    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, March 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kentucky hosts Florida, the Lakers take on the Magic, and the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series race in the Kobalt Tools 500.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up six games on Sunday, with Philadelphia at Toronto, Houston at Detroit, Washington at Boston, Oklahoma City at Sacramento, Portland at Denver, and the Lakers at Orlando. The Lakers and Magic have met just once since their NBA Finals matchup last season, with Los Angeles pulling out a 98-92 home win over Orlando on January 18 as a 6.5-point favorite. Shannon Brown had a team-high 22 points for Los Angeles off the bench in that game, while Kobe Bryant tossed in 11 points on the day. Dwight Howard led the Magic with a game-high 24 points in that loss, while Vince Carter was held to only nine points.

As well, there is one Top-10 team in action on the college basketball schedule for Sunday, with Florida at No. 3 Kentucky. The Wildcats (28-2 SU, 16-12 ATS) rolled to an 80-68 win over Georgia in their last game on Wednesday night; John Wall was good for 24 points in that contest for Kentucky. The Gators (20-10 SU, 13-12 ATS) were beaten 64-60 by Vanderbilt in their last game on Tuesday night, despite Vernon Macklin's 21 points. Florida and Kentucky faced off back on January 12, with the Wildcats picking up an 89-77 road victory in that matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are nine games on the NHL's schedule for Sunday, with Boston at Pittsburgh, Vancouver at Nashville, Calgary at Minnesota, Carolina at Atlanta, Buffalo at the Rangers, Toronto at Philadelphia, New Jersey at Edmonton, Montreal at Anaheim, and Detroit at Chicago. The Red Wings and Blackhawks last met on the ice on January 17, with Chicago pulling out a 4-3 shootout win on the road. Patrick Kane, Patrick Sharp, and Troy Brouwer had the Hawks' goals in that win, while Antti Niemi made 35 saves. Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, and Patrick Eaves replied for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard was good for 26 stops.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series offers up the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson, who is coming off consecutive race wins in Fontana and Las Vegas, is the 9/5 Vegas favorite to take the checkered flag once again on Sunday. Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin are next on the odds list at 6/1 and 8/1, respectively, with Tony Stewart at 17/2, and Denny Hamlin at 11/1. Last year's Kobalt Tools 500 winner, Kurt Busch, is farther back at 28/1 odds to win on Sunday, with '08 champ Kyle Busch pegged at 13/1 odds.

Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors – Chris Bosh (ankle, stomach) has missed the last seven games but is expected to play on Sunday (see note below).

Buffalo Sabres at New York Rangers – Marian Gaborik returned to action on Saturday and is expected to play in the game. Henrik Lundqvist (rest) got the day off Saturday but should be back in the net on Sunday.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Lakers-Magic spread has dropped from an opener of 3 in favor of Orlando down to 2 at most shops. The Lakers have won the last three in this series and backers can’t fathom L.A. losing three games in a row.

The total in the Houston-Detroit game has plummeted a point from its opener to 196.5. The last three games between these teams have gone over.

      Who’s hot

Boston College is 4-0 ATS and 3-1 SU in its last four games.

The Bruins have won five of their last six outings, earning 3.59 units on the moneyline.

      Who’s not

Michigan State is 0-6 ATS in its last six home games and 4-11 ATS at home this season.

The 76ers have dropped five straight and are 1-4 ATS over that stretch.

The Red Wings have lost 5-of-8 games, dropping 3.05 units on the moneyline in that span.

      Key stat

2-8 – Record for Michigan this season when Manny Harris is held under 18 points. The Wolverines are 1-3 ATS in the last four games Harris has failed to reach that number. In Harris’s three career games versus Michigan State, he’s scored 16, 7 and 11 points.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Portland Trail Blazers center Marcus Camby reinjured his ankle on Friday during practice. He had X-rays performed on his left ankle and fortunately for Portland, those came back negative. Camby missed practice on Saturday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game in Denver. If Camby is unable to go, head coach Nate McMillan said Juwan Howard would start at center.

      Games of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-2.5, 195)

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks (-170, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

“Oh yeah, man, he’s getting kind of old. I’m quicker than he is, so I just tried to take advantage of that.”

-- Toronto’s 23-year-old guard Sonny Weems said after scoring a career-high 20 points on Friday while matched up against Tracy McGrady, who is 30 years of age.

