Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Sacramento Kings at Houston Rockets

When the Kings, Rockets and Knicks swapped players in a three-team deal two weeks ago, it was thought that Houston had improved the most. The club grabbed an All-Star caliber shooting guard in Kevin Martin along with a couple useful parts off the bench.

But the Rockets have had difficulty since their new blood arrived. Houston is just 2-4 straight up and against the spread since the arrival of the new players.

The chemistry issues seemed to dissolve during the Rockets 116-92 stomping of the Bosh-less Raptors.

“We played as a team,” Rockets starting point guard Aaron Brooks told the Houston Chronicle. “We pretty much put the game over in the third quarter. That way we didn't have to worry about the fourth. We played good, especially on the defensive end. I think we all are just getting used to playing with each other.”

Sacramento, meanwhile, is 2-0 in its last two games including a win over the Jazz as a 7-point home dog. The acquisition of Carl Landry is saving the Kings while starting PF Jason Thompson recovers from a sore back.

The Kings are playing better ball lately but backing them on the road isn’t usually a good decision.

            Pick: Houston

Cleveland Cavaliers at New Jersey Nets (+10.5, 197)

The Cavs are winning but they aren’t winning the way head coach Mike Brown would like to see. Brown comes from San Antonio’s coaching family and loves to win ugly games.

But that’s not the way Cavaliers are playing these days. Cleveland is 8-2 to the over in its last 10 games and is averaging 109.2 points over the last 13 games. The Cavs have eclipsed 100 points in 11 of those 13 games.

"We have athletic guys that can get out and run on the break and finish," LeBron James told the Cleveland Plain Dealer following a blowout win over the Knicks. "It is not something we practice a lot but if we get stops we can get out and run."

Expect the Cavs to take advantage of any fast-break opportunities against the woeful Nets.

            Pick: Over

Game of the day: Kansas State at Kansas
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas State Wildcats at Kansas Jayhawks (-9, 149)

The top two teams in the Big 12 will go head-to-head Wednesday, with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament quite possibly hanging in the balance.

This will be the second meeting between these two in-state rivals this season. Kansas took the first in an 81-79 overtime thriller.

              History lesson

Kansas has beaten up on its weaker sibling in recent years, taking eight of the last nine matchups with six of those games covering the spread. Kansas State did cover the number as a 3.5-point underdog in their first meeting this season.

The last two times these two have hooked up at Allen Fieldhouse it’s been no contest with the Jayhawks winning by 14- and 16-point margins. Kansas State hasn’t won on this floor since January of 2006.

              No. 1 seed in doubt?

Kansas has arguably been the best team in the nation for much of the season, certainly the best the Big 12 has to offer. But the Jayhawks have hit a few speed bumps in recent weeks.

The Jayhawks lost for the first time in conference play Saturday and it wasn’t close as Oklahoma State jumped ahead by 16 points before halftime and never looked back.

Their backers have reason to be concerned. Kansas has covered the spread just once in its last nine games, falling to 10-15-1 ATS in lined contests this season.

Head coach Bill Self isn’t ready to push the panic button just yet.

“I don’t think the thing is broken,” Self told reporters. “But I do think we need to really evaluate the things we take great pride in to be a good team, especially this time of year.”

              Home dominance

The Jayhawks haven’t lost at home since December 13th, 2008. Oddly enough, that loss came against an Atlantic 10 team, Massachusetts.

To find their last home loss in Big 12 play, you would have to go all the way back to February 2007. That was when they fell 69-66 as 5-point favorites against Texas A&M.

Kansas has posted a perfect 17-0 record at Allen Fieldhouse this season, but is just 6-8 ATS in lined games as the host.

The Jayhawks’ defensive play has been second to none at home, as they’ve held opponents to just over 62 points per game on 36.5 percent shooting.

              Clawing their way back

There weren’t too many Wildcat believers back in January, as Kansas State started Big 12 play with three losses in its first seven games.

Since then, KSU has reeled off seven straight victories, most recently avenging a conference-opening loss to Missouri last Saturday. Kansas State missed 19 consecutive shots at one point, but still managed to pull out a 10-point victory to improve to 11-3 in Big 12 play.

Wildcats coach Frank Martin believes his team is battle-tested entering Wednesday’s showdown.

"That was a drag-it-out fight right there and I was proud of our guys," Martin told the media. "A game like (this) shows we've come a long ways. These types of games where we don't make shots once took our spirit away."

