    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, March 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cavaliers play host to the Knicks, Georgetown takes on West Virginia, and the NHL returns to the ice in Colorado.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are nine games on the NBA's schedule for Monday, with Orlando at Philadelphia, Dallas at Charlotte, San Antonio at New Orleans, Atlanta at Chicago, Portland at Memphis, Toronto at Houston, Denver at Phoenix, Utah at the Clippers, and New York at Cleveland. The Cavaliers (46-14 SU, 29-29-2 ATS) won their third straight game on Friday, getting past the Raptors 126-118 in Toronto. LeBron James was good for 36 points in that contest. The Knicks (20-38 SU, 26-32 ATS) fell 120-109 to the Grizzlies in their last game on Saturday night.

As well, the marquee college basketball games on Monday are Oklahoma at Texas, and Georgetown at West Virginia. The Hoyas (19-8 SU, 12-11 ATS) fell 78-64 to Notre Dame at home in their last game on Saturday. Greg Monroe had a team-high 15 points for Georgetown in that loss, while Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark each picked up 12 points. The Mountaineers (22-6 SU, 11-16 ATS) are coming off a 74-68 win over Cincinnati on Saturday. Kevin Jones tossed in 15 points for West Virginia on that day, and Darryl Bryant was good for 14 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League returns from its Olympic break with a single game on the schedule for Monday, as Colorado hosts Detroit. The Red Wings entered the break with a record of 28-21-12, which ties them with Dallas for ninth place in the Western Conference standings. The Avalanche are a surprising 35-20-6 so far this year, and with 76 points they're tied with Vancouver for first place in the Northwest Division. The Avalanche fell 3-0 to Los Angeles in their last game on February 13, while the Wings' last outing was a 4-1 win over the Sens.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls: Bulls' center Joakim Noah (foot) and forward Luol Deng (Knee) are questionable and guard Derrick Rose (knee) is probable.

Toronto Raptors at Houston Rockets: Rockets forwards Shane Battier (flu) and Trevor Ariza (hip) and guard Kyle Lowry (ankle) are questionable. Raptors played Sunday.

Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns: Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin (ankle) is questionable. Nuggets played Sunday.

Lines to keep an eye on

New York Knicks at Cleveland Cavaliers: The total opened at 210.5 and quickly dropped to 209.5. Over is 9-1 in last 10 in New York.

Portland Trail Blazers at Memphis Grizzlies: The total opened at 194 and jumped to 195. Over is 8-2 in Portland's last 10 road games.

Georgetown Hoyas at West Virginia Mountaineers: The total fell from 138 to 137.5 and the Mountaineers went from 5.5-point favorites to 6.5.

Fresno State Bulldogs at Utah State Aggies: The total slipped from 129 to 128. The Bulldogs have played in eight straight overs.

      Who's hot

New Orleans Hornets are 7-2 ATS in their last nine.

Dallas Mavericks have won six in a row SU.

Phoenix Suns have won five in a row SU and ATS.

      Who's not

New York Knicks are 1-9 SU in their last 10.

Charlotte Bobcats are 2-7 ATS in their last nine.

Houston Rockets are 2-7 SU and ATS in their last nine.

      Key stat

102 vs. 101 - Total number of points the Utah Jazz have defeated the Los Angeles Clippers by in their last six meetings vs. the highest point total the Clippers have scored in those games.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Spurs guard Tony Parker has missed 10 of the last 13 games with everything from hip and ankle injuries to food poisoning and the Spurs are 3-7 ATS in his absence. Problem is they are only 1-2 ATS with him in that span, probably because he hasn't been able to fully recover. Parker is probable for tonight's game against the New Orleans Hornets.

      Game of the day

Georgetown Hoyas at West Virginia Mountaineers (-6.5, 137.5)

      Notable quotable

"No one knew our names. People know our names now."