      Tips and notes

      - The injuries to Trevor Ariza and Kyle Lowry have allowed Kevin Martin to quickly find his role on the Rockets, but they have also created a tired backcourt. Coach Rick Adelman said those injuries have “made for long minutes for a number of guys and that's starting to show." Aaron Brooks is playing nearly every minute of every game and that caught up with him on Wednesday when he went 2-of-13 and the team only managed 81 points. A tired Houston squad will be in a back-to-back situation on Sunday.

      - It appears Phil Jackson might begin to limit the minutes of his key players. After the Lakers lost to Charlotte on Friday, Jackson said Paul Gasol was “weak and sickly" and that he would have to monitor the center’s playing time. Gasol might not be the only one getting rest as Jackson said, “I'll start to work the bench a little more and see if I can't spell some minutes for these guys.”

      - How do you feel a day and a half after having a stomach virus and being dehydrated? Probably not too well and definitely not well enough to play in a 48-minute NBA game. But that’s exactly what Chris Bosh will try to do Sunday. After spending time in a hospital on Friday night and being injected with intravenous fluids you can’t expect Bosh to be 100 percent versus Philadelphia. Andrea Bargnani got three staples in back of his neck on Friday too so the Toronto big men are hurting.

        Sunday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Houston Astros.......

        25) Collin DeLome, OF-- Hit 20 HRs in AA last year, hit .300 across river from me at Tri-City in '07, when he was highest Astro draft pick to sign (5th round). Production hasn't matched his athletic ability.

        21) Brian Bogusevic, OF-- Converted P hit .271 with 53 RBI at AAA last year; needs to show more power to get to big leagues.

        20) Koby Clemens, C/OF-- Yes, its his son; had huge year in hi-A LY, will go up to AA. Not sure if he'll stay a catcher or move to OF.

        13) JB Shuck OF-- Tremendous name; Ohio State alum has .310 BA in his 819 career AB. Will be a LF in AA this season.

        11) Tommy Manzella, SS-- Defensive whiz who will start the season as Astros' starting SS-- can he hit enough to keep the job?

        1) Jason Castro, C-- .295 hitter in minor leagues; could wind up behind plate at Minute Maid Park before this season is over.

        ************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday......

        13) Weird Senior Day for Arizona's Nic Wise, who played for a different head coach in each of his four seasons with the Wildcats; he played for both head coaches in his Senior Day game, Sean Miller this year and USC coach Kevin O'Neill two years ago. Wise hit the game-winning layup with 0:01.2 left in the second OT, as Arizona beat the Trojans by a hoop.

        12) A kid named Kyle Kuric, averaging 3.5 ppg for Louisville, scored all 22 of his career-high points in a 13:41 span of the second half, as Cards pulled away for a surprising 78-68 win over Syracuse in the last college basketball game played in historic Freedom Hall.

        11) Halftime score: Duke 53, North Carolina 26. Tar Heels will be a very interesting team to watch early next season, to see if this year was a fluke or the beginning of a down cycle.

        10) Strangest first round of a conference tournament is in Sun Belt, where they had two games going on at once in the same town (Hot Springs, AR). Tournament will be more manageable next year, with New Orleans going down to D-III, leaving the league with an even dozen schools.

        9) West Virginia looked like the worst team on earth for the first 8:00 of their game at Villanova, but they're mentally/physically tough and wound up beating the Wildcats 68-66 in OT, as De'Sean Butler was huge in OT.

        8) Siena's Fran McCaffery pulled his starters and sent them to the locker room in the last minute of his team's win over Manhattan, then refused to say anything about it, other than something about fearing for the safety of his players, after a rough/chippy/chirpy win over the Jaspers. Its not the first time he's pulled this stunt-- he's done a great job with the Siena team, making them nationally visible, but not letting your team shake hands in its own gym is bush league. Who exactly was going to attack them?

        7) Siena fans are concerned McCaffery could bolt Siena for a Big East job, but could you imagine him coaching against West Virginia? I can't.

        6) Someone in MAAC office should encourage Niagara to wear purple in their TV games, instead of gray. One team wearing white, the other gray isn't the best for TV viewers.

        5) Let me get this straight; Jose Reyes was flown back to New York to get his thyroid problem checked out, but Monday is the earliest he can get looked at? No doctors in New York work on Saturdays? It'll take another 48 hours to get the test results, so Reyes is out at least another week. If he ever does get to play again, at least he'll be well rested.

