    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Big East begins its conference tourney, while the Maple Leafs meet the Bruins, and the Lakers play host to the Raptors.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up eight games on Tuesday, with Philadelphia at Indiana, the Clippers at Orlando, Houston at Washington, Miami at Charlotte, Utah at Chicago, Boston at Milwaukee, Sacramento at Portland, and Toronto at the Lakers. The Raptors (32-29 SU, 28-33 ATS) had star forward Chris Bosh back in the lineup on Sunday, but they still lost 114-101 at home to Philadelphia. The Lakers (46-18 SU, 27-35-2 ATS) have lost three straight games, and they were knocked off 96-94 in Orlando on Sunday. Kobe Bryant had 34 points in that loss.

Championship week continues in college basketball on Tuesday with 16 games on the schedule - including the four opening-round matchups in the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden (DePaul vs. South Florida, St. John's vs. Connecticut, Providence vs. Seton Hall, and Rutgers vs. Cincinnati). As well, Butler will take on Wright State in the championship game of the Horizon League tournament on Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs are undefeated both at home and in conference play on the season, and they beat the Raiders twice.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, nine games make up the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with the Islanders at Philadelphia, Nashville at Atlanta, Calgary at Detroit, Tampa Bay at Montreal, Florida at Minnesota, Vancouver at Colorado, Ottawa at Edmonton, Columbus at Anaheim, and Boston at Toronto. The 29-24-11 Bruins were edged 2-1 in Pittsburgh in their last game on Sunday, while the 20-33-12 Maple Leafs fell 3-1 to the Flyers in their Sunday matchup. The Bruins and Maple Leafs just met last Thursday, with Tim Thomas making 24 saves in a 3-2 Boston home shootout win.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Houston Rockets at Washington Wizards – Trevor Ariza (hip) has missed the team’s last seven games and is expected for a return on Tuesday although is listed as questionable. Kyle Lowry (ankle) has been out since Feb. 9 and is probable.

L.A. Clippers at Orlando Magic – Eric Gordon (leg) missed the Clips’ last game and is questionable.

Toronto Raptors at Los Angeles Lakers – Hedo Turkoglu (ankle) missed the team’s last game and is probable.

Ottawa Senators at Edmonton Oilers – Daniel Alfredsson (illness) missed the team’s last game and is probable. Goalie Brian Elliott (illness) is questionable. Filip Kuba (lower body) has missed two straight games and is doubtful.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Miami-Charlotte total has moved from an opener of 183.5 to 185. Four of the last five games in this series have gone over.

We’ve got a reverse spread movement in the Celtics-Bucks matchup. Boston opened as 1-point favorites and that number has swung to -1 in favor of Milwaukee.

In a rare occurrence, sportsbooks have bumped a hockey total up a half a goal. The Boston-Toronto total opened at 5 and a few shops are currently dealing 5.5.

      Who’s hot

The Magic are 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS over their last 10 games.

Edmonton goalie, Jeff Deslauriers, has given up one goal in his past two starts (both wins) while denying 50 shot attempts.

Dwyane Wade is averaging 33.3 points and 12 rebounds over his last three games, all wins.

      Who’s not

The Maple Leafs have dropped 5-of-6 games, surrendering 2.59 units on the moneyline.

The Clippers have lost three in a row SU and ATS.

      Key stat

9 – Number of lowest seed ever to win the Big East conference tournament. Syracuse became the first team to win four games in four days during that 2006 tourney and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Cincinnati is the No. 9 seed this year and is getting +5000 odds to win the Big East championship.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Portland Trail Blazers center Marcus Camby reinjured his ankle last Friday during practice and missed the team’s game Sunday. His replacement, Juwan Howard, registered eight points and seven rebounds in the game. Camby returned to practice on Monday, playing through the “pain”, and is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s affair against Sacramento.

      Notable quotable

"I see myself as defending myself as a player. I'm a man, just like they a man. If a man is talking to me this close to my face I'm going to say something back. He has to respect me just like I respect him. He was this close in my face - I can feel his lips touching my cheek.”

-- Wizards’ forward Andray Blatche said in regards to Kevin Garnett’s intimidation tactics that upset the four-year pro during Sunday’s loss to Boston.

