    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, March 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Wings take on the Predators, while the Raptors host the Knicks, and the Pistons look for a win against the Cavaliers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are 11 games on the NBA hardwood on Friday night, including Detroit at Cleveland. The Pistons and Cavaliers haven't met since November 25, when LeBron James and company pulled out a 98-88 road win. James led the way with 34 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists for the Cavaliers in that contest, while Mo Williams had 14 points to go along with eight assists. Rodney Stuckey had 25 points in the loss for the Pistons, while Charlie Villanueva had 19 points.

Also on the NBA's schedule for Friday: the Lakers at Charlotte, Milwaukee at Washington, Boston at Philadelphia, Golden State at Atlanta, Orlando at New Jersey, Sacramento at Dallas, Indiana at Denver, New Orleans at San Antonio, Oklahoma City at the Clippers, and New York at Toronto. The Raptors hope that star forward Chris Bosh (ankle injury) can get back on the floor for Friday night; Toronto has lost four straight games to sit at 31-28 SU and 28-31 ATS this year.

Mid-major tournament games populate the college basketball schedule for Friday, along with one major-conference game between St. John's and DePaul at Allstate Arena. The Red Storm (15-14 SU, 12-14 ATS) have lost three straight games, falling 85-66 to Syracuse in their last outing on Tuesday. The Blue Demons (8-21 SU, 14-9-2 ATS) have lost 11 games in a row to sit in the basement of the Big East standings. DePaul lost 63-59 to South Florida in their last contest, and they also fell 67-47 when they played St. John's on January 17.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are five games on the National Hockey League schedule for Friday, with Philadelphia at Buffalo, Vancouver at Chicago, New Jersey at Calgary, Minnesota at Edmonton, and Nashville at Detroit. The Red Wings last hosted the Predators back on January 29, with Detroit pulling out the 4-2 home win. Jason Williams, Nicklas Lidstrom, Drew Miller, and Henrik Zetterberg all scored for the Wings in that contest, while Jimmy Howard stopped 46 of 48 Nashville shots. Francis Bouillon and Shea Weber had the Preds goals in the loss.

Bettor's best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

New York Knicks at Toronto Raptors – Chris Bosh (ankle) has missed the team’s last six games but is expected to return on Friday. Andrea Bargnani (illness) is probable for the game.

Sacramento Kings at Dallas Mavericks – Andres Nocioni will miss the game after being suspended for a DUI charge. Jason Terry (face) is out indefinitely after having surgery Friday (see below).

Line to keep an eye on

The Pacers-Nuggets spread has come down a point to 10.5 at some shops after opening at 11.5 in favor of Denver. Indiana is 1-4 ATS in its last five outings.

      Who’s hot

The Flyers are 7-3 in their last 10 games and have defeated Buffalo in two straight.

Denver’s J.R. Smith is averaging 16.7 ppg over his last six in only 27 minutes of action.

Sacramento is 4-0 ATS in its last four outings and 3-1 SU, with two wins as dogs of 7 points or more.

      Who’s not

Fordham has dropped 20 consecutive games with eight of those losses coming by more than 20 points.

The Bobcats are 4-6 SU in their last 10 games and 2-8 ATS during that stretch.

      Key stat

24 – Number of games Hawks’ sixth man Jamal Crawford has scored 20 or more points this season, which leads the NBA. Crawford gives Atlanta a legit scoring presence off the bench and is the leading Sixth Man of the Year candidate.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mavericks’ sixth-man Jason Terry will be out for at least a few games after having surgery on Friday to repair the orbital bone around his left eye. Terry was struck by the elbow of Minnesota’s Corey Brewer during Wednesday’s game and his eye was swollen shut afterward. J.J. Barea and Rodrigue Beaubois are expected to see extended playing time in Terry’s absence. The reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year was averaging 34 minutes, 17.0 points and 3.8 assists off the bench. Terry said in a text he won’t be out “long” but another report said it could be 7-10 weeks.

      Game of the day

New Orleans Hornets at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 197)

      Notable quotable

"It's been the most difficult time of my life, no two ways about it. If I had known something was going on, the whistle would have been blown. Of course I'm mad at him, why would you not be? I'm close with his wife and he's got two lovely children and he's let them down. (But) when a guy's having a tough time, it's not up to me to beat him with a stick right now. He's getting enough grilling from everybody else.”

