon Deacons have three players 6-11 or taller, including 7-foot stiff Chas McFarland. So they’ve at least got the size and depth to bang on Kentucky’s stud big men DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson as well as rapidly improving freshman Daniel Orton.

Wake is also talented enough not to get overwhelmed by the Wildcats’ ridiculous wealth of future professionals.

Demon Deacon sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu is a future lottery pick, and point guard Ishmael Smith is one of the best in the ACC. Smith hit the game-winner in Thursday’s overtime win over Texas.

Kentucky (33-2, 18-15 ATS) had a much easier time with East Tennessee State in the first round. Everything was clicking for the Wildcats, who reached triple digits for the third time this season in Thursday’s 29-point rout of ETSU.

Kentucky has a significant coaching edge, with Wake’s Dino Gaudio coaching in only the third NCAA tournament game of his fledgling career.

Prediction: Kentucky 77, Wake Forest 68

                    No. 3 New Mexico Lobos vs. No. 11 Washington Huskies (-2, 151), 5:50 p.m.

Yes, the Huskies (25-9, 15-18 ATS) were ultra impressive in their first-round win over Marquette. In front of a loud bunch of UW fans, they rallied from 15 down in the second half and got a game-winning bucket from star Quincy Poindexter to advance.

But it’s still somewhat surprising that 12th-seeded Washington opened as the favorite over the third-seeded Lobos, who couldn’t put away Montana in Thursday’s finale.

New Mexico, after all, has won 30 games this season. But who have they really beaten? The Lobos have two wins over a BYU team that needed two overtimes to beat a Florida team that was lucky to get an invite to the tournament.

Washington’s schedule wasn’t exactly loaded with juggernauts, either.

Both teams beat Texas A&M in December. New Mexico topped the Aggies, 80-77. Washington beat A&M, 73-64.

Prediction: Washington 79, New Mexico 71

                    South regional

                    No. 10 St. Mary’s Gaels vs. No. 2 Villanova Wildcats (-4.5, 153), 1:05 p.m.

Trailing by eight points with only 4:19 remaining against 15th-seeded Robert Morris, Villanova rallied and survived a scare in Thursday’s opening round, winning 73-70 in overtime. Wildcats coach Jay Wright benched standouts Scottie Reynolds (18.6 ppg, 3.3 apg) and Corey Fisher (13.5 ppg, 4.0 apg), the team’s top two scorers, for the start of the game because of a “minor infraction.”

Reynolds would see plenty of action but was cold from the field, making just 2-of-15 field goals. However, the star guard made 15-of-16 from the charity stripe, including a few clutch ones down the stretch.

While Villanova was disappointing in the tourney’s first round, St. Mary’s was certainly impressive, defeating favored Richmond 80-71. The Gaels’ big man Omar Samhan (21.2 ppg, 11.0 rpg) had 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds after scoring just 25 in St. Mary’s previous two games combined.

In winning their first NCAA tournament contest since 1959, the Gaels captured their sixth consecutive game (5-1 ATS), including two in a row as an underdog.

Villanova’s victory was just its third in the last eight games. Since the beginning of February, Nova is only 3-9 ATS.

The Wildcats are certainly having troubles, especially on the defensive end, but they are still a potent team. Reynolds will be back in the starting lineup against the Gaels and likely won’t have back-to-back outings of poor shooting.

Remember last year’s opening round? Villanova, a 15-point favorite, trailed 14th-seeded American by double digits before rallying for a win. The Wildcats would win three more games, two as an underdog, on their way to a Final Four.

St. Mary’s should fall victim in another close victory for Villanova.

Final score prediction: Villanova 78, St, Mary’s 73

                    No. 11 Old Dominion Monarchs vs. No. 3 Baylor Bears (-4, 129.5), 5:45 p.m.

Baylor and Old Dominion face off in the second round in what is perceived to be a tussle between two great defenses. Old Dominion ranks in the nation’s top 20 in scoring defense, 3-point defense and defensive rebounds. Baylor is seventh in the county in field goal percentage defense.

It was the Bears’ defense which led them to a 68-59 victory over Sam Houston State Thursday. The Bearkats, who actually led No. 3-seeded Baylor by one at halftime, shot less than 34 percent from the floor and made just six of 31 from beyond the arc. This was the same Sam Houston State team that scored 90 or more points 11 times this season, including 92 points versus Kentucky.