Team USA center Chris Drury, a holdover from the 2002 American men's hockey team, said after Sunday's 3-2 overtime loss to Canada in the Vancouver Olympics gold-medal game.

      Tips and notes

After making a big splash in the Big Apple, Tracy McGrady sat out the second half of Saturday's loss to Memphis and did a similar disappearing act in Friday's overtime win against Washington. McGrady blames it on his knee but teammates are already growing tired of T-Mac's act. He says he will play tonight in Cleveland, but for how long?

Don't expect Team USA stars Paul Stastny or Brian Rafalski to be on the ice tonight when NHL play resumes with the Red Wings at Avalanche, much less those who played lesser Olympic roles. The NHLPA botched their travel plans by booking their return flights before the start of Sunday's gold medal game against Canada and the overtime match made it difficult for them to fly and recover in time to play.

With the top three ranked teams falling over the weekend, the nation's longest winning streak now belongs to Utah State, which has won its last 13 (10-3 ATS). Tonight the Aggies, 15-1 SU at home, host Fresno State, a team they defeated by 26 points last month on the road, and they have a surprisingly rowdy crowd. Look under the visitor's basket for the fat guy who wears only body paint and a diaper and try hitting a free throw.

        Monday six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the best minor league prospects for the Cincinnati Reds........

        6) Matt Maloney, LHP-- Ole Miss alum was 2-4, 4.87 in seven starts for big league club, giving up nine HRs in 41 IP.

        5) Travis Wood, LHP-- AAA hitters hit just .240 against him in his 49 IP for Louisville. Has 35-25 career record in minor leagues.

        4) Juan Francisco, 3B-- Reds not sure if he can play 3B in bigs, but he is blocked at 1B by Joey Votto, so 3B is it, for now.

        3) Mike Leake, P-- Went 16-1, 1.71 LY at Arizona State, got $2.27M for signing with pitching-needy Reds. Makes pro debut this spring.

        2) Yonder Alonso, 1B-- Miami alum only played 90 games in two years because of a hand injury but hit .293. Could get moved to the outfield.

        1) Todd Frazier IF/OF-- Former star of Little League WS has career BA of .295 in three minor league seasons. 2B looks like his position.

        ************************************************** ******

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

        13) Sports are great because they provide the highest of highs and lowest of lows; losing a game like the Americans lost the gold medal hockey game is as sick a feeling as you can imagine. You try your best, but its just not enough. No one wearing a blue sweater will ever forget Sunday's game. Ever. Neither will anyone in Canada, but of course, their memory of it will be a much happier one. Congratulations to both sides on a great game.

        12) Overtime hockey is as dramatic as it gets in sports; tough decision is when they play 4-on-4 in OT, who does the coach sit out that would be on the ice normally? These guys are all All-Stars, lot of big egos, has to be a very delicate decision for the coaching staff to make.

        11) Can someone lock NHL Commissioner Bettman into a room with the ESPN people and get this great sport back where it can be seen by most people? Good lord, its an exciting sport, it belongs on ESPN.

        10) What do you do with your silver medal when you come thisclose to a gold medal but lose? Finishing second is nothing to be ashamed of, but the silver medal is a tangible symbol of losing. I'm not sure I could stand to look at the thing if it was mine.

One of the first sports stories I remember reading was way back around 1970; Florida State had a basketball coach named Hugh Durham who was very good (he took Seminoles and later Georgia to Final Four), but once, his Florida State team lost the finals of a Christmas tournament. When he got the 2nd-place trophy back to the locker room, Durham threw it at the wall and smashed it to pieces. Second place isn't any fun.

I laughed at that story back then, but now that I'm 50 with a slight anger-management problem, I totally understand. Losing sucks.

        9) Suggestion for future Olympics: every team/participant has their own taped national anthem, so they can choose who sings their anthem should they win, instead of the goofy generic versions they play, with no lyrics. It wouldn't take much effort, just submit them in advance, and whomever wins, you play their anthem choice and its better for them.