      Tips and notes

      - The flu bug could be circulating through the Bulls locker room. Forward Luol Deng was sent home from practice on Monday with the illness and is questionable for Tuesday’s matchup versus Utah. If Deng doesn’t play it leaves Chicago’s frontcourt very thin with Joakim Noah already sidelined. There might be no way for Chicago to stop Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap down low if both big men are out.

      - Last Friday, Carlos Arroyo took Rafer Alston’s spot as the starting point guard in the Heat lineup. Since Arroyo entered the starting rotation, Miami is 2-0 SU and ATS with both wins coming against upper-echelon teams in Los Angeles and Atlanta. Arroyo has recorded 19 points and eight assists in the two recent starts and the Heat are 10-5 ATS overall this season when he starts.

      - The Bucks are on an absolute tear right now, having gone 10-0 ATS and 9-1 SU in their last 10 outings, and it doesn’t sound like they are going to let up. Last week Andrew Bogut said being a .500 team was “nothing to be proud about” and John Salmons admitted they were not satisfied and were “trying to move up in the standings.” Milwaukee moved a half game ahead of Toronto and into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings this weekend and more wins could be in store.

        Tuesday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Los Angeles Angels.......

        11) Mark Trumbo, 1B/OF-- 15 HR, 88 RBI in hitter-friendly Texas League LY; moved to OF because of Kendry Morales at 1B in LA.

        10) Trevor Bell, P-- Allowed 40 hits in 20 IP in big leagues, after only 71 IP in AAA-- is grandson of guy who was Bozo the Clown on TV.

        5) Garrett Richards, P-- Got drafted despite 6.57 ERA at Oklahoma; threw more strikes in 8 starts in rookie ball than he did in college.

        4) Trevor Reckling, LHP-- 22-17, 2.99 in 67 minor league starts, but had 75 walks, 14 wild pitches LY. 2.93 ERA in Texas League is great.

        2) Peter Bourjos, OF-- Dad made big leagues in 1980; played thru wrist injury at end of LY, so his stats suffered. Has had injury issues.

        1) Hank Conger, C-- Will stay in AA to work on his defense- he is the only 1st round draft pick Angels signed from 2005-2008.

Tuesday's List of 13: Baseball knowledge for a late winter day

I'm doing lot of studying, getting ready for the conference tournaments in college hoop; here is some baseball knowledge from Bill James Gold Mine to help get us ready for baseball season........
        13) Texas Ranger relief pitchers had a 6.14 ERA when they pitched with no days' rest, almost a run worse than any other team. CJ Wilson's ERA was 1.17 with a day off, 8.00 without. Frank Francisco: 2.41/9.00.

        12) James Shields allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in 82 innings and allowed 92 runs in those innings; Adam Wainwright allowed 82 guys to get on base leading off an inning, but only gave up 59 runs in those 82 innings. Shields had 58 IP of 10 or less pitches, 2nd-most in MLB.

        11) Ryan Howard was only big leaguer last year to hit 10+ homers each to left, center and rightfield; Toronto's Adam Lind had 12 to LF, nine to CF and 14 to RF, so he came close.

        10) Washington Nationals drew 503,174 less fans in their second season in their new ballpark than they did in the first; now that they have a new GM and some new players, hopefully they'll improve and attract some more fans this season.

        9) Mariners were last in AL in on-base percentage and runs scored, but they were 25-9 when Felix Hernandez started, thats how good he was.

        8) Only two batters swung at the first pitch 40+% of the time: Pablo Sandoval of the Giants (47.2%), Jeff Francoeur (43.8%).

        7) Petco Park in San Diego reduces run scoring 24%; no other ballpark in major leagues reduces it by more than 9%.

        6) Chase Headley has a career batting average of .288 in night games, .198 in day games. You're supposed to see the ball better in daylight.

        5) Joe Mauer hit .361 against pitchers with an ERA of 3.50 or better, so the best pitchers in baseball; Matt Holliday hit .360 against them.

        4) Of the Pirates' eight position players who started on Opening Day, only one (Andy LaRoche, 142) started more than 95 games. Phillies had six of their eight Opening Day starters start at least 150 games.

        3) Pirates had 42 games LY where they scored one run or were shut out.