Baylor guard Tweety Carter (15.2 ppg, 6.0 apg), the Bears’ second-leading scorer, was held to two points but Ekpe Udoh (14.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.8 blocks) picked up the slack with a team-leading 20 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. The Baylor victory was its first in the NCAAs in 60 years.

Old Dominion’s defense, as usual, was fantastic in a 51-50 opening-round win over Notre Dame. However, as has been the case for most the season, the Monarchs struggled on the offensive end, shooting less than 42 percent from the field, including hitting just 3-of-13 treys.

Since it is very difficult to get points inside on the Bears’ 2-3 zone, Old Dominion will need to score points via 3-pointers and free throws if it is going to beat Baylor. The problem is shooting the three and making free throws are the Monarchs’ main weaknesses, ranking 280th and 298th, respectively, in the two offensive categories of the 347 Division-I teams.

This game’s line is much too low. In what should be a relatively easy Baylor victory, the Bears’ tremendous defensive play will continue while Carter likely bounces back after an off game.

Final score prediction: Baylor 67, Old Dominion 52

                    Midwest regional

No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks vs. No. 9 Northern Iowa Panthers (+11.5, 127)

Northern Iowa (29-4) escaped with a 69-66 minor upset win over UNLV on Ali Farokhmanesh’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds. It was the first NCAA Tournament win for the Panthers in 20 years.

UNLV held Missouri Valley player of the year Adam Koch to 11 points on just 2-of-4 shooting, but Koch and the rest of the Panthers went 20-of-23 from the free-throw line.

“It feels good to do this for this program,” Farokhmanesh told the Des Moines Register. “We’ve come from a long ways.”

While UNI will obviously be looking to pull off a major upset Saturday, the goal of this program since before the tournament started was to get that elusive win.

Kansas (33-2) looked unimpressive against No. 16 Lehigh before the Jayhawks wore down their opponent for a 90-74 first-round win. They shot 65 percent in the second half to pull away.

The game’s most interesting matchup will come in the paint, where Northern Iowa’s 7-footer Jordan Eglseder (11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 54 percent FG) will bang with Kansas’ 7-footer Cole Aldrich (11.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg (56 percent). Not many teams have attempted to attack Aldrich this season.

Northern Iowa is the kind of team that can put a scare into Kansas: deep, hits 3s, good size. But Kansas has all those attributes, too, and simply has superior weapons.

Prediction: Kansas 65, Northern Iowa 59

No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers vs. No. 14 Ohio Bobcats (+9, 140.5)

Ohio (22-14) pulled off the biggest stunner of the opening day, cruising to a 97-83 win over No. 3 Georgetown.

The Bobcats, who had no chance of matching up with the size of the Hoyas, shot over them, hitting 13-of-23 three-point attempts and were 58 percent overall. The backcourt tandem of Armon Bassett and D.J. Cooper befuddled G’town with 32 points and 23 points, respectively.

Ohio has been outscoring teams most of the season, averaging 74.9 ppg. Outscoring an offensive-minded Tennessee team, however, will be tougher than defensive-minded Georgetown.

The Volunteers (26-8) averaged 73.3 ppg but has the ability to play disruptive defense. Wayne Chism and Scott Hopson are constants for Tennessee, but the team is much better when J.P. Prince comes to play. The inconsistent 6-7 senior had 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting on Thursday.

Depth could become a concern for Ohio. Tennessee also goes a solid nine deep, while three Ohio starters played 37 or more minutes against Georgetown and typically plays just seven.

Ohio isn’t going to roll over, but Tennessee is just a better, deeper version of the Bobcats.

                    Prediction: Tennessee 81, Ohio 74

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Dallas Stars (-120, 5.5)

The Senators are mired in a four-game slide and have lost seven of eight games since the Olympic break.

Ottawa’s top-five scorers have combined for a single goal during the losing streak and the team has scored a total of five goals in that same span.

"We still need our top six or seven forwards to be more offensive. Our third and fourth lines are the guys that scored two of the three goals," coach Cory Clouston said. "We had a lot of chances (in the Atlanta game) but we had the same results. We're not scoring on the chances."

Kari Lehtonen will be under the net for the Stars on Saturday and will try to extend the Sens’ offensive woes. Dallas’ backup goalie has surrendered six goals in his last three games and boasts a career 2.79 goals-against average versus Ottawa.

The Senators could be down one offensive threat if Milan Michalek is unable to play on Saturday. He is listed as questionable with a leg injury.

