    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, March 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat get a visit from the Lakers, Penn State takes on Michigan State, and the Penguins hit the road to battle New York.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up three games on Thursday, with Memphis at Chicago, Utah at Phoenix, and the Lakers at Miami. Los Angeles (46-15 SU, 26-33-2 ATS) is coming off a 122-99 pounding of Indiana on Tuesday night, with Kobe Bryant scoring 24 points to go along with six assists. Jordan Farmar was good for 19 points off the bench in that win for the Lakers, who have won three straight games. The Heat (30-31 SU, 30-30-1 ATS) got back into the win column by beating Golden State 110-106 on Tuesday; Dwyane Wade poured in 35 points.

As well, the college basketball schedule has two games involving ranked teams on Thursday, with Providence at No. 17 Pittsburgh, and Penn State at No. 11 Michigan State. The Spartans (22-7 SU, 11-17 ATS) got past Purdue in a low-scoring 53-44 decision in their last game on Sunday. Raymar Morgan had 16 points for Michigan State in that contest. The Nittany Lions (11-17 SU, 12-13-1 ATS) are coming off a 79-60 win over Northwestern, with Talor Battle scoring 16 points. Penn State fell 65-54 to Michigan State when the teams met February 13.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are nine games on the NHL's schedule for Thursday, with Toronto at Boston, Ottawa at Carolina, Tampa Bay at Washington, the Islanders at Atlanta, Los Angeles at Nashville, St. Louis at Dallas, Colorado at Phoenix, Montreal at San Jose, and Pittsburgh at the Rangers. The 37-22-4 Penguins slipped past Buffalo 3-2 in their first post-Olympic game on Tuesday night, with Ruslan Fedotenko picking up a goal and an assist. The 29-27-2 Rangers rolled past Ottawa 4-2 on the road Tuesday, with Ryan Callahan scoring twice that day.

Bettor's best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Memphis Grizzlies at Chicago Bulls – Derrick Rose, Brad Miller and Luol Deng are probable for Thursday’s game with knee injuries. Joakim Noah will be out with a foot injury (see below).

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers – Marian Gaborik (cut) missed Tuesday’s game and is questionable.

Colorado Avalanche at Phoenix Coyotes – Milan Hejduk (back) missed Monday’s game and is doubtful.

      Who’s hot

The Pitt Panthers have won 6-of-7 games and are 5-1 ATS during that stretch.

Carolina has won six straight games, earning 7.75 units on the moneyline.

      Who’s not

The Lightning have not covered the puckline in two straight, lost four straight and have given up at least five goals in four consecutive games.

Michigan State is 4-10 ATS at home this season

      Key stat

35-13 – Over/under record for NBA teams in the last 48 games played. Going into Wednesday night’s action, the over had gone 10-2 in the last 12 league games.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Bulls center-forward Joakim Noah will miss three weeks of action as he rests because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Coach Vinny Del Negro said the team will give him at least that allotted amount of time but it could take longer for the former Florida Gator to heal. Noah is Chicago’s leading rebounder at 11.4 per night and also contributes 10.7 ppg. Brad Miller has been starting in place of Noah and Taj Gibson is also seeing extended playing time.

      Games of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat (+4, 187.5)

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns (-1, 213)

      Notable quotable

"I'll talk about the NHL, and no more Olympics, please. I've said, we're all disappointed, but let's move forward. Let's talk about the future, not what happened in the tournament."

-- Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin said before his game on Wednesday versus the Sabres. The Russians were eliminated by Canada, 7-3, in the quarterfinal round of the Olympics.

      Tips and notes

      - The Lakers brought in Ron Artest to play defense, but it appears he still hasn’t learned the offense. Artest said on Sunday, "As I learn this triangle, it's a pretty difficult offense." You would think 60 games would be enough for a pro basketball player to understand an offense. Artest is averaging the fewest points in his last 10 seasons and Phil Jackson said he has “hurt” the team offensively at times.

      - The Hurricanes haven’t given up on the season yet. Prior to the break, Carolina won 8-of-10 with seven of those victories coming as underdogs. In their first game back on Tuesday, the Canes took down Toronto as +117 dogs. Team GM Jim Rutherford said, "If we keep going on a run here, it's still possible. So we don't want to quit." Carolina is laying -110 at home Thursday.

      - Since Robin Lopez entered the Suns starting lineup on Jan. 18, the team has gone 15-6 SU and 14-7 ATS. The 7-footer has also improved Phoenix’s rebounding prowess. The team has posted a +5.34 rebound differential in those 21 games, up 7.64 rebounds from where they were without Lopez in a starting role.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Memphis Grizzlies at Chicago Bulls

Can Derrick Rose get a little help please? The second-year guard is averaging 25.8 points over the last five games but Chicago is just 2-3 straight up and against the spread over the same stretch.

Starting center Joakim Noah is out indefinitely and Kirk Hinrich is basically an empty body on the floor.

Meanwhile Luol Deng is banged up and Brad Miller is showing that he can’t play effectively if he gets more than 30 minutes a night.

''Luol, I expect to play on Thursday,'' Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro told the Chicago Sun-Times. ''It's just his knee was really stiff, and it swelled up a little more. He'll be examined [today], and hopefully with a couple of days before the next game -- the first time we've had that in a while -- we'll get him some rest and get that swelling out of there.''