        Elsewhere in the world.........
        8) Did you know there are 368 golf courses in South Carolina alone?

        7) Phoenix Open takes in $6M a year, just from the income they get from the 16th hole, where 25,000 people surround the hole and cheer like crazy or boo, depending on the result. Thats one event I'm adding to my list of stuff that I'd like to see someday.

        6) You know the plastic tips of your shoelaces? They're called aglets and I wish like hell I invented them. That guy must be worth a fortune.

        5) There is a nasty rumor about that the 2014 Super Bowl is going to be in New Jersey at the new Giants Stadium; what moron decided this would be a good idea? New Jersey isn't far from Philadelphia, where they had 45 inches of snow in the first 15 days of February. When the new contract is drawn up for TV, the season is going to be longer, with Super Bowl on Presidents' Weekend Sunday, in all likelihood. Having it where it snows is stupid, especially at $750-900 a ticket. Good grief.

        4) NFL has also chopped its draft up into three different days, with first round on Thursday night, 2nd-3rd rounds on Friday and last four rounds on Saturday afternoon. As long as the Rams don't take Jimmy Clausen, I'll be happy with it.

        3) Weird story from the NBA; apparently Caron Butler chews straws as he plays basketball, as many as 12 a game, but the league has banned him from doing it anymore. Butler also said he got addicted to Mountain Dew and went through withdrawal when he quit drinking the soft drink, saying it was the hardest thing he had ever done. Of course, when I'm reading this article, I'm sucking down a 20-ounce Dew. Just terrific.

        2) Golf tip of the day: Apparently, Ben Hogan used to prepare to play in a tournament by walking holes from green to tee so he could read slope of the fairways better. Hogan mastered the mental side of golf, so this is some good advice. By the way, I'm sure TV ratings are taking a beating, but golf on TV is way better without Mr Woods, a lot more competitive.

        1) One last hockey note, and I've said this before: Mike Emrick is the #1 play-by-play guy of any sport; listening to him call a hockey game is just a pleasure. Would enjoy hearing him call games on ESPN fairly soon, so the NHL can get the exposure in this country that it deserves.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers (6.5, 203)

There’s something comforting about betting the Utah Jazz. Ever since Jerry Sloan took over bench duties in 1988, the Jazz run the pick ‘n’ roll almost every offensive set and they’re a much tougher team to beat at home than on the road.

The Jazz own one of the league’s best records this season but that’s largely due to their 24-8 mark on their home floor.

This weekend was another example of their home/road dichotomy; they lost at Sacramento on Friday and creamed the Rockets at EnergySolutions Arena the following night.

The Clippers are equally effective in friendly confines. Los Angeles’ other pro basketball team is 17-12 at Staples Center and won three out of four on a recent home stand.

It may go against your instincts to back the Clippers, but Monday night looks like a good opportunity.

            Pick: Clippers

Portland Trail Blazers at Memphis Grizzlies (-1, 195)

The Blazers are probably sick of talking about their front court problems. Still, matching up against a team like Memphis would be a lot easier if either (or even both) Greg Oden or Joel Przybilla was healthy.

Portland lost to the Bulls in overtime on Friday largely because of Chicago won the rebounding battle 43-29. How do the Blazers keep the Grizzlies' front line from cleaning the glass on Monday?

Memphis center Marc Gasol and power forward Zach Randolph have a combined average of 42.5 points and 24 rebounds in two games – both covers and outright wins – against Blazers this season.

Maybe if Brandon Roy wasn’t playing on one healthy leg the Blazers might have a chance. But whatever energy Roy does have, he’ll be spending it chasing around O.J. Mayo on the defensive end.

            Pick: Memphis

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche (-130, 5.5)

The lone game on schedule after the 10-day Olympic break has the Avalanche hosting the Red Wings.

Detroit has the bigger adjustment to make. The club surrendered a good portion of its roster, including head coach Mike Babcock, to the international tournament.