        4) Jack Youngblood could never have played baseball; he's way too tough. Right now, of the 25 guys on my fantasy baseball team, five already have red crosses next to their name, and that doesn't include Hideki Matsui, who hasn't played yet because his knees are so sore. Exhibition games have been going on for four freakin' days. Good grief.

        3) Um, probably not the best weekend to be Ben Roethlisberger's agent, or the coach of the Steelers, for that matter.

        2) Isiah Thomas' first season at Florida International ends with his ninth loss in row, but Panthers did beat the spread in six of last seven games, so at least Charles Barkley will think he did a good job.

        1) Congratulations to Winthrop, East Tennessee State, Murray State and Cornell, who all advanced to NCAA tournament with wins on Saturday. Winthrop actually won its tournament on the opponents' home floor as a 10-point underdog, so Saturday was an especially good day for them.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors (and perhaps all those teams waiting with piles of free agent cash) were dealt a big scare Friday night when All-Star forward Chris Bosh was rushed to hospital.

According to the team, Bosh was suffering from severe stomach pains and was taken for evaluation after he couldn’t even stand due to the pain. The Raptors took the floor without their star player, defeating the New York Knicks 102-96 but failed to cover as 8-point home favorites.

“He went to the hospital just prior to the game just to get checked,” coach Jay Triano told the Toronto Star. “We don’t anticipate it’s anything serious, they just wanted to do some tests and hopefully ..... he’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”

Toronto had already been without Bosh for six games due to a sprained ankle. The team went just 2-4 in that span and managed to cover the spread in just one of those contests.

With Bosh in the lineup, the Raptors have won three straight meetings with the Sixers. The most recent was a 104-93 win at the ACC as 5.5-point favorites. Bosh scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.

              Pick: Toronto

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets (-6, 206.5)

The Raptors weren’t the only team receiving bad news Friday night. The Denver Nuggets learned that starting power forward Kenyon Martin may need surgery to correct a partial tear of his left patella tendon.

Martin sat out Friday’s win over the Indiana Pacers and has played sparingly in the past month. The former No. 1 overall draft pick, who has already had multiple knee surgeries, denied the claim from Yahoo! Sports writer Marc Spears that an unanimous source told him about Martin’s condition.

"I don't know where Marc Spears got that from, man,'' Martin told FanHouse following Friday's game. "It's a little more than tendinitis, but I don't know if it's torn. I had an MRI (on Thursday). They looked at it. There's a lot of speculation going on. ... It's more serious than tendinitis but I don't know yet.''

Whether Martin goes under the knife or not, having him on the bench is a big blow to the Nuggets interior defense. He leads the team in rebounding with 9.6 boards per night and is assigned to opponents’ top forwards – like Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge, who Martin limited to just 10 points when these teams met on Christmas Day.

If the Denver's rush to find a replacement big man is any indication of Martin’s current health, the Blazers frontcourt should have a field day Sunday night.

              Pick: Portland

Game of the day: L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-2.5, 195)

                Road woes

The Lakers (46-17, 26-34-3 ATS) are in the midst of a tough stretch in which they play 11 of 14 games on the road through the end of March. To say it has not gotten off to a good start would be an understatement.

Los Angeles fell at Miami 114-111 in overtime Thursday before getting handled by the Charlotte Bobcats 98-83 Friday night. Not surprisingly, the Lakers were road favorites in both contests (-5 against Miami, -3.5 against Charlotte).

“On the road it's a different style of play, a different game entirely,” Kobe Bryant told reporters. “We can't take the game we play here at home and take it on the road. We'll have to adjust a little bit. You've got to keep your energy up, obviously keep the intensity, but on the road you really have to execute.”

Easier said than done for an L.A. squad that is just 17-12 (11-17-1 ATS) away compared to 29-5 (15-17-2 ATS) as hosts.

                Magic men

The Magic (43-20, 33-29-1 ATS) have won four in a row and six of seven to stay atop the Southeast Division, two games ahead of the similarly-hot Atlanta Hawks. A big reason for Orlando’s success is the play of a healthy Jameer Nelson.

Over the past 10 games, Nelson is averaging 16 points and more than seven assists while committing fewer than 2.5 turnovers. Those numbers are similar to his pre-injury (shoulder) performance last season, when he was named an All-Star but got hurt prior to the game.

“I think I'm back right now,” Nelson explained after a Monday night win over Philadelphia. “I think I can play better…attacking, driving, creating problems for other teams looking for my shot or somebody else's shot; just trying to get everybody involved.”