Even if Deng plays, the Bulls will be fighting a losing battle on the boards without Noah. Chicago was outrebounded 63-37 against Atlanta on Monday.

"If some team wins a game giving up that big a difference, I'd like to know about it,'' Miller said after the game.

Don’t expect the Bulls’ recent problems to dissolve just because they’ve had a few days off.

              Pick: Memphis

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at San Jose Sharks (-230, 5.5)

With trade rumors abundant in Montreal this week, the club is silencing those whispers by announcing its plan to hang on to both goaltenders, Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak, for the remainder of the season.

The Canadiens are hoping their two-pronged attack between the pipes will prove valuable during the helter-skelter postseason schedule.

Price locked up his job following a 4-1 win in Boston Tuesday, stopping 23-of-24 shots on goal. He allowed a power-play goal midway through the first period but kept his team in the game with big saves in the final two frames.

"He played a strong game, especially after we had some breakdowns in the first and second periods. We gave some odd-man rushes and he was there to close the door,” said head coach Jacques Martin.

That win kicked off a four-game road trip that heads to San Jose on Thursday then closes with dates in Los Angeles and Anaheim. Montreal is a solid under play on the road this season, posting a 12-17-3 over/under mark in opposing barns.

                Pick: Under

Ottawa Senators at Carolina Hurricanes (-110, 5.5)

The Senators are crossing their fingers that the Olympic break didn’t put an end to their winning ways.

Before the two-week hiatus, Ottawa was one of the best teams in the NHL. It won 14 of the 16 games heading into the break but came back from vacation rustier than the garden gate. The Senators dropped a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers Tuesday night, giving up all four goals in the second period.

“That’s not how we wanted to start coming out of the break,” forward Jason Spezza told the Toronto Sun. “We didn’t have good coverage in our end, we gave them some easy goals. We left Ells out to dry.”

Ottawa is hoping a trip to face the lowly Hurricanes can get them back on the right track. However, Carolina is no push over. It’s won six straight games and eight of its last 10 outings heading into Thursday.

The Canes stayed hot following the break with a 5-1 win over Toronto Tuesday. That marked the sixth game in the past 10 that the Hurricanes have allowed two or less goals against.

                Pick: Carolina

Pucking the trends: Expect a slow NHL trade deadline
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Trade “dead”-line?

The NHL’s trade deadline is an excellent time to monitor futures odds and bet on a team that makes significant upgrades.

As Ken Campbell of The Hockey News points out, however, most of the top players that would have been available at this year’s trade deadline (such as Ilya Kovalchuk) have already been moved.

Still, there are a few Top-6 forwards and Top-4 defensemen and possibly a goaltender or two that could be moved before the 3:00 p.m. ET deadline Wednesday.

The top forward rumored to be on the move is Carolina’s Ray Whitney. The 37-year-old Whitney has 48 points in 59 games this season. Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun may also be on the move, potentially going to Chicago.

                  Miller’s cross

Ryan Miller was Team USA’s savior – ending the Olympics with a 1.35 goals against average, .946 save percentage and was named the MVP of the tournament.

"He really made a big statement for himself, and he represented our club [the Buffalo Sabres] so well," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff told the Buffalo News. "He came here and created a lot of hope for the U.S. team."

Miller is on his way to a Vezina-trophy nomination, the award given to the NHL’s top goaltender. His 2.16 goals against and .930 save percentage are second in the league.

The Sabres are fighting with the surging Ottawa Senators for the Northeast Division title and are one point behind the Sens with three games in hand. They entered the Olympic break on a 1-4-2 stretch.

                  Flying under the radar

The Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings received a lot of attention for their play because of gaudy winning streaks of 14, 11, and nine games respectively.

Other teams are also playing their best hockey of the season right now. The Anaheim Ducks are 14-6-0 over their last 20 games and have an 11-game home winning streak.

The Ducks will have to find reserve sources of energy, as a league-high seven Anaheim players took home medals at the Olympics.

"They've been under a microscope, all of them, for the better part of two weeks here," Carlyle said. "As the tournament went on, that intensified. I'm sure they're looking for just a little bit of quiet at some point.

                  Offensive numbers

How much better are the Capitals than the rest of the Eastern Conference?

At +185 at 5Dimes, they are the clear favorite to represent the East in the Stanley Cup finals.

Washington’s 90 points lead the NHL and are 13 points better than the New Jersey Devils - the second-place team in the Eastern conference.

They rarely lose at home, posting a 23-3-3 record at the Verizon Center.

Washington’s goal differential is plus-70 - best in the league. The Capitals have scored 247 goals, an average of 3.92 goals per game, nearly .75 more than the next closest team, the San Jose Sharks.

The Caps have gone over the total in six straight games and have a 34-22-6 over/under record.

                  On the schedule

Fri. March 5 – Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks

Vancouver continues its NHL record 14-game road trip with three games in four nights. After playing Columbus and Detroit on back-to-back nights, the Canucks will have a day off before playing the Central Division leading Blackhawks.

Sun. March 7 – Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks

The Habs must play four games in six days – all on the road. After a Saturday matchup against the Kings, they make the short trip to Anaheim to play a Ducks team that has won 11 in a row at the Honda Center.

Sun. March 7 – Toronto Maple Leafs at Philadelphia Flyers

The Leafs play three road games in four nights including back-to-back nights in Ottawa and Philadelphia. The Leafs are one of the worst road teams in the NHL at 8-18-6.