"We need to make sure we are ready to come out on Monday and start winning some games, and those guys are a big part of that," assistant Wings coach Paul MacLean told The Detroit News. "I am sure it won't take long for them to come to that understanding."

The coaching staff better hope it doesn’t take too long. Detroit is in a battle just to qualify for the playoffs, and the defending Western Conference champs play 15 games in 30 days beginning on Monday.

"Over the last three years we've played a lot of hockey and, unfortunately, the guys who could have used this break the most went to the Olympics," Wings veteran Kris Draper told reporters.

While the Wings have to worry about reincorporating almost half its lineup, the Avs only have a handful of players to welcome back.

Colorado is healthy and in much better position to restart its engine quickly.

                      Pick: Avalanche

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NHL teams helped and hurt by the Olympic break
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hockey fans will go back to reality this week.

After a brilliant showcase of hockey’s speed and skill at the Olympic Winter Games, the NHL season resumes Monday as teams begin their playoff push.

Here’s a look at two teams that benefited from the two-week Olympic layoff and two squads that would rather have kept on playing.

                        Helped by the break

                        Montreal Canadiens

The Habs should be a much different-looking team after the Olympic break.

Decimated by injuries, Montreal was forced to rely heavily on American Hockey League call-ups for several weeks. But the team has gotten a lot healthier during the two-week layoff.

Benoit Pouliot, Andrei Kostitsyn and Paul Mara are expected back in the Montreal lineup Tuesday against Boston. The Canadiens remain without top goal scorer Mike Cammalleri and power-play specialist Marc-Andre Bergeron, but hope to get both back soon.

Montreal, a disappointing 29-28-6 so far, will need all hands on deck for a run at the postseason.

"Right now, we're in a playoff position," Habs coach Jacques Martin told reporters, "but we need to sprint to the finish over those final 19 games."

                        Washington Capitals

Challenging the league record for consecutive victories took its toll on the league-leading Capitals.

Washington was both mentally and physically spent after going on a 14-game winning streak, falling three games short of Pittsburgh's NHL record. After the Capitals' streak was snapped with an overtime loss in Montreal, Washington lost its next two games before the Olympic break.

"This is going to be good for us," defenseman Mike Green said of the break. "I have some bumps and bruises that need some rest."

Forwards Matt Bradley and Jason Chimera and defenseman Tom Poti, all injured earlier this month, are listed as probable for the Caps' game in Buffalo Wednesday.

                        Hurt by the break

                        Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles was playing its best hockey of the season leading up to the Olympic break, going 12-2-1 in its last 15 games. The Kings' hot streak helped them shoot all the way up to fourth in the Western Conference standings.

"The Olympic break is a tough thing, especially when you are not playing," said Kings captain Dustin Brown, who did suit up for the Americans in Vancouver. "I think it is probably easier for the guys who are going to the Olympics. If anything, the intensity might pick up for those guys. But for the guys who are not going, it is important for them to focus. It can take a toll on you having that much time off."

A visit to Dallas Tuesday might help the Kings pick up where they left off. Los Angeles has won four of its last five in Dallas and five of its last six against the Stars.

                        Carolina Hurricanes

After an abysmal start to the season, there's playoff talk in Raleigh once again.

The Hurricanes have played themselves back into the postseason picture, winning nine of their last 11 games before the Olympics slowed them down.

The challenge now for Canes coach Paul Maurice is to get his team to pick things up where they left off.

"(Our focus) is to look at the break as a real good thing for their bodies and mentally, and we'll come back and try to get as quick and as fast as we can," Maurice told the media.

The Hurricanes remain without first-string goalie Cam Ward (back) and are using veteran Manny Legace and rookie Justin Peters in net. Carolina traded defenceman Nic Wallin and forward Matt Cullen before the break and might deal forward Ray Whitney if it falls out of the playoff hunt again.