              Defense first

Kansas State’s defense has played a major role in its turnaround this season.

The Wildcats are allowing 68 points per game but have tightened things up lately, giving up just over 64 points a night over their last five contests. Only two of their last seven opponents have scored more than 68 points.

Jacob Pullen may be the offensive sparkplug, but he was quick to praise his team’s defensive play following Saturday’s win.

"As a team we did a great job of not bailing out on our defense," he said. "Usually when a team is not shooting the ball well, they mellow out on defense. Our team did a great job of realizing our defense was the only way to keep us in it."

Pullen is averaging an impressive 18.5 ppg and 3.8 assists per game this season.

              Trends to note

Since starting the season 1-2 ATS, the Wildcats have gone 15-4-1 ATS over their last 20 lined games.

They’ve been listed as the underdog in each of the last 23 meetings in this series and have gone 6-17 ATS over that period.

Kansas owns a tremendous 22-9-1 ATS record in its last 32 games against opponents that own a winning percentage of at least .600.

However, the Jayhawks are just 9-19 ATS in their last 28 home games against opponents that sport a winning road record.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Buffalo Sabres (+115, 6)

Coming off his Olympic-MVP performance, Sabres goalie Ryan Miller was given the night off Tuesday in order to recoup from his two-week trip to Vancouver.

Miller was absolutely nails for the USA during the Winter Games, busting out of an NHL funk where he had surrendered more than three goals per outing before the break.

"We know him in this room, and we'll take him over any other goaltender right now in the game," said Patrick Lalime, who relieved Miller in Tuesday’s game. "He just showed the whole world what he can do."

Despite that tough stretch before the break, Miller still ranks tied for second in the league with a 2.16 goals-against average.

Buffalo fans will enjoy copious amounts of “Miller Time” as the heralded puck-stopper should be able to carry over his spectacular Olympic play into the remainder of the regular season.

                Pick: Sabres

Colorado Avalanche at Anaheim Ducks (-140, 5.5)

Going into the Olympic break, the Ducks were one of the hottest teams in the league, winning six of their last eight games.

Anaheim should be able to pick up right where it left off against an Avalanche squad they’ve defeated in five straight and 9-of-10.

But a total of eight Ducks participated in the Olympics and the team could have trouble regaining an offensive rhythm. Colorado played on Monday night and three of its players were present for the Winter Games.

"I felt our energy level got better as the game went on," Avs coach Joe Sacco said after Monday’s 3-2 loss to Detroit.

Ducks goalkeeper Jonas Hiller had to watch seven of his teammates take home medals from the Games so he might be inspired to put on a clinic Wednesday night.

Hiller is 4-0 versus Colorado in his last four games with a 2.00 goals-against average.

                Pick: Under

Pucking the trends: Expect a slow NHL trade deadline
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Trade “dead”-line?

The NHL’s trade deadline is an excellent time to monitor futures odds and bet on a team that makes significant upgrades.

As Ken Campbell of The Hockey News points out, however, most of the top players that would have been available at this year’s trade deadline (such as Ilya Kovalchuk) have already been moved.

Still, there are a few Top-6 forwards and Top-4 defensemen and possibly a goaltender or two that could be moved before the 3:00 p.m. ET deadline Wednesday.

The top forward rumored to be on the move is Carolina’s Ray Whitney. The 37-year-old Whitney has 48 points in 59 games this season. Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun may also be on the move, potentially going to Chicago.

                  Miller’s cross

Ryan Miller was Team USA’s savior – ending the Olympics with a 1.35 goals against average, .946 save percentage and was named the MVP of the tournament.

"He really made a big statement for himself, and he represented our club [the Buffalo Sabres] so well," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff told the Buffalo News. "He came here and created a lot of hope for the U.S. team."

Miller is on his way to a Vezina-trophy nomination, the award given to the NHL’s top goaltender. His 2.16 goals against and .930 save percentage are second in the league.

The Sabres are fighting with the surging Ottawa Senators for the Northeast Division title and are one point behind the Sens with three games in hand. They entered the Olympic break on a 1-4-2 stretch.

                  Flying under the radar

The Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings received a lot of attention for their play because of gaudy winning streaks of 14, 11, and nine games respectively.

