    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, March 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals get a visit from the Stars, the Blue Jackets take on the Kings, and the Cavs play host to the Spurs in Cleveland.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has five games on tap for Monday, with Atlanta at New York, Golden State at New Orleans, Dallas at Minnesota, New Jersey at Memphis, and San Antonio at Cleveland. The Spurs (36-24 SU, 29-30-1 ATS) got past the Grizzlies by a score of 102-92 in their last game on Saturday; however San Antonio guard Tony Parker broke his hand and is out indefinitely. The Cavs (49-15 SU, 31-31-2 ATS) are coming off a 92-85 loss to the Bucks on Saturday, with LeBron James sitting out to rest a sore ankle. Antawn Jamison poured in 30 points in that defeat.

As well, a light Monday around college basketball kicks off the final pre-Madness week of the season. Included on the Monday slate are tournament semi-final matchups in both the Sun Belt and the Summit League, as well as championship games in the Colonial Athletic, Metro Atlantic, Southern, and West Coast conferences. The first major conference tourney of the year tips off on Tuesday, with the Big East staging its four opening matchups at Madison Square Garden.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the National Hockey League schedule for Monday, with Columbus at Los Angeles and Dallas at Washington. The 28-24-12 Stars were pounded 6-3 on the road by the Penguins in their last game on Saturday. Kari Lehtonen gave up six goals on 34 shots for Dallas in that loss, while Mike Ribeiro picked up a goal and an assist. The 44-13-8 Capitals blanked the Rangers in a 2-0 win in their Saturday outing. Eric Fehr and Eric Belanger scored for Washington in that contest, while Jose Theodore stopped all 30 shots.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers: Cavs forward LeBron James (ankle) and guard Daniel Gibson (personal) are questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

New Jersey Nets at Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies opened as 10-point favorites but the line quickly dropped to nine. Despite going 3-15 SU in their last 18, the Nets are 11-7 ATS during that stretch.

      Who's hot

Dallas Mavericks have won 11 in a row SU.

Over is 6-0 in Atlanta Hawks' last six.

San Antonio Spurs have won five of their last six SU.

      Who's not

Minnesota Timberwolves are 1-11 SU in their last 12.

Golden State Warriors are 1-6 SU in their last seven.

New Orleans Hornets are 1-6 SU in their last seven.

      Key stat

10 - The lowest margin of victory for the Connecticut women's basketball team during its current 70-game winning streak, which matched its own NCAA record for consecutive victories Sunday. The Huskies have won their last 70 by an average margin of 32 points.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

LeBron James missed his first game of the season Saturday, not surprisingly a bad loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Cavs coach Mike Brown said he was giving King James a rest but he did turn his ankle on Friday and reporters saw him limping in street clothes Saturday. Brown said he may sit James again tonight against the Spurs, who have won five of their last six. The Cavs aren't the same team without the King.

      Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers

      Notable quotable

"The New Jersey Nets are the best 7-55 team in NBA history."

--Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan on ESPN's "Sports Reporters" on Sunday.

      Tips and notes

The San Antonio Spurs' road trip got off to a rocky start when instead of flying out after Friday night's home game the players spent the night in their own beds after the team flight was grounded. The Spurs didn't fly out until around noon for Saturday night's game at Memphis but showed no ill-affects in the win, but it could catch up to them on their two-day turnaround to Cleveland.

Tracy McGrady is out for Monday's game against the Atlanta Hawks because his "body hurts" - introducing the rarely seen term "soreness" to the injury list. The Knicks thought they got a bargain when T-Mac came in from Houston and started lighting it up, but he is showing that he is damaged goods and unable to keep pace in the Knicks' up-tempo offense. Sergio Rodriguez, aka "Spanish Chocolate", will start in his place.

NASCAR traditionally uses the spring race at Atlanta Motorspeedway to test cars at the nearby Lockhead Martin wind tunnel and try to level the playing field. With Chevys dominating the first month of the season and an off-week before racing returns at Bristol, look for NASCAR to impliment some aerodynamic changes to benefit Ford, Dodge and Toyota teams.

        Monday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Kansas City Royals.......

        6) Tim Melville, P-- 7-7, 3.79 in 21 starts LY, took less money to sign with Royals because he's from Missouri. Wow.

        5) Eric Hosmer 1B-- $6M signing has been disaster so far; less athletic than they thought, also had eye/hand injuries. Will still be in A ball.

        4) Mike Moustakas, 3B-- Signed for $4M, had .297 OB% in Carolina League, which isn't what the Royals paid $4M for.

        3) Wil Myers, C-- 6-3, 190, so could get moved to anothger position, especially the way he hits. Been compared to Jayson Werth.

        2) Aaron Crow, P-- Made four starts in Arizona Fall League, likely to begin pro career in AA Texas League, a real hitters' league.

        1) Mike Montgomery LHP-- Booted off HS hoop team for getting too many technical fouls, not a good trait for a pitcher.

        ************************************************** ******************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy weekend.........

        13) Championship Week is one of the best of the year-- enjoy; some of the conference title games upcoming in next few days: Wright St-Butler, Quinnipiac-Robert Morris, Siena-Fairfield, Old Dominion-Wm & Mary, St Mary's-Gonzaga and Wofford-Appalachian State. Have fun!!!!

