    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, March 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: College hoops tournaments continue around the country, while the Kings meet the Stars, and the Suns play host to the Lakers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a dozen games on Friday night, including a big Western clash between the Lakers and Suns in Phoenix. Los Angeles (47-18 SU, 27-36-2 ATS) shook off their skid with a 109-107 home win over the Raptors on Tuesday night. Kobe Bryant led the way with 32 points for the Lakers in that contest, while Andrew Bynum was good for 22 points on the night. The Suns (40-25 SU, 37-27-1 ATS) got past Indiana 113-105 in their last game on Saturday. Phoenix is 1-2 vs. the Lakers this season, and forward Channing Frye (suspension) is out Friday.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Friday: the Clippers at Charlotte, Indiana at Boston, Chicago at Miami, New York at Memphis, New Jersey at Oklahoma City, Washington at Detroit, Denver at New Orleans, San Antonio at Minnesota, Utah at Milwaukee, Portland at Sacramento, and Cleveland at Philadelphia. The Cavaliers (50-15 SU, 31-32-2 ATS) got back into the win column with a 97-95 home win over San Antonio in their last game on Monday night. LeBron James sat out that contest to rest his sore ankle, but he is expected to play Friday night.

As well, the bigger college basketball tournaments in the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big 10, C-USA, MWC, Pac-10, and SEC hit their middle stages on Friday, in advance of the weekend's championship games. Two ranked teams will also hit the floor in the Atlantic 10 tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Friday, with St. Bonaventure at No. 17 Temple, and Dayton at No. 24 Xavier. The Owls (26-5 SU, 20-11 ATS) had no trouble with St. Bonaventure in their regular-season meeting, winning 73-55 on the road. The Musketeers (23-7 SU, 19-10 ATS) beat Dayton 78-74 at home but lost 90-65 on the road in their two meetings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just six games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Tampa Bay at Washington, Pittsburgh at New Jersey, Minnesota at Buffalo, the Rangers at Atlanta, Nashville at Anaheim, and Los Angeles at Dallas. The 39-22-5 Kings are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss in Chicago on Wednesday night. Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings in that game, while Jon Quick made 40 saves. The 29-25-12 Stars fell 5-3 in Buffalo in their last game on Wednesday night, and they've picked up the loss in all four games vs. the Kings this season.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Cleveland Cavaliers at Philadelphia 76ers: Cavs forwards LeBron James (ankle) is probable and Antawn Jamison (knee) is doubtful.

Los Angeles Clippers at Charlotte Bobcats: Clippers guard Eric Gordon (leg) is questionable. Bobcats centers Nazr Mohammed (back) and DeSagana Diop (knee) are questionable.

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat: Heat forwards Michael Beasley (thigh) and Dorell Wright (possible suspension) are listed as questionable. Bulls guard Derrick Rose (wrist) left Thursday night's game vs. Magic.

Lines to keep an eye on

Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons: Total opened at 190.5 and had jumped to 191.5. The Wizards have hit the under in their last five.

Utah Jazz at Milwaukee Bucks: Total opened at 196.5 and dropped to 195.5. The Bucks have played in four straight unders but the over is 8-1 in Jazz's last nine.

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns: After opening as a pick 'em, the Lakers are now 1-point favorites. The Lakers are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 while the Suns are 8-2 ATS in their last 10.

      Who's hot

Milwaukee Bucks are 10-0-1 ATS in their last 11.

San Antonio Spurs are 10-0 SU in last 10 vs. Timberwolves.

New Jersey Nets are 8-0-1 in their last nine road games.

Cleveland Cavaliers are 7-1 SU in their last eight.

Charlotte Bobcats have won four in a row SU and ATS.

      Who's not

Minnesota Timberwolves are 1-13 SU in their last 14.

Philadelphia 76ers are 1-7 SU in their last eight.

Los Angeles Clippers are 1-7 SU in their last eight.

Chicago Bulls have lost five in a row SU and ATS.

Tampa Bay Lightning have lost six of their last seven.

      Key stat

25 - Number of SEC Tournament titles won by Kentucky. The other 11 teams in the conference have combined to win 22.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

LeBron James should be back in the lineup for the Cavs tonight, but they will be without forward Antawn Jamison, who has stiffness in his knee. Since coming to Cleveland from Washington at the trade deadline, Jamison has blended well with his new teammates. He scored 47 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the last two games without James.

      Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns

      Notable quotable

"I read Mike tried to answer that by saying we'll know it when we see it. At the same time, it'd be nice to know what that is and what that meant."

NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Brad Keselowski, who was wrecked by Carl Edwards last week at Atlanta, said of NASCAR president Mike Helton and the new "have at it, boys" policy regarding rough driving.

      Tips and notes

The Miami Heat have been feeling the heat lately with the loss of two key role players over the last week. After guard Rafer Alston stunned the team by going AWOL last Friday, forward Dorell Wright was arrested for DUI Thursday morning and will likely sit out with a suspension tonight against the Bulls. Injuries are part of the game, but these kinds of losses can take a toll on a team.