Other teams are also playing their best hockey of the season right now. The Anaheim Ducks are 14-6-0 over their last 20 games and have an 11-game home winning streak.

The Ducks will have to find reserve sources of energy, as a league-high seven Anaheim players took home medals at the Olympics.

"They've been under a microscope, all of them, for the better part of two weeks here," Carlyle said. "As the tournament went on, that intensified. I'm sure they're looking for just a little bit of quiet at some point.

                  Offensive numbers

How much better are the Capitals than the rest of the Eastern Conference?

At +185 at 5Dimes, they are the clear favorite to represent the East in the Stanley Cup finals.

Washington’s 90 points lead the NHL and are 13 points better than the New Jersey Devils - the second-place team in the Eastern conference.

They rarely lose at home, posting a 23-3-3 record at the Verizon Center.

Washington’s goal differential is plus-70 - best in the league. The Capitals have scored 247 goals, an average of 3.92 goals per game, nearly .75 more than the next closest team, the San Jose Sharks.

The Caps have gone over the total in six straight games and have a 34-22-6 over/under record.

                  On the schedule

Fri. March 5 – Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks

Vancouver continues its NHL record 14-game road trip with three games in four nights. After playing Columbus and Detroit on back-to-back nights, the Canucks will have a day off before playing the Central Division leading Blackhawks.

Sun. March 7 – Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks

The Habs must play four games in six days – all on the road. After a Saturday matchup against the Kings, they make the short trip to Anaheim to play a Ducks team that has won 11 in a row at the Honda Center.

Sun. March 7 – Toronto Maple Leafs at Philadelphia Flyers

The Leafs play three road games in four nights including back-to-back nights in Ottawa and Philadelphia. The Leafs are one of the worst road teams in the NHL at 8-18-6.

Connecticut Huskies at Notre Dame Fighting Irish [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

Huskies: Connecticut is looking for a similar result today as they had earlier this year when they beat Notre Dame by double digits. Connecticut had won 3 consecutive games SU before losing their latest game SU by 2 PTS. That SU loss ended a 22 game winning streak, and could provide costly for the Huskies. UCONN is fighting for their tournament lives, as they more than likely need to win SU their 2 remaining regular season games to make the NCAA Tournament. UCONN is 17-12 SU and 12-15 ATS this season. The Huskies are 3-8 SU and 6-5 ATS in both true road games and neutral court venues this season. UCONN is 6-2 ATS as the listed underdog this season. The Huskies are led by 4 players averaging double digits in PTS this season. Guards Jerome Dyson and Kemba Walker average 33.5 PPG combined this season for the Huskies. Walker has been especially hot of late, averaging nearly 24 PPG over his past 4 games. Depth continues to be an issue for UCONN, as they simply don't have other scoring options outside of their big 4.

Huskies are 10-4 ATS last 14 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Under is 11-5 last 16 road games.

Key Injuries - C Jonathan Mandeldove (academics) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 76 (SIDE of the Day)

Fighting Irish (-1, O/U 143): Notre Dame has won back to back games SU, both by double digits. Unfortunately spirits are still down around campus with the news that All-American F Luke Harangody is likely out for the rest of the season. The Fighting Irish are living up their nickname, as they are doing everything possible to make a last minute push into the NCAA Tournament. Notre Dame is 19-10 SU and 12-10-1 ATS on the season. The Fighting Irish are 16-3 SU and 7-6 ATS at home this season. Notre Dame is 3-5-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this season. Notre Dame has won 4 of their past 5 games ATS, all coming as the listed underdog. The Irish are averaging nearly 77 PPG since the beginning of February, a span of 7 games. The Irish players have taken turns carrying the offensive load with Harangody out. F Tim Abromaitis has been one of the top 3 point shooters in the nation this season, shooting nearly 49% for the season. He averages 17.4 PPG this season for the Irish. G Ben Hansbrough does it all for the Irish, averaging 12.5 PPG, 4.7 APG, and 4 RPG this season.

