    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, February 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Michigan State takes on Purdue, the Lakers host the Nuggets, and the United States and Canada do battle for Olympic gold.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up eight games on Sunday, with Phoenix at San Antonio, Milwaukee at Atlanta, Washington at New Jersey, Miami at Orlando, Toronto at Oklahoma City, the Clippers at Sacramento, New Orleans at Dallas, and Denver at the Lakers. The Nuggets (39-19 SU, 27-28-3 ATS) beat the Pistons 107-102 in their last game on Friday, and they also topped the Lakers 126-113 in Los Angeles earlier in the month. The Lakers (44-15 SU, 25-33-1 ATS) got past the 76ers at home by a score of 99-90 on Friday. Pau Gasol led the way with 23 points for Los Angeles in that contest, while Andrew Bynum poured in 20 points.

As well, there are four games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Sunday, with No. 23 Richmond at Xavier, No. 20 Temple at La Salle, No. 5 Duke at Virginia, and No. 14 Michigan State at No. 3 Purdue. The Spartans (21-7 SU, 10-17 ATS) haven't played since last Sunday, when they were beaten 74-67 by Ohio State. Durrell Summers had 16 points for Michigan State in that game. The Boilermakers (24-3 SU, 12-14-1 ATS) have won 10 straight games, beating Minnesota 59-58 in their last game on Wednesday, Purdue, however, has lost forward Robbie Hummel (knee injury) for the season.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the Olympic men's hockey tournament comes to an end on Sunday afternoon with the United States taking on Canada in the Gold Medal Game. The United States blasted Finland 6-1 in their semifinal matchup on Friday, building up a 6-0 lead by the end of the first period. Patrick Kane scored twice for the Americans in that win. Canada held off Slovakia for a 3-2 win in their semifinal game on Friday; the Canadians had a 3-0 lead in that one before the Slovaks mounted a comeback. Canada and the United States met in the preliminary round of the tournament, with Kane and company grabbing a 5-3 win in that one.

Bettor's best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Toronto Raptors at Oklahoma City Thunder – Chris Bosh (ankle) has missed the team’s last four games and is expected to miss the next two as well.

Washington Wizards at New Jersey Nets – Andray Blatche (ankle) is questionable for the game.

Miami Heat at Orlando Magic – Dwyane Wade (calf) has missed the last four games and is questionable.

Line to keep an eye on

The Clippers-Kings total opened at 202.5 and now can be found anywhere from that number to 203.5. The last four games between these two teams have gone under.

      Weather to watch

The Hawaii-Nevada basketball game was canceled on Saturday after a tsunami warning closed the school’s campus in Honolulu. The tsunami was triggered by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Chile on Saturday morning.

The Wolf Pack was instructed to hunker down in their hotel, anywhere above the fourth floor, and wait out any effects the tsunami might bring. Nevada could still catch a redeye flight Saturday night but might be stationed on the island until Sunday.

Nevada next plays New Mexico State at home on March 4.

      Who’s hot

Purdue has won 10 straight games and covered in 6-of-7 versus Michigan State.

The Mavericks are 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS in their last six games.

      Who’s not

San Antonio has dropped 3-of-4 and is 3-7 ATS in the last 10 games.

Penn State is 2-8 SU in its last 10 games and 3-9 ATS at home this season.

      Key stat

21.5 – Average margin of victory for the Musketeers during their 22-game home winning streak. Xavier has won 37-of-38 at home and face the No. 23-ranked Richmond Spiders on Sunday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The No. 3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers will host No. 14 Michigan State on Sunday but will be without the services of their second-leading scorer (15.7 ppg) and rebounder (6.9 rpg) Robbie Hummel. The 6-8 forward tore his ACL in Wednesday’s win over Minnesota and will miss the remainder of the season. Keaton Grant is expected to take Hummel’s spot in the starting lineup.