-- Tiger Woods’ caddie Steve Williams said in regards to the ongoing Tiger saga.

      Tips and notes

      - European golfer Lee Westwood had never played the Honda Classic but after a suggestion from his agent, entered the tournament field this year. After seeing the course first hand, Westwood’s agent said, “Why aren't you here? This golf course would suit you down to a tee." So far so good as Westwood is 1-under par, four strokes off the lead after Round 1. He is getting +1615 odds to win the tourney going into Friday.

      - Raptors coach Jay Triano said Andrea Bargnani has been affected by Chris Bosh’s absence, saying defenses have keyed in on him more. Bosh is expected back Friday and apparently has an agenda. He said, “You’re going to be able to tell every time I step on the court how long I’ve been waiting on this.” Triano also said the team will go back to plays “more familiar” to the players with Bosh on the floor and that “most of the stuff will go through him.” Bosh and the Raps could be poised for a big Friday night.

      - The Nuggets medical staff gave Carmelo Anthony an I.V. on Wednesday because of lingering fatigue. Carmelo said he wasn’t feeling well and, "My body has started shutting down on me that last week. It’s fatigue and having no energy." The I.V. must have helped as Melo dropped in 30 that night, but prior to the extra juice Anthony had only posted a 22.5 ppg average over his last six and was shooting very poorly.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Denver Nuggets (-11, 218)

You know the old saying - if you have two quarterbacks, you really don’t have one at all?

Well, that wisdom applies to the Pacers.

Indiana coach Jim O’Brien can’t decide whether to start T.J. Ford or Earl Watson. Both point guards are inconsistent and neither player does a good job of making plays for anyone not named Danny Granger.

The Pacers star forward had 30 points against the Blazers but got little help from his mates.

"You don't see many times when one guy on your team has double figures and nobody else cracks double figures," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien told the Indianapolis Star following his club’s 102-79 loss to the Blazers. "Danny had a good game and we turned the ball over too many times."

The Pacers have a number of players that can shoot but Granger is really the only guy who can create his own shot. If Ford and Watson aren’t penetrating and creating easy shots for their teammates, it usually means a long night for Indiana fans.

Denver is notorious for losing to bad teams but the Pacers shouldn’t be much of a problem for George Karl’s club.

          Pick: Nuggets

Milwaukee Bucks at Washington Wizards (+4.5, 190.5)

This might be the year that we finally see the Bucks in the playoffs again. Milwaukee is 8-2 straight up and 9-1 against the spread over its last 10 games and is tied with Chicago for the sixth best record in the Eastern Conference.

"I think we believe in ourselves as a team," Bucks guard Luke Ridnour told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "We believe we can play with anybody. We've got to take that mind frame and try to make the most of this next month and a half."

While the playoff prospects look promising for Milwaukee, not all of its players are confident in their own play. Rookie point guard Brandon Jennings is shooting just 27 percent from the field over his last six games.

"My offense is just terrible right now," Jennings said after his team’s latest win over the Wizards on Wednesday. "I just went to the defensive end, and I was just trying to put pressure on the guys and make a turnover. I got an 8-second call (violation) tonight, and you really don't see that much in the NBA."

Jennings' shooting should improve with a second go-around against the Wizards.

          Pick: Milwaukee

Game of the day: New Orleans at San Antonio
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 197)

            Slim to none

New Orleans is trailing the Portland Trail Blazers by four games for the eighth and final playoff spot and with a tough schedule ahead, it will be difficult for the Hornets to sneak into the postseason.

They have lost five of their last six and play seven of their next nine on the road. They will have to continue making a playoff push without All-NBA point guard Chris Paul, who is still recovering from knee surgery.

"Still no clue when I'm going to come back or anything," Paul said Wednesday. "But it's getting better every day."

The Hornets are 10-14 straight up and 14-9-1 against the spread without CP3 in the lineup this season.