Virginia won its first-round ACC Tournament game over Boston College but the Cavaliers had lost nine straight SU and ATS before the win and lost two of their top players - leading scorer Sylven Landesberg (academics) and guard Calvin Baker (personal) - earlier this week. Duke, which is 9-1 SU and ATS in its last 10 have won the last four meetings by an average margin of 20 points per game.

The schedule crunch is catching up to the Nashville Predators, who are on a three-game, four-day road trip that spans three time zones. The Preds lost at Atlanta on Tuesday, flew cross-country on Wednesday and did not have a time to get on the ice before Thursday's game at San Jose, which hadn't played since Saturday. Now they must catch the red-eye down the coast to face the Ducks, who are on two days rest.

        Friday six-pack

-- Sam Bradford scored 36 on the NFL's Wonderlic Test, given at the NFL Combine; Jimmy Clausen got 23, Tim Tebow 22, low for QBs.

-- Bud Selig has one great idea; radical realignment, which would help balance the playing field a little. Actually, Selig also had the Wild Card, so he gets credit for two great ideas. I doubt realignment will pass.

-- Actor Erik Estrada's son is a pole vaulter at USC.

-- You get $1.4M for winning the Nobel Prize? Who knew?

-- How could the announcers on Houston-Memphis game not know a ball has to go all the way thru the hoop to be scored a basket? By the way, the missed dunk cost Memphis two points. They lost by one.

-- One of my boyhood heroes passed away this week; Merlin Olsen was not only a great defensive tackle, teaming with Deacon Jones on the great Ram defenses of late 60's, he also had himself a good career on TV.

        ************************************************** *

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a full day of basketball..........

        13) What a day; games tipped off just after noon, ended at 1:52am when Washington finished off Oregon State at Staples Center. All in all, there were 47 conference tournament games, the best full day of the season.

        12) Say goodbye to Arizona State, North Carolina, Arizona (which will miss NCAAs for first time in 25 years). UCLA will be next to go when California boots them back to Westwood Friday night.

        11) The top four teams in SEC East are 26-0 against the SEC West.

        10) Three of the four double-bye teams in Big East got beat Thursday, and only a lucky De'Sean Butler buzzer-beating bank shot saved West Virginia from OT against Cincinnati. Wild day in the Big Apple.

        9) Jackson State went 17-1 in horrible SWAC, so of course they lost in the first round of SWAC tourney, guaranteeing that league a spot in the play-in game in Dayton Tuesday night.

        8) Wake Forest lost five of its last six games; their big wins this year are Gonzaga by 2 points, then Xavier/Richmond/Maryland, all in overtime. If I root for the Deacons, I guess they're in, but I'd still be nervous Sunday.

        7) Bubble teams all over America are rooting like hell for UTEP to win Conference USA tournament; if Miners don't, a bracket buster does.

        6) Southern Mississippi won its first two C-USA tournament games, in part because they outscored opponents 44-9 fron the foul line.

        5) MAC's #1 seed Kent State lost to Ohio U, bad news for the MAC, which isn't getting two teams in the NCAAs.

        4) Marquette's 11 Big East road games were decided by total of 26 points.

        3) Who would have thought Baylor would go 3-0 vs Texas and Georgia Tech would go 3-0 against North Carolina this season?

        2) Florida probably needs to beat Mississippi State Friday to feel good about getting back to the tournament for first time in three years.

        1) Friday night is the best night of the college basketball season; 22 of the day's 30 games, all conference semifinal tilts, excellent entertainment.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Milwaukee Bucks (Pick, 195.5)

Okay, so we can’t stop dismissing the Milwaukee Bucks because right now they’re playing like the fourth best team in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee is 10-1 straight up over its last 11 games and an astounding (and I don’t use that word lightly) 21-3-1 against the spread since Jan. 18.

Oh yeah, and they beat the Cavs and Celtics in their last two games.

“Our confidence is high, but we’ve still got to stay grounded,” Bucks center Andrew Bogut told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “We still have a long way to go as a franchise.”

Bogut is making some noise in the field for Defensive Player of the Year thanks to his dominating play in the paint. The Australian has blocked four or more shots six times in the last 10 games.

Runs like these don’t last for too long. Oddmakers always adjust and end these types of streaks. Utah isn’t the best team to back on the road but the value on fading Milwaukee is growing.

            Pick: Bucks

Indiana Pacers at Boston Celtics (-9.5, 201)

It’s been a long time since Doc Rivers has been on the hot seat. The C’s head coach nearly got axed the year before the championship season but Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce saved his bacon. Two years later it doesn’t look that the trio can do it again.

Rivers seems unable to properly mesh the skills of his younger players with his declining vets.

“We’ve been reluctant to make many changes with our rotations and stuff like that,” the embattled coach told the Boston Herald following a blowout loss at home to the Grizzlies. “Maybe we have to think about that. Maybe not, but we have to think about it, because right now we’re just sketchy.”