      Games of the day

      USA vs. Canada

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (-4, 209.5)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 208.5)

      Notable quotable

"I've got a feeling they're going to go on a run right now. They're the team you don't want to play in the Big East tournament."

-- Seth Davis said of Connecticut in an SI.com article on Monday. The Huskies have won and covered in three straight and host Louisville on Sunday.

      Tips and notes

      - Kings coach Paul Westphal benched center Spencer Hawes Tuesday after the player publicly criticized the coach about irregular playing time. Sean May and Tyreke Evans also said they were frustrated with Westphal’s inconsistent allocation of minutes. Hawes was back in the starting lineup Friday as relationships were mended and Sacramento beat the Jazz.

      - Since being trade to the Bucks, John Salmons has been on fire. Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut said Salmons brings a “scoring punch” to the team and characterized him as a “proven scorer in the NBA.” In six games with the Bucks, Salmons is averaging 18.2 ppg and the team has gone 6-0 SU and ATS.

      - The old Clippers and new Clippers are beginning to gel. The team is 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four games and the welding of teammates is apparent. Drew Gooden stated he is, “beginning to get comfortable” with his new team and said “we are trying to play as a team and get some wins.” Gooden is averaging 15.0 points and 10.3 rebounds since coming to L.A. in a trade while Steve Blake is dishing out 8.6 assists per.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Oklahoma City Thunder

Kevin Durant has stolen all of the thunder from his teammates during Oklahoma City’s recent success, but he knows that he isn’t the only reason the team is sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference standings.

Second-year point guard Russell Westbrook has been instrumental in the Thunder’s turnaround season. Over the last 10 games, Westbrook is averaging 19.3 points, 10.0 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Those are Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Steve Nash-like numbers.

"A lot of people talk about me myself, but I think he's been the best player on our team, the guy that's the catalyst for our offense and defense,” Durant said.

"A lot of people tend to overlook him because he's not one of the bigger-name point guards, but he's been playing just as good as any point guard,” added Durant.

The Thunder were pissed after ending their nine-game winning streak with back-to-back losses and took out their frustration on Friday with a 17-point win over Minnesota.

Expect the Thunder to get back on a roll against the Chris Bosh-less Raptors Sunday.

            Pick: Thunder

Washington Wizards at New Jersey Nets

The Nets should be brimming with confidence after coming off their biggest win of the season – a 104-96 victory over the Celtics on Saturday in Boston as 11-point pups.

"Any win for us is big. There's no question," coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "But to get a win on the road, and this is one of the toughest places to play in the NBA -- it should demonstrate to our guys that if they play with effort, they can compete against anybody."

New Jersey has actually been playing some respectable ball during the month of February. The team is only 2-10 but has gone 6-5-1 ATS during that span and has lost by double digits only three times in those 12 games.

This is one of the boldest predictions in the history of the Pick ‘n’ roll, but the Nets will be riding their first two-game winning streak of the season after Sunday.

            Pick: Nets

What bettors need to know: NBA on ABC
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (-4, 209.5)

              The Suns also rise

Phoenix (37-23, 34-26 ATS) has been on fire since the All-Star break. The Suns are 6-1 (6-1 ATS) to start the second half and they have not only won five straight games, but they have also covered the spread in five consecutive outings.

Although the team is known for its offense, Phoenix has actually been doing its damage on the other end of the floor. The Suns held three of their first four opponents since the break to fewer than 100 points, but after beating Philadelphia 102-95 Wednesday, they outscored the Clippers 125-112 Friday.

Coach Alvin Gentry hopes his squad regains its defensive prowess for Sunday’s trip to San Antonio.

“It was a good win, but on defense, not so good,” Gentry said after the win over Los Angeles. “They had a lot of penetration and we didn't do a good job keeping them out of the paint.”

              Home sweet home

The Spurs recently completed their annual “Rodeo trip”, an eight-game trek across the nation due to the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo taking over the AT&T Center. They went 4-4 (2-6 ATS) during the trip and have played just one home game since January 31 - a 95-87 win over Oklahoma City Wednesday.

