              Friday's Tipsheet

It feels like mismatch Friday in the NBA with five teams laying points on the road. There are 11 games for bettors to choose from including the Hornets and Spurs getting together in San Antonio. Our friends at ASA have a comprehensive preview of that game right here. The only road favorite playing with no rest is the Lakers, as the Champs head to Charlotte to battle the Bobcats.

Lakers (46-16 SU, 26-33-3 ATS) at Bobcats (28-31 SU, 31-28 ATS)

The Bobcats are free-falling fast by dropping five of six, while sitting on the outside looking in inside the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Lakers invade Charlotte, coming off Thursday's overtime loss in Miami.

Larry Brown's squad is just 1-5 ATS and 2-4 SU the last six games at home following eight straight victories on their court from December through end of January. The Bobcats have struggled to put the ball in the basket, scoring 100 points or less in 12 of their last 13 games.

The Lakers are 4-2 ATS the previous six games with no rest, while owning a 5-4-1 ATS mark since late January as road 'chalk.' Phil Jackson's team has had problems covering as short favorites, compiling a 2-6 ATS ledger when laying 4 ½ points or less.

The Bobcats cashed as 10 ½-point underdogs on the last leg of a six-game road trip in Los Angeles, covering in a 99-97 loss. Charlotte has been successful in this series with covers in nine of the last ten matchups. The Lakers have dropped three of the last four road meetings with the Bobcats, including a 94-84 setback last season as 5 ½-point favorites.

Celtics (38-21 SU, 23-35-1 ATS) at Sixers (22-38 SU, 26-34 ATS)

These two old rivals meet up for the final time this season as Philadelphia tries to snap a four-game skid. The Celtics received a nice wake-up call from the Nets, with Doc Rivers' club winning two straight after last Saturday's embarrassing home loss to New Jersey.

Boston is 3-10 ATS the last 13 games off a cover, as the C's are fresh off SU/ATS wins over Detroit and Charlotte. A five-game 'over' streak came to a halt in Wednesday's 104-80 thrashing of the Bobcats, the first game the Celtics have allowed less than 100 points since giving up 76 points at Portland on February 19.

The Sixers have dropped four straight games to four substantial opponents (Suns, Lakers, Magic, and Hawks), while covering only once in a nine-point setback to Los Angeles. Philadelphia has struggled in the home underdog role all season with a 2-9 ATS mark, with both wins coming over Texas teams (Mavs and Spurs).

Philadelphia managed an upset of Boston the last time these teams met up at TD Banknorth Garden, 98-97 as 11 ½-point 'dogs on December 18. The Sixers picked up another cover as double-digit 'dogs at Boston on November 25 in a 113-110 loss. Boston drilled Philadelphia in early November at the Wachovia Center, 105-74, while easily cashing as seven-point road favorites.

Bucks (31-29 SU, 39-21 ATS) at Wizards (21-37 SU, 24-32-2 ATS)

The hottest ATS team in the league right now resides in Milwaukee as the Bucks have covered eight straight games. The latest cover came on Wednesday at home against the Wizards, 100-87 as ten-point 'chalk.' These two teams meet up again at the Verizon Center for the back end of a home-and-home.

The road has been the place to back Scott Skiles' squad recently, as Milwaukee is cashing at a furious pace with covers in 11 of its last 12 away from the Bradley Center. The road favorite role is perfect for the Bucks this season, compiling a 4-0 SU/ATS mark in wins over the Nets (twice), Pistons, and Pacers.

Washington was riding a nice ATS streak with covers in six straight games during February, but the Wizards are just 1-3 SU/ATS the last four contests. Since the dumping of Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison at the trade deadline, the Wizards have pulled off outright home underdog wins over the Nuggets and Bulls. However, Washington has slipped up in its last two home games with losses to the Grizzlies and Knicks.

Milwaukee is looking for the season split after Washington stole the first two meetings, but that was with Butler, Jamison, and Gilbert Arenas in the lineup. The Bucks are a sterling 13-3 ATS when laying 4 ½ points or less, while winning and covering ten straight road games against teams coming off a loss.

Magic (42-20 SU, 33-28-1 ATS) at Nets (6-54 SU, 22-37-1 ATS)

This will seem like a scrimmage for the Magic, who host the Lakers in an NBA Finals rematch on Sunday. Orlando makes the trip to New Jersey to battle a Nets team that is 0-5 ATS the last five as a home underdog, while winning just ten percent of their games.

It's clear that the Nets are on the fast track to possibly setting an NBA record for futility with fewest wins in a season (9). New Jersey has fared much better ATS-wise on the road than at home, while tallying less than 100 points in each of its last ten home contests.

The Magic has covered five of their last seven as road favorites, but has been listed as 'chalk' away from Amway Arena in this range only once this season. You guessed it, it came at New Jersey in late October as the Magic barely cashed as 9 ½-point favorites over the Nets, 95-85.