        12) Like to pass on good stories about celebrities; I'm told that one of the nicest guys in sports is Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, who spent a half hour after a recent Magic-Net game talking to a friend of mine and his young son, taking the time to make the night memorable for the kid. Both Van Gundy brothers seem like regular guys (thats a compliment).

        11) John Calipari's players play with confidence-- all of them; he started his seniors against Florida on Senior Day, but Gators still didn't score for the first 3:30 of the game. In that way, he reminds me of Billy Tubbs; his subs always came off the bench playing well, too.

        10) Major League Baseball fired three of its seven umpire supervisors, in response to blown calls during last year's playoffs.

        9) NBC has its Heads Up Poker tournament, which is a 64-team bracket, just like the NCAA hoop tournament; finals were going on Sunday night between Erik Seidel and Annie Duke. Doyle Brunson, the Babe Ruth of Poker, got to the Elite 8 before being eliminated by Dennis Phillips.

        8) I'm laughing too hard to type; just looked back at my favorite video clip of last hoop season, when referee Curtis Shaw tossed Rice mascot Sammy the Owl from a home game against Tulane. The great Pete Gillen is the analyst for the game on CBS College Sports, and I don't know, just makes me laugh every time I see it. Thank God for YouTube.

        7) Thursday's Ranger-Penguin game got a .96 rating in New York City; a Met spring training game that afternoon drew a 1.3. So much for the NHL getting a big post-Olympics ratings booth south of the border.

        6) Rumors are flying about who the Big 11 will add to become a 12-team lead so they can tap into the lucrative football playoff goldmine; Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel said this weekend that Illinois' cut from their Big 11 TV package is $12M more than what Mizzou gets from Big 12, so pencil in Missouri as a possibility to jump leagues, which would begin a domino effect of teams switching leagues.

        5) David Carr signed with the 49ers Sunday, which means the Giants need a backup QB; who better to do that than Jim Sorgi, who was backup QB for Peyton Manning the last few years? Sorgi is the Maytag Repairman of pro athletes. There was also a rumor the Giants wanted Jeff Garcia, so we will wait and see, but nobody rocks a ballcap and clipboard like Sorgi.

        4) WCC tournament sold out 8,300-seat Orleans Arena last night for the semifinal card; their idea is so successful that the WAC will also hold its tournament in the Orleans Arena next year, a week later than now. They are having their event in Reno this week. A neutral site is better, for sure.

        3) At some point this spring, I'm going to have a List of 13 involving the channels I'd have on my TV if I could order anything I want, a la cart. It would be safe to say a women's curling/tennis channel will be mentioned. If we can have mulitple soccer and multiple CSPAN channels, why not?

        2) Damn, did you see the #12 car flip over on its roof during the race in Atlanta Sunday? Those guys are warriors, NASCAR drivers- the freakin' guy jogged away from his car, after it flipped over on its roof!!! Wow.

        1) Bad teams have to overpay to get free agents to sign with them; Saints lost LB Scott Fujita to the Browns, because Cleveland gave him $14M for three years, with $8M of it guaranteed. Too good a deal to pass up.

                    Monday, March 8

Information on Monday's college basketball games........

Troy won last six games; they cruised Sunday, despite shooting 34.5% from floor; home teams won both Troy-WKU games this year, with the Trojans winning 77-69 at home (-1), losing 87-69 at WKU (+7). Western Kentucky is playing for third straight day; they've won eight games in a row, are also 8-0 in Sun Belt tourney, looking for 3rd straight title.

Denver is playing for third day in row, but its hard to prepare for their Princeton offense in just one day- Pioneers (+4.5) lost 64-59 at North Texas Feb 13. Denver won five of last six games since that loss, are 1-5 as Sun Belt dog (last nite was first cover). North Texas won last nine in a row; they were down 6 at half to UL-Monroe Sunday before rallying.

Siena trailed at half last two nites, pulled away in last 10:00 both days; Saints beat Fairfield twice during season, 81-73 (-4) on road Jan 16, 69-67 at home (-11.5) Feb 8; Stags were up 8 at half in that game. Fairfield won six of last seven games (lost at Vermont); they had a tougher game than Saints last night, are 2-4 against the spread as a MAAC underdog.

Old Dominion beat Wm & Mary twice this year, 58-55 (-5.5) on road, 61-42 at home (-12); 3-point loving Tribe was 15-55 from arc in those two losses, are 18-60 in first two tourney games, surviving a lousy half in both games. Monarchs won seven of last eight games, are 6-2 vs the spread in last eight as a favorite. Tribe is 7-2 as a CAA underdog.

Gonzaga pounded St Mary's 83-58 in WCC title game LY, then Gaels were left out of NCAAs; extra incentive for Gaels here, since Gonzaga is a lock for NCAAs. Zags (+4.5) won 89-82 in Moraga Jan 14, then won again at home, 80-61 (-5.5) Feb 11. Both teams had fairly easy wins in semis; St Mary's looked especially sharp in routing good Portland team.

Appalachian State (-7.5) won 77-76 at Wofford way back on Dec 7, the only series meeting this year; State won last two days by 10-23 points, making 12-24 from arc. Wofford won last two days by 12-19 points, as foes shot 33-35%; Terriers were 30-37 from line in win over WCarolina Sunday. Wofford looking for first-ever visit to NCAA tournament.