Rookie guards Marcus Thornton and Darren Collison have done their best to pick up game in Paul’s absence. Thornton is averaging 25.8 PPG and 4.8 RPG in the last five games while Collison is averaging 21.5 PPG and 9.7 APG in his previous 10.

Without Paul, New Orleans’ depth is running low and its bench ranks last in the NBA in points per game.

            Rested Spurs

The Spurs haven’t played since their Monday match against New Orleans. The added rest this week and their first winning streak in two weeks worked wonders on the Spurs' collective psyche.

"These were nice back-to-back wins for us," Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said of Sunday's three-point win over Phoenix and Monday night's drubbing of the Hornets. "(Shooting) has been a real weakness of ours this year. We've shot very poorly and it's cost us a lot of games. It was nice to see people knock down some shots tonight."

The Spurs made 50.6 percent of their shots against the Hornets and their efficient offense is keyed by George Hill. The second-year guard recorded his sixth team-leading point total in the last 13 games with a 23-point performance on Monday.

“He's been good for us at both ends of the court in his sophomore year,” Popovich told reporters. “We're not surprised when he makes shots or does what he did (against the Hornets).”

Antonio McDyess had to be helped off the AT&T Center court Sunday after hyperextending his left knee and Keith Bogans left the floor in the third quarter on Monday after dislocating the ring finger on his left hand.

In both cases, no structural damage was found, and both are expected to be available for Friday's home game against the Hornets.

            Head to head

San Antonio has won and covered all three meetings this season against New Orleans, and by comfortable margins (14, 7, and 17). The home team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the Hornets are just 1-6 ATS in the last seven games in San Antonio.

New Orleans won nine of its 12 road games from Jan. 2 to Feb. 6, but has dropped four straight away dates since and hasn’t won at San Antonio in the last four opportunities.

            Trends

New Orleans is 7-1-1 ATS in its last nine road games but just 1-5-1 ATS in its last seven against Western Conference opponents.

San Antonio is just 1-6 ATS in its last seven games following a win and just 0-4 ATS in its last four games playing on three or more days’ rest.

                  NHL

                  Friday, March 5

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks (-170, 5.5)

The Canucks continue their insane road schedule in the Windy City, taking the ice for their 11th straight game away from home.

Vancouver’s 14-game road swing was broken up by the two-week Olympic hiatus, however, the Canucks remained hot following that break with back-to-back wins over Columbus and Detroit this past week. That improved the team to 6-4 in those 10 away games and gave Vancouver its fourth win in five games.

This success is coming despite the fact that the Canucks have allowed the first goal in 10 of their past 12 games and have given up three or more goals in eight of the past 10 outings - helping total bettors cash in on the over in four straight games.

"We do, but we have a 14-game road trip, too," backup goalie Andrew Raycroft told reporters heading into Wednesday’s win over Detroit. "It's not like we are on a homestand and we're pressing our luck. It is tough to win on the road, especially when you're on it this much like we are right now. It's a good sign we're finding ways to win, but at the same time we have to find ways to address it."

The Blackhawks know a thing or two about topping the total. Chicago has played over the number in five straight contests. These two teams meet back in January, with the Blackhawks taking a 5-1 win that played over the 5.5-goal total.

                  Pick: Over

Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers (+160, 5.5)

The struggling Oilers were one of the most active teams during the NHL’s trade deadline Wednesday.

Edmonton added new faces like Ryan Whitney and Aaron Johnson but those additions won’t be enough to halt the team’s three-game slide heading into Friday. The Oilers have won just three games in their past 10 outings , most recently giving up three third-period goals to fall 5-2 to Chicago Wednesday night.

Edmonton’s roster shakeup will leave the lines out of sync and chemistry will be hard to come by against the Wild. And according to comment from Whitney following Wednesday’s deal, motivation will be hard to come by after leaving a contender like Anaheim.

“They won’t be playing in the playoffs this year, which is frustrating, those are the games you want to be a part of,” Whitney told the Edmonton Sun. “But I’m excited at the same time. I want to be looked at as a leader there, someone who can help the Oilers become a really good team again. It’s a great hockey town. It’s tough when you get traded to a team that’s rebuilding, but at the same time they’re looking at me as a guy they want to be a part of it and that’s a compliment. I look forward to it.”