While the Spurs are a disappointing 12-14 (10-16 ATS) on the road, they are 20-10 (16-13-1 ATS) with home-court advantage. In keeping with the trend, San Antonio traveled to Houston Friday and lost 109-104.

Still, not all is well with the Spurs (32-24, 26-29-1 ATS) even though they are at home Sunday. Tony Parker missed last Sunday’s game with a hip problem and now he is dealing with food poisoning which kept him out against the Rockets. Parker (16.5 ppg, 5.8 apg) is listed as day-to-day and his status is uncertain.

              Prior engagement

The Suns and Spurs have met just once this season, back on December 15. A 2-point underdog despite playing at home, Phoenix prevailed 116-104 behind 28 points from Amare Stoudemire, who led five Suns in double figures. Tim Duncan controlled the paint to the tune of 34 points and 14 rebounds, but Manu Ginobili and Parker combined to shoot a mere 6-for-19 from the floor.

              Trending topics

The Suns are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and 5-1 ATS in their last six outings as underdogs.

The Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five as favorites.

Phoenix (25-33-2 O/U) has been a solid under play so far this season, while San Antonio has been decent in the same department (25-30-1 O/U). The under is 9-2 in the Suns’ last 11 overall and 5-1 in their last six road games; the under is also 5-1 in the Spurs’ last six against the Western Conference.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 208.5)

              Curious George

Denver head coach George Karl missed his first game of the season due to cancer treatment, but he said prior to Thursday night’s contest at Golden State that he would watch from his living room with no sharp objects in the vicinity.

“I can’t drink, so I’ll probably walk away a few times,” Karl told reporters. “I’ll be cussing at my family instead of my coaches.”

Karl did not have to cuss at all, as the Nuggets (39-19, 27-28-3 ATS) maintained their fine form and hammered the Warriors 127-122. With Karl back one day later, Denver took care of business at home against Detroit, 107-102. Karl’s team has now won three in a row and four of five since the All-Star break.

While it does not seem to matter who is roaming the sidelines as head man, it is worth noting that Karl will be in command for Sunday’s showdown at Los Angeles.

              Kobe doin’ work

A high ankle sprain that kept Kobe Bryant out of action for four games (two before the All-Star break and two after) appears to be a thing of the past. Kobe scored 32 points in his first night back and contributed 19 points in a 99-90 home win over Philadelphia.

But he could have gone for far more.

“If they needed me to go off, I could have,” Kobe assured.

Of course, they did not need him to go off, not with a strong supporting cast that improved in Kobe’s absence. Consider the following lines against the Sixers: Pau Gasol had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Andrew Bynum added 20 and 13 and Lamar Odom chipped in 11 points while grabbing nine boards.

With the trio of big men in fine form the Lakers (44-15, 25-32-2 ATS), Denver better hope Kenyon Martin is back from a knee injury. Martin missed Friday’s game and is listed as questionable.

              Prior engagements

This will be the third meeting this season between the two teams and the Lakers are looking for a first win in three tries against their Western Conference rivals. A 4-point home favorite on November 13, Denver destroyed Los Angeles 105-79. Without Carmelo, the Nuggets then went into the Staples Center as 8-point underdogs on February 5 and came away with a 126-113 victory.

              Trending topics

The Nuggets are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games and 18-6-2 ATS in their last 26 games as underdogs.

The Lakers are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven outings at home.

Denver (29-29 O/U) has not been a strong over/under play this season, while Los Angeles (26-32-1 O/U) has been a decent under play. The over is 4-1 in Denver’s last five overall, but the under is 7-1 in LA’s last eight overall and 4-0 in the team’s last four home games. The under is also 11-4 in the last 15 meetings between the two Western Conference contenders.

Denver is just 4-12 ATS in its last 16 road games against the Lakers.