Fading Boston at home against weak teams has been a profitable strategy all season but expect the Celtics play with a bit more pride Friday night.

            Pick: Celtics

What bettors need to know: Lakers at Suns
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns (-1, 214)

              Healing time

Phoenix has won 14 of its last 18 games after a 3-8 stretch in mid January. The Suns vaulted themselves back into fifth place in the Western Conference and had a nice rest heading into Friday’s meeting with the Lakers.

The Suns have had five days off, having not played since last Saturday’s home win over Indiana. That extra time has given key players some needed rest.

Guard Leandro Barbosa is expected to make his return from wrist surgery against the Lakers Friday after missing 21 straight games.

Barbosa said his right arm is still "a little weak" and there is some swelling.

"I'm very hungry to come back and help my teammates," he told reporters. "We'll see what happens."

Steve Nash and Goran Dragic also used this time to rehab their nagging injuries. Nash was dealing with back and abdominal injuries while Dragic was dealing with an ankle injury.

The NBA suspended Suns center Channing Frye one game without pay for his part in an altercation that took place last Saturday. They will be without their spark-plug off the bench and his 11.6 PPG and 5.2 RPG and his ability to stretch the defense (leads team in 3-pointers made).

              Tough days for L.A.

The Lakers hadn’t lost three straight games since acquiring Pau Gasol from Memphis in February of 2008, at least until a three-game road trip through Miami, Charlotte and Orlando ended that streak. They nearly made it four straight in a home game against the Toronto Raptors Tuesday.

But, of course, Kobe Bryant had the answer, nailing a game-winning baseline jumper with 1.9 seconds on the clock – his seventh game-winning shot this season. Although the Lakers won the game in exciting fashion, there was a somber mood in the locker room afterwards.

When asked if this team had the same consistent urgency of last season, coach Phil Jackson told the media, "I don't think so. We don't have that. Not that we can't reclaim it at some point. That's what we're trying to do."

"The urgency of playing well has not struck us yet,” Jackson added.

Other contenders now believe they can beat the Lakers, which is the first big step toward doing so.

"What's crazy about it is that these teams are getting confidence they can beat us," forward Lamar Odom told the press. "You can see it in their body language. There's a lot more talking. There's extra animation, even when they come here."

They are just 3-5 in their last eight games and just 8-9 overall this season against potential contenders (teams currently in the top four spots of Eastern and Western conference standing).

The Lakers, losers of four straight away from home, have three straight Western Conference road games on the upcoming schedule, starting with Phoenix Friday.

              Head to head

The last meeting between these two was in Phoenix on December 28. The Suns held a lead nearly the entire game (led by 22 points at one point) and shot 48.9 percent to beat the Lakers by 15 points.

The Lakers have won four of the last six meetings (all at home) by an average margin of 17.5 PPG. Phoenix has won two straight home games over the Lakers but has dropped seven of the last 10 vs. Los Angeles.

The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings but the Lakers are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Phoenix.

              Trends

Los Angeles is just 1-5 ATS in its last six Pacific division games and 2-8-1 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

Phoenix is 6-1 ATS in its last seven vs. the Western Conference and 4-0 ATS in its last four division games (NBA Pacific). The added rest may not be a good thing for the Suns, who are just 3-11-1 ATS in their last 15 games playing on three or more days rest.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at Buffalo Sabres (-200, 5.5)

After returning from the Winter Olympics and leading the Sabres to three straight wins, goalie Ryan Miller will take a much-needed rest tonight against the Wild.

But don't write off the Sabres, who will counter with veteran Patrick Lalime in the net. He will be going for his 200th career victory against the Wild, losers of three straight.

The change in the net appears to designed to give Miller a night off before returning to his home state of Michigan in Saturday's contest against Detroit, but it also makes good strategic sense.

With the Sabres playing three games in four days, including some key matchups to their playoff hopes, Lalime is the right call against the Wild. He is just 1-10 lifetime with a 4.85 goial-against average vs. the Wings but is 2-3-1 with a 2.64 GAA vs. the Wild.

"I'm looking forward to it," Lalime told the Buffalo News of his chance to hit No. 200 and contribute to the team's playoff run. "It's down the stretch for us and a chance to go back in there will be nice."

                      Pick: Sabres

Los Angeles Kings at Dallas Stars (-110, 5.5)

Here's one stop Kings goaltender Jonthan Quick doesn't want to make - the birth of his first child.

Quick, who has more victories than any other NHL netminder this season and owns 37 of the Kings' 39 wins, will not play tonight because he and his wife are expecting the arrival of their first born at any time.

That leaves Erik Ersberg (2-3-0-1) and AHL callup Jonathan Bernier to man the pipes in his absence. Ersberg is allowing more than a half-goal per game than Quick.

The Kings have gone over the total in four of their last five and the Stars have done so in their last five in a row. Without Quick in goal, make it six.

                      Pick: Over