New Jersey is a profitable 12-9 ATS as a double-digit underdog this season, but is just 3-7 ATS the last ten meetings with Orlando.

Thunder (36-24 SU, 35-25 ATS) at Clippers (25-36, 28-32-1 ATS)

Oklahoma City is coming off its worst loss all season as the Thunder tries to bounce back against the Clippers. L.A. has dropped three of four following a 26-point drubbing at the hands of Phoenix on Wednesday.

OKC fell by 29 at Denver on Wednesday, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Thunder has been tremendous off a SU loss this season, putting up an 18-5 ATS mark. Scott Brooks' team has responded well off a poor offensive showing, as OKC is 8-3 ATS the last 11 games after scoring less than 100 points.

Despite the loss to the Suns, the Clippers are 4-1 SU/ATS the last five at home, while owning three outright victories as underdogs. The 'over' has been a profitable play at Staples Center since the All-Star Break, hitting it at a 4-1-1 pace the last six at home for the Clips.

The road team has won each meeting this season, with the Thunder claiming an 83-79 decision in Los Angeles as two-point underdogs in mid-November. The Clips got revenge four days later with a 101-93 win at the Ford Center as 5 ½-point 'dogs.

                Friday's Game of the Day

San Antonio Spurs vs. New Orleans Hornets (ESPN, 9:30 p.m. EST)

                New Orleans Dwindling Playoff hopes

New Orleans is trailing the Portland Trail Blazers by four games for the eighth and final playoff spot and with their tough schedule ahead, it will be difficult for the Hornets to garner that 8th and final playoff slot. The Hornets are currently 10th in the West looking up at Memphis and Portland in the standings.

They have lost five of their last six and have upcoming games against Western Conference playoff contenders San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Denver before going on a five-game road trip that includes games at Phoenix and Utah. And they will have to continue making a playoff push without All-NBA point guard Chris Paul, who is still recovering from knee surgery. "Still no clue when I'm going to come back or anything," Paul said Wednesday. "But it's getting better every day." The Hornets have gone 6-10 in his absence.

Rookie guards Marcus Thornton and Darren Collison have done their best to pick up Paul’s 20.4 PPG and 11.5 APG during his continued absence. Thornton is averaging 25.8 PPG and 4.8 RPG in the last five games while Collison is averaging 21.5 PPG and 9.7 APG in his previous 10. Without Paul, their depth is running low and the Hornets bench ranks last in the NBA in points per game.

                Rested Spurs

The Spurs got a nice rest this week, having not played since their Monday match-up with this same Hornets team. They had three games in a four game span Friday through Monday, winning the ladder of the two against Phoenix and New Orleans. The added rest this week and their first winning streak in two weeks worked wonders on the Spurs' collective psyche.

"These were nice back-to-back wins for us," Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said of Sunday's three-point win over Phoenix and Monday night's drubbing of the Hornets. "(Shooting) has been a real weakness of ours this year. We've shot very poorly and it's cost us a lot of games. It was nice to see people knock down some shots tonight."

The Spurs made 50.6 percent of their shots against the Hornets, making more than they missed for a second consecutive game, led by 2nd year guard George Hill. Hill recorded his sixth team-leading point total in the last 13 games with a 23 point performance on Monday.

“He's been good for us at both ends of the court in his sophomore year,” he said. “We're not surprised when he makes shots or does what he did (against the Hornets).”

Antonio McDyess had to be helped off the AT&T Center court Sunday after hyperextending his left knee and Keith Bogans left the floor in the third quarter on Monday after dislocating the ring finger on his left hand. Both were re-examined by team doctors. In both cases, no structural damage was found, and both are expected to be available for Friday's home game against the Hornets.

                Head to Head

These two met on Monday, San Antonio not only sustained a lead that had stretched to 10 in the opening moments of the fourth quarter but eventually extended it as the Spurs came away with a 106-92 victory. San Antonio's deeper supply of firepower -- six players scored in double figures, led by George Hill, who had 23 -- was just a little more than the Hornets could handle, who had five players in double digits, led by rookie Marcus Thornton, who had 30.

San Antonio has won all three meetings this season against the 'bugs' by 14, 7, and 17 points (all ATS victories). The home team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the Hornets are just 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings in San Antonio.

New Orleans won nine of their 12 road games from January 2nd to February 6th, but has dropped four straight road games since and hasn’t won at San Antonio in the last four opportunities.

                Key Statistical Information

                PPG
                New Orleans: -1.7
                San Antonio: +4.1

                FG%
                New Orleans: -1.9%
                San Antonio: +1.4%

                Rebounding
                New Orleans: -2.1
                San Antonio: +2.7

                Trends

New Orleans is 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 road games but just 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Western Conference.

San Antonio is just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a win and just 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