                        Pick: Stars

St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils (-165, 5.5)

The Devils might as well not even attempt to draw penalties because the one-man advantage opportunity has produced zero goals in the last five games (0-14).

"We don't build any confidence with our power play," coach Jacques Lemaire said. "When it's time to skate, they don't skate. They shoot the puck in, nobody goes and gets the puck."

The power-play struggles has Jersey averaging less than three goals per game during its last five.

The Blues are attempting to make another late season run and squeeze into the playoff picture. St. Louis has won eight of 11 with five road victories in that stretch.

"We're in a desperate situation where we need wins," said Paul Kariya,

                        Pick: Blues

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs (-110, 5.5)

The red-hot Montreal Canadiens look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they visit the rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Habs' 7-1 run since the Olympic Break has helped Montreal solidify its playoff positioning. Going into Friday's action, the Canadiens owned a 7-point bulge over the ninth-place Thrashers and Rangers.

Toronto is also playing some pretty good hockey lately. The Leafs have won six of their last eight and are coming off back-to-back wins over the Senators and Devils.

                          Injury report

Ravaged by injuries all season, Montreal still isn't quite at full strength. Defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and leading goal-scorer Mike Cammalleri are still recovering from knee injuries and neither are expected back until next week.

Toronto remains without defensemen Mike Komisarek and Mike Van Ryn, both of whom are out for the season.

                          No bad Hab-its

The Leafs are hopelessly out of the playoff hunt, but Habs coach Jacques Martin still feels Toronto can be a dangerous opponent for his squad.

"I think it's important for our team to focus on one game at a time," Martin told reporters. "You know going down the stretch some of the tougher games you have are against teams that have been eliminated. They play loose."

                          Playing spoiler

The Leafs currently occupy the basement of the Eastern Conference, but they don't want to stay there. Toronto showed effort and hustle this week in earning victories over the Senators and Devils, two teams well ahead of them in the standings.

The Buds trailed Carolina by four points for 14th in the East going into Friday's action. The Panthers, Islanders and Lightning are also within reach.

"We don't want to be last in the conference," John Mitchell, who scored the shootout winner Thursday against the Devils, told the media. "We want to pass as many teams as possible."

                          Scoring spree

Scoring has been in vogue in recent meetings between the Leafs and Habs. The over is 17-6-3 in the last 26 clashes in Toronto and 25-9-4 in the last 38 matchups overall.

Oddsmakers have bumped the total up to six goals on the last eight Montreal-Toronto contests. The under has cashed in the last two meetings.

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (-145, 5.5)

The Detroit Red Wings continue their push for the playoffs with another crucial game in Vancouver against the host Canucks.

Going into Friday, Detroit had won six of eight games since the Olympic Break to move past the Flames into eighth spot in the West.

Vancouver has built a comfortable 5-point lead over the Avalanche in the Northwest Division. The Canucks are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

                          Finally healthy

Detroit's strong play recently can be attributed to the return of several important players to its lineup. Forwards Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen have sparked the Red Wings' power play and Niklas Kronwall has played some of his best hockey in the last three games.

Franzen has six goals since returning February 9 and his presence has also rejuvenated Pavel Datsyuk (seven goals, five assists in that time).

"They are really clicking," Wings goalie Chris Osgood told reporters. "It's a give and take thing for both. They really complement each other."

                          Happy to be home

With the Olympics taking place in Vancouver, the Canucks were forced to play 14 consecutive road games before and after the break – the longest road trip in NHL history. Vancouver went 8-5-1 during that stretch.

Since returning home, the Canucks have won three of four at GM Place, including a 3-2 win over the Sharks in their last outing.

“We were just excited to get back,” Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo told the press. “It (had) been such a long time that we hadn’t played here and guys were just excited to play in front of the home fans.”

                          Can't breathe easy

Despite their improved play of late, the Red Wings realize their playoff positioning is still precarious at best.

The team enjoyed a three-day getaway in Kelowna, B.C. this week before visiting Edmonton Friday night where it hoped to avoid a letdown against the mediocre Oilers.

"We can't really think we are out of the woods," captain Nick Lidstrom told reporters. "We have to focus on what we need to do. We can't relax. Our lead (over Calgary) can turn in a hurry."

                          Trends

Vancouver games have been an offensive showcase of late. The over is 10-2 in the Canucks' last 12 overall and 10-2-1 in their last 13 against the West.

Detroit is also clicking offensively, going over in five of its last seven games.

Vancouver has won 12 of its past 14 Saturday games and is 42-13 in its last 55 contests at home.