Minnesota started the second half of the season on the right path, knocking off the Calgary Flames Wednesday night for their second straight win. The Wild have won their last two meetings with the Oilers, defeating them 4-2 in February and 3-1 back in December.

                  Pick: Minnesota

                      Friday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Detroit Tigers.......

                      10) Scott Sizemore, 2B-- Not sure why he's so low on this list, since he is the Opening Day 2B in Detroit. VCU grad hit .308 in AAA LY.

                      5) Daniel Schlereth, RP-- Son of ESPN's Mark Schlereth, he made leap from AA to majors LY, but gave up 13 runs in 18 IP.

                      4) Andy Oliver, LHP-- Oklahoma State product signed late, hasn't made his pro debut yet. Figures to start in high-Class A.

                      3) Austin Jackson, OF-- .288 hitter is 2,203 minor league ABs; unsure what the Damon signing does to his status for this year.

                      2) Casey Crosby, LHP-- Was 10-4, 2.41 in 24 starts in Class A ball, as he was limited to five innings a start after Tommy John surgery.

                      1) Jacob Turner, P-- St Louis high school kid got $4.7M signing bonus, most ever given to a HS pitcher. His HS pitching coach was the former big league closer Todd Worrell.

                      ************************************************** *****

Friday's List of 13: Marching into the weekend...........

                      13) This is the weekend most of the mid-majors have conference tourneys as the Field of 65 will start to be filled out; for teams like Coastal Carolina or Belmont or Murray State, this is their Super Bowl, their chance to be a league champion on national TV. Chances are none of these teams will get a win in the NCAAs-- for them, just getting there is a big deal.

                      12) In the Atlantic Sun, #1 Lipscomb got upset by Kennesaw State, so it could be the A-Sun winner is headed to the play-in game in Dayton. In the Patriot League, #7 Holy Cross upset #2 Bucknell; if Lehigh were to lose in this tournament, the Patriot winner could also go to Dayton.

                      11) Wow. Ashton Gibbs buried a 26-footer at buzzer, giving Pitt a 73-71 win over Providence, tearing the heart ouf of the Friars. A brutal loss.

                      10) Think NC State would like to have Herb Sendek back? All he does is win games. You'd think that would be enough.

                      9) Could the R at midcourt on Rutgers' basketball floor be any bigger? If it were up to me, I'd put an outline of New Jersey on there, so kids from outside the northeast could associate Rutgers with the Garden State.

                      8) Paul LoDuca is back in baseball? He played 1B for the Rockies in their first exhibition game-- he did some announcing for the Nationals last year, (or was that 2008?) and he was pretty good, but he's back playing now.

                      7) Over the last four seasons, Toronto Blue Jays were 30 games over .500 when Roy Halladay started, 72 games under when he didn't. Uh oh. In his Phillies' debut, Halladay threw 21 strikes out of 24 pitches. Not bad.

                      6) I'm amazed/amused that there is both pro rodeo and pro fishing.

                      5) With USC skipping out the Pac-10 tourney this year, there will be one game the first night; it looks like two of these three teams (Washington St, Oregon, Stanford) will be playing in the dreaded 8-9 game.

                      4) It was stunning how badly Louisville played at Marquette, shooting a dismal 37% while taking only two foul shots the whole game; they turned ball over 16 times in a 69-48 loss, and now have Syracuse coming to close out Freedom Hall Saturday. Cardinals are definitely a bubble team.

                      3) Its going to be a long offseason in Winston-Salem if Wake Forest does not make the NCAAs; they've had a good window of opportunity in last couple years with some excellent talent, but they've folded down stretch and now its happening again.

                      2) Interesting game Friday is Elon-Davidson rematch in SoCon tourney; six days ago, Davidson scored six points in last 0:01.9 to stun Phoenix in double OT, now Elon gets another shot at the Wildcats.

                      1) More and more conference tournaments are being played in fun places to visit; WCC/MWC are in Vegas, WAC is in Reno, A-14 is in Atlantic City, Sun Belt is in Hot Springs, AR, Pac-10 is in LA, Big East is in New York City. Good to have them in places where people have fun, even if their teams get eliminated early or when they're not playing.