        2) Oakland A's were outscored by two runs LY, but went 75-87; Seattle Mariners were outscored by 52 runs, but went 85-77. Go figure.

        1) The 2009 Mets had the bases loaded with two outs 68 times LY but scored only 19 runs, an amazingly bad number that explains a lot.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Milwaukee Bucks (-1, 188)

Boston’s “Three Party” of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett has turned into an “over the hill” social hangover.

All three members of the Big Three are posting their lowest scoring totals since their rookie seasons and Rajon Rondo is the only player in a Celtic uniform pulling his weight these days.

The aging squad struggled to defeat the lowly Wizards on Sunday, trailing by 13 with six minutes left, which was only four games removed from an embarrassing 104-96 home loss to the Nets.

"We've lost so many of these where we played poorly and lost," Doc Rivers said after the come-from-behind victory Sunday. "It was nice to play poorly and win. I just wish we could have played the first 40 minutes, like we played the last eight."

That was about the umpteenth time Rivers has used the word “poorly” to describe his team this year. Rondo said a few weeks ago that there hasn't been the same Celtic vibe and pride in the locker room as there has been in the last couple of seasons.

This is clearly not the same Boston squad that won the NBA championship two years ago and it has not been kind to bettors recently, going 11-18-1 ATS since the New Year.

And honestly, how can you bet against the Bucks at this point? Milwaukee has covered the spread in 10 straight and is 21-4 ATS in their last 25 games.

              Pick: Bucks

Miami Heat at Charlotte Bobcats (-3, 185)

Dwyane Wade and the Heat will almost certainly score more than the 65 points they posted against the Bobcats on Jan. 20.

In that dismal affair, Miami shot less than 30 percent from the floor, only hit 2-of-23 three-point attempts and was a smidgen better than 60 percent from the charity stripe as a team.

So was it an off-night for the Heat or was Charlotte’s defense that good? Maybe a little bit of both.

Miami (96.3) and Charlotte (94.8) rank No. 26 and 28 in the Association in scoring, but are also in the Top 5 in scoring defense with both teams surrendering fewer than 96 points per outing.

The Bobcats have played to five consecutive unders where only one total was posted at higher than 194. Charlotte held opponents to 91.0 ppg during that stretch.

Prior to three straight overs, where the Heat played up-tempo teams like Golden State and Atlanta (also one OT game with L.A.), the under had cashed in 9-of-10 Miami contests.

Points will come at a premium in the Southeast showdown on Tuesday.

              Pick: Under

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs (+110, 5)

The Bruins left Pittsburgh after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Penguins with more than just a bruised ego. Center Marc Savard got leveled from behind by Matt Cooke and fell unconscious to the ice. He eventually regained consciousness, but suffered a concussion and is doubtful for Tuesday’s game.

Head coach Claude Julien was incensed after the game, calling for Cooke’s suspension.

“A guy like that has to be suspended,” Julien told The Boston Globe. “That’s the way I see it because it’s an elbow to the head from the blind side, and that’s exactly the example they show, what we’ve got to get out of our game.

“We got a guy who’s got a concussion, our best player, and he’s going to be out for a while. He was on the ice for a bit and that’s unacceptable.”

Boston was already the NHL’s lowest scoring team with an average of 2.31 goals per game and things won’t be getting any better with Savard out of the lineup.

Goals should be hard to come by in this one. The Maple Leafs have only managed to light the lamp five times in their four games since the Olympic break and six of their last seven outings have gone under the total.

                        Pick: Under

Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche (+100, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks came from behind again and grabbed their 40th win of the season, beating the Nashville Predators 4-2 Sunday after trailing 2-1 in the third period.

Goalie Roberto Luongo bounced back from his atrocious performance against the Blackhawks Friday night, making 33 saves even though he directed a puck into the net with the knob of his stick for the second time in as many games.

“I couldn’t really believe that it happened again”, Luongo told The Vancouver Sun. “I’m just being mentally tested right now. I was able to put it behind me and keep playing.”

Vancouver sits at the top of the Northwest Division standings because of its ability to grind out wins. The Canucks lead the NHL with nine victories on the season when trailing after two periods and have totaled 82 third-period goals.

Expect them to do just that against the Colorado Avalanche.

                        Pick: Canucks