“Everything's so wide open when he gets it going. He can finish or feed the open guys. It can make for easy games,” added Vince Carter.

                Talk to the hand

Los Angeles guard Ron Artest sprained his left thumb in the loss to Miami, adding to the list of Lakers who have sustained hand injuries this season. Kobe (broken right index finger), Shannon Brown (sprained right thumb), Jordan Farmar (sprained left hand ligament) and Lamar Odom (finger) have all been down that route.

“It seems to be a hand-injury year,” coach Phil Jackson said on Friday.

Artest played in Saturday’s loss to Charlotte, but he contributed only two points and missed 8-of-9 shots. Aside from their long-standing injuries (Sasha Vujacic has a shoulder injury and Luke Walton is dealing with a bad back), the Lakers should be at full strength Sunday.

Orlando, meanwhile, has no injuries to report.

                Prior engagement

The Lakers and Magic have met once this season, back on January 18 in Los Angeles. In the first encounter between the two teams since the 2009 NBA Finals, Orlando went into L.A. as a 6-point underdog and came up exactly six points short, losing 98-92. The Lakers outscored their opponents 34-24 in the fourth quarter to rally for victory.

Dwight Howard scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and also grabbed 12 rebounds in Orlando’s losing effort. Kobe finished with just 11 points while going a dismal 4-of-19 from the field, but L.A. had six players in double-figures, including 22 from Brown. The Lakers also turned the ball over a mere five times.

                Trending topics

Los Angeles is a woeful 1-7-1 ATS in its last nine games overall. The Lakers are also 0-4 ATS in their last four outings as visitors.

Orlando is 3-1 ATS in its last four overall and 3-0 ATS in its last three home contests.

The Lakers (28-34-1 O/U) have been a decent under play this season while the under has definitely been the way to go with the Magic (25-38 O/U). The under is 9-3 in L.A.’s last 12 games overall and 7-1 in Orlando’s last eight overall. The under is also 4-0 in the Magic’s last four games as hosts.

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators (+100, 5.5)

The Nashville Predators may have had their three-game winning streak snapped with a loss to the Detroit Red Wings Friday night but the good times continued to roll for total bettors.

Nashville has topped the total in five straight games and in eight of its past 10 contests including Friday’s 5-2 defeat to Detroit which toppled the 5.5-goal number set by sportsbooks.

The Predators’ blueline was dealt a blow in that loss when top defenseman Shea Weber left the game in the first period with an arm or hand injury. Weber was hit from behind by Tomas Holmstrom and went down in a scrum in the corner, possibly getting stomped on by the skate of Johan Franzen.

"It was something that started (on Thursday) and I started playing through it, but I reaggravated it (Friday),'' Weber told The Tennessean.

With Weber listed as day-to-day and the high-flying Canucks coming to town (fourth in the NHL in scoring), total bettors are licking their chops. Vancouver has also favored over betters in recent games, playing beyond the total in five straight outings.

                      Pick: Over

New Jersey Devils at Edmonton Oilers (+185, 5.5)

Is New Jersey Devils star goaltender Martin Brodeur suffering from an Olympic hangover?

The legendary netminder’s soft performance at the 2010 winter games has apparently carried over to the second half of the NHL season.

In his first two games back off the two-week break, Brodeur nearly ruined a solid defensive effort from his blueline by giving up three goals on 20 shots to the San Jose Sharks Tuesday (New Jersey won 4-3). Then the future Hall of Famer got burned by the Calgary Flames for five goals in a 5-3 loss Friday evening.

"He could've stopped a few pucks that came to him," Devils coach Jacques Lemaire told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. "But, again, when there is a big crowd in front of the net it's always hard to see a puck coming."

Brodeur echoed his coach’s critical comments, telling the media he has had a tough time controlling rebounds and that he hasn’t really felt comfortable between the pipes.

"Yeah, it doesn't happen too often," Brodeur said. "Lately the puck isn't hitting me. On the last goal (Matt) Stajan just fans on it and it still goes through everything and goes through my legs. These bounces are happening right now. I just have to practice more and get myself in a better frame of mind."

New Jersey doesn’t score enough (2.3 goals per game -23rd in the NHL) to make up for an off night or two from its goaltender. Even with the lowly Edmonton Oilers on tap, who won the most recent meeting with the Devils, a less-than-perfect Brodeur could prove costly.

                      Pick: Edmonton