Notre Dame is 4-1 ATS last 5 games vs. a team with a winning SU record.
Over is 6-1 last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

Key Injuries - F Luke Harangody (knee) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 71

Duke Blue Devils at Maryland Terrapins [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Blue Devils (-1, O/U 148): Duke continues to roll along in ACC play, as they've won 8 consecutive games SU entering tonight. Duke is an impressive 12-2 SU this season in a very tough ACC conference. The Blue Devils are 25-4 SU and ranked #4 in the nation. Winning games is nothing new to Duke, but the way in which they are winning this season is different. Duke is playing unbelievable defense, especially lately. Duke has held 5 of their past 6 opponents to 56 PTS or fewer, all in conference play. Duke is 9-4 SU and 7-5-1 ATS in both true road games and neutral court settings this season. The Blue Devis are 6-4-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this season. Duke has been the listed favorite in every game they've played this season. Today marks the smallest Duke has been favored by all season long. Duke is led by 3 players that average at least 17 PPG this season. Guards Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith, and F Kyle Singler combine to average 53 PPG for Duke this season. Duke is very disciplined, as they've had 7 games with less than 10 turnovers this season.

Duke is 11-4 ATS last 15 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game.
Under is 5-0 last 5 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

                    Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 72 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Terrapins: 2nd place in the ACC has been secured for Maryland, but they are clearly shooting for more. Maryland would like nothing more than to beat Duke considering they've lost the past 6 games SU to Duke. The Terrapins have won 5 consecutive games SU entering tonight, including an OT win at Virginia Tech in their last game. Maryland is 21-7 SU this season, with a #22 national ranking. The Terrapins have been flying under the radar all season long, as their 15-9 ATS record proves this season. Maryland is 14-1 SU and 8-4 ATS at home this season. The Terrapins are 4-3 ATS as the listed underdog this season. Today is the 1st time this season Maryland is the listed underdog at home. Maryland lost at Duke earlier this season SU by a season worst 21 PTS, scoring only 56 PTS in defeat. Maryland hasnt lost since, and can tie Duke for the ACC lead with a SU win on Senior Night. G Greivis Vasquez leads a group of starters that all average at least 9 PPG this season. Vasquez averages 19.5 PPG this season, and is coming off a career high 41 PTS in his last game.

Terrapins are 6-1 ATS last 7 home games.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

Key Injuries - C Steve Goins (knee) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 70

                      Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for March 3, 2010 from Len Berman.

                      1. Quick Hits

Carlos Beltran of the Mets says he talked with the Feds about their drug investigation of a Canadian doctor. The same doc treated teammate Jose Reyes, Alex Rodriguez and Tiger Woods.
The Missouri Senate wants to rename Mark McGwire Highway in St. Louis, Mark Twain Highway. It's presumed Twain wrote without the use of performance enhancing drugs. But hey, who knows for sure?
The NFL Pro Bowl will return to Hawaii next year, but again will be played the week before the Super Bowl.
The fountain of youth. The NHL Atlanta Thrashers have signed 48-year old defenseman Chris Chelios.
Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco and ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews will appear on Dancing With the Stars. It's my responsibility to let you know this stuff.

                      2. Give Me A-Brake

Top 5 subscribers know that A-Rod has been a favorite target of mine. I was hoping for a respite. A boring spring training, and an equally uneventful season off the field. Forget it. The Feds want to talk to him about his dealings with a Canadian doctor who is under investigation for performance enhancing drugs. Yankee brass seems to be in the dark. Why is it always A-Rod? They don't call him the "Lightning Rod" for nothing.

                      3. Come And Get It

Why should you go to watch a lousy team like the Nets play basketball? Well, if you show up for one of their final home games, you'll get a voucher to have your New Jersey state tax return done for free. A $29 value. Of course you can also get a voucher for free on line and avoid parking and concession fees. But then you might miss a chance to see the Nets set the all time record for futility.

                      4. Hold That Line

The New York Daily News yesterday discussed the notion of football in the Olympics. American football. The argument goes, if curling is an Olympic sport, anything is. Hey, how come nobody ever suggests stickball? I coulda been a contenduh.

                      5. What's In A Name?

They've come up with a list of some of the "most unfortunate" names in England. Barb Dwyer and Justin Case made the list. Obviously their parents were either oblivious or had a sense of humor.
When it comes to sports, a Korean pole vaulter's name gets lost in translation, especially when English audiences chant his name. Kim Yoo-Suk.

Happy Birthday: Heisman winner, running back Herschel Walker out of Georgia. 48.
Bonus Birthday: Hello? Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was born on this date. 1847.

Today in Sports: They come up with a name for the San Francisco Giants new ballpark, Candlestick Park (near Candlestick Point). 1959.
Bonus Event: A new craze starts at Harvard, goldfish swallowing. 1939.
